1 וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass) בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה (in the year), הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗ית (seventh) בַּֽחֲמִשִׁי֙ (in the fifth) בֶּעָשׂ֣וֹר (on the tenth) לַחֹ֔דֶשׁ (of the month), בָּ֧אוּ (that came) אֲנָשִׁ֛ים (men) מִזִּקְנֵ֥י (from the elders) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) לִדְרֹ֣שׁ (to inquire) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ (and they sat) לְפָנָֽי׃ס (before me).

2 וַיְהִ֥י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 3 בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֗ם (of man), דַּבֵּ֞ר (speak) אֶת־ (-) זִקְנֵ֤י (to the elders) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and say) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them) כֹּ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH) הֲלִדְרֹ֥שׁ (to inquire) אֹתִ֖י (of Me) אַתֶּ֣ם (you⁺) בָּאִ֑ים (have come) חַי־ (As live), אָ֙נִי֙ (I) אִם־ (if) אִדָּרֵ֣שׁ (I will be inquired of) לָכֶ֔ם (by you⁺) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH).

4 הֲתִשְׁפֹּ֣ט (Will you judge) אֹתָ֔ם (them) הֲתִשְׁפּ֖וֹט (Will you judge them) בֶּן־ (son) אָדָ֑ם (of man), אֶת־ (-) תּוֹעֲבֹ֥ת (the abominations) אֲבוֹתָ֖ם (of their fathers); הוֹדִיעֵֽם׃ (make known to them). 5 וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (And say) אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (to them) כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַר֮ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִה֒ (YHWH); בְּיוֹם֙ (On the day) בָּחֳרִ֣י (of my choosing) בְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), וָאֶשָּׂ֣א (and lifted) יָדִ֗י (My hand) לְזֶ֙רַע֙ (to the seed) בֵּ֣ית (of the house) יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב (of Jacob), וָאִוָּדַ֥ע (and I made Myself known) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), וָאֶשָּׂ֨א (and did I lift) יָדִ֤י (My hand) לָהֶם֙ (to them) לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

6 בַּיּ֣וֹם (On the day) הַה֗וּא (that) נָשָׂ֤אתִי (I lifted) יָדִי֙ (My hand) לָהֶ֔ם (to them) לְהֽוֹצִיאָ֖ם (to bring them out) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt) אֶל־ (into) אֶ֜רֶץ (a land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) תַּ֣רְתִּי (I had searched out) לָהֶ֗ם (for them) זָבַ֤ת (flowing) חָלָב֙ (with milk) וּדְבַ֔שׁ (and honey), צְבִ֥י (the glory) הִ֖יא (it is) לְכָל־ (of all) הָאֲרָצֽוֹת׃ (the lands). 7 וָאֹמַ֣ר (And I said) אֲלֵהֶ֗ם (to them) אִ֣ישׁ (Each man) שִׁקּוּצֵ֤י (the abominations) עֵינָיו֙ (before his eyes), הַשְׁלִ֔יכוּ (must throw away) וּבְגִלּוּלֵ֥י (and with the idols) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt); אַל־ (not) תִּטַּמָּ֑אוּ (shall you⁺ defile yourselves) אֲנִ֖י (I am) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

8 וַיַּמְרוּ־ (And they rebelled) בִ֗י (against Me) וְלֹ֤א (and not) אָבוּ֙ (were they willing) לִּשְׁמֹ֣עַ (to listen) אֵלַ֔י (to Me) אִ֣ישׁ (Each man) אֶת־ (-) שִׁקּוּצֵ֤י (the abominations that were) עֵֽינֵיהֶם֙ (before their eyes), לֹ֣א (not) הִשְׁלִ֔יכוּ (they did cast away) וְאֶת־ (and) גִּלּוּלֵ֥י (the idols) מִצְרַ֖יִם (of Egypt). לֹ֣א (Not) עָזָ֑בוּ (did they forsake) וָאֹמַ֞ר (and I said), לִשְׁפֹּ֧ךְ (I will pour out) חֲמָתִ֣י (My fury) עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (upon them) לְכַלּ֤וֹת (to complete) אַפִּי֙ (My anger) בָּהֶ֔ם (against them) בְּת֖וֹךְ (in the midst) אֶ֥רֶץ (of the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt). 9 וָאַ֙עַשׂ֙ (And I acted) לְמַ֣עַן (for the sake) שְׁמִ֔י (of My name) לְבִלְתִּ֥י (for it not) הֵחֵ֛ל (to be profaned) לְעֵינֵ֥י (before the eyes) הַגּוֹיִ֖ם (of the nations), אֲשֶׁר־ (of whom) הֵ֣מָּה (they were) בְתוֹכָ֑ם (in the midst) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) נוֹדַ֤עְתִּי (I had made Myself known) אֲלֵיהֶם֙ (to them) לְעֵ֣ינֵיהֶ֔ם (before their eyes) לְהוֹצִיאָ֖ם (to bring them out) מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָֽיִם׃ (of Egypt).

