Elijah’s Message to Ahab

1  וַיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) יָמִ֣ים (after days) רַבִּ֔ים (many), וּדְבַר־ (that the word) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) הָיָה֙ (came) אֶל־ (to) אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ (Elijah) בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה (in the year) הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֖ית (third), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), לֵ֚ךְ (Go), הֵרָאֵ֣ה (present yourself) אֶל־ (to) אַחְאָ֔ב (Ahab), וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה (and I will send) מָטָ֖ר (rain) עַל־ (upon) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ (of the earth).

2  וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ (And went) אֵֽלִיָּ֔הוּ (Elijah) לְהֵרָא֖וֹת (to appear) אֶל־ (to) אַחְאָ֑ב (Ahab). וְהָרָעָ֖ב (And the famine) חָזָ֥ק (was severe) בְּשֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ (in Samaria). 3  וַיִּקְרָ֣א (And had called) אַחְאָ֔ב (Ahab) אֶל־ (to) עֹבַדְיָ֖הוּ (Obadiah), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who was) עַל־ (over) הַבָּ֑יִת (the house).

וְעֹבַדְיָ֗הוּ (And Obadiah) הָיָ֥ה (was) יָרֵ֛א (one who feared) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) מְאֹֽד׃ (greatly), 4  וַיְהִי֙ (and for it was) בְּהַכְרִ֣ית (in cutting off) אִיזֶ֔בֶל (Jezebel) אֵ֖ת (-) נְבִיאֵ֣י (the prophets) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וַיִּקַּ֨ח (that had taken) עֹבַדְיָ֜הוּ (Obadiah) מֵאָ֣ה (a hundred) נְבִאִ֗ים (prophets) וַֽיַּחְבִּיאֵ֞ם (and hidden them), חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים (fifty) אִישׁ֙ (men) בַּמְּעָרָ֔ה (to a cave), וְכִלְכְּלָ֖ם (and he sustained them) לֶ֥חֶם (with bread) וָמָֽיִם׃ (and water).

5  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And had said) אַחְאָב֙ (Ahab) אֶל־ (to) עֹ֣בַדְיָ֔הוּ (Obadiah), לֵ֤ךְ (Go) בָּאָ֙רֶץ֙ (into the land), אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) מַעְיְנֵ֣י (the springs) הַמַּ֔יִם (of the waters) וְאֶ֖ל (and to) כָּל־ (all) הַנְּחָלִ֑ים (the brooks). אוּלַ֣י׀ (Perhaps) נִמְצָ֣א (we may find) חָצִ֗יר (grass) וּנְחַיֶּה֙ (and keep alive) ס֣וּס (the horses) וָפֶ֔רֶד (and mules), וְל֥וֹא (so that not) נַכְרִ֖ית (we will have to cut off) מֵהַבְּהֵמָֽה׃ (any livestock).

6  וַֽיְחַלְּק֥וּ (And they divided) לָהֶ֛ם (between them) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) לַֽעֲבָר־ (to explore) בָּ֑הּ (it). אַחְאָ֞ב (Ahab) הָלַ֨ךְ (went) בְּדֶ֤רֶךְ (way) אֶחָד֙ (one) לְבַדּ֔וֹ (by himself), וְעֹֽבַדְיָ֛הוּ (and Obadiah) הָלַ֥ךְ (went) בְּדֶרֶךְ־ (way) אֶחָ֖ד (one) לְבַדּֽוֹ׃ (by himself).

7  וַיְהִ֤י (And was) עֹבַדְיָ֙הוּ֙ (Obadiah) בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ (on the way), וְהִנֵּ֥ה (and behold), אֵלִיָּ֖הוּ (Elijah) לִקְרָאת֑וֹ (met him), וַיַּכִּרֵ֙הוּ֙ (and he recognized him) וַיִּפֹּ֣ל (and fell) עַל־ (on) פָּנָ֔יו (his face) וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (and said), הַאַתָּ֥ה (Are you) זֶ֖ה (this one)— אֲדֹנִ֥י (my lord) אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃ (Elijah)?

8  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And he answered) ל֖וֹ (him) אָ֑נִי (It is I). לֵ֛ךְ (Go), אֱמֹ֥ר (tell) לַאדֹנֶ֖יךָ (your master), הִנֵּ֥ה (Behold), אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃ (Elijah).

