Clap Your Hands, All You Peoples

A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

2Ki 11:12 Then Jehoiada brought out the king’s son,…
Isa 55:12 You will indeed go out with joy and be led forth in peace;…

shout unto God with a voice of triumph.

Loud celebration fittingly answers God’s victories and sovereign power over the earth.

Psa 81:1 For the choirmaster. According to Gittith. Of Asaph.…
Exo 15:1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD:…

How awesome is the LORD Most High,

God’s holiness, majesty, and power rightly inspire reverent fear. He is not one deity among many but the sovereign Creator, exalted above every ruler, nation, and false god.

Psa 83:18 May they know that You alone, whose name is the LORD,…
Deu 10:17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords,…

the great King over all the earth!

His reign extends beyond Israel to every land and people. Earthly kings exercise temporary and limited authority, but the LORD rules with absolute power and justice over all creation.

Psa 95:3 For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods.
Zec 14:9 On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—…

He subdues nations beneath us,

God gave Israel victory over hostile peoples as He established them in the land promised to Abraham’s descendants. From the conquest under Joshua to later deliverances during the period of the judges and the reigns of David and Solomon, Israel’s security depended on the Lord’s power rather than military strength alone. The words also affirm God’s rule over every kingdom and nation.

Psa 144:2 He is my steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold…
Psa 18:47 the God who avenges me and subdues nations beneath me,
2Sa 22:48 the God who avenges me and brings down nations beneath me,

and peoples under our feet.

The image portrays decisive defeat, like the ancient practice of a victorious king placing his foot upon a conquered enemy. God had promised to restrain Israel’s enemies and establish David’s kingdom. Ultimately, all rebellion against God will be brought under the reign of Christ, whose victory over sin, death, and every opposing power is complete.

Psa 8:6 You made him ruler of the works of Your hands;…
1Co 15:27 “God has put everything under His feet.”…
Psa 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD said to my Lord:…

He chooses our inheritance for us,

God determined the portion of land Israel would receive after bringing them into Canaan, fulfilling His covenant promises to the patriarchs. Israel’s possession was not gained merely by military strength but granted by the Lord, who rules the nations and assigns their boundaries.

Psa 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,…
Deu 32:8-9 When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance,…
Num 26:55-56 Indeed, the land must be divided by lot;…

the pride of Jacob,

The promised land was Israel’s glory, the inheritance of Jacob’s descendants and the visible evidence of God’s favor. Though Israel often failed in faithfulness, the land remained bound to God’s covenant purpose for the nation.

Amo 6:8 The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself—the LORD, the God of Hosts…
Psa 135:4 For the LORD has chosen Jacob as His own,…
Deu 33:29 Blessed are you, O Israel! Who is like you?…

whom He loves.

God’s choice of Israel rested on His covenant love and faithfulness. His care for Jacob’s descendants demonstrates that His promises are governed by His own character and will.

Mal 1:2 “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask……
Deu 7:7-8 The LORD did not set His affection on you and choose you…
Jer 31:3 The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying:…

Selah

The pause calls for reflection on God’s sovereign rule, His covenant faithfulness, and the inheritance He gives to His people.

Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.…
Hab 3:9 You brandished Your bow; You called for many arrows.…
Hab 3:13 You went forth for the salvation of Your people…

God has ascended amid shouts of joy,

God is pictured as the victorious King returning to His throne amid the rejoicing of His people. The celebration reflects His rule over the nations and His triumph on behalf of Israel. It also foreshadows Christ’s ascension into heaven after completing His earthly work.

Psa 68:18 You have ascended on high; You have led captives away.…
Eph 4:8-10 This is why it says: “When He ascended on high,…
Act 1:9-11 He had said this, they watched as He was taken up…

the LORD with the sound of the horn.

The blast of the shofar announces the presence and kingship of Yahweh, as it did in Israel’s worship, festivals, and royal celebrations. God’s enthronement is publicly proclaimed, anticipating the trumpet that will accompany Christ’s return.