Israel’s Rebellion in the Wilderness

10 וָאֽוֹצִיאֵ֖ם (And I brought them out) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), וָאֲבִאֵ֖ם (and I brought them in) אֶל־ (to) הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (the wilderness). 11 וָאֶתֵּ֤ן (And I gave) לָהֶם֙ (to them) אֶת־ (-) חֻקּוֹתַ֔י (My statutes), וְאֶת־ (and) מִשְׁפָּטַ֖י (My judgments), הוֹדַ֣עְתִּי (I made known to) אוֹתָ֑ם (them) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (which) יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה (shall do) אוֹתָ֛ם (them) הָאָדָ֖ם (the man) וָחַ֥י (and he will live) בָּהֶֽם׃ (by them). 12 וְגַ֤ם (And also) אֶת־ (-) שַׁבְּתוֹתַי֙ (My Sabbaths), נָתַ֣תִּי (I gave) לָהֶ֔ם (to them) לִהְי֣וֹת (to be) לְא֔וֹת (as a sign) בֵּינִ֖י (between Me) וּבֵֽינֵיהֶ֑ם (and between them) לָדַ֕עַת (that they might know) כִּ֛י (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) מְקַדְּשָֽׁם׃ (the One sanctifying them).

13 וַיַּמְרוּ־ (And rebelled) בִ֨י (against Me) בֵֽית־ (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel) בַּמִּדְבָּ֗ר (in the wilderness). בְּחֻקּוֹתַ֨י (In My statutes), לֹא־ (not) הָלָ֜כוּ (they did walk) וְאֶת־ (and) מִשְׁפָּטַ֣י (My judgments), מָאָ֗סוּ (they rejected) אֲשֶׁר֩ (which) יַעֲשֶׂ֨ה (shall do) אֹתָ֤ם (them) הָֽאָדָם֙ (the man) וָחַ֣י (and he will live) בָּהֶ֔ם (by them) וְאֶת־ (and) שַׁבְּתֹתַ֖י (My Sabbaths) חִלְּל֣וּ (they defiled). מְאֹ֑ד (Greatly) וָאֹמַ֞ר (and I said), לִשְׁפֹּ֨ךְ (I am going to pour out) חֲמָתִ֧י (My fury) עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם (on them) בַּמִּדְבָּ֖ר (in the wilderness), לְכַלּוֹתָֽם׃ (to put an end to them). 14 וָאֶעֱשֶׂ֖ה (And I acted) לְמַ֣עַן (for the sake) שְׁמִ֑י (of My name) לְבִלְתִּ֤י (for it not) הֵחֵל֙ (to be profaned) לְעֵינֵ֣י (before the eyes) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (of the nations), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) הוֹצֵאתִ֖ים (I had brought them out) לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃ (before their eyes).

