| 1A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.” | 1One of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, "Your servant, my husband, has died. You know that your servant feared the LORD. Now the creditor is coming to take my two children as his slaves." |
| 2So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.” | 2Elisha asked her, "What can I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?" She said, "Your servant has nothing in the house except a jar of oil." |
| 3Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. | 3Then he said, "Go and borrow empty containers from everyone--from all your neighbors. Do not get just a few. |
| 4And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.” | 4Then go in and shut the door behind you and your sons, and pour oil into all these containers. Set the full ones to one side." |
| 5So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. | 5So she left. After she had shut the door behind her and her sons, they kept bringing her containers, and she kept pouring. |
| 6Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another vessel.” So the oil ceased. | 6When they were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another container." But he replied, "There aren't any more." Then the oil stopped. |
| 7Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.” | 7She went and told the man of God, and he said, "Go sell the oil and pay your debt; you and your sons can live on the rest." |
| 8Now it happened one day that Elisha went to Shunem, where there was a notable woman, and she persuaded him to eat some food. So it was, as often as he passed by, he would turn in there to eat some food. | 8One day Elisha went to Shunem. A prominent woman who lived there persuaded him to eat some food. So whenever he passed by, he stopped there to eat. |
| 9And she said to her husband, “Look now, I know that this is a holy man of God, who passes by us regularly. | 9Then she said to her husband, "I know that the one who often passes by here is a holy man of God, |
| 10Please, let us make a small upper room on the wall; and let us put a bed for him there, and a table and a chair and a lampstand; so it will be, whenever he comes to us, he can turn in there.” | 10so let's make a small room upstairs and put a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp there for him. Whenever he comes, he can stay there." |
| 11And it happened one day that he came there, and he turned in to the upper room and lay down there. | 11One day he came there and stopped and went to the room upstairs to lie down. |
| 12Then he said to Gehazi his servant, “Call this Shunammite woman.” When he had called her, she stood before him. | 12He ordered his attendant Gehazi, "Call this Shunammite woman." So he called her and she stood before him. |
| 13And he said to him, “Say now to her, ‘Look, you have been concerned for us with all this care. What can I do for you? Do you want me to speak on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?’ ” She answered, “I dwell among my own people.” | 13Then he said to Gehazi, "Say to her, 'Look, you've gone to all this trouble for us. What can we do for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?" She answered, "I am living among my own people." |
| 14So he said, “What then is to be done for her?” And Gehazi answered, “Actually, she has no son, and her husband is old.” | 14So he asked, "Then what should be done for her?" Gehazi answered, "Well, she has no son, and her husband is old."" |
| 15So he said, “Call her.” When he had called her, she stood in the doorway. | 15Call her," Elisha said. So Gehazi called her, and she stood in the doorway. |
| 16Then he said, “About this time next year you shall embrace a son.” And she said, “No, my lord. Man of God, do not lie to your maidservant!” | 16Elisha said, "At this time next year you will have a son in your arms." Then she said, "No, my lord. Man of God, do not deceive your servant." |
| 17But the woman conceived, and bore a son when the appointed time had come, of which Elisha had told her. | 17The woman conceived and gave birth to a son at the same time the following year, as Elisha had promised her. |
| 18And the child grew. Now it happened one day that he went out to his father, to the reapers. | 18The child grew and one day went out to his father and the harvesters. |
| 19And he said to his father, “My head, my head!” So he said to a servant, “Carry him to his mother.” | 19Suddenly he complained to his father, "My head! My head!" His father told his servant, "Carry him to his mother." |
| 20When he had taken him and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died. | 20So he picked him up and took him to his mother. The child sat on her lap until noon and then died. |
| 21And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, shut the door upon him, and went out. | 21Then she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, shut him in, and left. |
| 22Then she called to her husband, and said, “Please send me one of the young men and one of the donkeys, that I may run to the man of God and come back.” | 22She summoned her husband and said, "Please send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so I can hurry to the man of God and then come back." |
| 23So he said, “Why are you going to him today? It is neither the New Moon nor the Sabbath.” And she said, “It is well.” | 23But he said, "Why go to him today? It's not a New Moon or a Sabbath." She replied, "Everything is all right." |
| 24Then she saddled a donkey, and said to her servant, “Drive, and go forward; do not slacken the pace for me unless I tell you.” | 24Then she saddled the donkey and said to her servant, "Hurry, don't slow the pace for me unless I tell you." |
| 25And so she departed, and went to the man of God at Mount Carmel. So it was, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to his servant Gehazi, “Look, the Shunammite woman! | 25So she set out and went to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When the man of God saw her at a distance, he said to his attendant Gehazi, "Look, there's the Shunammite woman. |
