| 1"I am the true vine and my Father is the gardener. | 1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. |
| 2He takes away every branch that does not bear fruit in me. He prunes every branch that bears fruit so that it will bear more fruit. | 2Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. |
| 3You are clean already because of the word that I have spoken to you. | 3Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. |
| 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. | 4Abide in me, and I in you. | 20Remember what I told you, 'A slave is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. | 26When the Advocate comes, whom I will send you from the Father--the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father--he will testify about me, | 26“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. |
| 27and you also will testify, because you have been with me from the beginning. | 27And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning. |
