1 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, The word of the LORD came to me: The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying, Moreover, the word of the LORD came to me, saying, The word of the LORD came to me:
2 “Now you, son of man, take up a lament for Tyre. “Now you, son of man, raise a lamentation over Tyre, Now, thou son of man, take up a lamentation for Tyrus; “And you, son of man, take up a song of mourning over Tyre; “Son of man, take up a lament concerning Tyre.
3 Tell Tyre, who dwells at the gateway to the sea, merchant of the peoples on many coasts, that this is what the Lord GOD says: You have said, O Tyre, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’ and say to Tyre, who dwells at the entrances to the sea, merchant of the peoples to many coastlands, thus says the Lord GOD: “O Tyre, you have said, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’ And say unto Tyrus, O thou that art situate at the entry of the sea, <i>which art</i> a merchant of the people for many isles, Thus saith the Lord GOD; O Tyrus, thou hast said, I <i>am</i> of perfect beauty. and say to Tyre, who sits at the entrance to the sea, merchant of the peoples to many coastlands, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: “Tyre, you have said, ‘I am perfect in beauty.’ Say to Tyre, situated at the gateway to the sea, merchant of peoples on many coasts, ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: “’You say, Tyre, “I am perfect in beauty.”
4 Your borders are in the heart of the seas; your builders perfected your beauty. Your borders are in the heart of the seas; your builders made perfect your beauty. Thy borders <i>are</i> in the midst of the seas, thy builders have perfected thy beauty. “Your borders are in the heart of the seas; Your builders have perfected your beauty. Your domain was on the high seas; your builders brought your beauty to perfection.
5 They constructed all your planking with cypress from Senir. They took a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you. They made all your planks of fir trees from Senir; they took a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you. They have made all thy <i>ship</i> boards of fir trees of Senir: they have taken cedars from Lebanon to make masts for thee. “They have made all <i>your</i> planks of juniper trees from Senir; They have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you. They made all your timbers of juniper from Senir; they took a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.
6 Of oaks from Bashan they made your oars; of wood from the coasts of Cyprus they made your deck, inlaid with ivory. Of oaks of Bashan they made your oars; they made your deck of pines from the coasts of Cyprus, inlaid with ivory. <i>Of</i> the oaks of Bashan have they made thine oars; the company of the Ashurites have made thy benches <i>of</i> ivory, <i>brought</i> out of the isles of Chittim. “Of oaks from Bashan they have made your rudders; With ivory they have inlaid your deck of boxwood from the coastlands of Cyprus. Of oaks from Bashan they made your oars; of cypress wood from the coasts of Cyprus they made your deck, adorned with ivory.
7 Of embroidered fine linen from Egypt they made your sail, which served as your banner. Of blue and purple from the coasts of Elishah they made your awning. Of fine embroidered linen from Egypt was your sail, serving as your banner; blue and purple from the coasts of Elishah was your awning. Fine linen with broidered work from Egypt was that which thou spreadest forth to be thy sail; blue and purple from the isles of Elishah was that which covered thee. “Your sail was of colorfully embroidered linen from Egypt So that it became your flag; Your awning was violet and purple from the coastlands of Elishah. Fine embroidered linen from Egypt was your sail and served as your banner; your awnings were of blue and purple from the coasts of Elishah.
8 The men of Sidon and Arvad were your oarsmen. Your men of skill, O Tyre, were there as your captains. The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were your rowers; your skilled men, O Tyre, were in you; they were your pilots. The inhabitants of Zidon and Arvad were thy mariners: thy wise <i>men</i>, O Tyrus, <i>that</i> were in thee, were thy pilots. “The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were your rowers; Your wise men, Tyre, were aboard; they were your sailors. Men of Sidon and Arvad were your oarsmen; your skilled men, Tyre, were aboard as your sailors.
9 The elders of Gebal were aboard as shipwrights, repairing your leaks. All the ships of the sea and their sailors came alongside to barter for your merchandise. The elders of Gebal and her skilled men were in you, caulking your seams; all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you to barter for your wares. The ancients of Gebal and the wise <i>men</i> thereof were in thee thy calkers: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in thee to occupy thy merchandise. “The elders of Gebal and her wise men were with you repairing your leaks; All the ships of the sea and their sailors were with you in order to deal in your merchandise. Veteran craftsmen of Byblos were on board as shipwrights to caulk your seams. All the ships of the sea and their sailors came alongside to trade for your wares.
10 Men of Persia, Lydia, and Put served as warriors in your army. They hung their shields and helmets on your walls; they gave you splendor. “Persia and Lud and Put were in your army as your men of war. They hung the shield and helmet in you; they gave you splendor. They of Persia and of Lud and of Phut were in thine army, thy men of war: they hanged the shield and helmet in thee; they set forth thy comeliness. “Persia, Lud, and Put were in your army, your men of war. They hung up shield and helmet on you; they presented your splendor. “’Men of Persia, Lydia and Put served as soldiers in your army. They hung their shields and helmets on your walls, bringing you splendor.
