1 Corinthians 13
Berean Study Bible

Love

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels,

Tongues were a prominent gift in Corinth, and human languages were displayed at Pentecost as the Spirit enabled the apostles to speak languages understood by people from many nations. Paul extends the thought to angelic speech, describing the highest conceivable spiritual expression.

Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit…
Heb 2:2 For if the message spoken by angels was binding,…
Gen 11:1-9 Now the whole world had one language and a common form…

but have not love,

Even the most remarkable gift has no spiritual value when exercised without selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional love (agape) for God and others. Love exposes whether a gift is being used to serve the church or to elevate oneself.

Mat 22:37-40 Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God…
Rom 13:10 Love does no wrong to its neighbor. Therefore love is…
1Jn 4:20-21 If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother,…

I am only a ringing gong or a clanging cymbal.

In a city familiar with noisy pagan worship and public displays, the image conveyed empty sound without lasting worth. Gifts may attract attention, but without love they produce noise rather than edification.

Amo 5:23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs!…
Isa 29:13 Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me…
Jas 1:26 If anyone considers himself religious…

If I have the gift of prophecy

In the early church, prophecy communicated God’s revealed truth for instruction, correction, and encouragement, following the pattern of Old Testament prophets who faithfully delivered God’s word.

Rom 12:6 We have different gifts according to the grace given us.…
1Th 5:20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt,
Act 21:9 He had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.

and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge,

Even complete understanding of God’s revealed purposes and wisdom does not establish a person’s worth before Him. Great knowledge, like Solomon’s wisdom, remains insufficient apart from love.

Col 2:2-3 that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love,…
Dan 2:22 He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows…
Rom 11:33 O, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge…

and if I have absolute faith so as to move mountains,

Such faith trusts God’s power to overcome what seems impossible. Yet even extraordinary faith and miraculous results do not make a person spiritually complete.

Mat 17:20 “Because you have so little faith,” He answered.…
Mat 21:21 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “if you have faith…”…
Mrk 11:23 Truly I tell you that if anyone says to this mountain,…

but have not love,

Love, expressed in agape as selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional, gives proper purpose to every spiritual gift. It seeks the good of others rather than personal recognition and reflects the character God requires of His people.

Rom 13:8-10 Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love.…
Mat 22:37-40 Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God…
1Jn 4:8 Whoever does not love does not know God…

I am nothing.

Gifts, knowledge, and faith without love leave their possessor spiritually empty. No accomplishment can replace love.

2Co 12:11 I have become a fool, but you drove me to it…
Gal 6:3 If anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing…
Jhn 15:5 I am the vine and you are the branches…

If I give all I possess to the poor

Even the complete distribution of one’s wealth, though it relieves real need and appears supremely generous, has no spiritual value when it is driven by pride, duty, or self-interest rather than love.

Mat 19:21 If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions…
Luk 12:33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor.…
2Co 9:9 As it is written: “He has scattered abroad…

and exult in the surrender of my body,

Paul includes the most extreme form of self-sacrifice, whether suffering, death, or martyrdom. Enduring pain for a religious cause does not profit a person if love for God and others is absent.

Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,…
Php 1:20 I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed,…
2Ti 4:6 For I am already being poured out like a drink offering,…

but have not love,

Love must govern every gift, service, sacrifice, and act of obedience. Agape is selfless, unconditional love. Without it, outward devotion can be impressive while the heart remains unchanged.

Mat 22:37-40 Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God…
Jhn 13:34-35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.…
Rom 13:10 Love does no wrong to its neighbor. Therefore love is…

I gain nothing.

No eternal reward or spiritual benefit comes from even the greatest sacrifice when love is lacking. God measures not merely what is given or endured, but the motive from which it comes.

Mat 16:26 What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world…
Php 3:7-8 But whatever was gain to me I count as loss…
Gal 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision……

Love is patient,

Love endures offenses and hardships without resentment or retaliation. God showed such patience with Israel through generations of rebellion, delaying judgment while calling His people to repentance. Christ also bore with the weakness, misunderstanding, and failures of those around Him. Such patience preserves fellowship and refuses to answer injury with injury.

Eph 4:2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience,…
Rom 12:12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction…
Jas 5:7-8 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming…

love is kind.

