"I have told you all these things so that you will not fall away. | 1“I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. |
They will put you out of the synagogue, yet a time is coming when the one who kills you will think he is offering service to God. | 2They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. |
They will do these things because they have not known the Father or me. | 3And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. |
But I have told you these things so that when their time comes, you will remember that I told you about them. "I did not tell you these things from the beginning because I was with you. | 4But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. |
But now I am going to the one who sent me, and not one of you is asking me, 'Where are you going?' | 5But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ |
Instead your hearts are filled with sadness because I have said these things to you. | 6But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. |
But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I am going away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you. | 7Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. |
And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong concerning sin and righteousness and judgment-- | 8And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: |
concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; | 9concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; |
concerning righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; | 10concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; |
and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. | 11concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. |
"I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. | 12“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. |
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak on his own authority, but will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you what is to come. | 13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. |
He will glorify me, because he will receive from me what is mine and will tell it to you. | 14He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. |
Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what is mine and will tell it to you. | 15All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. |
In a little while you will see me no longer; again after a little while, you will see me." | 16“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” |
Then some of his disciples said to one another, "What is the meaning of what he is saying, 'In a little while you will not see me; again after a little while, you will see me,' and, 'because I am going to the Father'?" | 17So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” |
So they kept on repeating, "What is the meaning of what he says, 'In a little while'? We do not understand what he is talking about." | 18So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” |
Jesus could see that they wanted to ask him about these things, so he said to them, "Are you asking each other about this--that I said, 'In a little while you will not see me; again after a little while, you will see me'? | 19Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? |
I tell you the solemn truth, you will weep and wail, but the world will rejoice; you will be sad, but your sadness will turn into joy. | 20Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. |
When a woman gives birth, she has distress because her time has come, but when her child is born, she no longer remembers the suffering because of her joy that a human being has been born into the world. | 21When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. |
So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. | 22So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. |
At that time you will ask me nothing. I tell you the solemn truth, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you. | 23In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. |
Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive it, so that your joy may be complete. | 24Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full. |
"I have told you these things in obscure figures of speech; a time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in obscure figures, but will tell you plainly about the Father. | 25“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. |
At that time you will ask in my name, and I do not say that I will ask the Father on your behalf. | 26In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; |
For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. | 27for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. |
I came from the Father and entered into the world, but in turn, I am leaving the world and going back to the Father." | 28I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.” |
His disciples said, "Look, now you are speaking plainly and not in obscure figures of speech! | 29His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! |
Now we know that you know everything and do not need anyone to ask you anything. Because of this we believe that you have come from God." | 30Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” |
Jesus replied, "Do you now believe? | 31Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? |
Look, a time is coming--and has come--when you will be scattered, each one to his own home, and I will be left alone. Yet I am not alone, because my Father is with me. | 32Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. |
I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In the world you have trouble and suffering, but take courage--I have conquered the world." | 33I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” |