15 וְגַם־ (And also) אֲנִ֗י (I) נָשָׂ֧אתִי (lifted) יָדִ֛י (My hand) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness), לְבִלְתִּי֩ (not) הָבִ֨יא (to bring) אוֹתָ֜ם (them) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֣רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֗תִּי (I had given) זָבַ֤ת (flowing) חָלָב֙ (with milk) וּדְבַ֔שׁ (and honey), צְבִ֥י (the glory) הִ֖יא (it is) לְכָל־ (of all) הָאֲרָצֽוֹת׃ (the lands); 16 יַ֜עַן (because) בְּמִשְׁפָּטַ֣י (My ordinances), מָאָ֗סוּ (they rejected) וְאֶת־ (and) חֻקּוֹתַי֙ (My statutes), לֹא־ (not) הָלְכ֣וּ (did they walk) בָהֶ֔ם (in them) וְאֶת־ (and) שַׁבְּתוֹתַ֖י (My Sabbaths), חִלֵּ֑לוּ (they profaned) כִּ֛י (for) אַחֲרֵ֥י (after) גִלּוּלֵיהֶ֖ם (their idols) לִבָּ֥ם (their heart) הֹלֵֽךְ׃ (was walking). 17 וַתָּ֧חָס (And showed pity) עֵינִ֛י (My eye) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (to them) מִֽשַּׁחֲתָ֑ם (from destroying them) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) עָשִׂ֧יתִי (I did make) אוֹתָ֛ם (of them) כָּלָ֖ה (an complete end) בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (in the wilderness).

18 וָאֹמַ֤ר (And I said) אֶל־ (to) בְּנֵיהֶם֙ (their sons) בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר (in the wilderness), בְּחוּקֵּ֤י (In the statutes) אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ (of your⁺ fathers), אַל־ (not) תֵּלֵ֔כוּ (shall you⁺ walk) וְאֶת־ (and) מִשְׁפְּטֵיהֶ֖ם (their ordinances), אַל־ (not) תִּשְׁמֹ֑רוּ (shall you⁺ keep) וּבְגִלּוּלֵיהֶ֖ם (and with their idols) אַל־ (not) תִּטַּמָּֽאוּ׃ (shall you⁺ defile yourselves). 19 אֲנִי֙ (I am) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ God); בְּחֻקּוֹתַ֖י (in My statutes), לֵ֑כוּ (you must walk) וְאֶת־ (and) מִשְׁפָּטַ֥י (My ordinances), שִׁמְר֖וּ (you must keep) וַעֲשׂ֥וּ (and do) אוֹתָֽם׃ (them). 20 וְאֶת־ (And) שַׁבְּתוֹתַ֖י (My Sabbaths); קַדֵּ֑שׁוּ (keep holy) וְהָי֤וּ (that they may be) לְאוֹת֙ (as a sign) בֵּינִ֣י (between Me) וּבֵֽינֵיכֶ֔ם (and between you⁺) לָדַ֕עַת (to know) כִּ֛י (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ God).

21 וַיַּמְרוּ־ (And also rebelled) בִ֣י (against Me) הַבָּנִ֗ים (the sons) בְּחֻקּוֹתַ֣י (in My statutes), לֹֽא־ (not) הָ֠לָכוּ (did they walk) וְאֶת־ (and) מִשְׁפָּטַ֨י (My judgments) לֹא־ (not) שָׁמְר֜וּ (keep) לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת (to do) אוֹתָ֗ם (them) אֲשֶׁר֩ (which) יַעֲשֶׂ֨ה (shall do) אוֹתָ֤ם (them) הָֽאָדָם֙ (a man) וָחַ֣י (and he will live) בָּהֶ֔ם (by them) אֶת־ (-) שַׁבְּתוֹתַ֖י (My Sabbaths). חִלֵּ֑לוּ (They profaned) וָאֹמַ֞ר (and I said), לִשְׁפֹּ֧ךְ (to pour out) חֲמָתִ֣י (My fury) עֲלֵיהֶ֗ם (on them) לְכַלּ֥וֹת (to accomplish) אַפִּ֛י (My anger) בָּ֖ם (against them) בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃ (in the wilderness). 22 וַהֲשִׁבֹ֙תִי֙ (And I turned back) אֶת־ (-) יָדִ֔י (My hand), וָאַ֖עַשׂ (and acted) לְמַ֣עַן (for the sake) שְׁמִ֑י (of My name) לְבִלְתִּ֤י (not) הֵחֵל֙ (to be profaned) לְעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (of the nations), אֲשֶׁר־ (who) הוֹצֵ֥אתִי (I had brought out) אוֹתָ֖ם (them) לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃ (before their eyes).

