And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of Jehovah thy God, to take heed to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that Jehovah thy God will set thee supreme above all nations of the earth; | “And if you faithfully obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. | If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. |
and all these blessings shall come on thee and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of Jehovah thy God. | And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God. | All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the LORD your God: |
Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. | Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. | You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country. |
Blessed shall be the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy ground, and the fruit of thy cattle, the offspring of thy kine, and the increase of thy sheep. | Blessed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your cattle, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. | The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. |
Blessed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough. | Blessed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. | Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed. |
Blessed shalt thou be in thy coming in, and blessed shalt thou be in thy going out. | Blessed shall you be when you come in, and blessed shall you be when you go out. | You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out. |
Jehovah will give up, smitten before thee, thine enemies that rise up against thee; they shall come out against thee one way, and by seven ways shall they flee before thee. | “The LORD will cause your enemies who rise against you to be defeated before you. They shall come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways. | The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven. |
Jehovah will command blessing on thee in thy granaries, and in all the business of thy hand; and he will bless thee in the land which Jehovah thy God giveth thee. | The LORD will command the blessing on you in your barns and in all that you undertake. And he will bless you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. | The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the land he is giving you. |
Jehovah will establish thee unto himself a holy people as he hath sworn unto thee, if thou keep the commandments of Jehovah thy God, and walk in his ways. | The LORD will establish you as a people holy to himself, as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the LORD your God and walk in his ways. | The LORD will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the LORD your God and walk in obedience to him. |
And all peoples of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of Jehovah, and they shall be afraid of thee. | And all the peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they shall be afraid of you. | Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the LORD, and they will fear you. |
And Jehovah will give thee abundance of good, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy ground, in the land that Jehovah swore unto thy fathers to give thee. | And the LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your womb and in the fruit of your livestock and in the fruit of your ground, within the land that the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. | The LORD will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you. |
Jehovah will open to thee his good treasure, the heavens, to give rain unto thy land in its season, and to bless all the work of thy hand; and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow. | The LORD will open to you his good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. And you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow. | The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. |
And Jehovah will make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if thou hearken unto the commandments of Jehovah thy God, which I command thee this day, to keep and to do them, | And the LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you shall only go up and not down, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you today, being careful to do them, | The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom. |
and if thou turn not aside from any of the words that I command thee this day, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them. | and if you do not turn aside from any of the words that I command you today, to the right hand or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them. | Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them. |
But it shall come to pass if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of Jehovah thy God, to take heed to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day, that all these curses shall come upon thee and overtake thee. | “But if you will not obey the voice of the LORD your God or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you today, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you. | However, if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you: |
Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. | Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field. | You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country. |
Cursed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough. | Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl. | Your basket and your kneading trough will be cursed. |
Cursed shall be the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy ground, the offspring of thy kine, and the increase of thy sheep. | Cursed shall be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock. | The fruit of your womb will be cursed, and the crops of your land, and the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks. |
Cursed shalt thou be in thy coming in, and cursed shalt thou be in thy going out. | Cursed shall you be when you come in, and cursed shall you be when you go out. | You will be cursed when you come in and cursed when you go out. |
Jehovah will send upon thee cursing, confusion, and rebuke, in all the business of thy hand which thou doest, until thou be destroyed and until thou perish quickly, because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken me. | “The LORD will send on you curses, confusion, and frustration in all that you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and perish quickly on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken me. | The LORD will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him. |
