The Parable of the Ten Virgins
1Τότε (Then) ὁμοιωθήσεται (will be likened) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) δέκα (to ten) παρθένοις (virgins), αἵτινες (who) λαβοῦσαι (having taken) τὰς (the) λαμπάδας (lamps) ἑαυτῶν (of them), ἐξῆλθον (went forth) εἰς (to) ὑπάντησιν (meet) τοῦ (the) νυμφίου (bridegroom).
2πέντε (Five) δὲ (now) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) ἦσαν (were) μωραὶ (foolish), καὶ (and) πέντε (five) φρόνιμοι (wise).
3αἱ (The) γὰρ (for) μωραὶ (foolish), λαβοῦσαι (having taken) τὰς (the) λαμπάδας (lamps) ‹αὐτῶν› (of them), οὐκ (not) ἔλαβον (did take) μεθ’ (with) ἑαυτῶν (them) ἔλαιον (oil);
4αἱ (-) δὲ (but) φρόνιμοι (the wise) ἔλαβον (took) ἔλαιον (oil) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἀγγείοις (vessels), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) λαμπάδων (lamps) ἑαυτῶν (of them).
5χρονίζοντος (Tarrying) δὲ (then) τοῦ (the) νυμφίου (bridegroom), ἐνύσταξαν (they became drowsy) πᾶσαι (all) καὶ (and) ἐκάθευδον (were sleeping).
6Μέσης (At middle) δὲ (then) νυκτὸς (of the night), κραυγὴ (a cry) γέγονεν (there was): ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) νυμφίος (bridegroom)! ἐξέρχεσθε (Go forth) εἰς (to) ἀπάντησιν (meet) ‹αὐτοῦ› (him)!’
7Τότε (Then) ἠγέρθησαν (arose) πᾶσαι (all) αἱ (the) παρθένοι (virgins) ἐκεῖναι (those) καὶ (and) ἐκόσμησαν (trimmed) τὰς (the) λαμπάδας (lamps) ἑαυτῶν (of them).
8αἱ (-) δὲ (And) μωραὶ (the foolish) ταῖς (to the) φρονίμοις (wise) εἶπαν (said), ‘Δότε (Give) ἡμῖν (us) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) ἐλαίου (oil) ὑμῶν (of you), ὅτι (for) αἱ (the) λαμπάδες (lamps) ἡμῶν (of us) σβέννυνται (are going out).’
9Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) δὲ (then) αἱ (the) φρόνιμοι (wise), λέγουσαι (saying), ‘Μή¦Ποτε (Lest) οὐ (no) μὴ (not even) ἀρκέσῃ (it might suffice) ἡμῖν (for us) καὶ (and) ὑμῖν (you). πορεύεσθε (Go) μᾶλλον (rather) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (those) πωλοῦντας (selling), καὶ (and) ἀγοράσατε (buy) ἑαυταῖς (for yourselves).’
10Ἀπερχομένων (While are going away) δὲ (then) αὐτῶν (they) ἀγοράσαι (to buy), ἦλθεν (came) ὁ (the) νυμφίος (bridegroom), καὶ (and) αἱ (those) ἕτοιμοι (ready) εἰσῆλθον (went in) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) γάμους (wedding feast); καὶ (and) ἐκλείσθη (was shut) ἡ (the) θύρα (door).
11Ὕστερον (Afterward) δὲ (then) ἔρχονται (come) καὶ (also) αἱ (the) λοιπαὶ (other) παρθένοι (virgins), λέγουσαι (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), κύριε (Lord), ἄνοιξον (open) ἡμῖν (to us)!’
12Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐκ (not) οἶδα (I do know) ὑμᾶς (you).’