9  וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (And he said), מֶ֣ה (How) חָטָ֑אתִי (have I sinned), כִּֽי־ (that) אַתָּ֞ה (you) נֹתֵ֧ן (are giving) אֶֽת־ (-) עַבְדְּךָ֛ (your servant) בְּיַד־ (into the hand) אַחְאָ֖ב (of Ahab), לַהֲמִיתֵֽנִי׃ (to kill me). 10  חַ֣י׀ (As lives) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ (your God), אִם־ (rather) יֶשׁ־ (there is) גּ֤וֹי (nation) וּמַמְלָכָה֙ (or kingdom) אֲ֠שֶׁר (where) לֹֽא־ (not) שָׁלַ֨ח (has sent) אֲדֹנִ֥י (my master) שָׁם֙ (there) לְבַקֶּשְׁךָ֔ (to hunt for you). וְאָמְר֖וּ (And they said), אָ֑יִן (He is not here). וְהִשְׁבִּ֤יעַ (And he took an oath) אֶת־ (from) הַמַּמְלָכָה֙ (the kingdom) וְאֶת־ (or) הַגּ֔וֹי (the nation) כִּ֖י (that) לֹ֥א (not) יִמְצָאֶֽכָּה׃ (they could find you). 11  וְעַתָּ֖ה (And) אַתָּ֣ה (you) אֹמֵ֑ר (say), לֵ֛ךְ (Go), אֱמֹ֥ר (tell) לַאדֹנֶ֖יךָ (your master): הִנֵּ֥ה (Behold), אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃ (Elijah)!

12  וְהָיָ֞ה (And it shall come to pass) אֲנִ֣י׀ (when I) אֵלֵ֣ךְ (am gone) מֵאִתָּ֗ךְ (from you), וְר֨וּחַ (that the Spirit) יְהוָ֤ה׀ (of YHWH) יִֽשָּׂאֲךָ֙ (will carry you) עַ֚ל (to) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (a place that) לֹֽא־ (not) אֵדָ֔ע (I know). וּבָ֨אתִי (And when I go) לְהַגִּ֧יד (and tell) לְאַחְאָ֛ב (Ahab), וְלֹ֥א (and not) יִֽמְצָאֲךָ֖ (does he find you), וַהֲרָגָ֑נִי (and he will kill me). וְעַבְדְּךָ֛ (And I your servant) יָרֵ֥א (have feared) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) מִנְּעֻרָֽי׃ (from my youth). 13  הֲלֹֽא־ (Was not) הֻגַּ֤ד (it reported) לַֽאדֹנִי֙ (to my lord) אֵ֣ת (-) אֲשֶׁר־ (what) עָשִׂ֔יתִי (I did) בַּהֲרֹ֣ג (when killed) אִיזֶ֔בֶל (Jezebel) אֵ֖ת (-) נְבִיאֵ֣י (the prophets) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וָאַחְבִּא֩ (that I hid) מִנְּבִיאֵ֨י (of the prophets) יְהוָ֜ה (of YHWH) מֵ֣אָה (a hundred) אִ֗ישׁ (men) חֲמִשִּׁ֨ים (fifty) חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים (by fifty) אִישׁ֙ (-) בַּמְּעָרָ֔ה (in the cave) וָאֲכַלְכְּלֵ֖ם (and I sustained them) לֶ֥חֶם (with bread) וָמָֽיִם׃ (and water)? 14  וְעַתָּה֙ (And) אַתָּ֣ה (you) אֹמֵ֔ר (say), לֵ֛ךְ (Go), אֱמֹ֥ר (tell) לַֽאדֹנֶ֖יךָ (your master): הִנֵּ֣ה (Behold), אֵלִיָּ֑הוּ (Elijah). וַהֲרָגָֽנִי׃ס (And He will kill me)!

15  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And said) אֵֽלִיָּ֔הוּ (Elijah), חַ֚י (As lives) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH) צְבָא֔וֹת (of Hosts), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) עָמַ֖דְתִּי (I stand) לְפָנָ֑יו (before), כִּ֥י (I will surely) הַיּ֖וֹם (today) אֵרָאֶ֥ה (present myself) אֵלָֽיו׃ (to him).