23 גַּם־ (Also) אֲנִ֗י (I) נָשָׂ֧אתִי (I have lifted up) אֶת־ (-) יָדִ֛י (My hand) לָהֶ֖ם (to them) בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר (in the wilderness), לְהָפִ֤יץ (to scatter) אֹתָם֙ (them) בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם (among the nations), וּלְזָר֥וֹת (and to scatter) אוֹתָ֖ם (them) בָּאֲרָצֽוֹת׃ (among the lands); 24 יַ֜עַן (because) מִשְׁפָּטַ֤י (My ordinances), לֹֽא־ (not) עָשׂוּ֙ (they had done) וְחֻקּוֹתַ֣י (and My statutes), מָאָ֔סוּ (they had rejected) וְאֶת־ (and) שַׁבְּתוֹתַ֖י (My Sabbaths), חִלֵּ֑לוּ (they had profaned) וְאַחֲרֵי֙ (and after) גִּלּוּלֵ֣י (the idols). אֲבוֹתָ֔ם (Of their fathers) הָי֖וּ (were) עֵינֵיהֶֽם׃ (their eyes).

25 וְגַם־ (And also) אֲנִי֙ (I) נָתַ֣תִּי (gave) לָהֶ֔ם (to them) חֻקִּ֖ים (statutes) לֹ֣א (not) טוֹבִ֑ים (good), וּמִ֨שְׁפָּטִ֔ים (and ordinances) לֹ֥א (they could not) יִֽחְי֖וּ (live); בָּהֶֽם׃ (by which). 26 וָאֲטַמֵּ֤א (And I made unclean) אוֹתָם֙ (them) בְּמַתְּנוֹתָ֔ם (through their gifts), בְּהַעֲבִ֖יר (in making pass through) כָּל־ (all) פֶּ֣טֶר (-) רָ֑חַם (their firstborn), לְמַ֣עַן (so that) אֲשִׁמֵּ֔ם (I might make them desolate), לְמַ֙עַן֙ (so) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) יֵֽדְע֔וּ (they would know) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ס (YHWH).

Israel’s Rebellion in the Land

27 לָכֵ֞ן (Therefore), דַּבֵּ֨ר (speak) אֶל־ (to) בֵּ֤ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), בֶּן־ (son) אָדָ֔ם (of man), וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ (and say) אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (to them) כֹּ֥ה (thus) אָמַ֖ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֑ה (YHWH); ע֗וֹד (Also) זֹ֚את (in this) גִּדְּפ֤וּ (did blaspheme) אוֹתִי֙ (Me) אֲב֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ fathers) בְּמַעֲלָ֥ם (in their being unfaithful) בִּ֖י (to Me) מָֽעַל׃ (in unfaithfulness). 28 וָאֲבִיאֵם֙ (And I brought them) אֶל־ (into) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the land), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) נָשָׂ֙אתִי֙ (I had lifted up) אֶת־ (-) יָדִ֔י (My hand) לָתֵ֥ת (to give) אוֹתָ֖הּ (it) לָהֶ֑ם (to them) וַיִּרְאוּ֩ (and they saw) כָל־ (all) גִּבְעָ֨ה (the hills), רָמָ֜ה (high) וְכָל־ (and every) עֵ֣ץ (tree), עָבֹ֗ת (leafy) וַיִּזְבְּחוּ־ (and they offered) שָׁ֤ם (there) אֶת־ (-) זִבְחֵיהֶם֙ (their sacrifices), וַיִּתְּנוּ־ (and) שָׁם֙ (there was) כַּ֣עַס (provocation) קָרְבָּנָ֔ם (by their offerings). וַיָּשִׂ֣ימוּ (And they sent up) שָׁ֗ם (there) רֵ֚יחַ (aroma), נִיח֣וֹחֵיהֶ֔ם (their pleasing) וַיַּסִּ֥יכוּ (and poured out) שָׁ֖ם (there) אֶת־ (-) נִסְכֵּיהֶֽם׃ (their drink offerings). 29 וָאֹמַ֣ר (And I said) אֲלֵהֶ֔ם (to them) מָ֣ה (What is) הַבָּמָ֔ה (this high place) אֲשֶׁר־ (to which) אַתֶּ֥ם (you⁺) הַבָּאִ֖ים (are going)? שָׁ֑ם (There)