11 Men of Arvad and Helech manned your walls all around, and the men of Gammad were in your towers. They hung their shields around your walls; they perfected your beauty. Men of Arvad and Helech were on your walls all around, and men of Gamad were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they made perfect your beauty. The men of Arvad with thine army <i>were</i> upon thy walls round about, and the Gammadims were in thy towers: they hanged their shields upon thy walls round about; they have made thy beauty perfect. The sons of Arvad and your army were on your walls, <i>all</i> around, and the Gammadim were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls <i>all</i> around; they perfected your beauty. Men of Arvad and Helek guarded your walls on every side; men of Gammad were in your towers. They hung their shields around your walls; they brought your beauty to perfection.
12 Tarshish was your merchant because of your great wealth of goods; they exchanged silver, iron, tin, and lead for your wares. “Tarshish did business with you because of your great wealth of every kind; silver, iron, tin, and lead they exchanged for your wares. Tarshish <i>was</i> thy merchant by reason of the multitude of all <i>kind of</i> riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded in thy fairs. “Tarshish was your customer because of the abundance of all <i>kinds of</i> wealth; with silver, iron, tin, and lead they paid for your merchandise. “’Tarshish did business with you because of your great wealth of goods; they exchanged silver, iron, tin and lead for your merchandise.
13 Javan, Tubal, and Meshech were your merchants. They exchanged slaves and bronze utensils for your merchandise. Javan, Tubal, and Meshech traded with you; they exchanged human beings and vessels of bronze for your merchandise. Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they <i>were</i> thy merchants: they traded the persons of men and vessels of brass in thy market. Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were your traders; with human lives and vessels of bronze they paid for your merchandise. “’Greece, Tubal and Meshek did business with you; they traded human beings and articles of bronze for your wares.
14 The men of Beth-togarmah exchanged horses, war horses, and mules for your wares. From Beth-togarmah they exchanged horses, war horses, and mules for your wares. They of the house of Togarmah traded in thy fairs with horses and horsemen and mules. Those from Beth-togarmah gave horses, war horses, and mules for your merchandise. “’Men of Beth Togarmah exchanged chariot horses, cavalry horses and mules for your merchandise.
15 The men of Dedan were your clients; many coastlands were your market; they paid you with ivory tusks and ebony. The men of Dedan traded with you. Many coastlands were your own special markets; they brought you in payment ivory tusks and ebony. The men of Dedan <i>were</i> thy merchants; many isles <i>were</i> the merchandise of thine hand: they brought thee <i>for</i> a present horns of ivory and ebony. The sons of Dedan were your traders. Many coastlands were your market; they brought ivory tusks and ebony as your payment. “’The men of Rhodes traded with you, and many coastlands were your customers; they paid you with ivory tusks and ebony.
16 Aram was your customer because of your many products; they exchanged turquoise, purple, embroidered work, fine linen, coral, and rubies for your wares. Syria did business with you because of your abundant goods; they exchanged for your wares emeralds, purple, embroidered work, fine linen, coral, and ruby. Syria <i>was</i> thy merchant by reason of the multitude of the wares of thy making: they occupied in thy fairs with emeralds, purple, and broidered work, and fine linen, and coral, and agate. Aram was your customer because of the abundance of your goods; they paid for your merchandise with emeralds, purple, colorfully woven cloth, fine linen, coral, and rubies. “’Aram did business with you because of your many products; they exchanged turquoise, purple fabric, embroidered work, fine linen, coral and rubies for your merchandise.
17 Judah and the land of Israel traded with you; they exchanged wheat from Minnith, cakes and honey, oil and balm for your merchandise. Judah and the land of Israel traded with you; they exchanged for your merchandise wheat of Minnith, meal, honey, oil, and balm. Judah, and the land of Israel, they <i>were</i> thy merchants: they traded in thy market wheat of Minnith, and Pannag, and honey, and oil, and balm. Judah and the land of Israel, they were your traders; with the wheat of Minnith, cakes, honey, oil, and balsam they paid for your merchandise. “’Judah and Israel traded with you; they exchanged wheat from Minnith and confections, honey, olive oil and balm for your wares.
