Isaiah 25

Praise to the Victorious God

O LORD, You are my God!

Isaiah responds to the Lord with personal trust and covenant devotion. In the setting of God’s judgment on the nations and His promised salvation for His people, the prophet acknowledges that Israel’s God alone rules history.

Psa 118:28 You are my God, and I will give You thanks.…
Psa 63:1 A Psalm of David, when he was in the Wilderness…
Exo 15:2 He is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God,…

I will exalt You;

He pledges public honor to the Lord, whose greatness is displayed in both judgment and deliverance.

Psa 57:5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; may Your glory…
Psa 99:5 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at His footstool…
Psa 34:3 Magnify the LORD with me; let us exalt His name together.

I will praise Your name.

God’s name represents His revealed character. Praise recognizes His holiness, power, justice, and faithfulness.

Psa 54:6 Freely I will sacrifice to You; I will praise Your name…
Psa 9:2 I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise……
Psa 86:12 I will praise You, O Lord my God, with all my heart;…

For You have worked wonders—

The Lord’s mighty acts include His past deliverance of His people and His certain overthrow of arrogant powers that oppose Him.

Psa 77:14 You are the God who works wonders; You display Your strength…
Psa 86:10 For You are great and perform wonders; You alone are God.
Exo 15:11 Who among the gods is like You, O LORD? Who is like You…

plans formed long ago—

What God accomplishes in history proceeds according to His settled purpose. Neither human rebellion nor international rulers can overturn His designs.

Isa 37:26 Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it;…
Isa 46:10 I declare the end from the beginning, and from ancient times…
Psa 33:11 The counsel of the LORD stands forever, …

in perfect faithfulness.

The Lord fulfills what He has determined and promised. His judgments are righteous, and His salvation of His people is certain.

Psa 89:8 O LORD God of Hosts, who is like You? O mighty LORD…
Lam 3:23 They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!
Deu 32:4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just.…

Indeed, You have made the city a heap of rubble,

God is praised for overthrowing proud powers that set themselves against Him. The unnamed city represents the great centers of human rebellion and oppression that seemed secure but fell under His judgment.

Mic 3:12 Therefore, because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field…
Isa 17:1 This is the burden against Damascus: “Behold, …

the fortified town a ruin.

Walls, armies, and strongholds could not preserve a people from the decree of God. Even the most defended cities of the ancient world were vulnerable when their rulers persisted in pride and violence.

2Ki 19:25 Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it;…
Isa 37:26 Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it;…

The fortress of strangers is a city no more;

Foreign nations that oppressed God’s people and resisted His rule would not endure. Their political power, wealth, and military strength would be brought to nothing.

Ezk 26:21 I will make you an object of horror, and you will be no more…
Jer 51:62 O LORD, You have promised to cut off this place…

it will never be rebuilt.

The judgment is complete and irreversible. What God destroys in His righteous wrath cannot be restored by human effort, anticipating the final removal of every kingdom opposed to His reign.

Ezk 26:14 I will make you a bare rock, and you will become a place…
Jer 51:26 No one shall retrieve from you a cornerstone…

Therefore, a strong people will honor You.

God’s victory over the powers that oppose Him will lead even mighty nations to acknowledge His rule. Those once marked by pride and resistance will recognize that He alone directs history and judges the earth.

Rev 15:4 Who will not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name?…
Psa 86:9-10 All the nations You have made will come and bow before You…
Psa 22:27-28 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the LORD…

The cities of ruthless nations will revere You.

Centers of military strength, wealth, and oppression will no longer defy the Lord. Their inhabitants will stand in awe of His judgment and deliverance, demonstrating that no kingdom can remain independent of His authority.

Isa 19:18 In that day five cities in the land of Egypt…
Jer 10:7 Who would not fear You, O King of nations? This is Your due.…
Zep 2:11 The LORD will be terrifying to them when He…

For You have been a refuge for the poor,

God is presented as the defender of those brought low by hardship, oppression, or loss. In Isaiah’s setting of national turmoil and coming judgment, the poor and humble have no lasting security apart from Him.