Love actively seeks the good of others. In Corinth, where status, wealth, and public recognition shaped social relationships, kindness required believers to treat one another with generosity and respect. Jesus demonstrated this care toward the poor, the sick, the outcast, and the repentant.

Eph 4:32 Be kind and tenderhearted to one another,…
Col 3:12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved…
Tit 3:4-5 But when the kindness of God our Savior…

It does not envy,

Love does not resent another person’s gifts, position, possessions, or success. Jealousy had contributed to the divisions in Corinth, as believers compared themselves with one another and competed for influence. Love rejoices when others are honored and refuses to regard another’s blessing as a personal loss.

Gal 5:26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying…
Pro 23:17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always continue…
Jas 3:14-16 But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition…

it does not boast,

Love does not draw attention to itself or seek praise for its accomplishments. Corinthian believers were tempted to boast in wisdom, spiritual gifts, leaders, and social standing. Love uses every ability and opportunity to strengthen others rather than to elevate oneself.

1Co 4:7 For who makes you so superior? What do you have…
2Co 10:17 Rather, “Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”
Rom 3:27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded.…

it is not proud.

Love is not inflated with self-importance. Pride had produced disorder and moral compromise in the Corinthian church because some considered themselves above correction or above fellow believers. Love humbly serves, receives correction, and regards the needs of others as worthy of concern.

Rom 12:16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud.…
1Pe 5:5 Young men, in the same way, submit yourselves…
Jas 4:6 But He gives us more grace. This is why it says:…

It is not rude,

Love does not act in ways that shame, disregard, or injure others. In a divided Corinthian church, such conduct threatened fellowship and contradicted the care believers owed one another.

1Pe 2:17 Treat everyone with high regard: Love the brotherhood…
Rom 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.…
1Th 4:11-12 and to aspire to live quietly, to attend to your own matters…

it is not self-seeking,

Love does not pursue personal advantage, honor, or control at another’s expense. Christ’s service and sacrifice set the pattern for believers to seek the good of others within the church.

1Co 10:24 No one should seek his own good, but the good of others.
Php 2:3-4 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride,…
Mrk 10:45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served,…

it is not easily angered,

Love is not governed by resentment or a quick temper. It exercises restraint, refusing to let personal offenses become occasions for conflict and division.

Jas 1:19-20 My beloved brothers, understand this: Be quick to listen…
Pro 15:18 A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but…
Pro 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than a warrior,…

it keeps no account of wrongs.

Love does not preserve a record of injuries in order to repay them later. It forgives as God forgives, guarding the unity and peace of the body of Christ.

2Co 5:19 that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ,…
Rom 4:7-8 Blessed are they whose lawless acts are forgiven……
Col 3:13 Bear with one another and forgive any complaint…

Love takes no pleasure in evil,

Love does not approve of sin, injustice, or unrighteousness (adikia), or conduct that harms others and defies God’s commands. In Corinth’s culture of sexual immorality, idolatry, and public corruption, believers were called to reject the wrongdoing surrounding them rather than excuse or celebrate it. Genuine love seeks what is right and does not find satisfaction in another person’s failure, shame, or suffering.

Rom 12:9 Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil;…
Psa 97:10 Hate evil, O you who love the LORD! He delivers them…
Pro 8:13 To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride…

but rejoices in the truth.

Love delights in what is honest, righteous, and consistent with God’s revealed will. It welcomes repentance, justice, faithfulness, and the triumph of what is true over deception. Among Christians facing false teaching and moral compromise, love required a steadfast commitment to truth in both belief and conduct.

3Jn 1:4 I have no greater joy than to hear that…
Psa 119:162 I rejoice in Your promise like one who finds great spoil.
Psa 119:111 Your testimonies are my heritage forever,…

It bears all things,

Love protects others rather than publicizing their failures. The Greek word for “bears” (stegō) can mean to cover or protect. In a Corinthian church marked by division and moral disorder, believers were called to deal with sin truthfully while refusing gossip, cruelty, or needless exposure.

