My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality.1Ἀδελφοί μου μὴ ἐν προσωπολημψίαις ἔχετε τὴν πίστιν τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τῆς δόξης
For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes,2Ἐὰν γὰρ εἰσέλθῃ εἰς συναγωγὴν ὑμῶν ἀνὴρ χρυσοδακτύλιος ἐν ἐσθῆτι λαμπρᾷ εἰσέλθῃ δὲ καὶ πτωχὸς ἐν ῥυπαρᾷ ἐσθῆτι
and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, “You sit here in a good place,” and say to the poor man, “You stand there,” or, “Sit here at my footstool,”3ἐπιβλέψητε δὲ ἐπὶ τὸν φοροῦντα τὴν ἐσθῆτα τὴν λαμπρὰν καὶ εἴπητε Σὺ κάθου ὧδε καλῶς καὶ τῷ πτωχῷ εἴπητε Σὺ στῆθι ἐκεῖ «ἢ Κάθου» ὑπὸ τὸ ὑποπόδιόν μου
have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?4[καὶ] οὐ διεκρίθητε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐγένεσθε κριταὶ διαλογισμῶν πονηρῶν
Listen, my beloved brethren: Has God not chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him?5Ἀκούσατε ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί οὐχ Θεὸς ἐξελέξατο τοὺς πτωχοὺς τῷ κόσμῳ πλουσίους ἐν πίστει καὶ κληρονόμους τῆς βασιλείας ἧς ἐπηγγείλατο τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτόν
But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?6ὑμεῖς δὲ ἠτιμάσατε τὸν πτωχόν οὐχ οἱ πλούσιοι καταδυναστεύουσιν ὑμῶν καὶ αὐτοὶ ἕλκουσιν ὑμᾶς εἰς κριτήρια
Do they not blaspheme that noble name by which you are called?7οὐκ αὐτοὶ βλασφημοῦσιν τὸ καλὸν ὄνομα τὸ ἐπικληθὲν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς
If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you do well;8Εἰ μέντοι νόμον τελεῖτε βασιλικὸν κατὰ τὴν γραφήν Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν καλῶς ποιεῖτε
but if you show partiality, you commit sin, and are convicted by the law as transgressors.9εἰ δὲ προσωπολημπτεῖτε ἁμαρτίαν ἐργάζεσθε ἐλεγχόμενοι ὑπὸ τοῦ νόμου ὡς παραβάται
For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.10Ὅστις γὰρ ὅλον τὸν νόμον τηρήσῃ πταίσῃ δὲ ἐν ἑνί γέγονεν πάντων ἔνοχος
For He who said, “Do not commit adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” Now if you do not commit adultery, but you do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.11 γὰρ εἰπών Μὴ μοιχεύσῃς εἶπεν καί Μὴ φονεύσῃς εἰ δὲ οὐ μοιχεύεις φονεύεις δέ γέγονας παραβάτης νόμου
So speak and so do as those who will be judged by the law of liberty.12Οὕτως λαλεῖτε καὶ οὕτως ποιεῖτε ὡς διὰ νόμου ἐλευθερίας μέλλοντες κρίνεσθαι
For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.13 γὰρ κρίσις ἀνέλεος τῷ μὴ ποιήσαντι ἔλεος κατακαυχᾶται ἔλεος κρίσεως
What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?14Τί τὸ ὄφελος ἀδελφοί μου ἐὰν πίστιν λέγῃ τις ἔχειν ἔργα δὲ μὴ ἔχῃ μὴ δύναται πίστις σῶσαι αὐτόν
If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food,15ἐὰν ἀδελφὸς ἀδελφὴ γυμνοὶ ὑπάρχωσιν καὶ λειπόμενοι τῆς ἐφημέρου τροφῆς
and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit?16εἴπῃ δέ τις αὐτοῖς ἐξ ὑμῶν Ὑπάγετε ἐν εἰρήνῃ θερμαίνεσθε καὶ χορτάζεσθε μὴ δῶτε δὲ αὐτοῖς τὰ ἐπιτήδεια τοῦ σώματος τί τὸ ὄφελος
Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.17οὕτως καὶ πίστις ἐὰν μὴ ἔχῃ ἔργα νεκρά ἐστιν καθ’ ἑαυτήν
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.18Ἀλλ’ ἐρεῖ τις Σὺ πίστιν ἔχεις κἀγὼ ἔργα ἔχω δεῖξόν μοι τὴν πίστιν σου χωρὶς τῶν ἔργων κἀγώ σοι δείξω ἐκ τῶν ἔργων μου τὴν πίστιν
You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!19σὺ πιστεύεις ὅτι εἷς ἐστιν Θεός καλῶς ποιεῖς καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια πιστεύουσιν καὶ φρίσσουσιν
But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?20Θέλεις δὲ γνῶναι ἄνθρωπε κενέ ὅτι πίστις χωρὶς τῶν ἔργων ἀργή ἐστιν
Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?21Ἀβραὰμ πατὴρ ἡμῶν οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων ἐδικαιώθη ἀνενέγκας Ἰσαὰκ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον
Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?22βλέπεις ὅτι πίστις συνήργει τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἔργων πίστις ἐτελειώθη
And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God.23καὶ ἐπληρώθη γραφὴ λέγουσα Ἐπίστευσεν δὲ Ἀβραὰμ τῷ Θεῷ καὶ ἐλογίσθη αὐτῷ εἰς δικαιοσύνην καὶ φίλος Θεοῦ ἐκλήθη
You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.24ὁρᾶτε ὅτι ἐξ ἔργων δικαιοῦται ἄνθρωπος καὶ οὐκ ἐκ πίστεως μόνον
Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?25Ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ Ῥαὰβ πόρνη οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων ἐδικαιώθη ὑποδεξαμένη τοὺς ἀγγέλους καὶ ἑτέρᾳ ὁδῷ ἐκβαλοῦσα
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.26ὥσπερ γὰρ τὸ σῶμα χωρὶς πνεύματος νεκρόν ἐστιν οὕτως καὶ πίστις χωρὶς ἔργων νεκρά ἐστιν
