| 1A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.” | 1Now a wife of one of the prophets appealed to Elisha for help, saying, "Your servant, my husband is dead. You know that your servant was a loyal follower of the LORD. Now the creditor is coming to take away my two boys to be his servants." |
| 2So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.” | 2Elisha said to her, "What can I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?" She answered, "Your servant has nothing in the house except a small jar of olive oil." |
| 3Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. | 3He said, "Go and ask all your neighbors for empty containers. Get as many as you can. |
| 4And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.” | 4Go and close the door behind you and your sons. Pour the olive oil into all the containers; set aside each one when you have filled it." |
| 5So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. | 5So she left him and closed the door behind her and her sons. As they were bringing the containers to her, she was pouring the olive oil. |
| 6Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another vessel.” So the oil ceased. | 6When the containers were full, she said to one of her sons, "Bring me another container." But he answered her, "There are no more." Then the olive oil stopped flowing. |
| 7Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.” | 7She went and told the prophet. He said, "Go, sell the olive oil. Repay your creditor, and then you and your sons can live off the rest of the profit." |
| 8Now it happened one day that Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a notable woman, and she persuaded him to eat some food. So it was, as often as he passed by, he would turn in there to eat some food. | 8One day Elisha traveled to Shunem, where a prominent woman lived. She insisted that he stop for a meal. So whenever he was passing through, he would stop in there for a meal. |
| 9And she said to her husband, “Look now, I know that this is a holy man of God, who passes by us regularly. | 9She said to her husband, "Look, I'm sure that the man who regularly passes through here is a very special prophet. |
| 10Please, let us make a small upper room on the wall; and let us put a bed for him there, and a table and a chair and a lampstand; so it will be, whenever he comes to us, he can turn in there.” | 10Let's make a small private upper room and furnish it with a bed, table, chair, and lamp. When he visits us, he can stay there." |
| 11And it happened one day that he came there, and he turned in to the upper room and lay down there. | 11One day Elisha came for a visit; he went into the upper room and rested. |
| 12Then he said to Gehazi his servant, “Call this Shunammite woman.” When he had called her, she stood before him. | 12He told his servant Gehazi, "Ask the Shunammite woman to come here." So he did so and she came to him. |
| 13And he said to him, “Say now to her, ‘Look, you have been concerned for us with all this care. What can I do for you? Do you want me to speak on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?’ ” She answered, “I dwell among my own people.” | 13Elisha said to Gehazi, "Tell her, 'Look, you have treated us with such great respect. What can I do for you? Can I put in a good word for you with the king or the commander of the army?'" She replied, "I'm quite secure." |
| 14So he said, “What then is to be done for her?” And Gehazi answered, “Actually, she has no son, and her husband is old.” | 14So he asked Gehazi, "What can I do for her?" Gehazi replied, "She has no son, and her husband is old." |
| 15So he said, “Call her.” When he had called her, she stood in the doorway. | 15Elisha told him, "Ask her to come here." So he did so and she came and stood in the doorway. |
| 16Then he said, “About this time next year you shall embrace a son.” And she said, “No, my lord. Man of God, do not lie to your maidservant!” | 16He said, "About this time next year you will be holding a son." She said, "No, my master! O prophet, do not lie to your servant!" |
| 17But the woman conceived, and bore a son when the appointed time had come, of which Elisha had told her. | 17The woman did conceive, and at the specified time the next year she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her. |
| 18And the child grew. Now it happened one day that he went out to his father, to the reapers. | 18The boy grew and one day he went out to see his father who was with the harvest workers. |
| 19And he said to his father, “My head, my head!” So he said to a servant, “Carry him to his mother.” | 19He said to his father, "My head! My head!" His father told a servant, "Carry him to his mother." |
| 20When he had taken him and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. | 20So he picked him up and took him to his mother. He sat on her lap until noon and then died. |
| 21And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, shut the door upon him, and went out. | 21She went up and laid him down on the prophet's bed. She shut the door behind her and left. |
| 22Then she called to her husband, and said, “Please send me one of the young men and one of the donkeys, that I may run to the man of God and come back.” | 22She called to her husband, "Send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so I can go see the prophet quickly and then return." |
| 23So he said, “Why are you going to him today? It is neither the New Moon nor the Sabbath.” And she said, “It is well.” | 23He said, "Why do you want to go see him today? It is not the new moon or the Sabbath." She said, "Everything's fine." |
| 24Then she saddled a donkey, and said to her servant, “Drive, and go forward; do not slacken the pace for me unless I tell you.” | 24She saddled the donkey and told her servant, "Lead on. Do not stop unless I say so." |
| 25And so she departed, and went to the man of God at Mount Carmel. So it was, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to his servant Gehazi, “Look, the Shunammite woman! | 25So she went to visit the prophet at Mount Carmel. When he saw her at a distance, he said to his servant Gehazi, "Look, it's the Shunammite woman. |
