1	Within two days was the feast of the passover, and of unleavened bread, and the chief priests, with the Scribes, contriv'd how they might seize Jesus by surprize, and put him to death.	It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him,	Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.
2	but they objected, it could not be during the festival, for fear of a popular insurrection.	for they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.”	“But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
3	now being at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, while he was at table, there came a woman with a viol full of the perfume of spikenard, which was very costly; and she opened the viol, and poured it upon his head.	And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head.	While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.
4	but some had a secret indignation, and said, why must the perfume be so wasted?	There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that?	Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume?
5	for we could have sold it for above two hundred denarys, and given them to the poor: and they inveighed against her.	For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her.	It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
6	but Jesus said, let her alone, why do you disquiet her? it is commendable, what she has done out of respect to me.	But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.	“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
7	the poor you have always with you, and you may relieve them whenever you please: but me you will not always have.	For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me.	The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me.
8	she has done what she could: she has perfum'd my body previously to my burial.	She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial.	She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.
9	I declare unto you, in whatever quarter of the world this part of the gospel-history shall be related, this action of hers shall be mention'd to her praise.	And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”	Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
10	Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests, in order to betray him to them.	Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.	Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.
11	they were glad to hear him, and promis'd to give him money, upon which he contriv'd the most favourable occasion to betray him. And on the first day of Unleavened Bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb, his disciples said to him, “Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?”	On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?”
13	upon which he dispatch'd two of his disciples, and said to them: go into the city, and you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water; follow him.	And he sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. 14	and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house: "thus saith our master; where is the chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?"	and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says, Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’	Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’
15	and he will shew you a large upper room ready furnished: there make preparation for us.	And he will show you a large upper room furnished and ready; there prepare for us.”	He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.”
16	his disciples therefore went away, and being come into the city, they found every thing, as he had told them; and they prepared the paschal lamb. 17	There he came in the evening with the twelve.	And when it was evening, he came with the twelve.	When evening came, Jesus arrived with the Twelve.
18	and as they sat eating, Jesus said, verily I say unto you, one of you that is eating with me, will betray me.	And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.”	While they were reclining at the table eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me—one who is eating with me.”
19	and they were seized with sorrow, all successively asking him, is it I?	They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?”	They were saddened, and one by one they said to him, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
20	but he answered them, saying, it is one of the twelve, he that eats of the same mess with me.	He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me.	“It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.
21	the son of man is going indeed, according to what is written of him: but wo to that man, by whom the son of man is betrayed: it would be better for that man, if he had never been born.	For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.”	The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22	When they had been eating, Jesus took bread, and having given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to them, and said, take it, this represents my body.	And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.”	While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”
23	and he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.	And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, and they all drank of it.	Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.

25	but this I tell you, I will never more drink of this fruit of the vine, from this time forth to that day, when I shall drink with you of the spiritual wine in the kingdom of God. 27	and Jesus said to them, this night you will all be staggered upon my account: for it is written, "I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered." 29	upon which Peter said to him, tho' all should stagger, yet I will not.	Peter said to him, “Even though they all fall away, I will not.”	Peter declared, “Even if all fall away, I will not.”
30	Jesus said to him, verily I tell thee, to-day, even this night, before the cock crow twice, you will renounce me thrice.	And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”	“Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.”
31	but he urg'd it with more vehemence, tho' I should die with you, I will not renounce you, and all the rest affirm'd the same.	But he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same.	But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
32	At length they came to a place call'd Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, stay here, whilst I shall be at prayer.	And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”	They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”
33	but he took with him Peter, James, and John, then he began to be in a great consternation and anguish of mind, and he said to them; my soul is exceeding sorrowful,	And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34	even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch.	And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.”	“My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.”
35	then advancing a little further, he fell on the ground, and prayed, that this anxiety might pass from him.	And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36	saying, father, all things are possible to thee, take away this cup from me: nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done.	And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”	“Abba, Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
37	Then he return'd, and having found them sleeping, he said to Peter, Simon, are you asleep? could you not watch one hour?	And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour?	Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?
38	watch and pray, that you may not yield to temptation: the mind indeed is vigorous, but the body is weak.	Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”	Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39	Again he retired, and prayed, uttering the same words.	And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.	Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.
