Asa Reigns in Judah

Then Abijah rested with his fathers

Abijah died after a brief reign over Judah marked by war with Jeroboam and Israel. His victory over Israel showed the Lord’s faithfulness to the Davidic kingdom despite Abijah’s shortcomings.

1Ki 15:8 And Abijam rested with his fathers and was buried…
2Ch 12:16 And Rehoboam rested with his fathers and was buried…
1Ki 2:10 Then David rested with his fathers and was buried…

and was buried in the City of David.

He was laid to rest in Jerusalem among the kings descended from David, honoring his place in the royal line established by God.

1Ki 14:31 And Rehoboam rested with his fathers and was buried…
2Ch 16:14 He was buried in the tomb that he had cut out for himself…
1Ki 11:43 And Solomon rested with his fathers and was buried…

And his son Asa reigned in his place,

Asa succeeded his father as king of Judah. Unlike Abijah, Asa would lead the nation in removing idolatry and restoring proper worship of the Lord.

and in his days the land was at peace for ten years.

God granted Judah a period without war at the beginning of Asa’s reign, giving the king opportunity to strengthen the nation and carry out his reforms.

2Ch 20:30 Then Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was at peace, for his God…

And Asa did what was good and right

Asa, Judah’s third king after the division of the kingdom, began his reign with a determined effort to restore faithful worship. He removed foreign altars and idols, called Judah to seek the LORD, and strengthened the nation during a time of peace.

1Ki 15:11 And Asa did what was right in the eyes of the LORD…
1Ki 22:43 And Jehoshaphat walked in all the ways of his father Asa;…
2Ki 18:3 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD,…

in the eyes of the LORD

Asa’s conduct was measured by God’s revealed standard rather than by political success or popular opinion. His reforms opposed the idolatry that had weakened Judah under earlier rulers and directed the people back to the worship commanded by God.

1Ki 15:5 For David had done what was right in the eyes of the LORD…
2Ki 22:2 And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD…
2Ki 23:25 Neither before nor after Josiah was there any king…

his God.

Asa recognized the LORD as his own covenant God and depended on Him when Judah faced danger. Though Asa later showed failures, the opening assessment of his reign highlights his sincere devotion and his leadership in turning Judah toward the LORD.

2Ch 31:20 So this is what Hezekiah did throughout Judah.…
2Ch 27:6 So Jotham grew powerful because he ordered his ways…
Dan 6:23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel…

He removed the foreign altars

Asa began his reign by purging Judah of worship sites devoted to false gods, reversing the influence of Canaanite religion and foreign customs.

Deu 7:5 Instead, this is what you are to do to them:…
2Ki 23:12 He pulled down the altars that the kings of Judah…

and high places,

These elevated shrines had become centers of unauthorized and often idolatrous worship throughout the land. Their removal supported worship of the LORD according to His covenant commands.

2Ki 23:8 Then Josiah brought all the priests from the cities of Judah…
2Ch 31:1 When all this had ended, the Israelites in attendance…

shattered the sacred pillars,

The stone pillars connected with pagan worship were destroyed rather than adapted for Israel’s use, marking a clear rejection of Baal-related practices.

Exo 34:13 Rather, you must tear down their altars,…
1Ki 14:23 They also built for themselves high places, sacred pillars,…
2Ki 17:10 They set up for themselves sacred pillars…

and chopped down the Asherah poles.

Asa also cut down the wooden symbols of Asherah, removing objects associated with fertility cults and reinforcing Judah’s obligation to worship the LORD alone.

Deu 16:21 Do not set up any wooden Asherah pole next to the altar…
Jdg 6:25-26 On that very night the LORD said to Gideon,…
2Ki 23:14 He smashed the sacred pillars to pieces,…

He commanded the people of Judah

King Asa used his authority to lead Judah in religious reform after removing idolatrous practices from the land. As ruler of the southern kingdom, he called the nation to public faithfulness to the God of Israel.

Asa directed the people to return to wholehearted dependence on the Lord rather than the gods and customs of the surrounding nations.