| 26Please run now to meet her, and say to her, ‘Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband? Is it well with the child?’ ” And she answered, “It is well.” | 26Now, run to meet her and ask her, 'Are you well? Are your husband and the boy well?'" She told Gehazi, "Everything's fine." |
| 27Now when she came to the man of God at the hill, she caught him by the feet, but Gehazi came near to push her away. But the man of God said, “Let her alone; for her soul is in deep distress, and the LORD has hidden it from me, and has not told me.” | 27But when she reached the prophet on the mountain, she grabbed hold of his feet. Gehazi came near to push her away, but the prophet said, "Leave her alone, for she is very upset. The LORD has kept the matter hidden from me; he didn't tell me about it." |
| 28So she said, “Did I ask a son of my lord? Did I not say, ‘Do not deceive me’?” | 28She said, "Did I ask my master for a son? Didn't I say, 'Don't mislead me?'" |
| 29Then he said to Gehazi, “Get yourself ready, and take my staff in your hand, and be on your way. If you meet anyone, do not greet him; and if anyone greets you, do not answer him; but lay my staff on the face of the child.” | 29Elisha told Gehazi, "Tuck your robes into your belt, take my staff, and go! Don't stop to exchange greetings with anyone! Place my staff on the child's face." |
| 30And the mother of the child said, “As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So he arose and followed her. | 30The mother of the child said, "As certainly as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you." So Elisha got up and followed her back. |
| 31Now Gehazi went on ahead of them, and laid the staff on the face of the child; but there was neither voice nor hearing. Therefore he went back to meet him, and told him, saying, “The child has not awakened.” | 31Now Gehazi went on ahead of them. He placed the staff on the child's face, but there was no sound or response. When he came back to Elisha he told him, "The child did not wake up." |
| 32When Elisha came into the house, there was the child, lying dead on his bed. | 32When Elisha arrived at the house, there was the child lying dead on his bed. |
| 33He went in therefore, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the LORD. | 33He went in by himself and closed the door. Then he prayed to the LORD. |
| 34And he went up and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands; and he stretched himself out on the child, and the flesh of the child became warm. | 34He got up on the bed and spread his body out over the boy; he put his mouth on the boy's mouth, his eyes over the boy's eyes, and the palms of his hands against the boy's palms. He bent down over him, and the boy's skin grew warm. |
| 35He returned and walked back and forth in the house, and again went up and stretched himself out on him; then the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. | 35Elisha went back and walked around in the house. Then he got up on the bed again and bent down over him. The child sneezed seven times and opened his eyes. |
| 36And he called Gehazi and said, “Call this Shunammite woman.” So he called her. And when she came in to him, he said, “Pick up your son.” | 36Elisha called to Gehazi and said, "Get the Shunammite woman." So he did so and she came to him. He said to her, "Take your son." |
| 37So she went in, fell at his feet, and bowed to the ground; then she picked up her son and went out. | 37She came in, fell at his feet, and bowed down. Then she picked up her son and left. |
| 38And Elisha returned to Gilgal, and there was a famine in the land. Now the sons of the prophets were sitting before him; and he said to his servant, “Put on the large pot, and boil stew for the sons of the prophets.” | 38Now Elisha went back to Gilgal, while there was famine in the land. Some of the prophets were visiting him and he told his servant, "Put the big pot on the fire and boil some stew for the prophets." |
| 39So one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered from it a lapful of wild gourds, and came and sliced them into the pot of stew, though they did not know what they were. | 39Someone went out to the field to gather some herbs and found a wild vine. He picked some of its fruit, enough to fill up the fold of his robe. He came back, cut it up, and threw the slices into the stew pot, not knowing they were harmful. |
| 40Then they served it to the men to eat. Now it happened, as they were eating the stew, that they cried out and said, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it. | 40The stew was poured out for the men to eat. When they ate some of the stew, they cried out, "Death is in the pot, O prophet!" They could not eat it. |
| 41So he said, “Then bring some flour.” And he put it into the pot, and said, “Serve it to the people, that they may eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot. | 41He said, "Get some flour." Then he threw it into the pot and said, "Now pour some out for the men so they may eat." There was no longer anything harmful in the pot. |
| 42Then a man came from Baal Shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley bread, and newly ripened grain in his knapsack. And he said, “Give it to the people, that they may eat.” | 42Now a man from Baal Shalisha brought some food for the prophet--twenty loaves of bread made from the firstfruits of the barley harvest, as well as fresh ears of grain. Elisha said, "Set it before the people so they may eat." |
| 43But his servant said, “What? Shall I set this before one hundred men?” He said again, “Give it to the people, that they may eat; for thus says the LORD: ‘They shall eat and have some left over.’ ” | 43But his attendant said, "How can I feed a hundred men with this?" He replied, "Set it before the people so they may eat, for this is what the LORD says, 'They will eat and have some left over.'" |
| 44So he set it before them; and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the LORD. | 44So he set it before them; they ate and had some left over, just as the LORD predicted. |
