You alone are to be feared.

God alone rules over every nation and power. Israel lived among peoples devoted to many gods, yet Yahweh had shown Himself to be the living and sovereign God through His covenant, deliverance, and judgments. Proper fear of Him is reverent awe before His holiness, authority, and justice.

Deu 6:13 Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths…
1Sa 12:24 Above all, fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully…
Isa 8:13 The LORD of Hosts is the One you shall regard as holy.…

When You are angry,

Gen 19:24 Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire…
Exo 9:23 So Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven,…

and the earth feared

The nations recognized the power of the God who defends the oppressed and judges the wicked. His acts in history, including the deliverance of Israel and the defeat of proud rulers, showed that no kingdom stands beyond His rule.

Hab 3:6 He stood and measured the earth; He looked…
Psa 114:7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord…

Mrk 4:39 Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the sea.…

Selah

The psalm pauses here—Selah, possibly a musical or liturgical marker inviting reflection—to consider the certainty of God’s justice, salvation, and care for the lowly.

Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.…
Hab 3:13 You went forth for the salvation of Your people…
Dan 7:10 A river of fire was flowing, coming out from His presence.…

Even the wrath of man shall praise You;

Human rebellion cannot frustrate God’s rule. Joseph’s brothers meant evil against him, yet God used their sin to preserve Jacob’s family during famine. The rulers who delivered Jesus to be crucified acted wickedly, but their actions fulfilled God’s purpose in providing redemption. God is not the author of sin, yet He overrules human anger and opposition so that His justice, power, and mercy are displayed.

Act 4:27-28 In fact, this is the very city where Herod and Pontius Pilate…
Gen 50:20 As for you, what you intended against me for evil,…
Exo 9:16 But I have raised you up for this very purpose…

with the survivors of wrath You will clothe Yourself.

Those who remain after God’s judgment stand as evidence of His faithfulness. Throughout Israel’s history, God preserved a remnant when nations fell and judgment came upon the land. Their preservation brought honor to Him, showing that He keeps His covenant and accomplishes His purposes. The image presents God as clothed with the outcome of His victory over wrath and judgment.

Isa 10:20-22 On that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors…
Isa 59:17 He put on righteousness like a breastplate,…
Rev 19:13-16 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood,…

Make and fulfill your vows to the LORD your God;

Vows made to the LORD were binding commitments and were not to be delayed or neglected. Israel’s worship required integrity: gratitude, dependence, and promises made in times of need were to be followed by faithful obedience.

Psa 50:14 Sacrifice a thank offering to God, and fulfill your vows…
Ecc 5:4-5 When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it,…
Deu 23:21-23 If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow…

let all the neighboring lands bring tribute to Him

The nations surrounding Israel were called to acknowledge the LORD as the true King. Tribute expressed submission to a sovereign ruler, anticipating the day when all peoples will recognize God’s authority.

Psa 72:10-11 May the kings of Tarshish and distant shores bring tribute;…
Isa 60:5-7 Then you will look and be radiant, and your heart will…
Psa 68:29 Because of Your temple at Jerusalem kings will bring…

who is to be feared.

The LORD’s deliverance of His people and defeat of proud rulers reveal His holy power. He is to be regarded with reverence, for no king, army, or nation can stand against His judgment.

Jer 10:7 Who would not fear You, O King of nations? This is Your due.…
Psa 96:4 For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised;…

He breaks the spirits of princes;

God humbles rulers who exalt themselves against Him, showing that their power is limited and accountable to His rule. Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar, and the kings of fallen empires learned that no throne stands secure apart from God’s will.

Psa 107:40 He pours out contempt on the nobles…
Job 12:21 He pours out contempt on nobles and disarms the mighty.
Isa 40:23 He brings the princes to nothing and makes the rulers…

He is feared by the kings of the earth.

Even the greatest earthly authorities stand under His judgment. Their recognition of His power anticipates the day when every nation will submit to the reign of Christ, the King of kings.

Psa 2:10-12 Therefore be wise, O kings; be admonished…
Jer 10:7 Who would not fear You, O King of nations? This is Your due.…
Rev 15:4 Who will not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name?…
