Jeremiah Taken to Egypt

When Jeremiah had finished telling all the people

Jeremiah had faithfully delivered God’s answer to the remnant of Judah after they sought counsel about whether to remain in the land or go to Egypt. Though he knew his message would be unwelcome, he withheld nothing.

Jer 26:8 and as soon as he had finished telling all the people…
Jos 8:35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded…

all the words of the LORD their God—

Jeremiah spoke with divine authority, not personal opinion. The LORD remained the God of this frightened remnant, bound to them by covenant even after Jerusalem’s fall.

Jer 36:2 Take a scroll and write on it all the words I have spoken…
Jer 26:2 This is what the LORD says: Stand in the courtyard…

everything that the LORD had sent him to say—

God’s instruction was fully conveyed: the people were to stay in Judah and trust Him rather than flee to Egypt. Their coming response would reveal whether they had truly sought the LORD’s will or only desired His approval of their own plans.

Jer 1:7 But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’…
Ezk 2:7 But speak My words to them, whether they listen…

Azariah son of Hoshaiah,

Azariah, whose name means “Yahweh has helped,” was among the leading men of the remnant in Judah. Though entrusted with influence among the survivors, he joined the rejection of God’s word through Jeremiah.

Jer 42:1 Then all the commanders of the forces, along with Johanan…
Jer 40:8 they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah—Ishmael son of Nethaniah…

Johanan son of Kareah,

Johanan, whose name means “Yahweh is gracious,” had previously warned Gedaliah of danger and helped rescue captives from Ishmael. Yet despite his earlier actions, he now refused to accept the instruction he had specifically sought from the LORD.

Jer 42:2 Jeremiah the prophet and said, “May our petition come…
Jer 41:16 Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders…

and all the arrogant men

The leaders and their supporters responded with pride rather than submission. Their determination to follow their own plan led them to dismiss the prophet’s message.

Jer 5:23-24 But these people have stubborn and rebellious hearts.…
Pro 21:24 Mocker is the name of the proud and arrogant man…

said to Jeremiah,

Jeremiah had faithfully delivered the LORD’s answer after the people promised to obey it. Their response exposed that they had not truly intended to follow God’s direction if it conflicted with their desires.

Jer 26:8-9 and as soon as he had finished telling all the people…
Jer 37:13-14 But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin,…

“You are lying!

They accused Jeremiah of inventing the message because it opposed their plan to flee to Egypt. Rather than admitting their disobedience, they attacked the prophet’s integrity.

Jer 28:15-17 Then the prophet Jeremiah said to the prophet Hananiah,…
Deu 18:20-22 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…

The LORD our God has not sent you

Although they still spoke of the LORD as their God, they denied His authority by refusing the word He had given. Their claim contradicted the promise of obedience they had made.

Jer 14:14-15 “The prophets are prophesying lies in My name,”…
Jer 23:21-22 I did not send these prophets, yet they have run…

to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to reside there.’

Egypt seemed to offer safety from Babylon, but returning there meant rejecting God’s provision in Judah. The remnant chose human security over the command of the LORD.

Jer 42:19 The LORD has told you, O remnant of Judah,…
Deu 17:16 But the king must not acquire many horses for himself…
Isa 30:1-3 “Woe to the rebellious children,” declares the LORD……

Rather, Baruch son of Neriah

Baruch, Jeremiah’s faithful scribe and associate, had recorded the prophet’s messages and remained with him through the crisis. The leaders of the remnant blamed Baruch rather than admitting their refusal to obey the word they had requested from the Lord.

Jer 32:12 I gave this deed to Baruch son of Neriah,…
Jer 36:4 So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah,…

is inciting you against us

They accused Baruch of persuading Jeremiah to oppose them, as though the prophet’s warning came from human influence rather than God. Their charge revealed their determination to reject Jeremiah’s counsel to remain in Judah.

Jer 38:4 Then the officials said to the king, “This man ought to die,…
Jer 37:13-14 But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin,…

to deliver us into the hands of the Chaldeans,

The Chaldeans, or Babylonians, had conquered Judah and destroyed Jerusalem. The people feared that remaining in the land would place them under Babylonian authority, despite Jeremiah’s assurance that the Lord would preserve them if they obeyed.

