1 Περὶ δὲ τῶν χρόνων καὶ τῶν καιρῶν ἀδελφοί οὐ χρείαν ἔχετε ὑμῖν γράφεσθαι Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need to have anything written to you. Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates we do not need to write to you,
2 αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκριβῶς οἴδατε ὅτι ἡμέρα Κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτὶ οὕτως ἔρχεται For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
3 ὅταν λέγωσιν Εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια τότε αἰφνίδιος αὐτοῖς ἐφίσταται* ὄλεθρος ὥσπερ ἡ ὠδὶν τῇ ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσῃ καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐκφύγωσιν While people are saying, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. While people are saying, “Peace and safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
4 Ὑμεῖς δέ ἀδελφοί οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐν σκότει ἵνα ἡ ἡμέρα ὑμᾶς ὡς κλέπτης καταλάβῃ But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief.
5 πάντες γὰρ ὑμεῖς υἱοὶ φωτός ἐστε καὶ υἱοὶ ἡμέρας Οὐκ ἐσμὲν νυκτὸς οὐδὲ σκότους For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
6 ἄρα οὖν μὴ καθεύδωμεν ὡς οἱ λοιποί ἀλλὰ γρηγορῶμεν καὶ νήφωμεν So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.
7 οἱ γὰρ καθεύδοντες νυκτὸς καθεύδουσιν καὶ οἱ μεθυσκόμενοι νυκτὸς μεθύουσιν For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.
8 ἡμεῖς δὲ ἡμέρας ὄντες νήφωμεν ἐνδυσάμενοι θώρακα πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης καὶ περικεφαλαίαν ἐλπίδα σωτηρίας But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
9 ὅτι οὐκ ἔθετο ἡμᾶς ὁ Θεὸς εἰς ὀργὴν ἀλλὰ εἰς περιποίησιν σωτηρίας διὰ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
10 τοῦ ἀποθανόντος περὶ ἡμῶν ἵνα εἴτε γρηγορῶμεν εἴτε καθεύδωμεν ἅμα σὺν αὐτῷ ζήσωμεν who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him.
11 Διὸ παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους καὶ οἰκοδομεῖτε εἷς τὸν ἕνα καθὼς καὶ ποιεῖτε Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
12 Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς ἀδελφοί εἰδέναι τοὺς κοπιῶντας ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ προϊσταμένους ὑμῶν ἐν Κυρίῳ καὶ νουθετοῦντας ὑμᾶς We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you.
13 καὶ ἡγεῖσθαι αὐτοὺς ὑπερεκπερισσοῦ* ἐν ἀγάπῃ διὰ τὸ ἔργον αὐτῶν εἰρηνεύετε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other.
14 Παρακαλοῦμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς ἀδελφοί νουθετεῖτε τοὺς ἀτάκτους παραμυθεῖσθε τοὺς ὀλιγοψύχους ἀντέχεσθε τῶν ἀσθενῶν μακροθυμεῖτε πρὸς πάντας And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.
15 Ὁρᾶτε μή τις κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ τινι ἀποδῷ ἀλλὰ πάντοτε τὸ ἀγαθὸν διώκετε [καὶ] εἰς ἀλλήλους καὶ εἰς πάντας See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.
16 Πάντοτε χαίρετε Rejoice always, Rejoice always,
17 ἀδιαλείπτως προσεύχεσθε pray without ceasing, pray continually,
18 ἐν παντὶ εὐχαριστεῖτε τοῦτο γὰρ θέλημα Θεοῦ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰς ὑμᾶς give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
19 Τὸ Πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτε Do not quench the Spirit. Do not quench the Spirit.
20 προφητείας μὴ ἐξουθενεῖτε Do not despise prophecies, Do not treat prophecies with contempt
21 πάντα δὲ δοκιμάζετε τὸ καλὸν κατέχετε but test everything; hold fast what is good. but test them all; hold on to what is good,
22 ἀπὸ παντὸς εἴδους πονηροῦ ἀπέχεσθε Abstain from every form of evil. reject every kind of evil.
23 Αὐτὸς δὲ ὁ Θεὸς τῆς εἰρήνης ἁγιάσαι ὑμᾶς ὁλοτελεῖς καὶ ὁλόκληρον ὑμῶν τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα ἀμέμπτως ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τηρηθείη Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
24 πιστὸς ὁ καλῶν ὑμᾶς ὃς καὶ ποιήσει He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.
25 Ἀδελφοί προσεύχεσθε [καὶ] περὶ ἡμῶν Brothers, pray for us. Brothers and sisters, pray for us.
26 Ἀσπάσασθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς πάντας ἐν φιλήματι ἁγίῳ Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss.
27 Ἐνορκίζω ὑμᾶς τὸν Κύριον ἀναγνωσθῆναι τὴν ἐπιστολὴν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς I put you under oath before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.
28 Ἡ χάρις τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μεθ’ ὑμῶν ⧼Ἀμήν⧽ The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
