Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was near. | 1The Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, was approaching. |
So the high priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death, because they were afraid of the crowd. | 2The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death, because they were afraid of the people. |
But Satan went into Judas called Iscariot, who belonged to the circle of the Twelve. | 3Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, who was numbered among the Twelve. |
So he went off and discussed with the high priests and the Temple police how he could betray Jesus to them. | 4He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police how he could hand him over to them. |
They were delighted, and agreed to give him money. | 5They were glad and agreed to give him silver. |
Judas accepted their offer and began to look for a good opportunity to betray Jesus to them when no crowd was present. | 6So he accepted the offer and started looking for a good opportunity to betray him to them when the crowd was not present. |
Then the day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread came, on which the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed. | 7Then the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. |
So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover meal." | 8Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." |
They asked him, "Where do you want us to prepare it?" | 9"Where do you want us to prepare it?" they asked him. |
He told them, "Just after you go into the city, a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters | 10"Listen," he said to them, "when you've entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters. |
and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks you, "Where is the room where I can eat the Passover meal with my disciples?"' | 11Tell the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks you, "Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?"' |
Then he will show you a large upstairs room that is furnished. Get things ready for us there." | 12Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs. Make the preparations there." |
So they went and found everything just as Jesus had told them, and they prepared the Passover meal. | 13So they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. |
Now when the hour came, Jesus took his place at the table, along with his apostles. | 14When the hour came, he reclined at the table, and the apostles with him. |
He told them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer, | 15Then he said to them, "I have fervently desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. |
because I tell all of you, I will never eat it again until it finds its fulfillment in the kingdom of God." | 16For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God." |
Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and said, "Take this and share it among yourselves, | 17Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he said, "Take this and share it among yourselves. |
because I tell you, from now on I will never drink the product of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." | 18For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." |
Then he took a loaf of bread, gave thanks, broke it in pieces, and handed it to them, saying, "This is my body, which is given for you. Keep on doing this in memory of me." | 19And he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." |
He did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant sealed by my blood, which is being poured out for you. | 20In the same way he also took the cup after supper and said, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. |
Yet look! The hand of the man who is betraying me is with me on the table! | 21But look, the hand of the one betraying me is at the table with me. |
The Son of Man is going away, just as it has been determined, but how terrible it will be for that man by whom he is betrayed!" | 22For the Son of Man will go away as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!" |
Then they began to discuss among themselves which one of them was going to do this. | 23So they began to argue among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do it. |
Now an argument sprang up among them as to which one of them was to be regarded as the greatest. | 24Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest. |
But he told them, "The kings of the unbelievers lord it over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors. | 25But he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them have themselves called 'Benefactors.' |
But you are not to do so. On the contrary, the greatest among you should become like the youngest, and the one who leads should become like the one who serves. | 26It is not to be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you should become like the youngest, and whoever leads, like the one serving. |
Because who is greater, the one who sits at the table, or the one who serves? It is the one at the table, isn't it? But I'm among you as one who serves. | 27For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn't it the one at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves. |
"You are the ones who have always stood by me in my trials. | 28You are those who stood by me in my trials. |
And I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father has conferred a kingdom on me, | 29I bestow on you a kingdom, just as my Father bestowed one on me, |
so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit down on thrones to govern the twelve tribes of Israel." | 30so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. And you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
"Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has asked permission to sift all of you like wheat, | 31"Simon, Simon, look out. Satan has asked to sift you like wheat. |
but I have prayed for you that your own faith may not fail. When you have come back, you must strengthen your brothers." | 32But I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers." |
Peter told him, "Lord, I am ready to go even to prison and to die with you!" | 33"Lord," he told him, "I'm ready to go with you both to prison and to death." |
But Jesus said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you deny three times that you know me." | 34"I tell you, Peter," he said, "the rooster will not crow today until you deny three times that you know me." |
Then Jesus asked his disciples, "When I sent you out without a wallet, traveling bag, or sandals, you didn't lack anything, did you?" They replied, "Nothing at all." | 35He also said to them, "When I sent you out without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?" "Not a thing," they said. |