Jer 21:7 ‘After that,’ declares the LORD, ‘I will hand over……
Jer 32:3-5 For Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him,…

so that they may put us to death

They expected Babylonian officials to punish them for the murder of Gedaliah and their flight from the land. Fear led them to distrust God’s promise and to treat obedience as a path to disaster.

Jer 11:21 Therefore this is what the LORD says…
Jer 21:9 Whoever stays in this city will die by sword and famine…

or exile us to Babylon!”

Deportation to Babylon meant separation from their land and way of life. Yet the exile they feared was the very judgment Judah had already experienced because of long-standing rebellion against the Lord.

2Ki 24:15 Nebuchadnezzar carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon,…
Jer 24:5 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…

So Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces

Johanan and the other military commanders had survived the Babylonian invasion and emerged as leaders among the scattered remnant. After Gedaliah’s assassination, they feared that Babylon would hold them responsible and sought guidance from Jeremiah.

Jer 40:7-8 When all the commanders and men of the armies in the field……
Jer 42:1-3 Then all the commanders of the forces, along with Johanan…
Jer 41:13-14 When all the people with Ishmael saw Johanan son of Kareah…

disobeyed the command of the LORD

Jeremiah had delivered God’s clear instruction that the people were to remain in Judah and not flee to Egypt. Their decision to reject that command revealed that fear of Babylon outweighed their willingness to trust God’s word.

Jer 42:13-17 But if you say, ‘We will not stay in this land,’…
Deu 1:43 So I spoke to you, but you would not listen.…
1Sa 15:22-23 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…

to stay in the land of Judah.

God had promised protection and restoration for the remnant if they remained in Judah, the southern kingdom of Israel and the promised land given to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Leaving Judah for Egypt was not merely a political decision but a deliberate refusal of the direction God had given.

Jer 42:10-12 If you will indeed stay in this land…
Jer 40:9-10 Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan…
Gen 26:2-3 The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down…

Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the forces

Johanan led the Judean military officers after Gedaliah’s murder. Fearing Babylonian retaliation, they rejected Jeremiah’s counsel to remain in Judah and assumed control of the surviving community.

Jer 40:13-16 Meanwhile, Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders…
Jer 42:1-6 Then all the commanders of the forces, along with Johanan…
Jer 41:11-16 When Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders…

took the whole remnant of Judah,

The remnant consisted of Judeans who had survived the Babylonian invasion, deportations, and recent violence. Though small and vulnerable, they remained the people through whom God would preserve Judah.

Jer 39:10 But Nebuzaradan left behind in the land of Judah…
2Ki 25:12 But the captain of the guard left behind some of the poorest…
Jer 41:16-18 Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders…

those who had returned to the land of Judah

Many had come back from places of refuge after Gedaliah was appointed governor at Mizpah. Their return briefly offered stability in the land, but the leaders’ fear soon placed them in further danger.

Jer 40:11-12 When all the Jews in Moab, Ammon, Edom,…
Jer 32:37 I will surely gather My people from all the lands…
Jer 29:14 I will be found by you, declares the LORD, …

from all the nations to which they had been scattered,

The Babylonian conquest had driven Judeans into surrounding regions as well as carried many into exile. Johanan gathered these scattered survivors and led them away from the land God had told them to remain in.

Deu 30:3-4 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion…
Ezk 34:12-13 As a shepherd looks for his scattered sheep…
Isa 11:11-12 On that day the Lord will extend His hand a second time…

the men, the women, the children,

The entire remnant of Judah was drawn into the decision to flee to Egypt, including whole households and those dependent on others for protection.

Deu 31:12 Assemble the people—men, women, children…
Ezr 10:1 While Ezra prayed and made this confession…

the king’s daughters,

Members of the royal family remained among the survivors, showing that the collapse of Jerusalem had reached even the house of David.

2Sa 13:18 So Amnon’s attendant threw her out and bolted the door…
Psa 45:9 The daughters of kings are among your honored women;…
2Ki 24:15 Nebuchadnezzar carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon,…

and everyone whom Nebuzaradan captain of the guard had allowed to remain with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan,

Babylon had left this small population in Judah under Gedaliah’s administration after Jerusalem’s destruction. His murder shattered the stability Babylon had established and drove the remnant to seek safety elsewhere.

