Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. | 1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. |
Mary was the woman who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair. Her brother Lazarus was the one who was ill. | 2It was the Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. |
So the sisters sent word to Jesus and told him, "Lord, the one whom you love is ill." | 3So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, "Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick." |
But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This illness isn't meant to end in death. It's for God's glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it." | 4But when Jesus heard this, He said, "This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it." |
Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. | 5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. |
Yet, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed where he was for two more days. | 6So when He heard that he was sick, He then stayed two days longer in the place where He was. |
After this, he told the disciples, "Let's go back to Judea." | 7Then after this He said to the disciples, "Let us go to Judea again." |
The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jewish leaders were just now trying to stone you to death, and you are going back there again?" | 8The disciples said to Him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone You, and are You going there again?" |
Jesus replied, "There are twelve hours in the day, aren't there? If anyone walks during the day he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. | 9Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. |
But if anyone walks at night he stumbles, because the light is not in him." | 10"But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him." |
These were the things he said. Then after this, he told them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I'm leaving to wake him up." | 11This He said, and after that He said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep." |
So the disciples told him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well." | 12The disciples then said to Him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover." |
Jesus, however, had been speaking about his death, but they thought that he was speaking about resting or sleeping. | 13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of literal sleep. |
Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus has died. | 14So Jesus then said to them plainly, "Lazarus is dead, |
For your sake I'm glad that I wasn't there, so that you may believe. But let's go to him." | 15and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him." |
Then Thomas, who was called the Twin, told his fellow disciples, "Let's go, too, so that we may die with him!" | 16Therefore Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let us also go, so that we may die with Him." |
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. | 17So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. |
Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away, | 18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off; |
and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. | 19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. |
As soon as Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. | 20Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house. |
Martha told Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. | 21Martha then said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. |
But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, he will give it to you." | 22"Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You." |
Jesus told her, "Your brother will rise again." | 23Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." |
Martha told him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." | 24Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day." |
Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The person who believes in me, even though he dies, will live. | 25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, |
Indeed, everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe that?" | 26and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?" |
"Yes, Lord," she told him. "I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who was to come into the world." | 27She said to Him, "Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world." |
When she had said this, she went away and called her sister Mary and told her privately, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you!" | 28When she had said this, she went away and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you." |
As soon as Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. | 29And when she heard it, she got up quickly and was coming to Him. |
Now Jesus had not yet arrived at the village but was still at the place where Martha had met him. | 30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him. |
When the Jewish leaders who had been with her, consoling her in the house, saw Mary get up quickly and go out, they followed her, thinking that she had gone to the tomb to cry there. | 31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. |
As soon as Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet and told him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother wouldn't have died." | 32Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died." |
When Jesus saw her crying, and the Jews who had come with her crying, he was greatly troubled in spirit and deeply moved. | 33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled, |
He asked, "Where have you put him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see." | 34and said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to Him, "Lord, come and see." |
Jesus burst into tears. | 35Jesus wept. |
So the Jewish leaders said, "See how much he loved him!" | 36So the Jews were saying, "See how He loved him!" |
But some of them said, "Surely the one who opened the eyes of the blind man could have kept this man from dying, couldn't he?" | 37But some of them said, "Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man also from dying?" |
Groaning deeply again, Jesus came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying in front of it. | 38So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. |
Jesus said, "Remove the stone." Martha, the dead man's sister, told him, "Lord, there must be a stench by now, because he's been dead for four days." | 39Jesus said, "Remove the stone." Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, "Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days." |
Jesus told her, "I told you that if you believed you would see God's glory, didn't I?" | 40Jesus said to her, "Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" |
So they removed the stone. Then Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for hearing me. | 41So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, "Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. |
I know that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." | 42"I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me." |
After saying this, he shouted with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" | 43When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come forth." |
The man who had died came out, his hands and feet tied with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a handkerchief. Jesus told them, "Untie him, and let him go." | 44The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go." |
Many of the Jews who had come with Mary and who had observed what Jesus did believed in him. | 45Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what He had done, believed in Him. |
Some of them, however, went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. | 46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done. |
So the high priests and the Pharisees assembled the Council and said, "What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs. | 47Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees convened a council, and were saying, "What are we doing? For this man is performing many signs. |
If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation." | 48"If we let Him go on like this, all men will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation." |
But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, told them, "You don't know anything! | 49But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all, |
You don't realize that it is better for you to have one man die for the people than to have the whole nation destroyed." | 50nor do you take into account that it is expedient for you that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish." |
Now he did not say this on his own initiative. As high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, | 51Now he did not say this on his own initiative, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation, |
and not only for the nation, but that he would also gather into one the children of God who were scattered abroad. | 52and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. |
So from that day on they resolved to put him to death. | 53So from that day on they planned together to kill Him. |
As a result, Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews. Instead, he went from there to a town called Ephraim in the region near the wilderness. There he remained with his disciples. | 54Therefore Jesus no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples. |
Now the Jewish Passover was approaching, and before the Passover many people from the countryside went up to Jerusalem to purify themselves. | 55Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover to purify themselves. |
They kept looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? Surely he won't come to the festival, will he?" | 56So they were seeking for Jesus, and were saying to one another as they stood in the temple, "What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?" |
Now the high priests and the Pharisees had given orders that whoever knew where he was should tell them so that they could arrest him. | 57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might seize Him. |