18 Because of your many products and your great wealth of goods, Damascus traded with you wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar, Damascus did business with you for your abundant goods, because of your great wealth of every kind; wine of Helbon and wool of Sahar Damascus <i>was</i> thy merchant in the multitude of the wares of thy making, for the multitude of all riches; in the wine of Helbon, and white wool. Damascus was your customer because of the abundance of your goods, because of the abundance of all <i>kinds of</i> wealth, because of the wine of Helbon and white wool. “’Damascus did business with you because of your many products and great wealth of goods. They offered wine from Helbon, wool from Zahar
19 and casks of wine from Izal for your wares. Wrought iron, cassia, and sweet cane were exchanged for your merchandise. and casks of wine from Uzal they exchanged for your wares; wrought iron, cassia, and calamus were bartered for your merchandise. Dan also and Javan going to and fro occupied in thy fairs: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were in thy market. Vedan and Javan paid for your merchandise from Uzal; wrought iron, cassia, and spice reed were among your merchandise. and casks of wine from Izal in exchange for your wares: wrought iron, cassia and calamus.
20 Dedan was your merchant in saddlecloths for riding. Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. Dedan <i>was</i> thy merchant in precious clothes for chariots. Dedan traded with you in saddlecloths for riding. “’Dedan traded in saddle blankets with you.
21 Arabia and all the princes of Kedar were your customers, trading in lambs, rams, and goats. Arabia and all the princes of Kedar were your favored dealers in lambs, rams, and goats; in these they did business with you. Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they occupied with thee in lambs, and rams, and goats: in these <i>were they</i> thy merchants. Arabia and all the princes of Kedar, they were your customers for lambs, rams, and goats; for these they were your customers. “’Arabia and all the princes of Kedar were your customers; they did business with you in lambs, rams and goats.
22 The merchants of Sheba and Raamah traded with you; for your wares they exchanged gold, the finest of all spices, and precious stones. The traders of Sheba and Raamah traded with you; they exchanged for your wares the best of all kinds of spices and all precious stones and gold. The merchants of Sheba and Raamah, they <i>were</i> thy merchants: they occupied in thy fairs with chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold. The traders of Sheba and Raamah, they traded with you; they paid for your merchandise with the best of all balsam oil, and with all <i>kinds of</i> precious stones, and gold. “’The merchants of Sheba and Raamah traded with you; for your merchandise they exchanged the finest of all kinds of spices and precious stones, and gold.
23 Haran, Canneh, and Eden traded with you, and so did the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad. Haran, Canneh, Eden, traders of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad traded with you. Haran, and Canneh, and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, <i>and</i> Chilmad, <i>were</i> thy merchants. Haran, Canneh, Eden, the traders of Sheba, Asshur, <i>and</i> Chilmad traded with you. “’Harran, Kanneh and Eden and merchants of Sheba, Ashur and Kilmad traded with you.
24 In your marketplace they traded with you fine garments of blue, embroidered work, and multicolored rugs with cords tightly twisted and knotted. In your market these traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of blue and embroidered work, and in carpets of colored material, bound with cords and made secure. These <i>were</i> thy merchants in all sorts <i>of things</i>, in blue clothes, and broidered work, and in chests of rich apparel, bound with cords, and made of cedar, among thy merchandise. They traded with you in choice garments, in clothes of violet and colorfully woven cloth, and in blankets of two colors, <i>and</i> tightly wound cords, <i>which were</i> among your merchandise. In your marketplace they traded with you beautiful garments, blue fabric, embroidered work and multicolored rugs with cords twisted and tightly knotted.
25 The ships of Tarshish carried your merchandise. And you were filled with heavy cargo in the heart of the sea. The ships of Tarshish traveled for you with your merchandise. So you were filled and heavily laden in the heart of the seas. The ships of Tarshish did sing of thee in thy market: and thou wast replenished, and made very glorious in the midst of the seas. The ships of Tarshish were the carriers for your merchandise. And you were filled and were very glorious In the heart of the seas. “’The ships of Tarshish serve as carriers for your wares. You are filled with heavy cargo as you sail the sea.
26 Your oarsmen have brought you onto the high seas, but the east wind will shatter you in the heart of the sea. “Your rowers have brought you out into the high seas. The east wind has wrecked you in the heart of the seas. Thy rowers have brought thee into great waters: the east wind hath broken thee in the midst of the seas. “Your rowers have brought you Into great waters; The east wind has broken you In the heart of the seas. Your oarsmen take you out to the high seas. But the east wind will break you to pieces far out at sea.
27 Your wealth, wares, and merchandise, your sailors, captains, and shipwrights, your merchants and all the warriors within you, with all the other people on board, will sink into the heart of the sea on the day of your downfall. Your riches, your wares, your merchandise, your mariners and your pilots, your caulkers, your dealers in merchandise, and all your men of war who are in you, with all your crew that is in your midst, sink into the heart of the seas on the day of your fall. Thy riches, and thy fairs, thy merchandise, thy mariners, and thy pilots, thy calkers, and the occupiers of thy merchandise, and all thy men of war, that <i>are</i> in thee, and in all thy company which <i>is</i> in the midst of thee, shall fall into the midst of the seas in the day of thy ruin. “Your wealth, your wares, your merchandise, Your seamen and your sailors, Your repairers of leaks, your dealers in merchandise, And all your men of war who are in you, With all your contingent that is in your midst, Will fall into the heart of the seas On the day of your overthrow. Your wealth, merchandise and wares, your mariners, sailors and shipwrights, your merchants and all your soldiers, and everyone else on board will sink into the heart of the sea on the day of your shipwreck.