2Ch 15:2 So he went out to meet Asa and said to him,…

the God of their fathers,

Judah’s worship was rooted in the covenant God made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and later confirmed through Moses. Asa called the people back to the faith of their ancestors.

2Ch 20:6 O LORD, God of our fathers, are You not the God who is…
1Ch 29:18 O LORD, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Israel,…
Exo 3:15 God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites,…

and to observe the law and the commandments.

Their return to the Lord required obedience to the law He had given through Moses, governing both worship and daily life.

Jos 22:5 But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law…
Deu 5:32-33 So be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you;…
1Ki 2:3 And keep the charge of the LORD your God to walk in His ways…

He also removed the high places and incense altars

Asa acted against the local shrines and altars where unauthorized worship and idolatry had taken root. His reforms sought to turn Judah from divided religious practices to worship of the Lord according to His commands.

2Ch 17:6 And his heart took delight in the ways of the LORD;…
Deu 12:2-3 Destroy completely all the places where the nations…

from all the cities of Judah,

The campaign extended throughout the kingdom rather than being limited to Jerusalem or a few major centers. Idolatry had spread widely, and Asa addressed it as a national problem requiring a thorough response.

2Ch 34:3-7 In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young,…
2Ki 18:4 He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars…

and under him the kingdom was at peace.

God granted Judah security during this period of obedience. With enemies restrained and the land settled, Asa was able to strengthen the nation and continue his reforms.

2Ch 20:30 Then Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was at peace, for his God…
2Ch 15:15 And all Judah rejoiced over the oath, for they had sworn…
Pro 16:7 When a man’s ways please the LORD, He makes…

Because the land was at peace,

Judah enjoyed a period of security during Asa’s early reign. Having removed idolatrous worship and called the nation to seek the LORD, Asa used this stability to strengthen the kingdom.

Jos 11:23 So Joshua took the entire land, as the LORD had spoken…
2Ch 20:30 Then Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was at peace, for his God…

Asa built fortified cities in Judah.

He improved Judah’s defenses by building and reinforcing walled cities, preparing the nation against future invasion while resources and labor were available.

2Ch 11:5-12 Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and he built up cities…
2Ch 17:12-13 Jehoshaphat grew stronger and stronger, and he built…

In those days no one made war with him,

Judah faced no immediate military threat, allowing its towns, economy, and defenses to develop without interruption.

2Ch 17:10 And the dread of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms…
1Ki 5:4 But now the LORD my God has given me rest…

because the LORD had given him rest.

The peace of Asa’s reign came from God’s favor and protection. It was a covenant blessing granted while Judah followed the LORD.

2Sa 7:1 After the king had settled into his palace,…
Jos 21:44 And the LORD gave them rest on every side,…

So he said to the people of Judah,

King Asa called Judah to unite in strengthening the kingdom during a season of peace. Having removed many idolatrous practices and directed the nation back to the LORD, he used this period of stability to prepare for future threats.

2Ch 20:15 And he said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!…
2Ch 20:20 Early in the morning they got up and left for…

“Let us build these cities and surround them with walls and towers, with doors and bars.

Asa urged the people to fortify Judah’s towns with strong defenses, including walls for protection, towers for watchmen, and secured gates to control entry. Such construction required national cooperation and showed wise preparation rather than complacency.

2Ch 11:5-12 Rehoboam lived in Jerusalem, and he built up cities…
2Ch 32:5 Then Hezekiah worked resolutely to rebuild all…
2Ch 26:9-10 Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate,…

The land is still ours because we have sought the LORD our God.

Asa recognized that Judah’s security and continued possession of the land depended on the LORD’s favor. The peace they enjoyed was not credited merely to military strength or political circumstances, but to their renewed devotion to God.

2Ch 15:2 So he went out to meet Asa and said to him,…
Deu 4:29-31 But if from there you will seek the LORD your God,…
1Ch 22:19 Now set your heart and soul to seek the LORD your God.…

We have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.”

The LORD had restrained Judah’s enemies and granted peace throughout the kingdom. This freedom from war gave Asa the opportunity to strengthen the cities and establish greater security.