וַיִּקָּרֵ֤א (and is called) שְׁמָהּ֙ (its name) בָּמָ֔ה (Bamah) עַ֖ד (to) הַיּ֥וֹם (the day) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

30 לָכֵ֞ן (Therefore) אֱמֹ֣ר׀ (say) אֶל־ (to) בֵּ֣ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), כֹּ֤ה (thus) אָמַר֙ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH); הַבְּדֶ֥רֶךְ (In the way) אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ fathers)? אַתֶּ֣ם (You⁺) נִטְמְאִ֑ים (will be defiling yourselves) וְאַחֲרֵ֥י (and after) שִׁקּוּצֵיהֶ֖ם (their abominations)? אַתֶּ֥ם (Yourselves) זֹנִֽים׃ (prostituting). 31 וּבִשְׂאֵ֣ת (And for in your lifting up) מַתְּנֹֽתֵיכֶ֡ם (your⁺ gifts), בְּֽהַעֲבִיר֩ (and making pass) בְּנֵיכֶ֨ם (your⁺ sons) בָּאֵ֜שׁ (through the fire), אַתֶּם֩ (you⁺) נִטְמְאִ֤֨ים (are defile yourselves) לְכָל־ (with all) גִּלּֽוּלֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ idols), עַד־ (even to) הַיּ֔וֹם (this day). וַאֲנִ֛י (And I) אִדָּרֵ֥שׁ (shall be consulted) לָכֶ֖ם (by you⁺) בֵּ֣ית (O house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel)? חַי־ (As live), אָ֗נִי (I) נְאֻם֙ (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֣י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH), אִם־ (if) אִדָּרֵ֖שׁ (I will be consulted) לָכֶֽם׃ (by you⁺).

32 וְהָֽעֹלָה֙ (And the thing coming up) עַל־ (upon) ר֣וּחֲכֶ֔ם (your⁺ mind) הָי֖וֹ (being), לֹ֣א (never) תִֽהְיֶ֑ה (shall be), אֲשֶׁ֣ר׀ (that) אַתֶּ֣ם (you⁺) אֹמְרִ֗ים (say), נִֽהְיֶ֤ה (let us become) כַגּוֹיִם֙ (like the nations), כְּמִשְׁפְּח֣וֹת (like the tribes) הָאֲרָצ֔וֹת (of the lands), לְשָׁרֵ֖ת (ministering) עֵ֥ץ (to wood) וָאָֽבֶן׃ (and stone).

Judgment and Restoration

33 חַי־ (As live), אָ֕נִי (I) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֣י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֑ה (YHWH), אִם־ (if) לֹ֠א (not) בְּיָ֨ד (with a hand), חֲזָקָ֜ה (mighty) וּבִזְר֧וֹעַ (and with an arm), נְטוּיָ֛ה (outstretched) וּבְחֵמָ֥ה (and with fury) שְׁפוּכָ֖ה (poured out), אֶמְל֥וֹךְ (I will rule) עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃ (over you⁺). 34 וְהוֹצֵאתִ֤י (And I will bring out) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) מִן־ (from) הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים (the peoples), וְקִבַּצְתִּ֣י (and I will gather) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) מִן־ (from) הָ֣אֲרָצ֔וֹת (the lands) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (to which) נְפוֹצֹתֶ֖ם (you⁺ have been scattered), בָּ֑ם (in them) בְּיָ֤ד (with a hand), חֲזָקָה֙ (mighty) וּבִזְר֣וֹעַ (and with an arm), נְטוּיָ֔ה (outstretched) וּבְחֵמָ֖ה (and with fury) שְׁפוּכָֽה׃ (poured out). 35 וְהֵבֵאתִ֣י (And I will bring) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) אֶל־ (into) מִדְבַּ֖ר (the wilderness) הָֽעַמִּ֑ים (of the peoples), וְנִשְׁפַּטְתִּ֤י (and I will enter into judgment) אִתְּכֶם֙ (with you⁺) שָׁ֔ם (there) פָּנִ֖ים (face) אֶל־ (to) פָּנִֽים׃ (face).