13Γρηγορεῖτε (Watch) οὖν (therefore), ὅτι (for) οὐκ (neither) οἴδατε (do you know) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day), οὐδὲ (nor) τὴν (the) ὥραν (hour).a
The Parable of the Talents
(Luke 19:11-27)
14Ὥσπερ (It is like) γὰρ (for) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἀποδημῶν (going on a journey) ἐκάλεσεν (who called) τοὺς (the) ἰδίους (own) δούλους (servants), καὶ (and) παρέδωκεν (delivered) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) ὑπάρχοντα (possessing) αὐτοῦ (of him).
15καὶ (And) ᾧ (to one) μὲν (indeed) ἔδωκεν (he gave) πέντε (five) τάλαντα (talents),b ᾧ (to one) δὲ (then) δύο (two), ᾧ (to one) δὲ (then) ἕν (one), ἑκάστῳ (to each) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἰδίαν (own) δύναμιν (ability); καὶ (and) ἀπεδήμησεν (he left the region) Εὐθέως (immediately).
16Πορευθεὶς (Having gone), ὁ (the one) τὰ (the) πέντε (five) τάλαντα (talents) λαβὼν (having received) ἠργάσατο (traded) ἐν (with) αὐτοῖς (them) καὶ (and) ἐκέρδησεν (made) ἄλλα (more) πέντε (five).
17ὡσαύτως (Likewise), ὁ (the one with) τὰ (the) δύο (two) ἐκέρδησεν (gained) ἄλλα (more) δύο (two).
18ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) τὸ (-) ἓν (one) λαβὼν (having received), ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), ὤρυξεν (dug in) γῆν (the ground) καὶ (and) ἔκρυψεν (hid) τὸ (the) ἀργύριον (money) τοῦ (of the) κυρίου (master) αὐτοῦ (of him).
19Μετὰ (After) δὲ (then) πολὺν (much) χρόνον (time), ἔρχεται (comes) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τῶν (of the) δούλων (servants) ἐκείνων (those) καὶ (and) συναίρει (takes) λόγον (account) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them).
20καὶ (And) προσελθὼν (having come), ὁ (the one) τὰ (the) πέντε (five) τάλαντα (talents) λαβὼν (having received) προσήνεγκεν (brought to him) ἄλλα (other) πέντε (five) τάλαντα (talents), λέγων (saying), ‘Κύριε (Master), πέντε (five) τάλαντά (talents) μοι (to me) παρέδωκας (you did deliver). ἴδε (Behold), ἄλλα (more) πέντε (five) τάλαντα (talents) ἐκέρδησα (have I gained).’
21Ἔφη (Said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ‘Εὖ (Well done), δοῦλε (servant) ἀγαθὲ (good) καὶ (and) πιστέ (faithful)! ἐπὶ (Over) ὀλίγα (a few things) ἦς (you were) πιστός (faithful); ἐπὶ (over) πολλῶν (many things) σε (you) καταστήσω (will I set). εἴσελθε (Enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χαρὰν (joy) τοῦ (of the) κυρίου (master) σου (of you)!’
22Προσελθὼν (Having come) ‹δὲ› (then) καὶ (also) ὁ (the one) τὰ (with the) δύο (two) τάλαντα (talents), εἶπεν (he said), ‘Κύριε (Master), δύο (two) τάλαντά (talents) μοι (to me) παρέδωκας (you did deliver). ἴδε (Behold), ἄλλα (more) δύο (two) τάλαντα (talents) ἐκέρδησα (have I gained).’
23Ἔφη (Said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ‘Εὖ (Well done), δοῦλε (servant) ἀγαθὲ (good) καὶ (and) πιστέ (faithful)! ἐπὶ (Over) ὀλίγα (a few things) ἦς (you were) πιστός (faithful); ἐπὶ (over) πολλῶν (many things) σε (you) καταστήσω (will I set). εἴσελθε (Enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χαρὰν (joy) τοῦ (of the) κυρίου (master) σου (of you)!’