2Ch 15:15 And all Judah rejoiced over the oath, for they had sworn…
1Ki 5:4 But now the LORD my God has given me rest…
Jos 21:44 And the LORD gave them rest on every side,…

So they built and prospered.

Judah responded to Asa’s leadership, completed the defensive work, and enjoyed growth and stability under God’s blessing.

Ezr 6:14 So the Jewish elders built and prospered.…
2Ch 31:21 He acted with all his heart in every work that he began…
2Ch 26:5 He sought God throughout the days of Zechariah…

Asa had an army of 300,000 men from Judah bearing large shields and spears,

Judah supplied heavily armed infantry prepared to hold ground and engage the enemy at close range. Their strength reflected the order and security established during Asa’s early reign, when he removed idolatry and fortified the cities of Judah.

2Ch 25:5 Then Amaziah gathered the people of Judah…
1Ch 12:24 From Judah: 6,800 armed troops bearing shields and spears.

and 280,000 men from Benjamin bearing small shields and drawing the bow.

Benjamin, joined to Judah after the division of the kingdom, provided mobile troops skilled in ranged combat. Together, the two tribes formed a balanced force capable of defending the southern kingdom against invasion.

2Ch 17:17 From Benjamin: Eliada, a mighty man of valor,…
1Ch 12:2 they were archers using both the right and left hands…

All these were mighty men of valor.

These soldiers were proven, courageous men able to serve faithfully in battle. Their presence gave Judah strength during a period when the nation sought the Lord and enjoyed peace.

1Ch 12:21 They helped David against the raiders, for they were all…
Jdg 6:12 And the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon and said,…

Then Zerah the Cushite came against them

Zerah led a Cushite force against Judah during Asa’s reign. Cush lay south of Egypt in the region of Nubia, and its warriors were known throughout the ancient world. The invasion interrupted Judah’s period of reform and security under Asa.

2Ch 16:8 Were not the Cushites and Libyans a vast army…
2Ch 12:3 with 1,200 chariots, 60,000 horsemen,…
2Ki 19:9 Now Sennacherib had been warned about Tirhakah king of Cush:…

with an army of 1,000,000 men and 300 chariots,

The invading force greatly outnumbered Judah’s army and included chariots, a major military advantage on the open terrain of the lowlands. The scale of the threat made Judah’s defense appear impossible by ordinary means.

2Ch 13:3 Abijah went into battle with an army of 400,000 chosen…
1Sa 13:5 Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel…
1Ki 20:1 Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army.…

and they advanced as far as Mareshah.

Mareshah stood in the Shephelah, southwest of Jerusalem, near routes linking the coastal plain with Judah’s hill country. Zerah’s advance to this city brought the enemy deep into Judahite territory and placed the kingdom in immediate danger.

2Ch 11:8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,
Jos 15:44 Keilah, Achzib, and Mareshah—nine cities…
Mic 1:15 I will again bring a conqueror against you,…

So Asa marched out against him

Asa met Zerah’s invasion with resolve, leading Judah’s forces rather than yielding ground to the Cushite army. His earlier removal of idolatry had prepared the nation to seek the Lord in a time of national danger.

2Ch 16:8 Were not the Cushites and Libyans a vast army…
2Ch 25:21 So Jehoash king of Israel advanced, and he and Amaziah…
2Ch 20:21 Then Jehoshaphat consulted with the people…

and lined up in battle formation

Judah’s army was arranged for an ordered defense, showing disciplined preparation in the face of a much larger force. Asa did not depend merely on military strength but acted responsibly while looking to God for deliverance.

2Ch 13:3 Abijah went into battle with an army of 400,000 chosen…
1Ch 19:10 When Joab saw the battle lines before him and behind him…
1Sa 4:2 The Philistines arrayed themselves against Israel,…

in the Valley of Zephathah

The battle took place in a valley suited to the movement and deployment of large armies. Its location allowed Asa to confront the invaders before they could advance farther into Judah.