Elijah on Mount Carmel

16  וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ (And went) עֹבַדְיָ֛הוּ (Obadiah) לִקְרַ֥את (to meet) אַחְאָ֖ב (Ahab), וַיַּגֶּד־ (and reported) ל֑וֹ (to him), וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ (and went) אַחְאָ֖ב (Ahab) לִקְרַ֥את (to meet) אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃ (Elijah). 17  וַיְהִ֛י (And it came to pass), כִּרְא֥וֹת (when saw) אַחְאָ֖ב (Ahab) אֶת־ (-) אֵלִיָּ֑הוּ (Elijah), וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (that said) אַחְאָב֙ (Ahab) אֵלָ֔יו (to him), הַאַתָּ֥ה (Are you) זֶ֖ה (he)— עֹכֵ֥ר (O troubler) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel)?

18  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he answered), לֹ֤א (Not) עָכַ֙רְתִּי֙ (I have troubled) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), כִּ֥י (but) אִם־ (rather) אַתָּ֖ה (you) וּבֵ֣ית (and the house) אָבִ֑יךָ (of your father have) בַּֽעֲזָבְכֶם֙ (in your⁺ forsaking) אֶת־ (-) מִצְוֺ֣ת (the commandments) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ (and have followed) אַחֲרֵ֥י (after) הַבְּעָלִֽים׃ (the Baals). 19  וְעַתָּ֗ה (And now) שְׁלַ֨ח (send), קְבֹ֥ץ (gather) אֵלַ֛י (to me) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) אֶל־ (to) הַ֣ר (Mount) הַכַּרְמֶ֑ל (Carmel), וְאֶת־ (and) נְבִיאֵ֨י (the prophets) הַבַּ֜עַל (of the Baal) אַרְבַּ֧ע (four) מֵא֣וֹת (hundred) וַחֲמִשִּׁ֗ים (and fifty), וּנְבִיאֵ֤י (and the prophets) הָֽאֲשֵׁרָה֙ (of Asherah) אַרְבַּ֣ע (four) מֵא֔וֹת (hundred), אֹכְלֵ֖י (who eat at) שֻׁלְחַ֥ן (table) אִיזָֽבֶל׃ (of Jezebel).

20  וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח (And sent) אַחְאָ֖ב (Ahab) בְּכָל־ (for all) בְּנֵ֣י (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel), וַיִּקְבֹּ֥ץ (and he gathered together) אֶת־ (-) הַנְּבִיאִ֖ים (the prophets) אֶל־ (to) הַ֥ר (Mount) הַכַּרְמֶֽל׃ (Carmel). 21  וַיִּגַּ֨שׁ (And came) אֵלִיָּ֜הוּ (Elijah) אֶל־ (to) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֗ם (the people) וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and said), עַד־ (Until) מָתַ֞י (when) אַתֶּ֣ם (you⁺) פֹּסְחִים֮ (will pass over) עַל־ (between) שְׁתֵּ֣י (the two) הַסְּעִפִּים֒ (opinions)? אִם־ (If) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH is) הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ (God), לְכ֣וּ (follow) אַחֲרָ֔יו (him); וְאִם־ (but if) הַבַּ֖עַל (the Baal), לְכ֣וּ (follow) אַחֲרָ֑יו (him).

וְלֹֽא־ (And not) עָנ֥וּ (did answer) הָעָ֛ם (the people) אֹת֖וֹ (Him) דָּבָֽר׃ (a word).

22  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֵלִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (Elijah) אֶל־ (to) הָעָ֔ם (the people), אֲנִ֞י (I) נוֹתַ֧רְתִּי (am left), נָבִ֛יא (a prophet) לַיהוָ֖ה (of YHWH), לְבַדִּ֑י (alone). וּנְבִיאֵ֣י (And the prophets) הַבַּ֔עַל (of the Baal) אַרְבַּע־ (are four) מֵא֥וֹת (hundred) וַחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים (and fifty) אִֽישׁ׃ (men). 23  וְיִתְּנוּ־ (And let them give) לָ֜נוּ (to us) שְׁנַ֣יִם (two) פָּרִ֗ים (bulls), וְיִבְחֲר֣וּ (and let them choose) לָהֶם֩ (for themselves) הַפָּ֨ר (bull) הָאֶחָ֜ד (one), וִֽינַתְּחֻ֗הוּ (and let them cut it into pieces), וְיָשִׂ֙ימוּ֙ (and let them set it) עַל־ (on) הָ֣עֵצִ֔ים (the wood), וְאֵ֖שׁ (and a fire) לֹ֣א (not) יָשִׂ֑ימוּ (they will set). וַאֲנִ֞י (And I) אֶעֱשֶׂ֣ה׀ (will prepare) אֶת־ (-) הַפָּ֣ר (bull) הָאֶחָ֗ד (one), וְנָֽתַתִּי֙ (and lay it) עַל־ (on) הָ֣עֵצִ֔ים (the wood), וְאֵ֖שׁ (and a fire) לֹ֥א (not) אָשִֽׂים׃ (I will set). 24  וּקְרָאתֶ֞ם (And you⁺ call) בְּשֵׁ֣ם (on the name) אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֗ם (of your⁺ gods), וַֽאֲנִי֙ (and I) אֶקְרָ֣א (will call) בְשֵׁם־ (on the name) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH). וְהָיָ֧ה (And) הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים (the God) אֲשֶׁר־ (who) יַעֲנֶ֥ה (answers) בָאֵ֖שׁ (by the fire), ה֣וּא (He is) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (God).