2Ki 25:22 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon appointed Gedaliah…
Jer 40:7 When all the commanders and men of the armies in the field……

as well as Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah.

Jeremiah and his faithful scribe Baruch were taken with the people despite Jeremiah’s warning not to go to Egypt. Their presence ensured that God’s word continued to confront Judah’s rebellion in exile.

Jer 45:1 This is the word that Jeremiah the prophet spoke…
Jer 36:4 So Jeremiah called Baruch son of Neriah,…
Jer 36:32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the scribe…

So they entered the land of Egypt

The remnant of Judah returned to the land from which the Lord had delivered Israel in the Exodus. Rather than remaining in Judah under God’s care, they sought safety in Egypt and reversed the direction of Israel’s redemption.

Jer 42:15 then hear the word of the LORD, O remnant of Judah!…
Isa 30:2-3 They set out to go down to Egypt without asking…
Deu 17:16 But the king must not acquire many horses for himself…

because they did not obey the voice of the LORD,

Jeremiah had plainly delivered the Lord’s command not to flee to Egypt. Their departure was a deliberate rejection of God’s word, driven by fear of Babylon and distrust of His protection.

Jer 42:21 For I have told you today, but you have not obeyed…
1Sa 12:15 But if you disobey the LORD and rebel against His command,…
Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…

and they went as far as Tahpanhes.

Tahpanhes was a fortified Egyptian border city in the northeastern Nile Delta, well suited for refugees and military activity. By settling there, the Judean remnant placed itself under Egyptian power and beyond the land where God had commanded them to remain.

Jer 44:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah…
Jer 46:14 Announce it in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol;…
Jer 2:16 The men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have shaved the crown…

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah

God continued to speak through Jeremiah after the remnant fled to Egypt. The message carried divine authority, not Jeremiah’s personal opinion, and showed that Judah could not escape God’s rule by leaving the land He had given them.

Jer 1:4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying:
Jer 7:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD…
Jer 42:7 After ten days the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah,

at Tahpanhes:

Tahpanhes, in the northeastern Nile Delta, was an Egyptian frontier city where Judean refugees sought security after Jerusalem’s fall. Jeremiah’s presence there demonstrated that God’s judgment and His prophetic word extended beyond Judah’s borders, even to those who had rejected His command not to flee to Egypt.

Jer 44:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah…
Jer 46:14 Announce it in Egypt, and proclaim it in Migdol;…
Ezk 30:18 The day will be darkened in Tahpanhes when I break the yoke…

“In the sight of the Jews,

Jeremiah was to perform this sign openly before the Judean refugees who had settled in Egypt against God’s command.

Ezk 12:3-7 Therefore, son of man, pack your bags for exile.…
Jer 19:10-11 Then you are to shatter the jar in the presence of the men…
Jer 32:10-12 I signed and sealed the deed, called in witnesses,…

Jer 2:16 The men of Memphis and Tahpanhes have shaved the crown…

Then tell them that this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:

God speaks with absolute authority as the ruler of heaven and earth and the covenant God of Israel. Jeremiah delivers God’s message, not his own opinion.

Jer 7:3 Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel:…
Jer 25:27 Then you are to tell them that this is what the LORD…

‘I will send for My servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon,

Nebuchadnezzar, Babylon’s powerful king from 605 to 562 BC, would serve God’s purposes despite being a pagan ruler. His military campaigns were under God’s control.

Jer 25:9 behold, I will summon all the families of the north,…
Jer 27:6 So now I have placed all these lands under the authority…

and I will set his throne over these stones that I have embedded,

The stones Jeremiah buried at the entrance to Pharaoh’s palace in Tahpanhes marked the place where Nebuchadnezzar would establish his authority. Egypt, where Judah’s remnant had sought refuge, would not escape Babylon’s advance.

Jer 1:15 For I am about to summon all the clans and kingdoms…
Jer 49:38 I will set My throne in Elam, and destroy its king…

and he will spread his royal pavilion over them.

Nebuchadnezzar’s military pavilion would stand over the stones as a sign of Babylonian occupation and rule. God’s judgment would reach Egypt as He had declared.

