The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. | 1This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God. |
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. | 2As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "See! I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way. |
A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord; make his paths straight! | 3He is a voice calling out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way for the Lord! Make his paths straight!'" |
John came baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. | 4John was baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism about repentance for the forgiveness of sins. |
The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins. | 5People from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were flocking to him, being baptized by him while they confessed their sins. |
John wore a camel-hair garment with a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey. | 6Now John was dressed in camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist. He ate grasshoppers and wild honey. |
He proclaimed, "One who is more powerful than I am is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals. | 7He kept proclaiming, "The one who is coming after me is stronger than I am, and I am not worthy to bend down and untie his sandal straps. |
I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." | 8I baptized you with water, but it is he who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." |
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized in the Jordan by John. | 9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. |
As soon as he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. | 10Just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens split open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. |
And a voice came from heaven: "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased." | 11Then a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with you!" |
Immediately the Spirit drove him into the wilderness. | 12At once the Spirit drove him into the wilderness. |
He was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels were serving him. | 13He was in the wilderness for 40 days being tempted by Satan. He was among wild animals, and angels were ministering to him. |
After John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God: | 14Now after John had been arrested, Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the gospel about the kingdom of God. |
"The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!" | 15He said, "The time is now! The kingdom of God is near! Repent, and keep believing the gospel!" |
As he passed alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew, Simon's brother, casting a net into the sea--for they were fishermen. | 16While Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the sea because they were fishermen. |
"Follow me," Jesus told them, "and I will make you fish for people." | 17Jesus told them, "Follow me, and I'll make you fishers of people!" |
Immediately they left their nets and followed him. | 18So immediately they left their nets and followed him. |
Going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat putting their nets in order. | 19Going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat repairing their nets. |
Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. | 20He immediately called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him. |
They went into Capernaum, and right away he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and began to teach. | 21Then they went to Capernaum. As soon as it was the Sabbaths, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. |
They were astonished at his teaching because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes. | 22The people were utterly amazed at his teaching, because he was teaching them like one with authority, and not like their scribes. |
Just then a man with an unclean spirit was in their synagogue. He cried out, | 23All of a sudden, there was a man in their synagogue who had an unclean spirit! He screamed, |
"What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" | 24"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!" |
Jesus rebuked him saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!" | 25But Jesus rebuked him. "Be quiet," he ordered, "and come out of him!" |
And the unclean spirit threw him into convulsions, shouted with a loud voice, and came out of him. | 26At this, the unclean spirit shook the man, cried out with a loud voice, and came out of him. |
They were all amazed, and so they began to ask each other: "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him." | 27All the people were so stunned that they kept saying to each other, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He tells even the unclean spirits what to do, and they obey him!" |
At once the news about him spread throughout the entire vicinity of Galilee. | 28At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. |
As soon as they left the synagogue, they went into Simon and Andrew's house with James and John. | 29After they left the synagogue, they went directly to the house of Simon and Andrew, along with James and John. |
Simon's mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. | 30Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying in bed, sick with a fever, so they promptly told Jesus about her. |
So he went to her, took her by the hand, and raised her up. The fever left her, and she began to serve them. | 31He went up to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began serving them. |
When evening came, after the sun had set, they brought to him all those who were sick and demon-possessed. | 32When evening came, after the sun had set, people started bringing to him everyone who was sick or possessed by demons. |
The whole town was assembled at the door, | 33In fact, the whole city gathered at the door. |
and he healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. | 34He healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. However, he wouldn't allow the demons to speak because they knew who he was. |
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he got up, went out, and made his way to a deserted place; and there he was praying. | 35In the morning, while it was still very dark, Jesus got up and went to a deserted place and prayed there. |
Simon and his companions searched for him, | 36Simon and his companions searched frantically for him. |
and when they found him they said, "Everyone is looking for you." | 37When they found him, they told him, "Everyone's looking for you." |
And he said to them, "Let's go on to the neighboring villages so that I may preach there too. This is why I have come." | 38"Let's go to the neighboring town," he replied, "so I can preach there, too, because that's why I came." |
He went into all of Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. | 39So he went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons. |
Then a man with leprosy came to him and, on his knees, begged him: "If you are willing, you can make me clean." | 40Then a leper came to Jesus and began pleading with him. He fell on his knees and told him, "If you want to, you can make me clean." |
Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched him. "I am willing," he told him. "Be made clean." | 41Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand, touched him, and told him, "I do want to. Be made clean!" |
Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. | 42Instantly the leprosy left him, and he was clean. |
Then he sternly warned him and sent him away at once, | 43Then Jesus sternly warned him and encouraged him to go at once. |
telling him, "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go and show yourself to the priest, and offer what Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them." | 44He told the man, "Be sure that you don't tell anyone. Instead, go and show yourself to the priest, and then offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded as proof to the authorities." |
Yet he went out and began to proclaim it widely and to spread the news, with the result that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly. But he was out in deserted places, and they came to him from everywhere. | 45But when the man left, he began to proclaim it freely. He spread the news so widely that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly, but had to stay out in deserted places. Still, people kept coming to him from everywhere. |