וַיַּ֧עַן (And answered) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֛ם (the people) וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ (and said), ט֥וֹב (Well) הַדָּבָֽר׃ (spoken).

25  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֵלִיָּ֜הוּ (Elijah) לִנְבִיאֵ֣י (to the prophets) הַבַּ֗עַל (of the Baal), בַּחֲר֨וּ (Choose) לָכֶ֜ם (for yourselves) הַפָּ֤ר (bull) הָֽאֶחָד֙ (one) וַעֲשׂ֣וּ (and prepare it) רִאשֹׁנָ֔ה (first), כִּ֥י (for) אַתֶּ֖ם (you⁺ are) הָרַבִּ֑ים (many). וְקִרְאוּ֙ (And call) בְּשֵׁ֣ם (on the name) אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם (of your⁺ god), וְאֵ֖שׁ (and a fire) לֹ֥א (not) תָשִֽׂימוּ׃ (do set).

26  וַ֠יִּקְחוּ (And they took) אֶת־ (-) הַפָּ֨ר (the bull) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) נָתַ֣ן (was given) לָהֶם֮ (to them), וַֽיַּעֲשׂוּ֒ (and they prepared it) וַיִּקְרְא֣וּ (and called) בְשֵׁם־ (on the name) הַ֠בַּעַל (of the Baal) מֵהַבֹּ֨קֶר (from the morning) וְעַד־ (and until) הַצָּהֳרַ֤יִם (the noon), לֵאמֹר֙ (saying), הַבַּ֣עַל (O Baal), עֲנֵ֔נוּ (answer us).

וְאֵ֥ין (And there was no) ק֖וֹל (voice), וְאֵ֣ין (and no one) עֹנֶ֑ה (answered). וַֽיְפַסְּח֔וּ (And they leaped) עַל־ (about) הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ (the altar) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשָֽׂה׃ (they had made).

27  וַיְהִ֨י (And it came to pass) בַֽצָּהֳרַ֜יִם (at noon), וַיְהַתֵּ֧ל (that mocked) בָּהֶ֣ם (them) אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ (Elijah) וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and said), קִרְא֤וּ (Call out) בְקוֹל־ (in a voice) גָּדוֹל֙ (louder), כִּֽי־ (for) אֱלֹהִ֣ים (a god) ה֔וּא (he is). כִּ֣י (Either) שִׂ֧יחַ (he is meditating), וְכִֽי־ (or) שִׂ֛יג (is busy) ל֖וֹ (he), וְכִֽי־ (or) דֶ֣רֶךְ (is on a journey) ל֑וֹ (he), אוּלַ֛י (or perhaps) יָשֵׁ֥ן (is sleeping) ה֖וּא (he) וְיִקָֽץ׃ (and must be awakened).

28  וַֽיִּקְרְאוּ֙ (And they called out) בְּק֣וֹל (in a voice) גָּד֔וֹל (loud), וַיִּתְגֹּֽדְדוּ֙ (and they cut themselves) כְּמִשְׁפָּטָ֔ם (according to their custom) בַּחֲרָב֖וֹת (with the swords) וּבָֽרְמָחִ֑ים (and with the spears), עַד־ (until) שְׁפָךְ־ (gushed out) דָּ֖ם (the blood) עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (over them).

