Jehoshaphat Reigns in Judah

Asa’s son Jehoshaphat reigned in his place,

Jehoshaphat succeeded his father Asa as king of Judah, continuing the Davidic dynasty in Jerusalem. Asa had sought to remove idolatry and restore proper worship in Judah, and Jehoshaphat inherited a kingdom strengthened by those reforms. His accession provided stability in Judah while the northern kingdom of Israel continued under rulers who promoted false worship.

1Ki 15:24 And Asa rested with his fathers and was buried…
1Ki 22:41 In the fourth year of Ahab’s reign over Israel,…
2Ch 20:31 So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years…

and he strengthened himself against Israel.

Jehoshaphat fortified Judah’s defenses, stationed forces in key cities, and prepared the kingdom against pressure from the north. Israel and Judah had remained divided since the days of Rehoboam, and their relationship was often marked by rivalry and conflict. By securing Judah’s borders and cities, Jehoshaphat protected the kingdom, its people, and the worship centered in Jerusalem.

2Ch 16:1-6 In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s reign,…
1Ki 15:17-22 Baasha king of Israel went to war against Judah…
2Ch 11:5-12 Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and he built up cities…

He stationed troops in every fortified city of Judah

Jehoshaphat strengthened Judah’s defenses by placing soldiers in its principal strongholds, securing key routes and protecting the kingdom from invasion.

2Ch 11:11 He strengthened their fortifications and put officers…
2Ch 11:12 He also put shields and spears in all the cities…
2Ch 14:6 Because the land was at peace, Asa built fortified cities…

and put garrisons in the land of Judah

Military detachments throughout the land provided a continuing presence beyond the fortified cities, preserving order and enabling a quick response to danger.

2Sa 8:6 Then he placed garrisons in Aram of Damascus,…
1Ch 18:13 He placed garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites…
2Sa 8:14 So the LORD made David victorious wherever he went.…

and in the cities of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured.

Jehoshaphat also maintained Judah’s control over northern towns gained during Asa’s reign, preserving his father’s advances and guarding the border with Israel.

2Ch 15:8 When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Azariah…
2Ch 13:19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured some cities from him…

Now the LORD was with Jehoshaphat

Jehoshaphat ruled Judah during a time when the northern kingdom was marked by idolatry and political instability. God’s favor rested on him as he sought to lead Judah in faithfulness, bringing security and strength to the kingdom.

Gen 39:2 And the LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man…
1Sa 18:14 and he continued to prosper in all his ways,…
2Ch 15:2 So he went out to meet Asa and said to him,…

because he walked in the earlier ways of his father David.

Jehoshaphat followed David’s example of devotion to the LORD and commitment to righteous rule. He upheld the worship of God and governed according to the covenant responsibilities entrusted to David’s royal line.

2Ki 22:2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD…
2Ki 18:3 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD,…
1Ki 9:4 And as for you, if you walk before Me…

He did not seek the Baals,

Rather than adopting the Canaanite fertility cults that had corrupted Israel and influenced many in Judah, Jehoshaphat rejected their gods. His refusal to pursue Baal worship distinguished his reign and preserved Judah’s allegiance to the LORD.

1Sa 7:3-4 Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel,…
Jdg 2:11-13 And the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD…
1Ki 18:21 Then Elijah approached all the people and said,…

but he sought the God of his father

Jehoshaphat followed the example of Asa by turning Judah toward the worship of Yahweh. In contrast to the idolatry spreading through the northern kingdom, he pursued faithful devotion to the God who had made covenant with Israel.

2Ch 15:12 Then they entered into a covenant to seek the LORD,…
1Ch 28:9 As for you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father…
2Ch 20:3 Jehoshaphat was alarmed and set his face to seek the LORD.…

and walked by His commandments

His devotion was expressed in obedience to the Law of Moses. Jehoshaphat’s reign included efforts to strengthen Judah’s knowledge of God’s commands and to restore ordered worship throughout the land.

Deu 5:33 You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God…
1Ki 2:3 And keep the charge of the LORD your God to walk in His ways…
2Ki 18:6 He remained faithful to the LORD and did not turn from…

rather than the practices of Israel.

Israel’s kings had led the northern tribes into calf worship, Baal worship, and other forms of apostasy. Jehoshaphat rejected those corrupt practices, distinguishing Judah’s worship of the Lord from Israel’s rebellion.

