1 The Festival of Unleavened Bread, called Passover, was near. Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,
2 The chief priests and the scribes were looking for some way to kill Jesus. However, they were afraid of the people. 12 He will take you upstairs and show you a large furnished room. Get things ready there.| And he will show you a large upper room furnished; prepare it there.” He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”
13 The disciples left. They found everything as Jesus had told them and prepared the Passover. And they went and found it just as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.
14 When it was time to eat the Passover meal, Jesus and the apostles were at the table. And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table.
15 Jesus said to them, |I've had a deep desire to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.

18 I can guarantee that from now on I won't drink this wine until the kingdom of God comes.| For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19 Then Jesus took bread and spoke a prayer of thanksgiving. He broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, |This is my body, which is given up for you. Do this to remember me.| And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”
20 When supper was over, he did the same with the cup. He said, |This cup that is poured out for you is the new promise made with my blood.| And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood. 21 |The hand of the one who will betray me is with me on the table. But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.
22 The Son of Man is going to die the way it has been planned for him. But how horrible it will be for that person who betrays him.| For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” The Son of Man will go as it has been decreed. But woe to that man who betrays him!”
23 So they began to discuss with each other who could do such a thing. And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this. They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
24 Then a quarrel broke out among the disciples. They argued about who should be considered the greatest. A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.
25 Jesus said to them, |The kings of nations have power over their people, and those in authority call themselves friends of the people. And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But you're not going to be that way! Rather, the greatest among you must be like the youngest, and your leader must be like a servant. But not so with you. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.
27 Who's the greatest, the person who sits at the table or the servant? Isn't it really the person who sits at the table? But I'm among you as a servant. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
28 |You have stood by me in the troubles that have tested me. “You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, You are those who have stood by me in my trials.
29 So as my Father has given me a kingdom, I'm giving it to you. and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me,
30 You will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. 31 [Then the Lord said,] |Simon, Simon, listen! Satan has demanded to have you apostles for himself. 33 But Peter said to him, |Lord, I'm ready to go to prison with you and to die with you.| Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”
34 Jesus replied, |Peter, I can guarantee that the rooster won't crow tonight until you say three times that you don't know me.| Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.” Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
35 Then Jesus said to them, |When I sent you out without a wallet, traveling bag, or sandals, you didn't lack anything, did you?| |Not a thing!| they answered. And he said to them, “When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?” “Nothing,” they answered.
36 Then he said to them, |But now, the person who has a wallet and a traveling bag should take them along. The person who doesn't have a sword should sell his coat and buy one. He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
37 I can guarantee that the Scripture passage which says, 'He was counted with criminals,' must find its fulfillment in me. Indeed, whatever is written about me will come true.| For I tell you that this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For what is written about me has its fulfillment.” It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”
38 The disciples said, |Lord, look! Here are two swords!| Then Jesus said to them, |That's enough!| And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two swords.” And he said to them, “It is enough.” The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.” “That’s enough!” he replied.
39 Jesus went out [of the city] to the Mount of Olives as he usually did. His disciples followed him. And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him.
40 When he arrived, he said to them, |Pray that you won't be tempted.| And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”
41 Then he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, knelt down, and prayed, And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed,
42 |Father, if it is your will, take this cup [of suffering] away from me. However, your will must be done, not mine.| saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
43 Then an angel from heaven appeared to him and gave him strength. And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.
44 So he prayed very hard in anguish. His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 When Jesus ended his prayer, he got up and went to the disciples. He found them asleep and overcome with sadness. 46 He said to them, |Why are you sleeping? Get up, and pray that you won't be tempted.| and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.” “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”
47 While he was still speaking to the disciples, a crowd arrived. The man called Judas, one of the twelve apostles, was leading them. He came close to Jesus to kiss him. While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him,
48 Jesus said to him, |Judas, do you intend to betray the Son of Man with a kiss?| but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 The men who were with Jesus saw what was going to happen. So they asked him, |Lord, should we use our swords to fight?| And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”
50 One of the disciples cut off the right ear of the chief priest's servant. And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51 But Jesus said, |Stop! That's enough of this.| Then he touched the servant's ear and healed him. But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple guards, and leaders who had come for him, |Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal? Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs?
53 I was with you in the temple courtyard every day and you didn't try to arrest me. But this is your time, when darkness rules.| When I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.” Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.”
54 So they arrested Jesus and led him away to the chief priest's house. Peter followed at a distance. Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest’s house, and Peter was following at a distance. Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.
55 Some men had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard. As they sat together, Peter sat among them. 56 A female servant saw him as he sat facing the glow of the fire. 58 A little later someone else saw Peter and said, |You are one of them.| But Peter said, |Not me!| And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” “Man, I am not!” Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another person insisted, |It's obvious that this man was with him. He's a Galilean!| And after an interval of about an hour still another insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”
60 But Peter said, |I don't know what you're talking about!| Just then, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed.
61 Then the Lord turned and looked directly at Peter. Peter remembered what the Lord had said: |Before a rooster crows today, you will say three times that you don't know me.| And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times.” The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”
62 Then Peter went outside and cried bitterly. And he went out and wept bitterly. And he went outside and wept bitterly.
63 The men who were guarding Jesus made fun of him as they beat him. Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking him as they beat him. The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him.
64 They blindfolded him and said to him, |Tell us who hit you.| They also blindfolded him and kept asking him, “Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?” They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?”
65 They also insulted him in many other ways. And they said many other things against him, blaspheming him. And they said many other insulting things to him.
66 In the morning the council of the people's leaders, the chief priests and the scribes, gathered together. They brought Jesus in front of their highest court and asked him, When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said, At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them.
67 |Tell us, are you the Messiah?| Jesus said to them, |If I tell you, you won't believe me. “If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe, “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me,
68 And if I ask you, you won't answer. and if I ask you, you will not answer. and if I asked you, you would not answer.
69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be in the highest position in heaven.| But from now on the Son of Man shall be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”
70 Then all of them said, |So you're the Son of God?| Jesus answered them, |You're right to say that I am.| So they all said, “Are you the Son of God, then?” And he said to them, “You say that I am.” They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied, “You say that I am.”
71 Then they said, |Why do we need any more testimony? We've heard him say it ourselves.| Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips.” Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”