Jehovah will make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until he have consumed thee from off the land whither thou goest to possess it. | The LORD will make the pestilence stick to you until he has consumed you off the land that you are entering to take possession of it. | The LORD will plague you with diseases until he has destroyed you from the land you are entering to possess. |
Jehovah will smite thee with consumption, and with fever, and with inflammation, and with burning ague, and with drought, and with blight, and with mildew, and they shall pursue thee until thou perish. | The LORD will strike you with wasting disease and with fever, inflammation and fiery heat, and with drought and with blight and with mildew. They shall pursue you until you perish. | The LORD will strike you with wasting disease, with fever and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought, with blight and mildew, which will plague you until you perish. |
And thy heavens which are over thy head shall be brass, and the earth which is under thee, iron. | And the heavens over your head shall be bronze, and the earth under you shall be iron. | The sky over your head will be bronze, the ground beneath you iron. |
Jehovah will give as the rain of thy land powder and dust; from the heavens shall it come down upon thee until thou be destroyed. | The LORD will make the rain of your land powder. From heaven dust shall come down on you until you are destroyed. | The LORD will turn the rain of your country into dust and powder; it will come down from the skies until you are destroyed. |
Jehovah will give thee up smitten before thine enemies; thou shalt go out against them one way, and by seven ways shalt thou flee before them; and thou shalt be driven hither and thither into all the kingdoms of the earth. | “The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You shall go out one way against them and flee seven ways before them. And you shall be a horror to all the kingdoms of the earth. | The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies. You will come at them from one direction but flee from them in seven, and you will become a thing of horror to all the kingdoms on earth. |

Jehovah will smite thee with the ulcers of Egypt, and with boils, and with the scab, and with the itch, whereof thou canst not be healed. | The LORD will strike you with the boils of Egypt, and with tumors and scabs and itch, of which you cannot be healed. | The LORD will afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors, festering sores and the itch, from which you cannot be cured. |

and thou shalt grope at noonday, as the blind gropeth in darkness, and thou shalt not prosper in thy ways; and thou shalt be only oppressed and spoiled continually, and there shall be none to save. | and you shall grope at noonday, as the blind grope in darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways. And you shall be only oppressed and robbed continually, and there shall be no one to help you. | At midday you will grope about like a blind person in the dark. You will be unsuccessful in everything you do; day after day you will be oppressed and robbed, with no one to rescue you. |
Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her; thou shalt build a house, and thou shalt not dwell therein; thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not eat of it. | You shall betroth a wife, but another man shall ravish her. You shall build a house, but you shall not dwell in it. You shall plant a vineyard, but you shall not enjoy its fruit. | You will be pledged to be married to a woman, but another will take her and rape her. You will build a house, but you will not live in it. You will plant a vineyard, but you will not even begin to enjoy its fruit. |
Thine ox shall be slaughtered before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof; thine ass shall be snatched away from before thy face, and shall not return to thee; thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to recover them. | Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, but you shall not eat any of it. Your donkey shall be seized before your face, but shall not be restored to you. Your sheep shall be given to your enemies, but there shall be no one to help you. | Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will eat none of it. Your donkey will be forcibly taken from you and will not be returned. Your sheep will be given to your enemies, and no one will rescue them. |
Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and languish for them all the day long; and there shall be no power in thy hand [to help it]. | Your sons and your daughters shall be given to another people, while your eyes look on and fail with longing for them all day long, but you shall be helpless. | Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation, and you will wear out your eyes watching for them day after day, powerless to lift a hand. |
The fruit of thy ground and all thy labour, shall a people that thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed continually. | A nation that you have not known shall eat up the fruit of your ground and of all your labors, and you shall be only oppressed and crushed continually, | A people that you do not know will eat what your land and labor produce, and you will have nothing but cruel oppression all your days. |
And thou shalt be mad through the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. | so that you are driven mad by the sights that your eyes see. | The sights you see will drive you mad. |
Jehovah will smite thee in the knees and in the legs with evil ulcers, whereof thou canst not be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy head. | The LORD will strike you on the knees and on the legs with grievous boils of which you cannot be healed, from the sole of your foot to the crown of your head. | The LORD will afflict your knees and legs with painful boils that cannot be cured, spreading from the soles of your feet to the top of your head. |

There you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone. | |
And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all the peoples whither Jehovah shall lead thee. | And you shall become a horror, a proverb, and a byword among all the peoples where the LORD will lead you away. | You will become a thing of horror, a byword and an object of ridicule among all the peoples where the LORD will drive you. |
Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather little in; for the locust shall devour it. | You shall carry much seed into the field and shall gather in little, for the locust shall consume it. | You will sow much seed in the field but you will harvest little, because locusts will devour it. |
Thou shalt plant and till vineyards, but shalt drink no wine, nor gather [the fruit]; for the worms shall eat it. | You shall plant vineyards and dress them, but you shall neither drink of the wine nor gather the grapes, for the worm shall eat them. | You will plant vineyards and cultivate them but you will not drink the wine or gather the grapes, because worms will eat them. |