Dan 11:45 He will pitch his royal tents between the sea…
Jer 4:20 Disaster after disaster is proclaimed…

He will come and strike down the land of Egypt,

Nebuchadnezzar’s campaign against Egypt extended Babylonian power into the land where Judah’s remnant had sought refuge. Egypt, though long regarded as a secure alternative to submission to Babylon, could not protect itself from the judgment God had declared.

Jer 46:13 This is the word that the LORD spoke to Jeremiah…
Ezk 30:10-12 This is what the Lord GOD says: I will put an end…
Ezk 29:19-20 I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar…

captivity to those destined for captivity,

Egyptians marked for exile would be carried away by the Babylonian forces. Their fate resembled Judah’s captivity, showing that Egypt was not beyond the Lord’s authority.

Rev 13:10 If anyone is destined for captivity, into captivity…
Ezk 12:11 You are to say, ‘I am a sign to you.’ Just as it happened…
Jer 13:19 The cities of the Negev have been shut tight…

and the sword to those destined for the sword.

Others would perish in battle as Babylon’s armies advanced. The sword of Nebuchadnezzar served as God’s instrument of judgment against Egypt’s pride, idolatry, and false security.

Isa 65:12 I will destine you for the sword, and you will all kneel…
Jer 42:16-17 then the sword you fear will overtake you there…
Ezk 21:3-5 This is what the LORD says: ‘I am against you,…

I will kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt,

God announces judgment on Egypt’s idolatrous worship. Its temples, images, and priesthoods could not protect the nation when the Lord brought Babylon against it.

Ezk 30:8 Then they will know that I am the LORD when I set fire…
Ezk 30:13 This is what the Lord GOD says: I will destroy the idols…
Exo 12:12 On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt…

and Nebuchadnezzar will burn those temples and take their gods as captives.

Babylon’s king would serve as God’s instrument, destroying Egypt’s centers of worship and carrying away its idols as spoils of war. The removal of these gods would expose their inability to save their people.

Jer 46:13 This is the word that the LORD spoke to Jeremiah…
Jer 46:25 The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…
Isa 46:1-2 Bel crouches; Nebo cowers. Their idols…

So he will wrap himself with the land of Egypt as a shepherd wraps himself in his garment,

Nebuchadnezzar would take possession of Egypt with the ease of a shepherd putting on his cloak. The image portrays a complete and decisive conquest.

Ezk 29:19-20 I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar…
Jer 27:6-7 So now I have placed all these lands under the authority…
Dan 2:37-38 You, O king, are the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven…

Having accomplished the judgment appointed for him, Nebuchadnezzar would leave Egypt safely, according to God’s purpose.

Ezk 30:24-26 I will strengthen the arms of Babylon’s king…
Jer 46:26 I will deliver them into the hands of those…

He will demolish the sacred pillars

God’s judgment would strike the visible centers of Egypt’s idolatry. These monuments and altars honored gods that could neither protect Egypt nor resist the Lord’s decree.

2Ki 18:4 He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars…
Deu 12:3 Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars,…

of the temple of the sun

This refers to the major Egyptian religious center at Heliopolis, known for devotion to the sun god. Its prominence made its downfall a public demonstration that Egypt’s most revered deities were powerless.

Gen 41:45 Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-paneah,…
Gen 41:50 Before the years of famine arrived, two sons were born…
Ezk 30:17 The young men of On and Pi-beseth will fall by the sword,…

in the land of Egypt,

Egypt, once the place of Israel’s slavery and later the refuge sought by the remnant of Judah, would not escape God’s rule or judgment.

Isa 19:1 This is the burden against Egypt: Behold, the LORD rides…
Ezk 30:13 This is what the Lord GOD says: I will destroy the idols…
Jer 46:25 The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…

and he will burn down the temples of the gods of Egypt.’”

Babylon’s invasion would bring devastation to Egypt’s shrines along with its cities. The destruction of these temples exposed the emptiness of the gods Egypt trusted and fulfilled the Lord’s warning against Judah’s reliance on Egypt.

Exo 12:12 On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt…
2Ki 10:26-27 They brought out the sacred pillar of the temple of Baal…
Deu 7:25 You must burn up the images of their gods; do not covet…
