1 It was two days before the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for some underhanded way to arrest Jesus and to kill him. It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him, Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.
2 However, they said, |We shouldn't arrest him during the festival, or else there will be a riot among the people.| for they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people.” “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the people may riot.”
3 Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had suffered from a skin disease. While Jesus was sitting there, a woman went to him. She had a bottle of very expensive perfume made from pure nard. She opened the bottle and poured the perfume on his head. And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.
4 Some who were there were irritated and said to one another, |Why was the perfume wasted like this? There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume?
5 This perfume could have been sold for a high price, and the money could have been given to the poor.| So they said some very unkind things to her. For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her. It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the money given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.
6 Jesus said, |Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing for me. But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. “Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.
7 You will always have the poor with you and can help them whenever you want. But you will not always have me with you. For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. 8 She did what she could. She came to pour perfume on my body before it is placed in a tomb. She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.

20 He said to them, |It's one of you twelve, someone dipping his hand into the bowl with me. He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who is dipping bread into the dish with me. “It is one of the Twelve,” he replied, “one who dips bread into the bowl with me.
21 The Son of Man is going to die as the Scriptures say he will. But how horrible it will be for that person who betrays the Son of Man! It would have been better for that person if he had never been born.| For the Son of Man goes as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born.”
22 While they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it. He broke the bread, gave it to them, and said, |Take this. This is my body.| And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.” While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; this is my body.”

30 Jesus said to Peter, |I can guarantee this truth: Tonight, before a rooster crows twice, you will say three times that you don't know me.| And Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” “Truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “today—yes, tonight—before the rooster crows twice you yourself will disown me three times.”
31 But Peter said very strongly, |Even if I have to die with you, I will never say that I don't know you.| All the other disciples said the same thing. But he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I will not deny you.” And they all said the same. But Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” And all the others said the same.
32 Then they came to a place called Gethsemane. He said to his disciples, |Stay here while I pray.| And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.”

37 He went back and found them asleep. He said to Peter, |Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn't you stay awake for one hour? And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you asleep? Could you not watch one hour? Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?
38 Stay awake, and pray that you won't be tempted. You want to do what's right, but you're weak.| Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
39 He went away again and prayed the same prayer as before. And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.
40 He found them asleep because they couldn't keep their eyes open. They didn't even know what they should say to him. And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy, and they did not know what to answer him. When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 41 He came back a third time and said to them, |You might as well sleep now. It's all over. The time has come for the Son of Man to be handed over to sinners. And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? It is enough; the hour has come. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up! Let's go! The one who is betraying me is near.| Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.” Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
43 Just then, while Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve apostles, arrived. A crowd carrying swords and clubs was with him. They were from the chief priests, scribes, and leaders of the people. And immediately, while he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
44 Now, the traitor had given them a signal. He said, |The one I kiss is the man you want. Arrest him, and guard him closely as you take him away.| Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.”
45 Then Judas quickly stepped up to Jesus and said, |Rabbi!| and kissed him. And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” And he kissed him. Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him.
46 Some men took hold of Jesus and arrested him. And they laid hands on him and seized him. The men seized Jesus and arrested him.
47 One of those standing there pulled out his sword and cut off the ear of the chief priest's servant. But one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. Then one of those standing near drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
48 Jesus asked them, |Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as if I were a criminal? And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? “Am I leading a rebellion,” said Jesus, “that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me?
49 I used to teach in the temple courtyard every day. But you didn't arrest me then. But what the Scriptures say must come true.| Day after day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. But let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”
50 Then all the disciples abandoned him and ran away. And they all left him and fled. Then everyone deserted him and fled.
51 A certain young man was following Jesus. He had nothing on but a linen sheet. They tried to arrest him, And a young man followed him, with nothing but a linen cloth about his body. And they seized him, A young man, wearing nothing but a linen garment, was following Jesus. When they seized him,

53 The men took Jesus to the chief priest. All the chief priests, leaders, and scribes had gathered together. And they led Jesus to the high priest. 54 Peter followed him at a distance and went into the chief priest's courtyard. He sat with the guards and warmed himself facing the glow of a fire. 55 The chief priests and the whole Jewish council were searching for some testimony against Jesus in order to execute him. But they couldn't find any. The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any.
56 Many gave false testimony against him, but their statements did not agree. For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.
57 Then some men stood up and gave false testimony against him. They said, And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:
58 |We heard him say, 'I'll tear down this temple made by humans, and in three days I'll build another temple, one not made by human hands.'| “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’” “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple made with human hands and in three days will build another, not made with hands.’”
59 But their testimony did not agree even on this point. Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. Yet even then their testimony did not agree.
60 So the chief priest stood up in the center and asked Jesus, |Don't you have any answer to what these men testify against you?| And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?”
61 But he was silent. The chief priest asked him again, |Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?| But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” But Jesus remained silent and gave no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”
62 Jesus answered, |Yes, I am, and you will see the Son of Man in the highest position in heaven. He will be coming with the clouds of heaven.| And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
63 The chief priest tore his clothes in horror and said, |Why do we need any more witnesses? And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? The high priest tore his clothes. “Why do we need any more witnesses?” he asked.
64 You've heard him dishonor God! What's your verdict?| All of them condemned him with the death sentence. You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death. “You have heard the blasphemy. What do you think?” They all condemned him as worthy of death.
65 Some of them began to spit on him. They covered his face and hit him with their fists. They said to him, |Prophesy!| Even the guards took him and slapped him. And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him with blows. Then some began to spit at him; they blindfolded him, struck him with their fists, and said, “Prophesy!” And the guards took him and beat him.

But he denied it. “I don’t know or understand what you’re talking about,” he said, and went out into the entryway.
69 The servant saw him. Once again she said to those who were standing around, |This man is one of them!| And the servant girl saw him and began again to say to the bystanders, “This man is one of them.” When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing around, “This fellow is one of them.”
70 Peter again denied it. After a little while the men standing there said to Peter again, |It's obvious you're one of them. You're a Galilean!| But again he denied it. And after a little while the bystanders again said to Peter, “Certainly you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.” Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to Peter, “Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean.”
71 Then Peter began to curse and swear with an oath, |I don't know this man you're talking about!| But he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know this man of whom you speak.” He began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know this man you’re talking about.”
72 Just then a rooster crowed a second time. Peter remembered that Jesus said to him, |Before a rooster crows twice, you will say three times that you don't know me.| Then Peter began to cry very hard. And immediately the rooster crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept. Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows twice you will disown me three times.” And he broke down and wept.
