1	Early in the morning the chief priests, the rulers, and Scribes, even the whole council, after having deliberated together, caus'd Jesus to be bound, then led him away and deliver'd him to Pilate.	And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate.	Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
2	Pilate therefore ask'd him, art thou the king of the Jews? and he made answer, yes.	And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.”	“Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
3	the chief priests continuing to accuse him with much clamour,	And the chief priests accused him of many things.	The chief priests accused him of many things.
4	Pilate spake to him again, and said, will you make no defence for your self? don't you hear what they urge against you?	And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.”	So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
5	but Jesus still made no answer; so that Pilate was much amaz'd.	But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.	But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.
6	Now during the feast, it was customary to release a prisoner, to be nominated by the people.	Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked.	Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested.
7	Barabbas lay then confin'd with other seditious, who had committed murder in an insurrection.	And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas.	A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising.
8	the populace therefore fell a roaring, and desired him to do as was always practis'd.	And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them.	The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.
9	but Pilate answered them, saying, do you chuse to have Jesus releas'd, the king of the Jews?	And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?”	“Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate,
10	for he perceived plainly, it was out of malice, that the chief priests had prosecuted him.	For he perceived that it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up.	knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him.
11	but the chief priests incited the people to demand, that he would rather release Barabbas.	But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead.	But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.
12	Pilate still urg'd them again, and said, what then would you have me do with him, that you stile king of the Jews?	And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?”	“What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.
13	and they cried out again, crucify him.	And they cried out again, “Crucify him.”	“Crucify him!” they shouted.
14	Pilate replied, why, what harm has he done? but they cried out more furiously, crucify him.	And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.”	“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
15	Pilate therefore willing to humour the people, released to them Barabbas, and having caused Jesus to be scourg'd, he deliver'd him to be crucified.	So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.	Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
16	Then the soldiers took Jesus away into the hall, call'd Pretorium; and summon'd their whole company together.	And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion.	The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium) and called together the whole company of soldiers.
17	and they put on him a purple cloth, and set a wreath of thorns upon his head for a crown;	And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him.	They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him.
18	then they began to salute him, saying, "Hail king of the Jews!"	And they began to salute him, “Hail, King of the Jews!”	And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!”
19	and they struck him on the head with a cane, spit upon him, and bowing their knees, made a show of reverence.	And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him.	Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him.
20	Their mockery ended, they stript him of his purple, and put his own cloaths on him; then led him away to be crucified.	And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.	And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.
21	one Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, as he pass'd by in his return out of the country, was compell'd to carry the cross.	And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.	A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.
22	so they brought him to a place called Golgotha, that is, the place of a skull.	And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull).	They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).
23	there they offered him myrrhed wine to drink, but he did not take it.	And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.	Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.
24	after they had crucified him, they shared his garments, by casting lots for them: to determine what each of them should take.	And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take.	And they crucified him. 26	and the inscription of the charge against him was thus express'd, THE KING OF THE JEWS.	And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.”	The written notice of the charge against him read: the king of the jews.
27	at the same time they crucified two robbers, one on his right hand, the other on his left.	And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.	They crucified two rebels with him, one on his right and one on his left.
28	so that this passage of scripture was fulfill'd, "and he was numbred with the transgressors."
29	besides the people that pass'd by, shook their heads, and impiously said: ah, you that can destroy the temple, and rebuild it in three days,	And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days,	Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads and saying, “So! You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,
30	save your self, and come down from the cross.	save yourself, and come down from the cross!”	come down from the cross and save yourself!”
31	in like manner the chief priests and the Scribes in derision said to one another: he pretended to save others, himself he cannot save.	So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself.	In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself!
32	let the Messiah, the king of Israel, descend now from the cross: let us see that, and we will believe on him, and they that were crucified with him, threw their reproaches at him.	Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.	Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
33	Now from the sixth hour the whole land was cover'd with darkness until the ninth hour.	And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.	At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
34	and at the ninth hour Jesus cry'd out with a loud voice, saying, ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTANI, that is, MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAST THOU FORSAKEN ME?	And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”	And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
35	some there present upon hearing that, said: observe, he calls upon Elias.	And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”	When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36	then one of the soldiers ran and dipp'd a spunge in vinegar, which he fastned to a stick, and offered him to drink, now let us, said they, see whether Elias will come to take him down.	And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.”	Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37	then Jesus cry'd with a loud voice, and expired.	And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last.	With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.
38	Immediately the veil of the temple was rent in two, from the top to the bottom.	And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom.	The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
39	and the Centurion who stood over-against him, observing that he expired with so great a cry, said, certainly this man was the son of God.	And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”	And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”
40	there were likewise several women, who were spectators at a distance: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the minor, and of Joses and Salome:	There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome.	Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joseph, and Salome.
41	who had attended Jesus, and supply'd him with necessaries when he was in Galilee: besides many other women, who came up with him to Jerusalem.	When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.	In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.
42	Now, as soon as the evening was come; because it was then the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,	And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath,	It was Preparation Day (that is, the day before the Sabbath). So as evening approached,
43	one Joseph of Arimathea, an honourable senator, who was himself in expectation of the kingdom of God, ventur'd to come and wait upon Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.	Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.	Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.
44	Pilate surpriz'd that he should be dead so soon, sent for the Centurion, and ask'd him, if he had been dead any time.	Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. And summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead.	Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died.
45	and being satisfied of it, he granted the body to Joseph;	And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph.	When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.
46	who taking down the body, wrapped it in a fine linnen cloth, which he had bought, and laid it in a sepulchre, which was hewn out of a rock, and roll'd a stone for a door to the sepulchre: and Mary Magdalene,	And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.	So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.
47	and Mary the mother of Joses, took notice where he was laid.	Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.	Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid.
