"I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener.1Ἐγώ εἰμι ἄμπελος ἀληθινή καὶ Πατήρ μου γεωργός ἐστιν
He takes away every branch that does not bear fruit in me. He prunes every branch that bears fruit so that it will bear more fruit.2πᾶν κλῆμα ἐν ἐμοὶ μὴ φέρον καρπὸν αἴρει αὐτό καὶ πᾶν τὸ καρπὸν φέρον καθαίρει αὐτὸ ἵνα καρπὸν πλείονα φέρῃ
You are clean already because of the word that I have spoken to you.3ἤδη ὑμεῖς καθαροί ἐστε διὰ τὸν λόγον ὃν λελάληκα ὑμῖν
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.
"I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me--and I in him--bears much fruit, because apart from me you can accomplish nothing.5Ἐγώ εἰμι ἄμπελος ὑμεῖς τὰ κλήματα μένων ἐν ἐμοὶ κἀγὼ ἐν αὐτῷ οὗτος φέρει καρπὸν πολύν ὅτι χωρὶς ἐμοῦ οὐ δύνασθε ποιεῖν οὐδέν
If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown out like a branch, and dries up; and such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and are burned up.6ἐὰν μή τις μένῃ ἐν ἐμοί ἐβλήθη ἔξω ὡς τὸ κλῆμα καὶ ἐξηράνθη καὶ συνάγουσιν αὐτὰ καὶ εἰς τὸ πῦρ βάλλουσιν καὶ καίεται
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you.7ἐὰν μείνητε ἐν ἐμοὶ καὶ τὰ ῥήματά μου ἐν ὑμῖν μείνῃ ἐὰν θέλητε αἰτήσασθε καὶ γενήσεται ὑμῖν
My Father is honored by this, that you bear much fruit and show that you are my disciples. 8ἐν τούτῳ ἐδοξάσθη Πατήρ μου ἵνα καρπὸν πολὺν φέρητε καὶ γένησθε* ἐμοὶ μαθηταί
"Just as the Father has loved me, I have also loved you; remain in my love.9Καθὼς ἠγάπησέν με Πατήρ κἀγὼ ὑμᾶς ἠγάπησα μείνατε ἐν τῇ ἀγάπῃ τῇ ἐμῇ
If you obey my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commandments and remain in his love.10ἐὰν τὰς ἐντολάς μου τηρήσητε μενεῖτε ἐν τῇ ἀγάπῃ μου καθὼς ἐγὼ «τοῦ Πατρός μου» «τὰς ἐντολὰς» τετήρηκα καὶ μένω αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ἀγάπῃ
I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be complete.11Ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἵνα χαρὰ ἐμὴ ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ χαρὰ ὑμῶν πληρωθῇ
My commandment is this--to love one another just as I have loved you.12Αὕτη ἐστὶν ἐντολὴ ἐμὴ ἵνα ἀγαπᾶτε ἀλλήλους καθὼς ἠγάπησα ὑμᾶς
No one has greater love than this--that one lays down his life for his friends.13μείζονα ταύτης ἀγάπην οὐδεὶς ἔχει ἵνα τις τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ θῇ ὑπὲρ τῶν φίλων αὐτοῦ
You are my friends if you do what I command you.14Ὑμεῖς φίλοι μού ἐστε ἐὰν ποιῆτε ἃ* ἐγὼ ἐντέλλομαι ὑμῖν
I no longer call you slaves, because the slave does not understand what his master is doing. But I have called you friends, because I have revealed to you everything I heard from my Father.15οὐκέτι λέγω ὑμᾶς δούλους ὅτι δοῦλος οὐκ οἶδεν τί ποιεῖ αὐτοῦ κύριος ὑμᾶς δὲ εἴρηκα φίλους ὅτι πάντα ἤκουσα παρὰ τοῦ Πατρός μου ἐγνώρισα ὑμῖν
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that remains, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.16οὐχ ὑμεῖς με ἐξελέξασθε ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ ἐξελεξάμην ὑμᾶς καὶ ἔθηκα ὑμᾶς ἵνα ὑμεῖς ὑπάγητε καὶ καρπὸν φέρητε καὶ καρπὸς ὑμῶν μένῃ ἵνα ὅ¦τι ἂν αἰτήσητε τὸν Πατέρα ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί μου δῷ ὑμῖν
This I command you--to love one another. 17ταῦτα ἐντέλλομαι ὑμῖν ἵνα ἀγαπᾶτε ἀλλήλους
"If the world hates you, be aware that it hated me first.18Εἰ κόσμος ὑμᾶς μισεῖ γινώσκετε ὅτι ἐμὲ πρῶτον ὑμῶν μεμίσηκεν
If you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own. However, because you do not belong to the world, but I chose you out of the world, for this reason the world hates you.19εἰ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου ἦτε κόσμος ἂν τὸ ἴδιον ἐφίλει ὅτι δὲ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου οὐκ ἐστέ ἀλλ’ ἐγὼ ἐξελεξάμην ὑμᾶς ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου διὰ τοῦτο μισεῖ ὑμᾶς κόσμος
Remember what I told you, 'A slave is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they obeyed my word, they will obey yours too.20Μνημονεύετε τοῦ λόγου οὗ ἐγὼ εἶπον ὑμῖν Οὐκ ἔστιν δοῦλος μείζων τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ εἰ ἐμὲ ἐδίωξαν καὶ ὑμᾶς διώξουσιν εἰ τὸν λόγον μου ἐτήρησαν καὶ τὸν ὑμέτερον τηρήσουσιν
But they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.21ἀλλὰ ταῦτα πάντα ποιήσουσιν εἰς ὑμᾶς διὰ τὸ ὄνομά μου ὅτι οὐκ οἴδασιν τὸν πέμψαντά με
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. But they no longer have any excuse for their sin.22εἰ μὴ ἦλθον καὶ ἐλάλησα αὐτοῖς ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ εἴχοσαν νῦν δὲ πρόφασιν οὐκ ἔχουσιν περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν
The one who hates me hates my Father too.23 ἐμὲ μισῶν καὶ τὸν Πατέρα μου μισεῖ
If I had not performed among them the miraculous deeds that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen the deeds and have hated both me and my Father.24εἰ τὰ ἔργα μὴ ἐποίησα ἐν αὐτοῖς οὐδεὶς ἄλλος ἐποίησεν ἁμαρτίαν οὐκ εἴχοσαν νῦν δὲ καὶ ἑωράκασιν καὶ μεμισήκασιν καὶ ἐμὲ καὶ τὸν Πατέρα μου
Now this happened to fulfill the word that is written in their law, 'They hated me without reason.'25ἀλλ’ ἵνα πληρωθῇ λόγος ἐν τῷ νόμῳ αὐτῶν γεγραμμένος ὅτι Ἐμίσησάν με δωρεάν
When the Advocate comes, whom I will send you from the Father--the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father--he will testify about me,26Ὅταν ἔλθῃ Παράκλητος ὃν ἐγὼ πέμψω ὑμῖν παρὰ τοῦ Πατρός τὸ Πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας παρὰ τοῦ Πατρὸς ἐκπορεύεται ἐκεῖνος μαρτυρήσει περὶ ἐμοῦ
and you also will testify, because you have been with me from the beginning. 27καὶ ὑμεῖς δὲ μαρτυρεῖτε ὅτι ἀπ’ ἀρχῆς μετ’ ἐμοῦ ἐστε