Psa 9:9 The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold…
Psa 14:6 You sinners frustrate the plans of the oppressed,…

a stronghold for the needy in distress,

Like a fortified city during invasion, the Lord provides safety when human strength and political alliances fail. He preserves those who depend on Him amid fear and need.

Nam 1:7 The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress;…
Psa 18:2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.…

a refuge from the storm,

The storm pictures the destructive force of judgment and hostile powers. God remains a secure shelter when nations rage and calamity threatens.

Isa 4:6 a shelter to give shade from the heat by day…
Psa 55:8 I would hurry to my shelter, far from this raging tempest.”

a shade from the heat.

In the harsh climate of the land, shade offered immediate relief from the sun. The image portrays God’s care for His people under the pressure of affliction and enemy oppression.

Psa 121:5-6 The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is the shade…
Isa 49:10 They will not hunger or thirst, nor will scorching heat…

For the breath of the ruthless is like rain against a wall,

The threats of violent rulers may strike with force, but they cannot overcome the protection God provides. Their power is real, yet it is limited before the Lord, who stands as an unbreachable defense for the afflicted.

Psa 62:3 How long will you threaten a man? Will all of you throw him…
Isa 30:13-14 This iniquity of yours is like a breach about to fail…

like heat in a dry land.

The fierce heat of the desert pictures the pressure of hostile nations upon Judah. Israel’s wilderness history had shown how quickly physical hardship exposed human weakness and the need for God’s provision.

Psa 63:1 A Psalm of David, when he was in the Wilderness…
Isa 32:2 Each will be like a shelter from the wind…
Psa 121:6 The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.

You subdue the uproar of foreigners.

Foreign powers repeatedly threatened God’s people with invasion, tribute, and exile. Their noise and violence were not beyond the Lord’s rule; He restrains nations and overturns their plans according to His purpose.

2Sa 22:45 Foreigners cower before me; when they hear me, they obey me.
Psa 66:3 Say to God, “How awesome are Your deeds!…
Psa 47:3 He subdues nations beneath us, and peoples under our feet.

As the shade of a cloud cools the heat,

God’s protection brings relief as surely as shade shelters travelers from the burning sun. His presence sustained Israel in the wilderness and remained the nation’s only true refuge amid danger.

Isa 4:5-6 Then the LORD will create over all of Mount Zion…
Psa 105:39 He spread a cloud as a covering and a fire…
Exo 13:21 And the LORD went before them in a pillar of cloud…

so the song of the ruthless is silenced.

The proud celebrations, threats, and boasts of oppressors will end when God judges them. The downfall of arrogant empires anticipates the final removal of all rebellion against the Lord and His reign.

Ezk 26:13 So I will silence the sound of your songs,…
Rev 18:22 And the sound of harpists and musicians,…

On this mountain

Mount Zion in Jerusalem, where the temple stood as the earthly sign of the Lord’s dwelling among His covenant people, becomes the setting for a future act of divine salvation.

Isa 2:2 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD…
Mic 4:1 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD…

the LORD of Hosts

The sovereign God, ruler of heaven’s armies and all creation, will personally accomplish what no human power can achieve.

Psa 24:10 Who is He, this King of Glory? The LORD of Hosts…
1Sa 17:45 But David said to the Philistine, “You come against me…

will prepare a lavish banquet

The banquet portrays the joy, peace, and abundance of God’s coming kingdom after He removes oppression and death.

Mat 22:2 The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding…
Luk 14:16 But Jesus replied, “A certain man prepared a great banquet…

for all the peoples,

God’s blessing will extend beyond Israel to the nations, fulfilling His purpose to bring people from every land under His reign.

Isa 49:6 “It is not enough for You to be My Servant,”…
Luk 13:29 People will come from east and west and north and south,…
Mat 8:11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west…

a feast of aged wine,

The richest provisions of a royal celebration picture the fullness and lasting quality of God’s salvation.

Jer 48:11 Moab has been at ease from youth, settled like wine…
Pro 9:5 “Come, eat my bread and drink the wine I have mixed.

of choice meat,

Nothing inferior is offered; the Lord supplies what is best for those gathered to Him.