36 כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר (As) נִשְׁפַּ֙טְתִּי֙ (I entered into judgment) אֶת־ (with) אֲב֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ fathers) בְּמִדְבַּ֖ר (in the wilderness) אֶ֣רֶץ (of the land) מִצְרָ֑יִם (of Egypt), כֵּ֚ן (so) אִשָּׁפֵ֣ט (I will enter into judgment) אִתְּכֶ֔ם (with you⁺) נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃ (YHWH). 37 וְהַעֲבַרְתִּ֥י (And I will make pass) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) תַּ֣חַת (under) הַשָּׁ֑בֶט (the rod), וְהֵבֵאתִ֥י (and I will bring) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) בְּמָסֹ֥רֶת (into the bond) הַבְּרִֽית׃ (of the covenant); 38 וּבָרוֹתִ֣י (and I will purge) מִכֶּ֗ם (from among you⁺) הַמֹּרְדִ֤ים (the rebels), וְהַפּֽוֹשְׁעִים֙ (and those transgressing) בִּ֔י (against Me) מֵאֶ֤רֶץ (from the land) מְגֽוּרֵיהֶם֙ (of their sojourning), אוֹצִ֣יא (I will bring out) אוֹתָ֔ם (them) וְאֶל־ (and into) אַדְמַ֥ת (the land) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel). לֹ֣א (Not) יָב֑וֹא (they will come) וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם (and you⁺ will know) כִּי־ (that) אֲנִ֥י (I am) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

39 וְאַתֶּ֨ם (And you⁺), בֵּֽית־ (O house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל (of Israel), כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַ֣ר׀ (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהֹוִ֗ה (YHWH); אִ֤ישׁ (each man) גִּלּוּלָיו֙ (his idols), לְכ֣וּ (let go) עֲבֹ֔דוּ (and serve) וְאַחַ֕ר (and afterward) אִם־ (if) אֵינְכֶ֖ם (you⁺ not) שֹׁמְעִ֣ים (are listening) אֵלָ֑י (to Me) וְאֶת־ (and) שֵׁ֤ם (the name) קָדְשִׁי֙ (of My holiness) לֹ֣א (not) תְחַלְּלוּ־ (will you⁺ profane) ע֔וֹד (anymore) בְּמַתְּנֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (with your⁺ gifts), וּבְגִלּוּלֵיכֶֽם׃ (and with your⁺ idols).

40 כִּ֣י (For) בְהַר־ (on the mountain), קָדְשִׁ֞י (of My holiness) בְּהַ֣ר׀ (on the mountain) מְר֣וֹם (of the height) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), נְאֻם֙ (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֣י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֔ה (YHWH), שָׁ֣ם (there) יַעַבְדֻ֜נִי (they will serve Me) כָּל־ (all) בֵּ֧ית (the house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel), כֻּלֹּ֖ה (all of them) בָּאָ֑רֶץ (in the land), שָׁ֣ם (there) אֶרְצֵ֔ם (I will accept them) וְשָׁ֞ם (and there) אֶדְר֣וֹשׁ (I will seek out) אֶת־ (-) תְּרוּמֹֽתֵיכֶ֗ם (your⁺ contributions), וְאֶת־ (and) רֵאשִׁ֛ית (the firstfruits) מַשְׂאוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (of your⁺ sacrifices), בְּכָל־ (with all) קָדְשֵׁיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ holy things). 41 בְּרֵ֣יחַ (With an aroma),

נִיחֹחַ֮ (pleasing) אֶרְצֶ֣ה (I will accept) אֶתְכֶם֒ (you⁺) בְּהוֹצִיאִ֤י (in My bringing out) אֶתְכֶם֙ (you⁺) מִן־ (from) הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים (the peoples), וְקִבַּצְתִּ֣י (and I gather) אֶתְכֶ֔ם (you⁺) מִן־ (from) הָ֣אֲרָצ֔וֹת (the lands) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (to which) נְפֹצֹתֶ֖ם (you⁺ have been scattered); בָּ֑ם (in them) וְנִקְדַּשְׁתִּ֥י (and I will show My holiness) בָכֶ֖ם (in you⁺) לְעֵינֵ֥י (before the eyes) הַגּוֹיִֽם׃ (of the nations). 42 וִֽידַעְתֶּם֙ (And you⁺ will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֣י (I am) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), בַּהֲבִיאִ֥י (in My bringing) אֶתְכֶ֖ם (you⁺) אֶל־ (to) אַדְמַ֣ת (the land) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), אֶל־ (to) הָאָ֗רֶץ (the land) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) נָשָׂ֙אתִי֙ (I lifted) אֶת־ (-) יָדִ֔י (My hand) לָתֵ֥ת (to give) אוֹתָ֖הּ (it) לַאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶֽם׃ (to your⁺ fathers).

