The Destruction of Idols

When all this had ended,

After the Passover celebration, temple service, and covenant renewal under Hezekiah had concluded, the gathered people extended the reforms beyond Jerusalem.

2Ch 29:35-36 Furthermore, the burnt offerings were abundant…
2Ch 30:26-27 So there was great rejoicing in Jerusalem,…

the Israelites in attendance went out to the cities of Judah

Israelites from Judah, Benjamin, and remnants of the northern tribes had joined the feast. Their shared action showed renewed devotion to the LORD despite the division of the kingdoms.

2Ch 30:10-11 And the couriers traveled from city to city…
2Ch 34:33 And Josiah removed all the abominations from all the lands…

and broke up the sacred pillars,

He destroyed objects associated with pagan worship and practices forbidden in Israel, including the sacred pillars.

Deu 7:5 Instead, this is what you are to do to them:…
2Ki 23:14 He smashed the sacred pillars to pieces,…

chopped down the Asherah poles,

They chopped down the Asherah poles, eliminating symbols of Canaanite religion that had remained in the land alongside the worship of the LORD.

Deu 12:3 Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars,…
2Ki 23:6 He brought the Asherah pole from the house of the LORD…

and tore down the high places and altars throughout Judah and Benjamin,

The people destroyed unauthorized worship sites that had encouraged idolatry and separated worship from the temple in Jerusalem.

2Ch 14:3-5 He removed the foreign altars and high places,…
2Ki 23:8 Then Josiah brought all the priests from the cities of Judah…

as well as in Ephraim and Manasseh,

The reforms extended into Ephraim and Manasseh, regions of the former northern kingdom. Although Assyria had conquered Israel, many Israelites remained in the land and participated in removing idolatry.

2Ch 15:8 When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Azariah…
2Ch 34:6-7 Josiah did the same in the cities of Manasseh…

until they had utterly destroyed them all.

The work was carried out thoroughly, leaving no recognized centers for the forbidden practices.

2Ki 23:24-25 Furthermore, Josiah removed the mediums and spiritists,…
Deu 12:2-4 Destroy completely all the places where the nations…

Then all the Israelites returned to their cities, each to his own property.

With the celebration and reforms finished, the people returned home to resume life under the restored worship and order established during Hezekiah’s reign.

Jos 24:28 Then Joshua sent the people away, each to his own…
Jos 22:4 And now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest…

Hezekiah reestablished the divisions of the priests and Levites—

Hezekiah restored the order for temple service that David had established, reversing the neglect that had marked Judah under earlier rulers. His reforms returned the nation to the worship God had appointed.

1Ch 24:1-19 These were the divisions of the descendants of Aaron…
1Ch 23:6-32 Then David divided the Levites into divisions…

each of them according to their duties as priests or Levites—

Priests offered sacrifices and carried out duties at the altar, while Levites assisted in the temple, taught God’s Law, and led the people in worship. Each group served within the responsibilities God had assigned.

1Ch 23:28-32 but their duty was to assist the descendants of Aaron…
Num 3:5-10 Then the LORD said to Moses,…

for the burnt offerings and peace offerings,

The burnt offerings expressed complete consecration to the Lord, and the peace offerings marked fellowship with Him. Restoring these sacrifices renewed the regular worship required under the Law.

2Ch 29:31-35 Then Hezekiah said, “Now that you have consecrated…
1Ki 8:62-64 Then the king and all Israel with him offered sacrifices…

for ministry,

Temple service included the many daily responsibilities necessary for the worship of God, from caring for the sacred courts to instructing and assisting the people.

Num 8:24-26 “This applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years”…
2Ch 29:11 Now, my sons, do not be negligent, for the LORD…

for giving thanks,

Hezekiah ensured that gratitude to the Lord was again part of Judah’s public worship, acknowledging His mercy, provision, and covenant faithfulness.

1Ch 16:4-7 David appointed some of the Levites to minister…
Neh 12:24 The leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah,…

and for singing praises

Levites appointed for music led the people in honoring the Lord with songs of praise, continuing the pattern established during David’s reign.

1Ch 25:1-3 Additionally, David and the commanders of the army…
2Ch 5:13-14 The trumpeters and singers joined together to praise…

at the gates of the LORD’s dwelling.

The temple gates opened into the place set apart for God’s worship. Their service there reminded the nation that approaching the Lord required reverence, thanksgiving, and obedience.

1Ch 9:17-27 These were the gatekeepers: Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, Ahiman…
1Ch 26:1-19 These were the divisions of the gatekeepers:…

Contributions for Worship

The king contributed from his own possessions

Hezekiah personally supplied the resources needed for the restored temple worship, demonstrating his commitment to the reforms begun after the cleansing of the temple.

1Ch 29:3-5 Moreover, because of my delight in the house of my God…
2Ch 35:7-9 From his own flocks and herds Josiah contributed…

for the regular morning and evening burnt offerings

These daily sacrifices maintained the continual worship required for Israel and marked the nation’s ongoing devotion to the LORD.

Num 28:3-8 And tell them that this is the food offering…
Exo 29:38-42 This is what you are to offer regularly on the altar…

and for the burnt offerings on the Sabbaths, New Moons, and appointed feasts,

Hezekiah also provided for the offerings connected with Israel’s weekly, monthly, and annual sacred observances, ensuring that the full worship calendar was restored.

