Very early in the morning the leading priests, the elders, and the teachers of religious law—the entire high council —met to discuss their next step. They bound Jesus, led him away, and took him to Pilate, the Roman governor.1Early in the morning, after forming a plan, the chief priests with the elders and the experts in the law and the whole Sanhedrin tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.
Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus replied, “You have said it.”2So Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He replied, "You say so."
Then the leading priests kept accusing him of many crimes,3Then the chief priests began to accuse him repeatedly.
and Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer them? What about all these charges they are bringing against you?”4So Pilate asked him again, "Have you nothing to say? See how many charges they are bringing against you!"
But Jesus said nothing, much to Pilate’s surprise.5But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.
Now it was the governor’s custom each year during the Passover celebration to release one prisoner—anyone the people requested.6During the feast it was customary to release one prisoner to the people, whomever they requested.
One of the prisoners at that time was Barabbas, a revolutionary who had committed murder in an uprising.7A man named Barabbas was imprisoned with rebels who had committed murder during an insurrection.
The crowd went to Pilate and asked him to release a prisoner as usual.8Then the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to release a prisoner for them, as was his custom.
“Would you like me to release to you this ‘King of the Jews’?” Pilate asked.9So Pilate asked them, "Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?"
(For he realized by now that the leading priests had arrested Jesus out of envy.)10(For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.)
But at this point the leading priests stirred up the crowd to demand the release of Barabbas instead of Jesus.11But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas instead.
Pilate asked them, “Then what should I do with this man you call the king of the Jews?”12So Pilate spoke to them again, "Then what do you want me to do with the one you call king of the Jews?"
They shouted back, “Crucify him!”13They shouted back, "Crucify him!"
“Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?” But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!”14Pilate asked them, "Why? What has he done wrong?" But they shouted more insistently, "Crucify him!"
So to pacify the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He ordered Jesus flogged with a lead-tipped whip, then turned him over to the Roman soldiers to be crucified. The Soldiers Mock Jesus15Because he wanted to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them. Then, after he had Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.
The soldiers took Jesus into the courtyard of the governor’s headquarters (called the Praetorium) and called out the entire regiment.16So the soldiers led him into the palace (that is, the governor's residence) and called together the whole cohort.
They dressed him in a purple robe, and they wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head.17They put a purple cloak on him and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on him.
Then they saluted him and taunted, “Hail! King of the Jews!”18They began to salute him: "Hail, king of the Jews!"
And they struck him on the head with a reed stick, spit on him, and dropped to their knees in mock worship.19Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Then they knelt down and paid homage to him.
When they were finally tired of mocking him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified. The Crucifixion20When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
A passerby named Simon, who was from Cyrene, was coming in from the countryside just then, and the soldiers forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. (Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus.)21The soldiers forced a passerby to carry his cross, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country (he was the father of Alexander and Rufus).
And they brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which means “Place of the Skull”).22They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha (which is translated, "Place of the Skull").
They offered him wine drugged with myrrh, but he refused it.23They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
Then the soldiers nailed him to the cross. They divided his clothes and threw dice to decide who would get each piece.24Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, throwing dice for them, to decide what each would take.
It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him.25It was nine o'clock in the morning when they crucified him.
A sign announced the charge against him. It read, “The King of the Jews.”26The inscription of the charge against him read, "The king of the Jews."
Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.27And they crucified two outlaws with him, one on his right and one on his left.

The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. “Ha! Look at you now!” they yelled at him. “You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days.29Those who passed by defamed him, shaking their heads and saying, "Aha! You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,
Well then, save yourself and come down from the cross!”30save yourself and come down from the cross!"
The leading priests and teachers of religious law also mocked Jesus. “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself!31In the same way even the chief priests--together with the experts in the law--were mocking him among themselves: "He saved others, but he cannot save himself!
Let this Messiah, this King of Israel, come down from the cross so we can see it and believe him!” Even the men who were crucified with Jesus ridiculed him. The Death of Jesus32Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, that we may see and believe!" Those who were crucified with him also spoke abusively to him.
At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.33Now when it was noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?”34Around three o'clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
Some of the bystanders misunderstood and thought he was calling for the prophet Elijah.35When some of the bystanders heard it they said, "Listen, he is calling for Elijah!"
One of them ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, holding it up to him on a reed stick so he could drink. “Wait!” he said. “Let’s see whether Elijah comes to take him down!”36Then someone ran, filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Leave him alone! Let's see if Elijah will come to take him down!"
Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last.37But Jesus cried out with a loud voice and breathed his last.
And the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.38And the temple curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom.
When the Roman officer who stood facing him saw how he had died, he exclaimed, “This man truly was the Son of God!”39Now when the centurion, who stood in front of him, saw how he died, he said, "Truly this man was God's Son!"
Some women were there, watching from a distance, including Mary Magdalene, Mary (the mother of James the younger and of Joseph ), and Salome.40There were also women, watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.
They had been followers of Jesus and had cared for him while he was in Galilee. Many other women who had come with him to Jerusalem were also there. The Burial of Jesus41When he was in Galilee, they had followed him and given him support. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were there too.
This all happened on Friday, the day of preparation, the day before the Sabbath. As evening approached,42Now when evening had already come, since it was the day of preparation (that is, the day before the Sabbath),
Joseph of Arimathea took a risk and went to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. (Joseph was an honored member of the high council, and he was waiting for the Kingdom of God to come.)43Joseph of Arimathea, a highly regarded member of the council, who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
Pilate couldn’t believe that Jesus was already dead, so he called for the Roman officer and asked if he had died yet.44Pilate was surprised that he was already dead. He called the centurion and asked him if he had been dead for some time.
The officer confirmed that Jesus was dead, so Pilate told Joseph he could have the body.45When Pilate was informed by the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.
Joseph bought a long sheet of linen cloth. Then he took Jesus’ body down from the cross, wrapped it in the cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been carved out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone in front of the entrance.46After Joseph bought a linen cloth and took down the body, he wrapped it in the linen and placed it in a tomb cut out of the rock. Then he rolled a stone across the entrance of the tomb.
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where Jesus’ body was laid.47Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where the body was placed.
