1 Early in the morning the chief priests immediately came to a decision with the leaders and the scribes. The whole Jewish council decided to tie Jesus up, lead him away, and hand him over to Pilate. And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
2 Pilate asked him, |Are you the king of the Jews?| |Yes, I am,| Jesus answered him. And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
3 The chief priests were accusing him of many things. And the chief priests accused him of many things. The chief priests accused him of many things.
4 So Pilate asked him again, |Don't you have any answer? Look how many accusations they're bringing against you!| And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
5 But Jesus no longer answered anything, so Pilate was surprised. But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed. But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.
6 At every Passover festival, Pilate would free one prisoner whom the people asked for. Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested.
7 There was a man named Barabbas in prison. He was with some rebels who had committed murder during a riot. And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising.
8 The crowd asked Pilate to do for them what he always did. And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

14 Pilate said to them, |Why? What has he done wrong?| But they shouted even louder, |Crucify him!| And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
15 Pilate wanted to satisfy the people, so he freed Barabbas for them. But he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified. So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
16 The soldiers led Jesus into the courtyard of the palace and called together the whole troop. And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. 31 The chief priests and the scribes made fun of him among themselves in the same way. They said, |He saved others, but he can't save himself. 32 Let the Messiah, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now so that we may see and believe.| Even those who were crucified with him were insulting him. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him. 35 When some of the people standing there heard him say that, they said, |Listen! He's calling Elijah.| And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36 Someone ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar. Then he put it on a stick and offered Jesus a drink. The man said, |Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down.| And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37 Then Jesus cried out in a loud voice and died. And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.

Joseph boldly went to Pilate's quarters to ask for the body of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.
44 Pilate wondered if Jesus had already died. So he summoned the officer to ask him if Jesus was, in fact, dead. Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.