29  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And) כַּעֲבֹ֣ר (when was past) הַֽצָּהֳרַ֔יִם (the noon) וַיִּֽתְנַבְּא֔וּ (and they prophesied) עַ֖ד (until) לַעֲל֣וֹת (the going up) הַמִּנְחָ֑ה (of the sacrifice), וְאֵֽין־ (and there was no) ק֥וֹל (voice), וְאֵין־ (and no one) עֹנֶ֖ה (answered), וְאֵ֥ין (and no one) קָֽשֶׁב׃ (paid attention).

30  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֵלִיָּ֤הוּ (Elijah) לְכָל־ (to all) הָעָם֙ (the people), גְּשׁ֣וּ (Come near) אֵלַ֔י (to me). וַיִּגְּשׁ֥וּ (And came near) כָל־ (all) הָעָ֖ם (the people) אֵלָ֑יו (to him), וַיְרַפֵּ֛א (and he repaired) אֶת־ (-) מִזְבַּ֥ח (the altar) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) הֶהָרֽוּס׃ (that had been torn down).

31  וַיִּקַּ֣ח (And took) אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ (Elijah) שְׁתֵּ֤ים (two) עֶשְׂרֵה֙ (and ten) אֲבָנִ֔ים (stones) כְּמִסְפַּ֖ר (according to the number) שִׁבְטֵ֣י (of the tribes) בְנֵֽי־ (of the sons) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (of Jacob), אֲשֶׁר֩ (whom) הָיָ֨ה (had come) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֤ה (of YHWH) אֵלָיו֙ (to them), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (Israel) יִהְיֶ֥ה (shall be) שְׁמֶֽךָ׃ (your name). 32  וַיִּבְנֶ֧ה (And he built) אֶת־ (with) הָאֲבָנִ֛ים (the stones) מִזְבֵּ֖חַ (an altar) בְּשֵׁ֣ם (in the name) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וַיַּ֣עַשׂ (and he made) תְּעָלָ֗ה (a trench) כְּבֵית֙ (like the house) סָאתַ֣יִם (of two seahs) זֶ֔רַע (of seed) סָבִ֖יב (around) לַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃ (the altar).

33  וַֽיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְ (And he arranged) אֶת־ (-) הָֽעֵצִ֑ים (the wood), וַיְנַתַּח֙ (and he cut into pieces) אֶת־ (-) הַפָּ֔ר (the bull), וַיָּ֖שֶׂם (and laid it) עַל־ (on) הָעֵצִֽים׃ (the wood). 34  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said), מִלְא֨וּ (Fill) אַרְבָּעָ֤ה (four) כַדִּים֙ (pitchers), מַ֔יִם (waterpots), וְיִֽצְק֥וּ (and pour it) עַל־ (on) הָעֹלָ֖ה (the burnt offering) וְעַל־ (and on) הָעֵצִ֑ים (the wood).

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And he said), שְׁנוּ֙ (Do it a second time). וַיִּשְׁנ֔וּ (And they did it a second time).

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And he said) שַׁלֵּ֖שׁוּ (Do it a third time). וַיְשַׁלֵּֽשׁוּ׃ (And they did it a third time).

35  וַיֵּלְכ֣וּ (And ran) הַמַּ֔יִם (the water) סָבִ֖יב (around) לַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ (the altar), וְגַ֥ם (and even) אֶת־ (-) הַתְּעָלָ֖ה (the trench) מִלֵּא־ (he filled) מָֽיִם׃ (with water).

Elijah’s Prayer

36  וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass) בַּעֲל֣וֹת (at the going up) הַמִּנְחָ֗ה (of the sacrifice), וַיִּגַּ֞שׁ (that came near) אֵלִיָּ֣הוּ (Elijah) הַנָּבִיא֮ (the prophet) וַיֹּאמַר֒ (and said), יְהוָ֗ה (O YHWH) אֱלֹהֵי֙ (God) אַבְרָהָם֙ (of Abraham), יִצְחָ֣ק (Isaac), וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (and Israel), הַיּ֣וֹם (this day) יִוָּדַ֗ע (let it be known) כִּֽי־ (that) אַתָּ֧ה (You are) אֱלֹהִ֛ים (God) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (in Israel), וַאֲנִ֣י (and I am) עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ (Your servant), וּבְדִבְרֶיךָ (and at Your word) עָשִׂ֔יתִי (I have done) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַדְּבָרִ֖ים (the things) הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (these). 37  עֲנֵ֤נִי (Answer me) יְהוָה֙ (O YHWH)! עֲנֵ֔נִי (Answer me), וְיֵֽדְעוּ֙ (that may know) הָעָ֣ם (the people) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) כִּֽי־ (that) אַתָּ֥ה (You are) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (God) וְאַתָּ֛ה (and You) הֲסִבֹּ֥תָ (have turned again) אֶת־ (-) לִבָּ֖ם (their hearts) אֲחֹרַנִּֽית׃ (back).