Olive-trees shalt thou have throughout all thy borders, but thou shalt not anoint thyself with oil; for thine olive-tree shall cast its fruit. | You shall have olive trees throughout all your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives shall drop off. | You will have olive trees throughout your country but you will not use the oil, because the olives will drop off. |
Sons and daughters shalt thou beget, but thou shalt not have them [to be with thee]; for they shall go into captivity. | You shall father sons and daughters, but they shall not be yours, for they shall go into captivity. | You will have sons and daughters but you will not keep them, because they will go into captivity. |
All thy trees and the fruit of thy ground shall the locust possess. | The cricket shall possess all your trees and the fruit of your ground. | Swarms of locusts will take over all your trees and the crops of your land. |
The sojourner that is in thy midst shall rise above thee higher and higher, and thou shalt sink down lower and lower. | The sojourner who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. | The foreigners who reside among you will rise above you higher and higher, but you will sink lower and lower. |
He shall lend to thee, but thou shalt not lend to him: he shall be the head, and thou shalt be the tail. | He shall lend to you, and you shall not lend to him. He shall be the head, and you shall be the tail. | They will lend to you, but you will not lend to them. They will be the head, but you will be the tail. |
And all these curses shall come upon thee, and shall pursue thee, and overtake thee, until thou be destroyed; because thou hearkenedst not unto the voice of Jehovah thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which he commanded thee. | “All these curses shall come upon you and pursue you and overtake you till you are destroyed, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep his commandments and his statutes that he commanded you. | All these curses will come on you. They will pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you did not obey the LORD your God and observe the commands and decrees he gave you. |
And they shall be upon thee for a sign and for a wonder, and upon thy seed for ever. | They shall be a sign and a wonder against you and your offspring forever. | They will be a sign and a wonder to you and your descendants forever. |
Because thou servedst not Jehovah thy God with joyfulness, and with gladness of heart, for the abundance of everything, | Because you did not serve the LORD your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart, because of the abundance of all things, | Because you did not serve the LORD your God joyfully and gladly in the time of prosperity, |
thou shalt serve thine enemies whom Jehovah will send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of everything; and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee. | therefore you shall serve your enemies whom the LORD will send against you, in hunger and thirst, in nakedness, and lacking everything. And he will put a yoke of iron on your neck until he has destroyed you. | therefore in hunger and thirst, in nakedness and dire poverty, you will serve the enemies the LORD sends against you. He will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you. |
Jehovah will bring a nation against thee from afar, from the end of the earth, like as the eagle flieth, a nation whose tongue thou understandest not; | The LORD will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, swooping down like the eagle, a nation whose language you do not understand, | The LORD will bring a nation against you from far away, from the ends of the earth, like an eagle swooping down, a nation whose language you will not understand, |
a nation of fierce countenance, which regardeth not the person of the old, nor is kind to the young; | a hard-faced nation who shall not respect the old or show mercy to the young. | a fierce-looking nation without respect for the old or pity for the young. |
and he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy ground, until thou be destroyed; for he shall not leave thee corn, new wine, or oil, offspring of thy kine, or increase of thy sheep, until he have destroyed thee. | It shall eat the offspring of your cattle and the fruit of your ground, until you are destroyed; it also shall not leave you grain, wine, or oil, the increase of your herds or the young of your flock, until they have caused you to perish. | They will devour the young of your livestock and the crops of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave you no grain, new wine or olive oil, nor any calves of your herds or lambs of your flocks until you are ruined. |
And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and strong walls wherein thou trustedst come down, throughout all thy land; and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates in all thy land, which Jehovah thy God hath given thee. | “They shall besiege you in all your towns, until your high and fortified walls, in which you trusted, come down throughout all your land. And they shall besiege you in all your towns throughout all your land, which the LORD your God has given you. | They will lay siege to all the cities throughout your land until the high fortified walls in which you trust fall down. They will besiege all the cities throughout the land the LORD your God is giving you. |
And in the siege, and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee, thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters whom Jehovah thy God hath given thee. | And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and daughters, whom the LORD your God has given you, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemies shall distress you. | Because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege, you will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the LORD your God has given you. |
The eye of the man in thy midst that is tender and very luxurious shall be evil towards his brother, and the wife of his bosom, and the residue of his children which he hath left; | The man who is the most tender and refined among you will begrudge food to his brother, to the wife he embraces, and to the last of the children whom he has left, | Even the most gentle and sensitive man among you will have no compassion on his own brother or the wife he loves or his surviving children, |
so that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children that he eateth, because he hath nothing left him in the siege and in the straitness wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates. | so that he will not give to any of them any of the flesh of his children whom he is eating, because he has nothing else left, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemy shall distress you in all your towns. | and he will not give to one of them any of the flesh of his children that he is eating. It will be all he has left because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of all your cities. |