Gal 6:2 Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way…
Col 3:13 Bear with one another and forgive any complaint…
1Pe 4:8 Above all, love one another deeply, because love covers…

believes all things,

Love does not live in suspicion or assume the worst about others. It is willing to trust sincere professions of faith and look for God’s work of repentance and growth without becoming careless about truth.

Mrk 9:23 “If You can?” echoed Jesus. “All things are possible…”…
Jhn 14:1 Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God;…
Heb 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for…

hopes all things,

Love remains confident that God can restore those who have fallen and strengthen His people through hardship. It looks beyond present failure and conflict to the fulfillment of God’s purposes.

Rom 8:24-25 For in this hope we were saved; but hope that is seen…
1Pe 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!…
Lam 3:21-24 Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope:…

endures all things.

Love remains steadfast under offense, disappointment, persecution, and trial. It does not abandon others when obedience becomes costly, but perseveres in faithfulness as Christ endured suffering to accomplish God’s will.

2Ti 2:10 For this reason I endure all things for the elect…
Heb 12:2-3 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author…
Jas 1:12 Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial…

Love never fails.

Love endures because it reflects God’s unchanging character and governs the life of Christ’s people. Spiritual gifts serve the church in the present age, but love remains forever.

Lam 3:22-23 Because of the loving devotion of the LORD…
Rom 8:38-39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, …

But where there are prophecies, they will cease;

Prophetic revelation strengthened and instructed the early church, yet it was given for a time and will end when God’s purposes for the present age are complete.

Dan 9:24 Seventy weeks are decreed for your people…
Heb 1:1-2 On many past occasions and in many different ways,…

where there are tongues, they will be restrained;

Tongues functioned as a sign and, when interpreted, as a means of edification. They too belong to the temporary gifts that will no longer be needed in God’s completed kingdom.

1Co 14:27-28 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two, or at most three,…
1Co 14:40 But everything must be done in a proper and orderly manner.

where there is knowledge, it will be dismissed.

Supernatural knowledge provides only a partial understanding of God’s truth in this life. When believers stand before the Lord, partial knowledge will give way to full understanding, while love continues without end.

1Co 1:19-21 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;…
1Co 8:1-3 Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know…

For we know in part

Human understanding remains limited in the present age. Though God has revealed truth through Scripture and given wisdom to His people, believers do not yet possess complete knowledge of His purposes or the fullness of what lies ahead.

1Co 8:2 The one who thinks he knows something…
Jhn 13:7 “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later…”…
Deu 29:29 The secret things belong to the LORD our God,…

and we prophesy in part,

Prophetic revelation in the early church conveyed God’s truth for the strengthening of believers, yet it did not disclose every detail of His plan. What God revealed was sufficient for the church’s need, while the complete fulfillment and understanding of His purposes await Christ’s return.

1Pe 1:10-12 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who foretold…
Dan 12:8-9 I heard, but I did not understand. So I asked…
Heb 1:1-2 On many past occasions and in many different ways,…

but when the perfect comes,

Paul points to the future completion of God’s redemptive plan at Christ’s return, when believers will know fully and see Him face to face. What is now incomplete will give way to the fullness of God’s kingdom.

1Jn 3:2 Beloved, we are now children of God…
Eph 4:13 until we all reach unity in the faith…
Jas 1:25 But the one who looks intently into the perfect law…

the partial passes away.

Prophecy, tongues, and partial knowledge serve the church during the present age but will no longer be needed when Christ brings all things to completion.

Heb 8:13 By speaking of a new covenant, He has made the first one…
2Co 3:11 For if what was fading away came with glory…
2Co 5:17 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.…

When I was a child,

Paul recalls the limitations that naturally belong to childhood, using them to picture the church’s present, incomplete grasp of God’s purposes.

Gal 4:1-3 What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child,…
Heb 5:13 For everyone who lives on milk is still an infant,…
Eph 4:14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves…

I talked like a child,

Speech is a primary indicator of maturity. In the ancient world, a child's speech was simple and often self-centered, lacking the depth and wisdom expected of an adult. This reflects the early Christian's understanding of spiritual truths, which may be superficial or incomplete. James 3:2 highlights the importance of mature speech as a sign of spiritual growth, emphasizing the need for believers to control their tongues as they mature in faith.