1Ch 15:28 So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD…
2Sa 6:15 while he and all the house of Israel brought up the ark…
Psa 98:6 With trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn shout for joy…

Sing praises to God, sing praises;

Israel worshiped the Lord as the sovereign God who had delivered, preserved, and ruled His people. Repeated praise expresses wholehearted devotion and the united worship of the congregation.

Psa 95:1-2 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout…
Psa 96:1-2 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD…
Psa 100:1-2 A Psalm of thanksgiving. Make a joyful noise to the LORD,…

sing praises to our King,

God was not merely a national symbol but Israel’s true King, whose authority stood above every earthly ruler. His people owed Him reverence, loyalty, and obedience.

Psa 145:1-3 A Psalm of praise. Of David. I will exalt You,…
Psa 98:6 With trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn shout for joy…
Psa 24:7-10 Lift up your heads, O gates! Be lifted up, O ancient doors,…

sing praises!

The closing command calls for continuing, joyful worship. Praise belongs to God because of His reign and His faithful works among His people.

Psa 68:4 Sing to God! Sing praises to His name. Exalt Him…
Psa 147:1 Hallelujah! How good it is to sing praises to our God…
Psa 149:1 Hallelujah! Sing to the LORD a new song—…

For God is King of all the earth;

God’s rule extends beyond Israel to every nation, people, and part of creation. In a world shaped by many local gods and competing powers, Israel confessed that the LORD alone possesses universal authority. His kingship establishes the certainty of His purposes and the accountability of all peoples before Him.

Zec 14:9 On that day the LORD will become King over all the earth—…
Psa 97:1 The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice;…
Psa 93:1 The LORD reigns! He is robed in majesty;…

sing to Him a psalm of praise.

Worship rightly answers the reign of God. Israel’s songs proclaimed His works, trusted His rule, and united the congregation in reverence before their King. Praise was not limited to times of peace or prosperity but expressed confidence in God’s unchanging authority.

Psa 95:1 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout…
Psa 96:1 Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD…
Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you…

God reigns over the nations;

God’s authority extends over every people, kingdom, and ruler, not Israel alone. In a world where surrounding nations treated their gods as limited to particular lands, Israel confessed that the Lord governs all the earth and directs the course of history. His rule anticipates the gathering of people from every nation under His kingdom.

Psa 22:28 For dominion belongs to the LORD, and He rules…
Psa 99:1 The LORD reigns; let the nations tremble!…
Psa 103:19 The LORD has established His throne in heaven…

God is seated on His holy throne.

God rules with absolute authority, righteousness, and holiness. Unlike earthly kings, whose power is often marked by injustice or corruption, His judgments are pure and His reign is unshakable. The throne portrays His exalted position over creation and points forward to Christ’s present reign at the Father’s right hand and the final establishment of God’s kingdom.

Psa 11:4 The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD is on His throne…
Dan 7:9 As I continued to watch, thrones were set in place,…
Psa 9:7 But the LORD abides forever; He has established His throne…

The nobles of the nations have assembled

Earthly rulers and peoples are pictured gathering in acknowledgment of the Lord’s rule. What was often expressed through political or military assemblies becomes an image of the nations submitting to the true King.

Isa 49:7 Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel,…
Isa 60:3 Nations will come to your light, and kings…
Psa 72:11 May all kings bow down to him and all nations serve him.

as the people of the God of Abraham;

The God who called Abraham and promised blessing to all nations is worshiped by people beyond Israel. His covenant purposes extend to all who belong to Him through faith.

Exo 3:6 Then He said, “I am the God of your father,”…
Gen 17:7 I will establish My covenant as an everlasting covenant…
Gal 3:29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed…

for the shields of the earth belong to God;

Kings, armies, and every source of national security remain under God’s authority. No power can stand independently of His will.

Psa 89:18 Surely our shield belongs to the LORD…
1Ch 29:11 Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power…
Dan 4:17 This decision is the decree of the watchers,…

He is highly exalted.

God reigns above every ruler and nation, worthy of universal honor and submission.

Exo 15:1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD:…
Psa 97:9 For You, O LORD, are Most High over all the earth;…
Isa 57:15 For thus says the One who is high and lifted up…
