Isaiah 3

Judgment on Jerusalem and Judah

1  כִּי֩ (For) הִנֵּ֨ה (behold), הָאָד֜וֹן (the Lord) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֗וֹת (hosts)

מֵסִ֤יר (is turning away)

מִירוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ (from Jerusalem) וּמִ֣יהוּדָ֔ה (and from Judah)

מַשְׁעֵ֖ן (the staff) וּמַשְׁעֵנָ֑ה (and support),

כֹּ֚ל (the whole) מִשְׁעַן־ (staff) לֶ֔חֶם (of bread), וְכֹ֖ל (and the whole) מִשְׁעַן־ (staff) מָֽיִם׃ (of water),

2  גִּבּ֖וֹר (the mighty one) וְאִ֣ישׁ (and the man) מִלְחָמָ֑ה (of war),

שׁוֹפֵ֥ט (the judge) וְנָבִ֖יא (and the prophet),

וְקֹסֵ֥ם (and the diviner) וְזָקֵֽן׃ (and the elder),

3  שַׂר־ (the captain) חֲמִשִּׁ֖ים (of fifty), וּנְשׂ֣וּא (and the lifted up) פָנִ֑ים (face),

וְיוֹעֵ֛ץ (and the counselor), וַחֲכַ֥ם (and the cunning) חֲרָשִׁ֖ים (magician), וּנְב֥וֹן (and the discerning) לָֽחַשׁ׃ (charmer).

4  וְנָתַתִּ֥י (And I will give) נְעָרִ֖ים (youths) שָׂרֵיהֶ֑ם (as their princes),

וְתַעֲלוּלִ֖ים (and infants) יִמְשְׁלוּ־ (will rule) בָֽם׃ (over them).

5  וְנִגַּ֣שׂ (And will be oppressed) הָעָ֔ם (the people),

אִ֥ישׁ (each man) בְּאִ֖ישׁ (by a man) וְאִ֣ישׁ (and each man) בְּרֵעֵ֑הוּ (by his neighbor);

יִרְהֲב֗וּ (will rage) הַנַּ֙עַר֙ (the child) בַּזָּקֵ֔ן (against the elder),

וְהַנִּקְלֶ֖ה (and the one despised) בַּנִּכְבָּֽד׃ (against the honored).

6  כִּֽי־ (For) יִתְפֹּ֨שׂ (will take hold) אִ֤ישׁ (a man) בְּאָחִיו֙ (on his brother)

בֵּ֣ית (in the house) אָבִ֔יו (of his father):

שִׂמְלָ֣ה (A cloak) לְכָ֔ה (is unto you)— קָצִ֖ין (the chief) תִּֽהְיֶה־ (you will be) לָּ֑נוּ (for us),

וְהַמַּכְשֵׁלָ֥ה (and the heap of ruins) הַזֹּ֖את (this) תַּ֥חַת (is under) יָדֶֽךָ׃ (your hand),

7  יִשָּׂא֩ (he will lift up) בַיּ֨וֹם (in the day) הַה֤וּא׀ (that), לֵאמֹר֙ (to say),

לֹא־ (Not) אֶהְיֶ֣ה (will I be) חֹבֵ֔שׁ (one binding wounds),

וּבְבֵיתִ֕י (and in my house) אֵ֥ין (there is no) לֶ֖חֶם (bread) וְאֵ֣ין (and no) שִׂמְלָ֑ה (garment);

לֹ֥א (not) תְשִׂימֻ֖נִי (shall you⁺ set me as) קְצִ֥ין (chief) עָֽם׃ (of the people).

8  כִּ֤י (For) כָשְׁלָה֙ (has stumbled) יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם (Jerusalem),

וִיהוּדָ֖ה (and Judah) נָפָ֑ל (has fallen),

כִּֽי־ (because) לְשׁוֹנָ֤ם (their tongue) וּמַֽעַלְלֵיהֶם֙ (and their deeds) אֶל־ (are against) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH),

לַמְר֖וֹת (defying) עֵנֵ֥י (the eyes) כְבוֹדֽוֹ׃ (of His glory).

9  הַכָּרַ֤ת (The look) פְּנֵיהֶם֙ (of their faces) עָ֣נְתָה (answers) בָּ֔ם (against them)

וְחַטָּאתָ֛ם (and their sin) כִּסְדֹ֥ם (like Sodom) הִגִּ֖ידוּ (they declare);

לֹ֣א (not) כִחֵ֑דוּ (they do hide it).

א֣וֹי (Woe) לְנַפְשָׁ֔ם (to their soul)!

כִּֽי־ (For) גָמְל֥וּ (they have brought) לָהֶ֖ם (upon themselves) רָעָֽה׃ (evil).

10  אִמְר֥וּ (Say) צַדִּ֖יק (to the righteous) כִּי־ (that) ט֑וֹב (it is good),

כִּֽי־ (for) פְרִ֥י (the fruit) מַעַלְלֵיהֶ֖ם (of their deeds) יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃ (they will eat).

11  א֖וֹי (Woe) לְרָשָׁ֣ע (to the wicked)— רָ֑ע (evil)!

כִּֽי־ (For) גְמ֥וּל (the recompense) יָדָ֖יו (of his hands) יֵעָ֥שֶׂה (will be done) לּֽוֹ׃ (to him).

12  עַמִּי֙ (My people), נֹגְשָׂ֣יו (their oppressors are) מְעוֹלֵ֔ל (foolish children),

וְנָשִׁ֖ים (and women) מָ֣שְׁלוּ (rule) ב֑וֹ (over them).