2Ki 17:19 and even Judah did not keep the commandments of the LORD…
1Ki 12:28-30 After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves…
2Ki 10:31 Yet Jehu was not careful to follow the instruction…

So the LORD established the kingdom in his hand,

God secured Jehoshaphat’s rule after he followed the ways of his father Asa and removed many idolatrous influences from Judah. His authority rested not merely on political strength but on God’s blessing upon the Davidic throne.

1Ki 2:46 Then the king commanded Benaiah son of Jehoiada,…
2Ch 1:1 Now Solomon son of David established himself…
Dan 2:21 He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings…

and all Judah brought him tribute,

The people of Judah demonstrated their loyalty by bringing gifts and resources to their king. Their united support reflects the stability and confidence that marked the early years of Jehoshaphat’s reign.

2Ch 32:23 Many brought offerings to Jerusalem for the LORD…
2Ch 9:24 Year after year, each visitor would bring his tribute:…
1Ki 10:25 Year after year, each visitor would bring his tribute:…

so that he had an abundance of riches and honor.

Jehoshaphat’s wealth and public esteem were evidence of a prosperous kingdom under God’s favor. Like other faithful kings in Judah’s history, he received honor as he led the nation away from idols and toward obedience to the LORD.

2Ch 1:12 Therefore wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you.…
1Ki 3:13 Moreover, I will give you what you did not request…
1Ch 29:12 Both riches and honor come from You, and You…

And his heart took delight in the ways of the LORD;

Jehoshaphat served the LORD with willing devotion, not merely outward conformity. His commitment shaped his rule and led him to strengthen Judah’s faithfulness to God’s law and worship.

Psa 1:2 But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law…
Deu 10:12 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you…
1Ki 8:61 So let your heart be fully devoted to the LORD our God…

furthermore, he removed the high places and Asherah poles from Judah.

He acted against the idolatrous practices that had corrupted the land, destroying places and symbols connected with false gods. By removing them, Jehoshaphat sought to turn Judah from Canaanite worship and restore exclusive devotion to the LORD.

2Ch 14:3 He removed the foreign altars and high places,…
2Ki 18:4 He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars…
2Ch 31:1 When all this had ended, the Israelites in attendance…

In the third year of his reign,

Jehoshaphat had strengthened Judah and established order in the kingdom. With external security and internal stability, he turned attention to the spiritual instruction of the people.

Jehoshaphat sent his officials

The king used the authority of his administration to promote knowledge of God’s law throughout Judah. His concern extended beyond the court in Jerusalem to the daily life and worship of the nation.

2Ch 30:6-9 At the command of the king, the couriers went…
2Ch 19:5-7 He appointed judges in the land, in each of the fortified…
2Ki 22:3-7 Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, King Josiah sent…

Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Micaiah

These men served as royal representatives—Ben-hail (“son of valor”), Obadiah (“servant of Yahweh”), Zechariah (“Yahweh remembers”), Nethanel (“gift of God”), and Micaiah (“who is like Yahweh”)—in a broader effort that included Levites and priests. Their assignment required trustworthy leaders who would uphold the covenant and communicate its commands faithfully.

2Ch 35:8-9 His officials also contributed willingly to the people…

to teach in the cities of Judah,

The instruction was carried into communities across the kingdom so that the people would know the law of the Lord and live according to it.

Neh 8:7-8 The Levites instructed the people in the Law…
2Ch 15:3 For many years Israel has been without the true God…

accompanied by certain Levites—Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tob-adonijah—

These Levites joined the royal officials in carrying the Book of the Law throughout Judah. Set apart for service connected with worship and instruction, they helped make God’s commands known among the people. Their participation shows that Jehoshaphat’s reform was organized and extended beyond Jerusalem into the cities of the kingdom.

2Ch 19:8-10 Moreover, Jehoshaphat appointed in Jerusalem…
2Ch 35:3 To the Levites who taught all Israel and were holy…
Deu 33:10 He will teach Your ordinances to Jacob and Your law…

along with the priests Elishama and Jehoram.

The priests brought their authority as ministers of the sanctuary and teachers of God’s requirements for worship, sacrifice, and holiness. Together with the Levites and civil leaders, they ensured that the people received clear instruction in the Law and understood their covenant responsibilities.

Deu 17:9-11 You are to go to the Levitical priests and to the judge…
Lev 10:11 so that you may teach the Israelites…
Mal 2:7 For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge…

They taught throughout Judah,

Jehoshaphat sent princes, Levites, and priests across the kingdom to instruct the people in God’s law. His reform addressed the spiritual neglect that had contributed to Judah’s earlier unfaithfulness.