Neh 10:33 for the showbread, for the regular grain offerings……
Num 28:9-15 On the Sabbath day, present two unblemished lambs…
Num 29:1-39 “On the first day of the seventh month, you are to hold”…

as written in the Law of the LORD.

The king ordered worship according to the commands God had given through Moses, returning Judah to covenant obedience rather than establishing new practices.

Exo 24:12 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain…
Deu 31:24-26 When Moses had finished writing in a book…
Jos 1:7-8 Above all, be strong and very courageous.…

Moreover, he commanded the people living in Jerusalem

Hezekiah extended his reforms to Jerusalem, Judah’s religious and political center and the location of the temple. His command helped restore the order of worship established in God’s Law after years of neglect under previous rulers.

Neh 11:1-2 Now the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem,…
Neh 12:44-47 And on that same day men were appointed over the rooms…
Neh 13:10-11 I also learned that because the portions for the Levites…

to make a contribution for the priests and Levites

The people were to provide the portions appointed for those serving at the temple. Since the Levites had no tribal land inheritance, their support came from the offerings and tithes of Israel. This provision enabled the priests and Levites to carry out their assigned service without abandoning it to meet personal needs.

Num 18:21 Behold, I have given to the Levites all the tithes…
Neh 10:37-39 Moreover, we will bring to the priests at the storerooms…
Deu 14:28-29 At the end of every three years, bring a tenth…

so that they could devote themselves to the Law of the LORD.

With their material needs supplied, the spiritual leaders could give their attention to teaching, preserving, and administering God’s Law. Hezekiah understood that Judah’s renewal depended upon faithful worship and instruction grounded in the covenant God had given through Moses.

“As soon as the order went out” emphasizes the people’s immediate obedience to Hezekiah’s call to restore support for temple worship. Their prompt response reflected renewed submission to God’s law after years of neglect.

Num 18:12 I give you all the freshest olive oil…
Neh 10:35-37 We will also bring the firstfruits of our land…

Deu 14:22 You must be sure to set aside a tenth of all the produce…
Deu 26:2 you are to take some of the firstfruits of all your produce…

and they brought in an abundance—

“They brought in an abundance” reflects both God’s blessing on the land and the broad participation of the people in Hezekiah’s reforms.

2Ch 29:35 Furthermore, the burnt offerings were abundant…
1Ch 29:14-16 But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able……

They set apart the required tenth to support the Levites and the ministry of the temple, restoring an obligation that had been neglected.

Lev 27:30 Thus any tithe from the land, whether from the seed…
Gen 28:22 And this stone I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house…

And the Israelites and Judahites who lived in the cities of Judah

People from both the northern tribes and Judah participated in Hezekiah’s restoration of worship. Israelites who had come south, likely in response to the Assyrian threat and Hezekiah’s invitation, joined the people of Judah in supporting the temple and its ministry.

also brought a tithe of their herds and flocks

Their offerings, including tithes, or a tenth, followed the requirements of God’s law and provided for the priests and Levites. In an agricultural society, giving from livestock represented a substantial acknowledgment that all provision came from the LORD.

Lev 27:32-33 Every tenth animal from the herd or flock…
Deu 14:22-23 You must be sure to set aside a tenth of all the produce…
Num 18:21 Behold, I have given to the Levites all the tithes…

and a tithe of the holy things consecrated to the LORD their God,

They also brought portions of offerings already dedicated to God. Their obedience demonstrated renewed commitment to the covenant and to the worship established at Jerusalem.

Num 18:8-19 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “Behold, I have put you…
Deu 26:12-13 When you have finished laying aside a tenth…

and they laid them in large heaps.

The abundance of the contributions showed the widespread response to Hezekiah’s reforms. The gathered tithes supplied the temple servants and stood as visible evidence of the people’s renewed faithfulness.

Neh 13:12 and all Judah brought a tenth of the grain…
Mal 3:10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse…
Exo 36:5-7 “The people are bringing more than enough”…

In the third month

Sivan fell in late May and early June, during the wheat harvest and shortly after the Feast of Weeks. Judah’s renewed obedience under Hezekiah included bringing the required firstfruits and tithes to support the priests and Levites.

Exo 23:16 You are also to keep the Feast of Harvest…
Exo 34:22 And you are to celebrate the Feast of Weeks…
Num 28:26 On the day of firstfruits, when you present an offering…

they began building up the heaps,

The offerings of grain, wine, oil, honey, and other produce were so abundant that they formed large piles. The people responded willingly to Hezekiah’s reforms, restoring the provision God had commanded for those serving in the temple.

Neh 10:37-39 Moreover, we will bring to the priests at the storerooms…

and they finished in the seventh month.

By Tishri, in September and October, the harvest had been gathered and the offerings were complete. The extended period of giving showed that the reform was not momentary but continued through the agricultural season and the major sacred observances of the seventh month.

Hezekiah and his officials also recognized the faithfulness of the people who had responded willingly. Though the northern kingdom had fallen, Israel remained the covenant name for God’s people, including Judah and those from the northern tribes who had joined in worship.