24Προσελθὼν (Having come) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) ὁ (the one) τὸ (the) ἓν (one) τάλαντον (talent) εἰληφὼς (having received), εἶπεν (he said), ‘Κύριε (Master), ἔγνων (I knew) σε (you), ὅτι (that) σκληρὸς (hard) εἶ (you are) ἄνθρωπος (a man), θερίζων (reaping) ὅπου (where) οὐκ (not) ἔσπειρας (you did sow), καὶ (and) συνάγων (gathering) ὅθεν (from where) οὐ (not) διεσκόρπισας (you did scatter).
25καὶ (And) φοβηθεὶς (having been afraid), ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), ἔκρυψα (I hid) τὸ (the) τάλαντόν (talent) σου (of you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) γῇ (ground). ἴδε (Behold), ἔχεις (you have) τὸ (what is) σόν (yours).’
26Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Πονηρὲ (Wicked) δοῦλε (servant) καὶ (and) ὀκνηρέ (lazy)! ᾔδεις (You knew) ὅτι (that) θερίζω (I reap) ὅπου (where) οὐκ (not) ἔσπειρα (I sowed), καὶ (and) συνάγω (gather) ὅθεν (from where) οὐ (not) διεσκόρπισα (I scattered).
27ἔδει (It behooved) σε (you) οὖν (therefore) βαλεῖν (to put) τὰ (the) ἀργύριά (money) μου (of me) τοῖς (to the) τραπεζίταις (bankers), καὶ (and) ἐλθὼν (having come), ἐγὼ (I) ἐκομισάμην (would have received) ἂν (-) τὸ (-) ἐμὸν (my own) σὺν (with) τόκῳ (interest).
28Ἄρατε (Take) οὖν (therefore) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him) τὸ (the) τάλαντον (talent), καὶ (and) δότε (give it) τῷ (to the one) ἔχοντι (having) τὰ (the) δέκα (ten) τάλαντα (talents).
29τῷ (-) γὰρ (For) ἔχοντι (having), παντὶ (to everyone) δοθήσεται (will be given), καὶ (and) περισσευθήσεται (he will have in abundance); τοῦ (the one) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἔχοντος (having), καὶ (even) ὃ (that which) ἔχει (he has) ἀρθήσεται (will be taken away) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him).
30καὶ (And) τὸν (the) ἀχρεῖον (worthless) δοῦλον (servant), ἐκβάλετε (cast out) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) τὸ (-) ἐξώτερον (outer); ἐκεῖ (there) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of the) ὀδόντων (teeth).’
The Sheep and the Goats
31Ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) ἔλθῃ (comes) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δόξῃ (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him), τότε (then) καθίσει (He will sit) ἐπὶ (upon the) θρόνου (throne) δόξης (of glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him).
32καὶ (And) συναχθήσονται (will be gathered) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations), καὶ (and) ἀφορίσει (He will separate) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀπ’ (from) ἀλλήλων (one another), ὥσπερ (as) ὁ (the) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ἀφορίζει (separates) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἐρίφων (goats).
33καὶ (And) στήσει (He will set) τὰ (-) μὲν (indeed) πρόβατα (the sheep) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τὰ (-) δὲ (and) ἐρίφια (the goats) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left).
34Τότε (Then) ἐρεῖ (will say) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τοῖς (to those) ἐκ (on) δεξιῶν (the right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ‘Δεῦτε (Come), οἱ (those) εὐλογημένοι (being blessed) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of me), κληρονομήσατε (inherit) τὴν (the) ἡτοιμασμένην (having been prepared) ὑμῖν (for you) βασιλείαν (kingdom) ἀπὸ (from the) καταβολῆς (foundation) κόσμου (of the world).