Neh 8:7-8 The Levites instructed the people in the Law…
Deu 31:12-13 Assemble the people—men, women, children…
Ezr 7:10 For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD,…

taking with them the Book of the Law of the LORD.

Their instruction rested on the written law given through Moses. By bringing the Book of the Law, they taught God’s covenant requirements rather than personal opinions or local customs.

Deu 31:26 Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark…
2Ch 34:14-15 While they were bringing out the money that had been taken…
2Ki 22:8-10 Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe,…

They went throughout the towns of Judah

The mission reached communities throughout the kingdom, not merely Jerusalem or the larger cities. Jehoshaphat sought to establish knowledge of the law among all his people.

Mat 9:35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages,…
Luk 13:22 Then Jesus traveled throughout the towns and villages,…
Mrk 6:6 And He was amazed at their unbelief. And He went around…

and taught the people.

The teachers explained God’s commands so that the people could understand their responsibilities before Him. This work strengthened Judah’s devotion to the LORD and supported the reforms of Jehoshaphat’s reign, reflecting the role of a rabbi, or teacher.

Ezr 7:25-26 And you, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God,…
2Ch 34:30-31 And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people…
Jos 8:34-35 Afterward, Joshua read aloud all the words of the law—…

And the dread of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that surrounded Judah,

God restrained Judah’s neighboring nations by causing them to recognize His power and favor upon Jehoshaphat’s kingdom. Nations such as Moab, Ammon, Edom, and Philistia had often threatened Judah, yet the fear God placed upon them prevented aggression. Judah’s security rested not merely on military strength but on the Lord’s protection over a king and people seeking to follow Him.

2Ch 20:29 And the fear of God came upon all the kingdoms of the lands…
Gen 35:5 As they set out, a terror from God fell…
Deu 11:25 No man will be able to stand against you;…

so that they did not make war against Jehoshaphat.

Jehoshaphat’s commitment to remove idolatry, strengthen the worship of the Lord, and teach God’s law was followed by a season of stability. The absence of war allowed Judah to grow stronger spiritually and materially. God’s preservation of the kingdom showed that He was able to give peace to His people when surrounding powers might otherwise have brought conflict.

2Ch 20:30 Then Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was at peace, for his God…
2Ch 14:6-7 Because the land was at peace, Asa built fortified cities…
1Ki 5:4 But now the LORD my God has given me rest…

Some Philistines also brought gifts and silver as tribute to Jehoshaphat,

Israel’s former enemies recognized the strength of Judah under Jehoshaphat. Their tribute reflected both political submission and the security God granted to a king who sought to lead the nation according to His law. Judah’s growing influence brought peace, wealth, and stability to the surrounding region.

1Ki 10:25 Year after year, each visitor would bring his tribute:…
Psa 72:10-11 May the kings of Tarshish and distant shores bring tribute;…

and the Arabs brought him 7,700 rams and 7,700 goats from their flocks.

Arabian tribes contributed from the chief wealth of their pastoral economy. The large, equal numbers of rams and goats show the extent of Jehoshaphat’s authority beyond Judah’s borders and the prosperity that marked his reign.

Ezk 27:21 Arabia and all the princes of Kedar were your customers,…
2Ki 3:4 Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep breeder…

Jehoshaphat grew stronger and stronger,

Jehoshaphat grew stronger and stronger as the Lord established his kingdom. His devotion to the Lord, removal of idolatrous worship, and instruction of the people in God’s law strengthened Judah spiritually and politically.

2Ch 26:8 The Ammonites brought tribute to Uzziah,…
2Ch 26:15 And in Jerusalem he made skillfully designed devices…

2Ch 11:5 Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and he built up cities…
2Ch 14:6 Because the land was at peace, Asa built fortified cities…

and store cities in Judah

Jehoshaphat established storage cities throughout Judah to stockpile provisions and military supplies, helping the kingdom endure war, famine, or siege.

2Ch 8:6 as well as Baalath, all the store cities…
2Ch 8:4 He built Tadmor in the wilderness, in addition…
1Ki 9:19 as well as all the store cities…

and kept vast supplies in the cities of Judah.

Gen 41:48-49 During those seven years, Joseph collected the excess food…
2Ch 32:28-29 He also made storehouses for the harvest of grain…

He also had warriors in Jerusalem