עַמִּי֙ (O My people), מְאַשְּׁרֶ֣יךָ (those who guide you) מַתְעִ֔ים (lead you astray),

וְדֶ֥רֶךְ (and the way) אֹֽרְחֹתֶ֖יךָ (of your paths) בִּלֵּֽעוּ׃ס (they have swallowed up).

13  נִצָּ֥ב (Is taking His stand) לָרִ֖יב (to contend) יְהוָ֑ה (YHWH),

וְעֹמֵ֖ד (and is standing) לָדִ֥ין (to judge) עַמִּֽים׃ (the peoples).

14  יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) בְּמִשְׁפָּ֣ט (into judgment) יָב֔וֹא (will enter)

עִם־ (with) זִקְנֵ֥י (the elders) עַמּ֖וֹ (of His people) וְשָׂרָ֑יו (and His princes):

וְאַתֶּם֙ (And you⁺) בִּֽעַרְתֶּ֣ם (you⁺ have consumed) הַכֶּ֔רֶם (the vineyard);

גְּזֵלַ֥ת (the plunder) הֶֽעָנִ֖י (of the poor) בְּבָתֵּיכֶֽם׃ (is in your⁺ houses).

15  מַלָּכֶם (Why do you)— תְּדַכְּא֣וּ (crush) עַמִּ֔י (My people)?

וּפְנֵ֥י (And the faces) עֲנִיִּ֖ים (of the poor) תִּטְחָ֑נוּ (grind).

נְאֻם־ (A declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֖ה (YHWH of) צְבָאֽוֹת׃ס (hosts).

A Warning to the Daughters of Zion

16  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (And says) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH):

יַ֚עַן (Because) כִּ֤י (that) גָֽבְהוּ֙ (are haughty) בְּנ֣וֹת (the daughters) צִיּ֔וֹן (of Zion)

וַתֵּלַ֙כְנָה֙ (and they walk) נְטוּוֹת (with outstretched) גָּר֔וֹן (neck)

וּֽמְשַׂקְּר֖וֹת (and wanton) עֵינָ֑יִם (eyes),

הָל֤וֹךְ (walking) וְטָפֹף֙ (and skipping) תֵּלַ֔כְנָה (as they go),

וּבְרַגְלֵיהֶ֖ם (and with their feet) תְּעַכַּֽסְנָה׃ (jingling).

17  וְשִׂפַּ֣ח (And will bring scabs) אֲדֹנָ֔י (the Lord)

קָדְקֹ֖ד (to the crown of the head) בְּנ֣וֹת (of the daughters) צִיּ֑וֹן (of Zion),

וַיהוָ֖ה (and YHWH) פָּתְהֵ֥ן (their foreheads) יְעָרֶֽה׃ס (will make bare).

18  בַּיּ֨וֹם (In the day) הַה֜וּא (that) יָסִ֣יר (will turn away) אֲדֹנָ֗י (the Lord) אֵ֣ת (-)

תִּפְאֶ֧רֶת (the beauty) הָעֲכָסִ֛ים (of the anklets) וְהַשְּׁבִיסִ֖ים (and the headbands), וְהַשַּׂהֲרֹנִֽים׃ (and the crescents).

19  הַנְּטִיפ֥וֹת (The pendants), וְהַשֵּׁיר֖וֹת (and the bracelets), וְהָֽרְעָלֽוֹת׃ (and the veils),

20  הַפְּאֵרִ֤ים (the headdresses), וְהַצְּעָדוֹת֙ (and the armlets), וְהַקִּשֻּׁרִ֔ים (and the sashes),

וּבָתֵּ֥י (and the boxes of) הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ (perfume), וְהַלְּחָשִֽׁים׃ (and the charms),

21  הַטַּבָּע֖וֹת (the signet rings), וְנִזְמֵ֥י (and rings) הָאָֽף׃ (of the nose).

22  הַמַּֽחֲלָצוֹת֙ (The festive robes), וְהַמַּ֣עֲטָפ֔וֹת (and the tunics), וְהַמִּטְפָּח֖וֹת (and the cloaks), וְהָחֲרִיטִֽים׃ (and the purses),

23  וְהַגִּלְיֹנִים֙ (and the mirrors), וְהַסְּדִינִ֔ים (and the linen garments), וְהַצְּנִיפ֖וֹת (and the turbans), וְהָרְדִידִֽים׃ (and the veils).

24  וְהָיָה֩ (And it will come to pass), תַ֨חַת (instead of) בֹּ֜שֶׂם (of spice),

מַ֣ק (rottenness) יִֽהְיֶ֗ה (that there will be);

וְתַ֨חַת (and instead of) חֲגוֹרָ֤ה (a belt), נִקְפָּה֙ (a rope);

וְתַ֨חַת (and instead of) מַעֲשֶׂ֤ה (worked) מִקְשֶׁה֙ (hair), קָרְחָ֔ה (baldness);

וְתַ֥חַת (and instead of) פְּתִיגִ֖יל (a fine robe), מַחֲגֹ֣רֶת (a girding) שָׂ֑ק (of sackcloth);

כִּי־ (and branding) תַ֖חַת (instead of) יֹֽפִי׃ (beauty).

25  מְתַ֖יִךְ (Your men) בַּחֶ֣רֶב (by the sword) יִפֹּ֑לוּ (will fall),

וּגְבוּרָתֵ֖ךְ (and your mighty ones) בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃ (in battle).

26  וְאָנ֥וּ (And will lament) וְאָבְל֖וּ (and mourn) פְּתָחֶ֑יהָ (her gates),

וְנִקָּ֖תָה (and she will be left empty); לָאָ֥רֶץ (on the ground) תֵּשֵֽׁב׃ (she will sit).