35ἐπείνασα (I hungered) γὰρ (for), καὶ (and) ἐδώκατέ (you gave) μοι (Me) φαγεῖν (to eat); ἐδίψησα (I thirsted), καὶ (and) ἐποτίσατέ (you gave to drink) με (me); ξένος (a stranger) ἤμην (I was), καὶ (and) συνηγάγετέ (you took in) με (Me);
36γυμνὸς (naked), καὶ (and) περιεβάλετέ (you clothed) με (Me); ἠσθένησα (I was sick), καὶ (and) ἐπεσκέψασθέ (you visited) με (Me); ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison) ἤμην (I was), καὶ (and) ἤλθατε (you came) πρός (to) με (Me).’
37Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθήσονται (will answer) αὐτῷ (Him) οἱ (the) δίκαιοι (righteous), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), πότε (when) σε (You) εἴδομεν (saw we) πεινῶντα (hungering), καὶ (and) ἐθρέψαμεν (fed You)? ἢ (Or) διψῶντα (thirsting), καὶ (and) ἐποτίσαμεν (gave You to drink)?
38πότε (When) δέ (now) σε (You) εἴδομεν (saw we) ξένον (a stranger), καὶ (and) συνηγάγομεν (took You in)? ἢ (Or) γυμνὸν (naked), καὶ (and) περιεβάλομεν (clothed You)?
39πότε (When) δέ (now) σε (You) εἴδομεν (saw we) ἀσθενοῦντα (ailing) ἢ (or) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison), καὶ (and) ἤλθομεν (came) πρός (to) σε (You)?’
40Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) ἐρεῖ (will say) αὐτοῖς (to them), ‘Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐφ’ (to the extent) ὅσον (as much as) ἐποιήσατε (you did it) ἑνὶ (to one) τούτων (of these) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) μου (of Me) τῶν (the) ἐλαχίστων (least), ἐμοὶ (to Me) ἐποιήσατε (you did it).’
41Τότε (Then) ἐρεῖ (will He say) καὶ (also) τοῖς (to those) ἐξ (on) εὐωνύμων (the left), ‘Πορεύεσθε (Depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me), ‹οἱ› (those) κατηραμένοι (being cursed), εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) τὸ (-) αἰώνιον (eternal), τὸ (-) ἡτοιμασμένον (having been prepared) τῷ (for the) διαβόλῳ (devil) καὶ (and) τοῖς (the) ἀγγέλοις (angels) αὐτοῦ (of him).
42ἐπείνασα (I hungered) γὰρ (for), καὶ (and) οὐκ (nothing) ἐδώκατέ (you gave) μοι (to Me) φαγεῖν (to eat); (καὶ) (and) ἐδίψησα (I thirsted), καὶ (and) οὐκ (nothing) ἐποτίσατέ (You gave to drink) με (Me);
43ξένος (a stranger) ἤμην (I was), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) συνηγάγετέ (You took in) με (Me); γυμνὸς (naked), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) περιεβάλετέ (you did clothe) με (Me); ἀσθενὴς (sick) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐπεσκέψασθέ (did you visit) με (Me).’
44Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθήσονται (will answer) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (themselves), λέγοντες (saying), ‘Κύριε (Lord), πότε (when) σε (You) εἴδομεν (saw we) πεινῶντα (hungering), ἢ (or) διψῶντα (thirsting), ἢ (or) ξένον (a stranger), ἢ (or) γυμνὸν (naked), ἢ (or) ἀσθενῆ (sick), ἢ (or) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) διηκονήσαμέν (did minister) σοι (to You)?’
45Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθήσεται (will He answer) αὐτοῖς (them), λέγων (saying), ‘Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐφ’ (to the extent) ὅσον (that) οὐκ (not) ἐποιήσατε (you did it) ἑνὶ (to one) τούτων (of these) τῶν (the) ἐλαχίστων (least), οὐδὲ (neither) ἐμοὶ (to Me) ἐποιήσατε (did you).’
46Καὶ (And) ἀπελεύσονται (will go away) οὗτοι (these) εἰς (into) κόλασιν (punishment) αἰώνιον (eternal); οἱ (-) δὲ (but) δίκαιοι (the righteous) εἰς (into) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).”