Eph 4:29 Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,…
Col 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt…
Jas 3:2-6 We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault…

I thought like a child,

Thinking like a child suggests a limited understanding and perspective. In the Greco-Roman context, children were not expected to engage in complex reasoning or decision-making. This phrase underscores the need for believers to develop a mature understanding of God's will and purpose. Romans 12:2 calls for the renewal of the mind, urging Christians to move beyond childish thinking to discern God's perfect will.

Eph 4:17-18 So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord,…
Rom 8:5-6 Those who live according to the flesh…
Col 3:2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

I reasoned like a child.

A child’s speech, understanding, and judgments are real but undeveloped. Likewise, believers in the present age know God truly, yet not with the fullness that awaits Christ’s return.

1Co 14:20 Brothers, stop thinking like children.…
Heb 5:14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use…
Php 1:9-10 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound…

When I became a man,

Adulthood brought greater responsibility and clearer judgment. Paul contrasts this maturity with the partial conditions of the present life.

Eph 4:13-15 until we all reach unity in the faith…
Jas 1:4 Allow perseverance to finish its work, …
Luk 2:52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and…

I set aside childish ways.

Setting aside childish ways signifies a deliberate embrace of maturity. The temporary and incomplete will give way to what is complete. Love remains, because it belongs to God’s enduring character and will continue when gifts such as prophecy, tongues, and partial knowledge have fulfilled their purpose.

Heb 6:1 Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings…
Eph 4:22-24 put off your former way of life, your old self…
Col 3:8-10 But now you must put aside anger, rage, malice…

Now we see but a dim reflection as in a mirror;

Ancient mirrors were polished metal and gave an imperfect image. Paul compares present spiritual understanding to such a reflection: real, yet incomplete. Believers know God truly in this life, but sin, weakness, and the limits of mortal life prevent full sight.

2Co 3:18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory…
Jas 1:23-24 For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out…
Pro 27:19 As water reflects the face, so the heart…

then we shall see face to face.

At Christ’s return, the barriers of this present age will be removed. God’s people will stand in His presence with direct, unhindered fellowship, enjoying the fulfillment of His promises in the new creation.

Num 12:8 I speak with him face to face, clearly and not in riddles;…
Exo 33:11 Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, …
Rev 22:4 They will see His face, and His name will be…

Now I know in part;

Paul includes himself among those whose knowledge remains limited. Even revealed truth is not yet understood in all its fullness while believers await the completion of God’s redemptive work.

1Co 8:2 The one who thinks he knows something…
Ecc 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time.…
Deu 29:29 The secret things belong to the LORD our God,…

then I shall know fully,

In the resurrection, believers will be made whole and conformed to Christ. Their understanding will no longer be clouded by sin, suffering, or mortality.

Isa 11:9 They will neither harm nor destroy on all My holy mountain…
Jer 31:34 No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother…
Heb 8:11 No longer will each one teach his neighbor or his brother…

even as I am fully known.

God already knows each person completely, including every thought, deed, and motive. The future hope is not that believers become omniscient, but that they will know God and His purposes with the completeness fitting for redeemed people in His presence, free from sin and misunderstanding.

Psa 139:1-4 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O LORD,…
Gal 4:9 But now that you know God, or rather are known by God,…
2Ti 2:19 Nevertheless, God’s firm foundation stands…

And now these three remain:

Unlike prophecy, tongues, and partial knowledge, which belong to the present age and will cease when perfection comes, these abiding graces mark the life of God’s people.

1Pe 1:4-5 and into an inheritance that is imperishable,…
Heb 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom,…
2Co 4:18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen…

faith, hope, and love;

Faith rests in God and His promises, hope looks confidently to their fulfillment, and love seeks the good of others in keeping with God’s character.

1Th 1:3 continually recalling before our God and Father…
1Th 5:8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober,…
Col 1:4-5 because we have heard about your faith in Christ Jesus…

but the greatest of these is love.

Love surpasses the others because it reflects God’s nature, fulfills His will, and endures forever. It is the essential guide for the use of every spiritual gift and the distinguishing mark of Christ’s disciples.

Jhn 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life…
Mrk 12:29-31 Jesus replied, “This is the most important: ‘Hear, O Israel,…
Col 3:14 And over all these virtues put on love…