Gen 18:7-8 Meanwhile, Abraham ran to the herd, selected a tender and…
Luk 15:23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us feast…

of finely aged wine.

The repeated image emphasizes the completeness of the coming celebration and the certainty of God’s fulfilled promises.

Jhn 2:10 Everyone serves the fine wine first, and then the cheap wine…
Sng 7:9 and your mouth like the finest wine.…

On this mountain

Mount Zion, the site of the temple in Jerusalem, represented God’s dwelling among His people and the center of worship under the covenant. Isaiah also presents it as the place from which the Lord will establish His righteous reign over the nations.

Isa 2:2-3 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD…
Mic 4:1-2 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD…
Psa 48:1-2 A Psalm of the sons of Korah. Great is the LORD…

He will swallow up the shroud that enfolds all peoples,

Death and mourning lie over all humanity because of sin. The Lord will remove this universal burden completely, ending death’s power and bringing His people into lasting life.

1Co 15:54-55 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable…
Hos 13:14 I will ransom them from the power of Sheol;…
Heb 2:14-15 Now since the children have flesh and blood,…

the sheet that covers all nations;

No nation is beyond the reach of death, and no nation is excluded from God’s promised deliverance. The coming kingdom will bring an end to the separation, sorrow, and ruin caused by death.

Isa 60:2 For behold, darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness…
2Co 3:14-16 But their minds were closed. For to this day, the same veil…
2Co 4:3-4 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who…

He will swallow up death forever.

God promises the final destruction of death, the enemy that entered human experience through sin. Isaiah looks beyond Israel’s immediate troubles to the future reign of God, when resurrection life will replace mortality and death will no longer hold power over His people.

1Co 15:54-55 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable…
Hos 13:14 I will ransom them from the power of Sheol;…
Rev 20:14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire.…

The Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from every face

The future restoration will include the end of grief, suffering, and loss. God’s care is personal as well as universal, bringing lasting comfort to those who have endured sorrow under the curse of sin and death.

Rev 21:4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes…
Rev 7:17 For the Lamb in the center of the throne…
Isa 65:19 I will rejoice in Jerusalem and take delight in My people…

and remove the disgrace of His people from the whole earth.

Israel had known shame through judgment, exile, and oppression among the nations. God will publicly vindicate His people, removing their reproach and restoring the honor of those who belong to Him. The promise ultimately includes all who share in God’s redeemed people.

Ezk 36:15 I will no longer allow the taunts of the nations…
Isa 61:7 Instead of shame, My people will have a double portion…
Zep 3:19-20 Behold, at that time, I will deal with all who afflict you.…

For the LORD has spoken.

The certainty of this future rests on God’s own declaration. His purpose cannot fail, and His promise of victory, restoration, and comfort will be fulfilled.

Isa 46:11 I summon a bird of prey from the east, a man for My purpose…
Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me…
Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,…

And in that day it will be said,

God’s final victory over death and the nations will bring public acknowledgment of His saving power. His people will see the fulfillment of all He promised.

Zec 14:9 On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—…
Mic 4:6 “On that day,” declares the LORD, “I will gather the lame;…
Jol 3:18 And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine…

“Surely this is our God;

The redeemed will recognize the Lord not as an unknown deliverer but as the covenant God who has remained faithful to His people.

Psa 48:14 For this God is our God forever and ever;…
Psa 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us,…
1Ki 18:39 When all the people saw this, they fell facedown…

we have waited for Him,

Throughout suffering, oppression, and judgment, the faithful have trusted that God would act according to His purpose and timing.

Psa 33:20 Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield.
Psa 130:5 I wait for the LORD; my soul does wait, and in His word…
Gen 49:18 I await Your salvation, O LORD.

and He has saved us.

His salvation includes deliverance from enemies, judgment, and death, ultimately fulfilled through the Messiah’s redemptive work.

Exo 15:2 He is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God,…
Psa 118:14 The LORD is my strength and my song, and He has become…
Psa 98:3 He has remembered His love and faithfulness…

This is the LORD for whom we have waited.