1Sa 17:2 Saul and the men of Israel assembled and camped…
2Sa 5:18 Now the Philistines had come and spread out…
2Ch 20:16 Tomorrow you are to march down against them.…

near Mareshah.

Mareshah stood in Judah’s Shephelah, a strategically important region between the hill country and the coastal plain. Defending this area protected Judah’s territory and its access to the approaches leading into the heartland.

1Ch 4:21 The sons of Shelah son of Judah: Er the father of Lecah,…
2Ch 11:8 Gath, Mareshah, Ziph,
Jos 15:44 Keilah, Achzib, and Mareshah—nine cities…

Then Asa cried out to the LORD his God:

Facing a vastly larger Ethiopian force, Asa turned first to the LORD rather than trusting Judah’s army or military position. His prayer shows the king’s personal dependence on the God of the covenant.

Psa 18:6 In my distress I called upon the LORD; I cried…
Psa 34:17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears;…
Psa 50:15 “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you”…

“O LORD, there is no one besides You to help the powerless against the mighty.

Asa recognized that the outcome did not rest on numbers or strength. God alone could deliver Judah from an enemy beyond its natural ability to defeat.

2Ch 32:8 With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD…
Exo 14:14 The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
1Sa 14:6 Jonathan said to the young man bearing his armor, “Come…

Help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on You,

Asa asked for help on the basis of Judah’s trust in the LORD. The nation’s safety depended upon God’s protection, not human resources.

2Ch 20:12 Our God, will You not judge them? We are powerless…
1Ch 5:20 And because they cried out to God in battle…
Psa 33:20-22 Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and our shield.…

and in Your name we have come against this multitude.

Judah entered the battle as the people belonging to the LORD, seeking to uphold His honor before the surrounding nations.

1Sa 17:45 But David said to the Philistine, “You come against me…
Psa 20:7 Some trust in chariots and others in horses…
Psa 118:10-12 All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the LORD…

O LORD, You are our God.

Asa reaffirmed the covenant relationship between the LORD and Judah. Though the enemy was powerful, Judah belonged to the true God.

Psa 95:7 For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture…
Jos 24:18 And the LORD drove out before us all the nations…
Deu 4:39 Know therefore this day and take to heart…

Do not let a mere mortal prevail against You.”

Victory for the Ethiopians would appear to challenge the God whom Judah trusted. Asa appealed for the LORD to show that no human army can overcome His purpose.

Psa 9:19-20 Rise up, O LORD, do not let man prevail;…
1Sa 2:9 He guards the steps of His faithful ones…
Psa 56:11 in God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

So the LORD struck down the Cushites

God gave Judah victory over Zerah’s invading army, demonstrating that the outcome did not rest on Judah’s military strength. The Cushites came from the region south of Egypt and posed a serious threat, but the LORD defended Judah as Asa had sought His help.

1Sa 7:10 As the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel,…
Exo 15:6 Your right hand, O LORD, is majestic in power;…
2Ch 20:22 The moment they began their shouts and praises, the LORD…

before Asa and Judah,

Asa’s reforms had called Judah back to the worship of the LORD, and the victory confirmed God’s faithfulness to the king and the nation. Judah’s security depended on the LORD rather than its own resources.

2Ch 13:15 and the men of Judah raised the battle cry.…
Deu 31:8 The LORD Himself goes before you; He will be with you.…
Jos 10:10-11 And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel,…

and the Cushites fled.

Their retreat became a decisive rout as Judah pursued them. The invasion ended in defeat, showing that armies opposing God’s purposes could not prevail.

Exo 14:27-28 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,…
Jdg 4:15-16 And in front of him the LORD routed with the sword Sisera,…
1Sa 17:51-52 David ran and stood over him. He grabbed the Philistine’s sword…

Then Asa and his army pursued them as far as Gerar.

Asa led Judah’s forces in pursuit of the defeated Cushite army beyond Judah’s southern border to Gerar, a Philistine city in the Negev. The distance of the pursuit shows that the enemy’s retreat became a rout and that Judah was delivered from a serious threat.