40	then he return'd and found them still sleeping, for their eyes were heavy, and they did not know how to give an answer.	And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him.	When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him.
41	after that he came a third time, and said to them, sleep on now and take your rest. 'tis done, the time is come, and the son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.	And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.	Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.
42	rise, let us be going: see, the traitor is just upon us.	Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”	Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
43	All of a sudden, while he was yet speaking, appear'd Judas, one of the twelve, attended by a great number of people with swords and clubs, who were sent by the chief priests, the Scribes, and rulers.	And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.	Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44	now he that betrayed him, had given them this signal, you will see me salute one with a kiss, that's he: seize him, and don't let him escape.	Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.”	Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.”
45	then advancing, he went directly up to him, saying, master, master, and kissed him.	And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him.	Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him.
46	and they violently laid hands on him and secured him.	And they laid hands on him and seized him.	The men seized Jesus and arrested him.
47	but one of those that stood by, drew his sword against a servant of the high priest, and struck off his ear.	But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.	Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48	but Jesus addressing himself to them, said, why do you come with swords and clubs against me, as if you were to apprehend some robber?	And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me?	“Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?
49	I was daily among you, teaching in the temple, and you did not then seize upon me, but the scriptures are thereby accomplished.	Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.”	Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”
50	then all his disciples abandon'd him and fled.	And they all left him and fled.	Then everyone deserted him and fled.
51	But a certain youth, that was stript to his inmost vest, followed him, and was seized by the soldiers.	And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him,	A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him,
52	but he slipt from his vest, and fled away naked.	but he left the linen cloth and ran away naked.	he fled naked, leaving his garment behind.
53	Jesus they led away to the high priest's, where all the chief priests, the rulers and Scribes, were assembled.	And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together.	They took Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders and the teachers of the law came together.
54	Peter followed at a distance, even into the palace of the high priest: where he sat down among the servants to warm himself at the fire.	And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire.	Peter followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. There he sat with the guards and warmed himself at the fire.
55	Now the chief priests, and the whole council endeavour'd to get evidence against Jesus, to condemn him to die; but they found none.	Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none.	The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any.
56	there were indeed several, who depos'd what was false against him: besides, what they deposed was insufficient.	For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree.	Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57	at last there appear'd some, who gave in false evidence against him,	And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying,	Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:
58	saying, we heard him say, "I will pull down this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands."	“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’”	“We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.’”
59	but neither did this evidence appear sufficient.	Yet even about this their testimony did not agree.	Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60	then the high priest rising up in the midst of the assembly, ask'd Jesus, saying, have you nothing to plead for your self? what say you to the evidence they give against you?	And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?”	Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?”
61	but Jesus remain'd silent, and gave no answer, then the high priest asked him again, and said to him, art thou the Christ, the son of the most High?	But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?”	But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
62	and Jesus answered, I AM, and ye shall see the son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.	And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”	“I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
63	then the high priest rent his robes, and said to the council, what occasion is there for any more witnesses?	And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need?	The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked.
64	you have heard the blasphemy, what is your opinion? and they all pronounc'd, that he deserved to die.	You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death.	“You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death.
65	then some began to spit on him, others cover'd his face and struck him on the head, crying out, divine, who it is, and the domestics slapt him on the cheeks.	And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him with blows.	Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.
66	In the mean time Peter was in the entry of the hall, where one of the maids belonging to the high priest came:	And as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came,	While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came by.
67	and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked earnestly upon him, and said, you too was with Jesus the Nazarene.	and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with the Nazarene, Jesus.”	When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. “You also were with that Nazarene, Jesus,” she said.
68	but he denied it, saying, I don't know him, neither am I acquainted with any such you mention, and he went out into the porch, when the cock crow'd.	But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you mean.” And he went out into the gateway and the rooster crowed.	But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said, and went out into the entryway.
69	the maid saw him a second time, and said to the standers-by, this is one of them:	And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.”	When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.”
70	but he denied it again, a little time after, they that stood by, still urg'd Peter, saying, you are certainly one of his disciples, for your speech shows you to be a Galilean.	But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”	Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”
71	but he fell a cursing, and swore, I don't know the man you mention,	But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.”	He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”
72	and the cock crowed for the second time, then Peter calling to mind that expression of Jesus, "before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice," he cover'd his head and wept.	And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.	Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