The eye of the tender and luxurious woman in thy midst who would not attempt to set the sole of her foot upon the ground from luxuriousness and from tenderness, shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and her son, and her daughter, | The most tender and refined woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot on the ground because she is so delicate and tender, will begrudge to the husband she embraces, to her son and to her daughter, | The most gentle and sensitive woman among you—so sensitive and gentle that she would not venture to touch the ground with the sole of her foot—will begrudge the husband she loves and her own son or daughter |
because of her afterbirth which hath come out between her feet, and her children whom she shall bear; for she shall secretly eat them for want of everything in the siege and in the straitness wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates. | her afterbirth that comes out from between her feet and her children whom she bears, because lacking everything she will eat them secretly, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemy shall distress you in your towns. | the afterbirth from her womb and the children she bears. For in her dire need she intends to eat them secretly because of the suffering your enemy will inflict on you during the siege of your cities. |
If thou wilt not take heed to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, to fear this glorious and fearful name, JEHOVAH THY GOD; | “If you are not careful to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and awesome name, the LORD your God, | If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law, which are written in this book, and do not revere this glorious and awesome name—the LORD your God— |
then Jehovah will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, great and persistent plagues and evil and persistent sicknesses; | then the LORD will bring on you and your offspring extraordinary afflictions, afflictions severe and lasting, and sicknesses grievous and lasting. | the LORD will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. |
and he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt which thou art afraid of, and they shall cleave unto thee. | And he will bring upon you again all the diseases of Egypt, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you. | He will bring on you all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. |
Also every sickness and every plague which is not written in the book of this law, them will Jehovah bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed. | Every sickness also and every affliction that is not recorded in the book of this law, the LORD will bring upon you, until you are destroyed. | The LORD will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law, until you are destroyed. |
And ye shall be left a small company, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou hast not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah thy God. | Whereas you were as numerous as the stars of heaven, you shall be left few in number, because you did not obey the voice of the LORD your God. | You who were as numerous as the stars in the sky will be left but few in number, because you did not obey the LORD your God. |
And it shall come to pass, that as Jehovah rejoiced over you to do you good and to multiply you, so Jehovah will rejoice over you to cause you to perish, and to destroy you; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whereunto thou goest to possess it. | And as the LORD took delight in doing you good and multiplying you, so the LORD will take delight in bringing ruin upon you and destroying you. And you shall be plucked off the land that you are entering to take possession of it. | Just as it pleased the LORD to make you prosper and increase in number, so it will please him to ruin and destroy you. You will be uprooted from the land you are entering to possess. |
And Jehovah will scatter thee among all peoples, from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; and thou shalt there serve other gods, whom thou hast not known, neither thou nor thy fathers, wood and stone. | “And the LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and there you shall serve other gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known. | Then the LORD will scatter you among all nations, from one end of the earth to the other. There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known. |
And among these nations shalt thou have no rest, neither shall the sole of thy foot have a resting-place, and Jehovah shall give thee there a trembling heart, languishing of the eyes, and pining of the soul. | And among these nations you shall find no respite, and there shall be no resting place for the sole of your foot, but the LORD will give you there a trembling heart and failing eyes and a languishing soul. | Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place for the sole of your foot. There the LORD will give you an anxious mind, eyes weary with longing, and a despairing heart. |
And thy life shall hang in suspense before thee; and thou shalt be in terror day and night and shalt be afraid of thy life. | Your life shall hang in doubt before you. Night and day you shall be in dread and have no assurance of your life. | You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life. |
In the morning thou shalt say, Would that it were even! and in the evening thou shalt say, Would that it were morning! through the fright of thy heart wherewith thou shalt be in terror, and through the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. | In the morning you shall say, ‘If only it were evening!’ and at evening you shall say, ‘If only it were morning!’ because of the dread that your heart shall feel, and the sights that your eyes shall see. | In the morning you will say, “If only it were evening!” and in the evening, “If only it were morning!|—because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see. |
And Jehovah will bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I said unto thee, Thou shalt see it again no more; and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and there shall be no man to buy [you]. | And the LORD will bring you back in ships to Egypt, a journey that I promised that you should never make again; and there you shall offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but there will be no buyer.” | The LORD will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again. There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you. |