Gen 14:15 During the night, Abram divided his forces…
1Sa 17:52 Then the men of Israel and Judah charged forward…
Jdg 8:4 Then Gideon and his three hundred men…

The Cushites fell and could not recover,

The Cushite force, which had entered Judah with overwhelming numbers, was so thoroughly defeated that it could not regroup or renew the attack. Their collapse demonstrates that Judah’s victory did not rest on its military strength but on the LORD’s response to Asa’s dependence on Him.

Psa 18:38 I crushed them so they could not rise; they have fallen…
2Sa 22:39 I devoured and crushed them so they could not rise;…
Psa 36:12 There the evildoers lie fallen, thrown down…

for they were crushed before the LORD and His army.

The destruction of the invading army was the work of the LORD, who fought for Judah. Asa and his men participated in the battle, but the outcome belonged to God, who had heard Asa’s prayer and preserved His people.

2Ki 19:35 And that very night the angel of the LORD went out…
Jos 10:14 There has been no day like it before or since,…
1Sa 7:10 As the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel,…

So the people of Judah carried off a great amount of plunder

The defeated army left behind substantial wealth, supplies, and livestock. The plunder provided material benefit to Judah and confirmed the completeness of its victory.

2Ch 20:25 Then Jehoshaphat and his people went to carry off…
2Ki 7:16 Then the people went out and plundered the camp……
Exo 12:36 And the LORD gave the people such favor…

and attacked all the cities around Gerar,

After defeating the Cushite army, Asa pursued the fleeing forces toward Gerar and struck the surrounding towns. This secured Judah’s southern and western approaches and removed communities that could have supported future attacks.

2Ch 28:18 The Philistines had also raided the cities…
2Ki 18:8 He defeated the Philistines as far as Gaza and its borders,…
1Sa 27:8-9 Now David and his men went up and raided…

because the terror of the LORD had fallen upon them.

God caused fear to seize the inhabitants, leaving them unable to resist Judah’s army. Asa’s victory was not merely the result of military strength but of the Lord’s intervention on behalf of Judah.

Gen 35:5 As they set out, a terror from God fell…
2Ch 17:10 And the dread of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms…
Exo 15:15-16 Then the chiefs of Edom will be dismayed;…

They plundered all the cities,

Asa’s forces took the goods, livestock, and supplies of the defeated towns around Gerar. Such spoils weakened the hostile cities while strengthening Judah after the campaign.

Jos 11:14 The Israelites took all the plunder and livestock…
2Ch 25:13 Meanwhile the troops that Amaziah had dismissed from battle…

since there was much plunder there.

The region around Gerar possessed considerable wealth, and the spoil provided resources for Asa’s kingdom. The victory demonstrated the Lord’s protection and provision after Judah sought His help.

2Ch 20:25 Then Jehoshaphat and his people went to carry off…
1Sa 30:20 And he took all the flocks and herds, which his men…
2Ki 7:16 Then the people went out and plundered the camp……

They also attacked the tents of the herdsmen

Asa’s forces pursued the defeated Cushite army into the surrounding region, striking the camps of those who kept livestock. These vulnerable encampments held resources connected with the invading force and its allies.

Jdg 6:5 For the Midianites came with their livestock and their tents…
1Ch 5:10 During the days of Saul they waged war…
Num 31:7-11 Then they waged war against Midian, as the LORD had…

and carried off many sheep and camels.

The capture of livestock showed the completeness of Judah’s victory. Sheep supplied food and wool, while camels were especially valuable for travel and commerce across the southern and desert regions.

1Ch 5:21 They seized the livestock of the Hagrites…
Job 1:14-17 While the oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing…
1Sa 30:18-20 So David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken,…

Then they returned to Jerusalem.

Having secured the victory and gathered the spoil, Asa’s army returned safely to Judah’s capital. Their return confirmed that the Lord had delivered His people and preserved Jerusalem from the threat.

2Ch 20:27-28 Then all the men of Judah and Jerusalem,…
2Sa 20:22 Then the woman went to all the people with her wise counsel,…