| 26Please run now to meet her, and say to her, ‘Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband? Is it well with the child?’ ” And she answered, “It is well.” | 26Run out to meet her and ask, 'Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your son all right?" And she answered, "Everything's all right." |
| 27Now when she came to the man of God at the hill, she caught him by the feet, but Gehazi came near to push her away. But the man of God said, “Let her alone; for her soul is in deep distress, and the LORD has hidden it from me, and has not told me.” | 27When she came up to the man of God at the mountain, she clung to his feet. Gehazi came to push her away, but the man of God said, "Leave her alone--she is in severe anguish, and the LORD has hidden it from me. He hasn't told me." |
| 28So she said, “Did I ask a son of my lord? Did I not say, ‘Do not deceive me’?” | 28Then she said, "Did I ask my lord for a son? Didn't I say, 'Do not deceive me?" |
| 29Then he said to Gehazi, “Get yourself ready, and take my staff in your hand, and be on your way. If you meet anyone, do not greet him; and if anyone greets you, do not answer him; but lay my staff on the face of the child.” | 29So Elisha said to Gehazi, "Tuck your mantle under your belt, take my staff with you, and go. If you meet anyone, don't stop to greet him, and if a man greets you, don't answer him. Then place my staff on the boy's face." |
| 30And the mother of the child said, “As the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.” So he arose and followed her. | 30The boy's mother said to Elisha, "As the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So he got up and followed her. |
| 31Now Gehazi went on ahead of them, and laid the staff on the face of the child; but there was neither voice nor hearing. Therefore he went back to meet him, and told him, saying, “The child has not awakened.” | 31Gehazi went ahead of them and placed the staff on the boy's face, but there was no sound or sign of life, so he went back to meet Elisha and told him, "The boy didn't wake up." |
| 32When Elisha came into the house, there was the child, lying dead on his bed. | 32When Elisha got to the house, he discovered the boy lying dead on his bed. |
| 33He went in therefore, shut the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the LORD. | 33So he went in, closed the door behind the two of them, and prayed to the LORD. |
| 34And he went up and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands; and he stretched himself out on the child, and the flesh of the child became warm. | 34Then he went up and lay on the boy: he put mouth to mouth, eye to eye, hand to hand. While he bent down over him, the boy's flesh became warm. |
| 35He returned and walked back and forth in the house, and again went up and stretched himself out on him; then the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. | 35Elisha got up, went into the house, and paced back and forth. Then he went up and bent down over him again. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes. |
| 36And he called Gehazi and said, “Call this Shunammite woman.” So he called her. And when she came in to him, he said, “Pick up your son.” | 36Elisha called Gehazi and said, "Call the Shunammite woman." He called her and she came. Then Elisha said, "Pick up your son." |
| 37So she went in, fell at his feet, and bowed to the ground; then she picked up her son and went out. | 37She came, fell at his feet, and bowed to the ground; she picked up her son and left. |
| 38And Elisha returned to Gilgal, and there was a famine in the land. Now the sons of the prophets were sitting before him; and he said to his servant, “Put on the large pot, and boil stew for the sons of the prophets.” | 38When Elisha returned to Gilgal, there was a famine in the land. The sons of the prophets were sitting at his feet. He said to his attendant, "Put on the large pot and make stew for the sons of the prophets." |
| 39So one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered from it a lapful of wild gourds, and came and sliced them into the pot of stew, though they did not know what they were. | 39One went out to the field to gather herbs and found a wild vine from which he gathered as many wild gourds as his garment would hold. Then he came back and cut them up into the pot of stew, but they were unaware of what they were. |
| 40Then they served it to the men to eat. Now it happened, as they were eating the stew, that they cried out and said, “Man of God, there is death in the pot!” And they could not eat it. | 40They served some for the men to eat, but when they ate the stew they cried out, "There's death in the pot, man of God!" And they were unable to eat it. |
| 41So he said, “Then bring some flour.” And he put it into the pot, and said, “Serve it to the people, that they may eat.” And there was nothing harmful in the pot. | 41Then Elisha said, "Get some meal." He threw it into the pot and said, "Serve it for the people to eat." And there was nothing bad in the pot. |
| 42Then a man came from Baal Shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley bread, and newly ripened grain in his knapsack. And he said, “Give it to the people, that they may eat.” | 42A man from Baal-shalishah came to the man of God with his sack full of 20 loaves of barley bread from the first bread of the harvest. Elisha said, "Give it to the people to eat." |
| 43But his servant said, “What? Shall I set this before one hundred men?” He said again, “Give it to the people, that they may eat; for thus says the LORD: ‘They shall eat and have some left over.’ ” | 43But Elisha's attendant asked, "What? Am I to set 20 loaves before 100 men?"" Give it to the people to eat," Elisha said, "for this is what the LORD says: 'They will eat, and they will have some left over.'" |
| 44So he set it before them; and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the LORD. | 44So he gave it to them, and as the LORD had promised, they ate and had some left over. |
