In the style of the Hebrews, "sister" had equal latitude with "brother." It is used, not only for a sister by natural relation, from the same father and mother, but also for a sister by the same father only, or by the same mother only; or for any near female relative, Genesis 12:13. See BROTHER.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary1. (n.) A female who has the same parents with another person, or who has one of them only. In the latter case, she is more definitely called a half sister. The correlative of brother.
2. (n.) A woman who is closely allied to, or associated with, another person, as in the same faith, society, order, or community.