The repeated confession strengthens the certainty that the Lord Himself has accomplished what no human ruler or nation could achieve.

Psa 27:14 Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous.…
Psa 25:5 Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God…
Lam 3:25 The LORD is good to those who wait for Him,…

Let us rejoice and be glad in His salvation.”

Joy is the fitting response of those delivered by God, who enter the peace and blessing of His completed kingdom.

Psa 40:16 May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;…
Hab 3:18 yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice…
Psa 35:9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD…

For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain.

The Lord’s settled presence will remain on Mount Zion, bringing security and blessing to His people. Jerusalem stands as the place of His rule and the center of His kingdom.

Psa 132:13-14 For the LORD has chosen Zion; He has desired it…
Isa 4:5-6 Then the LORD will create over all of Mount Zion…
Psa 48:1-3 A Psalm of the sons of Korah. Great is the LORD…

But Moab will be trampled in his place

While Zion receives the Lord’s favor, Moab faces judgment. Located east of the Dead Sea, Moab had long opposed Israel and was known for pride and hostility toward God’s people. Its defeat shows that no nation can withstand the Lord’s authority.

Num 24:17 I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near.…
Jer 48:1-2 Concerning Moab, this is what the LORD of Hosts,…
Isa 15:1-2 This is the burden against Moab: Ar in Moab is ruined…

as straw is trodden into the dung pile.

Moab’s downfall will be complete and humiliating. Like straw crushed into refuse, its strength and pride will be reduced to nothing under God’s judgment.

Mal 4:3 Then you will trample the wicked, for they will be ashes…
Jer 8:2 They will be exposed to the sun and moon…
Psa 83:10 who perished at Endor and became like dung on the ground.

He will spread out his hands within it,

The Lord enters Moab’s stronghold in judgment, reaching into the very place where its people sought safety.

Lam 1:17 Zion stretches out her hands, but there is no one…
Isa 1:15 When you spread out your hands in prayer…
Psa 143:6 I stretch out my hands to You; my soul thirsts for You…

as a swimmer spreads his arms to swim.

The image portrays steady, effortless movement through the land. Moab cannot escape or resist the advance of God’s judgment.

Jon 2:3-6 For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas,…
Psa 69:1-2 For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David.…
Psa 124:4-5 then the floods would have engulfed us, then the torrent…

His pride will be brought low,

Moab was known for its arrogance, confidence, and self-exaltation. Its national pride would collapse before the Lord.

Isa 16:6 We have heard of Moab’s pomposity, his exceeding pride…
Jer 48:29-30 We have heard of Moab’s pomposity, his pride…
Zep 2:8-10 I have heard the reproach of Moab and the insults…

despite the skill of his hands.

Neither military strength, political strategy, nor human achievement could preserve Moab when God acted against it.

Exo 31:3-5 And I have filled him with the Spirit of God…
Isa 44:12-13 The blacksmith takes a tool and labors over the coals;…

The high-walled fortress

Moab’s fortified cities represented its confidence in military strength and national security. Though protected by walls and strongholds, they could not withstand the Lord’s judgment.

Deu 28:52 They will besiege all the cities throughout your land,…
Jer 51:58 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Babylon’s thick walls……
Isa 2:15 against every high tower, against every fortified wall,

will be brought down,

God would overthrow the defenses in which Moab trusted. Their fall would show that no nation’s power or preparation can resist His decree.

Isa 26:5 For He has humbled those who dwell on high;…
Jer 48:18 Come down from your glory; sit on parched ground…
Jer 49:16 The terror you cause and the pride of your heart…

cast to the ground,

The destruction would be decisive and humiliating, reducing what appeared secure and exalted to defeat.

Ezk 28:17 Your heart grew proud of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom…
Lam 2:2 Without pity the Lord has swallowed up…
Oba 1:4 Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest…

into the dust.

Moab’s strongholds would be brought to ruin, leaving no basis for pride or self-reliance.

Job 16:15 I have sewn sackcloth over my skin; I have…
Psa 7:5 then may my enemy pursue me and overtake me;…
Isa 47:1 Go down and sit in the dust, O Virgin Daughter of Babylon.…
