Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, | 1Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. |
and the chief priests and scribes were looking for a way to put Jesus to death; for they feared the people. | 2And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. |
Then Satan entered Judas Iscariot, who was one of the Twelve. | 3Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. |
And Judas went to discuss with the chief priests and temple officers how he might betray Jesus to them. | 4And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. |
They were delighted and agreed to give him money. | 5And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. |
Judas consented, and began to look for an opportunity to betray Jesus to them in the absence of a crowd. | 6And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude. |
Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb was to be sacrificed. | 7Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed. |
Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare for us to eat the Passover.” | 8And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat. |
“Where do You want us to prepare it?” they asked. | 9And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare? |
He answered, “When you enter the city, a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him to the house he enters, | 10And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in. |
and say to the owner of that house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’ | 11And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples? |
And he will show you a large upper room, already furnished. Make preparations there.” | 12And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready. |
So they went and found it just as Jesus had told them. And they prepared the Passover. | 13And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. |
When the hour had come, Jesus reclined at the table with His apostles. | 14And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him. |
And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before My suffering. | 15And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: |
For I tell you that I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” | 16For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God. |
After taking the cup, He gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves. | 17And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: |
For I tell you that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” | 18For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come. |
And He took the bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” | 19And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. |
In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you. | 20Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. |
Look! The hand of My betrayer is with Mine on the table. | 21But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. |
Indeed, the Son of Man will go as it has been determined, but woe to that man who betrays Him.” | 22And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! |
Then they began to question among themselves which of them was going to do this. | 23And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing. |
A dispute also arose among the disciples as to which of them would be considered the greatest. | 24And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. |
So Jesus declared, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those in authority over them call themselves benefactors. | 25And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. |
But you shall not be like them. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who leads like the one who serves. | 26But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. |
For who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines? But I am among you as one who serves. | 27For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. |
You are the ones who have stood by Me in My trials. | 28Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations. |
And I bestow on you a kingdom, just as My Father has bestowed one on Me, | 29And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me; |
so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. | 30That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. |
Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. | 31And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: |
But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” | 32But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. |
“Lord,” said Peter, “I am ready to go with You even to prison and to death.” | 33And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death. |
But Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.” | 34And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me. |
Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you out without purse or bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered. | 35And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing. |
“Now, however,” He told them, “the one with a purse should take it, and likewise a bag; and the one without a sword should sell his cloak and buy one. | 36Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. |
For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in Me: ‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about Me is reaching its fulfillment.” | 37For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end. |
So they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” “That is enough,” He answered. | 38And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough. |
Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed Him. | 39And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. |
When He came to the place, He told them, “Pray that you will not enter into temptation.” | 40And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation. |
And He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, where He knelt down and prayed, | 41And he was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, |
“Father, if You are willing, take this cup from Me. Yet not My will, but Yours be done.” | 42Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done. |
Then an angel from heaven appeared to Him and strengthened Him. | 43And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. |
And in His anguish, He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. | 44And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. |
When Jesus rose from prayer and returned to the disciples, He found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. | 45And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, |
“Why are you sleeping?” He asked. “Get up and pray so that you will not enter into temptation.” | 46And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. |
While He was still speaking, a crowd arrived, led by the man called Judas, one of the Twelve. He approached Jesus to kiss Him. | 47And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. |
But Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” | 48But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss? |
Those around Jesus saw what was about to happen and said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” | 49When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? |
And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. | 50And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. |
But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And He touched the man’s ear and healed him. | 51And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him. |
Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple officers, and elders who had come for Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against an outlaw? | 52Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? |
Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on Me. But this hour belongs to you and to the power of darkness.” | 53When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness. |
Then they seized Jesus, led Him away, and took Him into the house of the high priest. And Peter followed at a distance. | 54Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off. |
When those present had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. | 55And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them. |
A servant girl saw him seated in the firelight and looked intently at him. “This man also was with Him,” she said. | 56But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him. |
But Peter denied it. “Woman, I do not know Him,” he said. | 57And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not. |
A short time later, someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” | 58And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not. |
About an hour later, another man insisted, “Certainly this man was with Him, for he too is a Galilean.” | 59And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean. |
“Man, I do not know what you are talking about,” Peter replied. While he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. | 60And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. |
And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word that the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” | 61And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. |
And he went outside and wept bitterly. | 62And Peter went out, and wept bitterly. |
The men who were holding Jesus began to mock Him and beat Him. | 63And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. |
They blindfolded Him and kept demanding, “Prophesy! Who hit You?” | 64And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? |
And they said many other blasphemous things against Him. | 65And many other things blasphemously spake they against him. |
At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and scribes, met together. They led Jesus into their Sanhedrin and said, | 66And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, |
“If You are the Christ, tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe. | 67Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: |
And if I ask you a question, you will not answer. | 68And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. |
But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” | 69Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. |
So they all asked, “Are You then the Son of God?” He replied, “You say that I am.” | 70Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. |
“Why do we need any more testimony?” they declared. “We have heard it for ourselves from His own lips.” | 71And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth. |