28 The countryside will shake when your sailors cry out. At the sound of the cry of your pilots the countryside shakes, The suburbs shall shake at the sound of the cry of thy pilots. “At the sound of the cry of your sailors, The pasture lands will shake. The shorelands will quake when your sailors cry out.
29 All who handle the oars will abandon their ships. The sailors and all the captains of the sea will stand on the shore. and down from their ships come all who handle the oar. The mariners and all the pilots of the sea stand on the land And all that handle the oar, the mariners, <i>and</i> all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships, they shall stand upon the land; “All who handle the oar, The seamen <i>and</i> all the sailors of the sea Will come down from their ships; They will stand on the land, All who handle the oars will abandon their ships; the mariners and all the sailors will stand on the shore.
30 They will raise their voices for you and cry out bitterly. They will throw dust on their heads and roll in ashes. and shout aloud over you and cry out bitterly. They cast dust on their heads and wallow in ashes; And shall cause their voice to be heard against thee, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust upon their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes: And they will make their voice heard over you And cry out bitterly. They will throw dust on their heads, They will wallow in ashes. They will raise their voice and cry bitterly over you; they will sprinkle dust on their heads and roll in ashes.
31 They will shave their heads for you and wrap themselves in sackcloth. They will weep over you with anguish of soul and bitter mourning. they make themselves bald for you and put sackcloth on their waist, and they weep over you in bitterness of soul, with bitter mourning. And they shall make themselves utterly bald for thee, and gird them with sackcloth, and they shall weep for thee with bitterness of heart <i>and</i> bitter wailing. “Also they will shave themselves bald for you And put on sackcloth; And they will weep for you in bitterness of soul With bitter mourning. They will shave their heads because of you and will put on sackcloth. They will weep over you with anguish of soul and with bitter mourning.
32 As they wail and mourn over you, they will take up a lament for you: ‘Who was ever like Tyre, silenced in the middle of the sea? In their wailing they raise a lamentation for you and lament over you: ‘Who is like Tyre, like one destroyed in the midst of the sea? And in their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for thee, and lament over thee, <i>saying</i>, What <i>city is</i> like Tyrus, like the destroyed in the midst of the sea? “Moreover, in their wailing they will take up a song of mourning for you And sing a song of mourning over you: ‘Who is like Tyre, Like her who is silent in the midst of the sea? As they wail and mourn over you, they will take up a lament concerning you: “Who was ever silenced like Tyre, surrounded by the sea?”
33 When your wares went out to sea, you satisfied many nations. You enriched the kings of the earth with your abundant wealth and merchandise. When your wares came from the seas, you satisfied many peoples; with your abundant wealth and merchandise you enriched the kings of the earth. When thy wares went forth out of the seas, thou filledst many people; thou didst enrich the kings of the earth with the multitude of thy riches and of thy merchandise. ‘When your merchandise went out from the seas, You satisfied many peoples; With the abundance of your wealth and your merchandise You enriched the kings of the earth. When your merchandise went out on the seas, you satisfied many nations; with your great wealth and your wares you enriched the kings of the earth.
34 Now you are shattered by the seas in the depths of the waters; your merchandise and the people among you have gone down with you. Now you are wrecked by the seas, in the depths of the waters; your merchandise and all your crew in your midst have sunk with you. In the time <i>when</i> thou shalt be broken by the seas in the depths of the waters thy merchandise and all thy company in the midst of thee shall fall. ‘Now that you are broken by the seas In the depths of the waters, Your merchandise and all your company Have fallen in the midst of you. Now you are shattered by the sea in the depths of the waters; your wares and all your company have gone down with you.
35 All the people of the coastlands are appalled over you. Their kings shudder with fear; their faces are contorted. All the inhabitants of the coastlands are appalled at you, and the hair of their kings bristles with horror; their faces are convulsed. All the inhabitants of the isles shall be astonished at thee, and their kings shall be sore afraid, they shall be troubled in <i>their</i> countenance. ‘All the inhabitants of the coastlands Are appalled at you, And their kings are horribly afraid; They have a troubled look. All who live in the coastlands are appalled at you; their kings shudder with horror and their faces are distorted with fear.
36 Those who trade among the nations hiss at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.’ ” The merchants among the peoples hiss at you; you have come to a dreadful end and shall be no more forever.’” The merchants among the people shall hiss at thee; thou shalt be a terror, and never <i>shalt be</i> any more. ‘The merchants among the peoples hiss at you; You have become terrified And you will cease to be forever.’”’” The merchants among the nations scoff at you; you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.’”