Then he told them, "But now whoever has a wallet must take it along, and his traveling bag, too. And the one who has no sword must sell his coat and buy one. | 36Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a money-bag should take it, and also a traveling bag. And whoever doesn't have a sword should sell his robe and buy one. |
Because I tell you, what has been written about me must be fulfilled: 'He was counted among the criminals.' Indeed, what is written about me must be fulfilled." | 37For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in me: And he was counted among the lawless. Yes, what is written about me is coming to its fulfillment." |
So they said, "Lord, look! Here are two swords." He answered them, "Enough of that!" | 38"Lord," they said, "look, here are two swords." "That is enough!" he told them. |
Then he left and went to the Mount of Olives, as usual. The disciples went with him. | 39He went out and made his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. |
When he arrived, he told them, "Keep on praying that you may not be tempted." | 40When he reached the place, he told them, "Pray that you may not fall into temptation." |
Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and began to pray, | 41Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and began to pray, |
"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Yet not my will but yours be done." | 42"Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me--nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done." |
Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. | 43Then an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. |
In his anguish he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat became like large drops of blood falling on the ground. | 44Being in anguish, he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. |
When he got up from prayer, he went to the disciples and found them asleep from sorrow. | 45When he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief. |
He asked them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and keep on praying that you may not be tempted." | 46"Why are you sleeping?" he asked them. "Get up and pray, so that you won't fall into temptation." |
While Jesus was still speaking, a crowd arrived. The man called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them, and he came close to Jesus to kiss him. | 47While he was still speaking, suddenly a mob came, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss him, |
But Jesus asked him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" | 48but Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?" |
When those who were around Jesus saw what was about to take place, they asked, "Lord, should we attack with our swords?" | 49When those around him saw what was going to happen, they asked, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?" |
Then one of them struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. | 50Then one of them struck the high priest's servant and cut off his right ear. |
But Jesus said, "No more of this!" So he touched the wounded man's ear and healed him. | 51But Jesus responded, "No more of this!" And touching his ear, he healed him. |
Then Jesus told the high priests, the Temple police, and the elders, who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a bandit? | 52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for him, "Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal? |
While I was with you day after day in the Temple, you didn't lay a hand on me. But this is your hour, when darkness reigns!" | 53Every day while I was with you in the temple, you never laid a hand on me. But this is your hour--and the dominion of darkness." |
Then they arrested him, led him away, and brought him to the high priest's house. But Peter was following at a distance. | 54They seized him, led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. Meanwhile Peter was following at a distance. |
When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had taken their seats, Peter, too, sat down among them. | 55They lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, and Peter sat among them. |
A servant girl saw him sitting by the fire, stared at him, and said, "This man was with him, too." | 56When a servant saw him sitting in the light, and looked closely at him, she said, "This man was with him too." |
But he denied it, "I don't know him, woman!" he responded. | 57But he denied it: "Woman, I don't know him." |
A little later, a man looked at him and said, "You are one of them, too." But Peter said, "Mister, I am not!" | 58After a little while, someone else saw him and said, "You're one of them too." "Man, I am not!" Peter said. |
About an hour later, another man emphatically asserted, "This man was certainly with him, because he is a Galilean!" | 59About an hour later, another kept insisting, "This man was certainly with him, since he's also a Galilean." |
But Peter said, "Mister, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just then, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. | 60But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. |
Then the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. And Peter remembered the word from the Lord, and how he had told him, "Before a rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." | 61Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter. So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times." |
So he went outside and cried bitterly. | 62And he went outside and wept bitterly. |
Then the men who were holding Jesus in custody began to make fun of him while they beat him. | 63The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating him. |
They blindfolded him and asked him over and over again, "Prophesy! Who is the one who hit you?" | 64After blindfolding him, they kept asking, "Prophesy! Who was it that hit you?" |
And they kept insulting him in many other ways. | 65And they were saying many other blasphemous things to him. |
As soon as day came, the elders of the people, the high priests, and the scribes assembled and brought him before their Council. | 66When daylight came, the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes, convened and brought him before their Sanhedrin. |
They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us." But he told them, "If I tell you, you won't believe me, | 67They said, "If you are the Messiah, tell us." But he said to them, "If I do tell you, you will not believe. |
and if I ask you a question, you won't answer me. | 68And if I ask you, you will not answer. |
But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God." | 69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God." |
Then they all asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God?" He answered them, "You said it—I AM." | 70They all asked, "Are you, then, the Son of God?" And he said to them, "You say that I am." |
"Why do we need any more testimony?" they asked. "We have heard it ourselves from his own mouth!" | 71"Why do we need any more testimony," they said, "since we've heard it ourselves from his mouth?" |