43 וּזְכַרְתֶּם־ (And you⁺ will remember) שָׁ֗ם (there) אֶת־ (-) דַּרְכֵיכֶם֙ (your⁺ ways), וְאֵת֙ (and) כָּל־ (all) עֲלִיל֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם (your⁺ deeds), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (with which) נִטְמֵאתֶ֖ם (you⁺ defiled yourselves); בָּ֑ם (in them) וּנְקֹֽטֹתֶם֙ (and you⁺ will be loathsome) בִּפְנֵיכֶ֔ם (in your⁺ own sight) בְּכָל־ (for all) רָעוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם (the evils) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עֲשִׂיתֶֽם׃ (you⁺ have done). 44 וִֽידַעְתֶּם֙ (And you⁺ will know) כִּֽי־ (that) אֲנִ֣י (I am) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), בַּעֲשׂוֹתִ֥י (in my dealing) אִתְּכֶ֖ם (with you⁺) לְמַ֣עַן (for the sake) שְׁמִ֑י (of My name) לֹא֩ (not) כְדַרְכֵיכֶ֨ם (according to your⁺ ways), הָרָעִ֜ים (evil) וְכַעֲלִילֽוֹתֵיכֶ֤ם (and not according to your⁺ deeds), הַנִּשְׁחָתוֹת֙ (and corrupt) בֵּ֣ית (O house) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel), נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִֽה׃פ (YHWH).

A Prophecy against the South

45 וַיְהִ֥י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלַ֥י (to me) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 46 בֶּן־ (Son) אָדָ֗ם (of man), שִׂ֤ים (set) פָּנֶ֙יךָ֙ (your face) דֶּ֣רֶךְ (to the way) תֵּימָ֔נָה (of Teman), וְהַטֵּ֖ף (and preach) אֶל־ (against) דָּר֑וֹם (the south), וְהִנָּבֵ֛א (and prophesy) אֶל־ (against) יַ֥עַר (the forest) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (of the land); נֶֽגֶב׃ (of the Negev). 47 וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ (And say) לְיַ֣עַר (to the forest) הַנֶּ֔גֶב (of the Negev), שְׁמַ֖ע (Hear) דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH); כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֣י (the Lord) יְהוִ֡ה (YHWH); הִנְנִ֣י (behold, I) מַֽצִּית־ (am going to kindle) בְּךָ֣׀ (in you) אֵ֡שׁ (a fire) וְאָכְלָ֣ה (and it will devour) בְךָ֣ (in you) כָל־ (every) עֵֽץ־ (tree) לַח֩ (moist) וְכָל־ (and every) עֵ֨ץ (tree); יָבֵ֤שׁ (dry) לֹֽא־ (not) תִכְבֶּה֙ (will be quenched), לַהֶ֣בֶת (the flame) שַׁלְהֶ֔בֶת (blazing) וְנִצְרְבוּ־ (and will be scorched) בָ֥הּ (by it) כָּל־ (all) פָּנִ֖ים (faces) מִנֶּ֥גֶב (from the south) צָפֽוֹנָה׃ (to the north). 48 וְרָאוּ֙ (And will see) כָּל־ (all) בָּשָׂ֔ר (flesh) כִּ֛י (that) אֲנִ֥י (I) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בִּֽעַרְתִּ֑יהָ (have kindled it) לֹ֖א (not) תִּכְבֶּֽה׃ (will it be quenched).

49 וָאֹמַ֕ר (And I said) אֲהָ֖הּ (Ah) אֲדֹנָ֣י (Lord) יְהוִ֑ה (YHWH)! הֵ֚מָּה (They) אֹמְרִ֣ים (are saying) לִ֔י (of me) הֲלֹ֛א (Is not) מְמַשֵּׁ֥ל (one telling) מְשָׁלִ֖ים (parables)? הֽוּא׃פ (He).
