Teachings about Divorce
(Matthew 19:1–12)

1And from there, having risen up, He comes into the borders of Judea, and beyond the Jordan. And again crowds come together to Him, and as He had been accustomed, again He was teaching them.

2And having come, the Pharisees were questioning Him whether it is lawful for a husband to send away a wife—testing Him.

3And answering, He said to them, “What did Moses command you⁺?”

4And they said, “Moses allowed us to write a roll of divorce and to send her away.”

5But Jesus said to them, “For your⁺ hardness of heart he wrote you⁺ this commandment; 6but from the beginning of creation, ‘He made them male and female.’ 7‘On account of this a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8and the two will be for one flesh,’ so that they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9Therefore what God has yoked together, let man not separate.”

10And in the house again, the disciples were questioning Him about this. 11And He says to them, “Whoever shall send away his wife and shall marry another, he commits adultery against her. 12And if a woman, having divorced her husband, shall marry another, she commits adultery.”

Jesus Blesses the Children
(Matthew 19:13–15; Luke 18:15–17)

13And they were bringing little children to Him so that He might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them.

14And having seen, Jesus was indignant and said to them, “Permit the little children to come to Me; do not forbid them! For of such is the kingdom of God. 15Truly I say to you⁺, whoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall never enter into it.” 16And having taken them in His arms, He was blessing them, having laid the hands on them.

The Rich Young Man
(Matthew 19:16–30; Luke 18:18–30)

17And of Him going forth into the way, one having run up and having knelt down to Him was questioning Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do so that I may inherit eternal life?”

18And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except one—God. 19You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.”

20And he was saying to Him, “Teacher, all these I kept from my youth.”

21And Jesus, having looked on him, loved him and said to him, “One thing to you is lacking: Go, sell as much as you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.

22And having been sad at the word, he went away grieving; for he was one having many possessions.

23And having looked around, Jesus says to His disciples, “How difficultly those having riches will enter into the kingdom of God!”

24And the disciples were astonished at His words.

But Jesus, answering, says to them again, “Children, how difficult it is to enter into the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”

26And they were exceedingly astonished, saying among themselves, “And who is able to be saved?”

27Having looked on them, Jesus says, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

28Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we left all and followed You.”

29Jesus was saying, “Truly I say to you⁺, there is no one who left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for My sake and for the sake of the gospel 30who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and fields, with persecutions—and in the age that is coming, eternal life. 31But many first will be last, and the last, first.”

The Third Prediction of the Passion
(Matthew 20:17–19; Luke 18:31–34)

32And they were on the way, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was going on before them. And they were astonished, and those following were afraid. And having taken aside the Twelve again, He began to tell them the things being about to happen to Him: 33“Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes, and they will condemn Him to death and will betray Him to the Gentiles. 34And they will mock Him and will spit upon Him and will flog Him and will kill Him, and after three days He will rise again.”

The Request of James and John
(Matthew 20:20–28)

35And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come to Him, saying to Him, “Teacher, we wish that You would do for us whatever we might ask You.”

36And He said to them, “What do you⁺ want Me to do for you⁺?”

37And they said to Him, “Give to us that one at Your right hand and one at Your left hand we might sit in Your glory.”

38And Jesus said to them, “You⁺ do not know what you⁺ ask. Are you⁺ able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?”

39And they said to Him, “We are able.”

And Jesus said to them, “You⁺ will drink the cup that I drink, and you⁺ will be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized. 40But to sit at My right hand or at My left hand is not Mine to give, but it is to those for whom it has been prepared.”

41And having heard, the ten began to be indignant about James and John. 42And Jesus, having summoned them, says to them, “You⁺ know that those considered to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43But it is not thus among you⁺. But whoever may want to become great among you⁺, he will be your⁺ servant; 44and whoever may want to be first among you⁺, he will be slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Jesus Heals Bartimaeus
(Matthew 20:29–34; Luke 18:35–43)

46And they come to Jericho. And in His going out from Jericho—and His disciples and a large crowd—the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting beside the road. 47And having heard that it is Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and to say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

48And many were rebuking him that he should be silent. But much more he was crying out, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

49And having stood, Jesus said, “Call him.

And they call the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage! Rise up! He calls you.”

50And having cast away his cloak, having leaped up, he came to Jesus.

51And answering him, Jesus says, “What do you desire that I may do for you?”

And the blind man said to Him, “Rabboni, that I may receive sight.”

52“And” Jesus said to him, “Go, your faith has saved you.” And immediately he received his sight, and he was following Him on the road.