38  וַתִּפֹּ֣ל (And fell) אֵשׁ־ (the fire) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) וַתֹּ֤אכַל (and consumed) אֶת־ (-) הָֽעֹלָה֙ (the burnt offering), וְאֶת־ (and) הָ֣עֵצִ֔ים (the wood), וְאֶת־ (and) הָאֲבָנִ֖ים (the stones), וְאֶת־ (and) הֶעָפָ֑ר (the dust). וְאֶת־ (And) הַמַּ֥יִם (the water) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) בַּתְּעָלָ֖ה (in the trench) לִחֵֽכָה׃ (it licked up).

39  וַיַּרְא֙ (And saw it) כָּל־ (all) הָעָ֔ם (the people) וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ (and they fell), עַל־ (on) פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם (their faces) וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ (and said), יְהוָה֙ (YHWH), ה֣וּא (He is) הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים (God)! יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), ה֥וּא (He is) הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ (God)!

40  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ (Elijah) לָהֶ֜ם (to them), תִּפְשׂ֣וּ׀ (Seize) אֶת־ (-) נְבִיאֵ֣י (the prophets) הַבַּ֗עַל (of the Baal)! אִ֛ישׁ (A man) אַל־ (not) יִמָּלֵ֥ט (do let escape) מֵהֶ֖ם (of them). וַֽיִּתְפְּשׂ֑וּם (And they seized them), וַיּוֹרִדֵ֤ם (and brought them down) אֵלִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (Elijah) אֶל־ (to) נַ֣חַל (the Valley) קִישׁ֔וֹן (Kishon) וַיִּשְׁחָטֵ֖ם (and slaughtered them) שָֽׁם׃ (there).

Yahweh Sends Rain

41  וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) אֵלִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (Elijah) לְאַחְאָ֔ב (to Ahab), עֲלֵ֖ה (Go up), אֱכֹ֣ל (eat) וּשְׁתֵ֑ה (and drink), כִּי־ (because) ק֖וֹל (of the sound) הֲמ֥וֹן (of the roar) הַגָּֽשֶׁם׃ (of the rain).

42  וַיַּעֲלֶ֥ה (And went up) אַחְאָ֖ב (Ahab) לֶאֱכֹ֣ל (to eat) וְלִשְׁתּ֑וֹת (and drink). וְאֵ֨לִיָּ֜הוּ (And Elijah) עָלָ֨ה (went up) אֶל־ (to) רֹ֤אשׁ (the top) הַכַּרְמֶל֙ (of Carmel). וַיִּגְהַ֣ר (And he bowed down) אַ֔רְצָה (on the ground) וַיָּ֥שֶׂם (and put) פָּנָ֖יו (his face) בֵּ֥ין (between) בְּרָכוֹ׃ (his knees), 43  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (and he said) אֶֽל־ (to) נַעֲר֗וֹ (his servant), עֲלֵֽה־ (Go up) נָא֙ (now), הַבֵּ֣ט (look) דֶּֽרֶךְ־ (toward the way) יָ֔ם (the sea).

וַיַּ֙עַל֙ (And he went up) וַיַּבֵּ֔ט (and looked) וַיֹּ֖אמֶר (and said), אֵ֣ין (There is not) מְא֑וּמָה (anything).

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר (And he said), שֻׁ֖ב (Go again) שֶׁ֥בַע (seven) פְּעָמִֽים׃ (times).

44  וַֽיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass) בַּשְּׁבִעִ֔ית (on the seventh time) וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (that he said), הִנֵּה־ (There is) עָ֛ב (a cloud) קְטַנָּ֥ה (as small) כְּכַף־ (as the palm) אִ֖ישׁ (of man) עֹלָ֣ה (rising) מִיָּ֑ם (out of the sea).

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And he said), עֲלֵ֨ה (Go up), אֱמֹ֤ר (say) אֶל־ (to) אַחְאָב֙ (Ahab), אֱסֹ֣ר (Harness) וָרֵ֔ד (and go down), וְלֹ֥א (not) יַעַצָרְכָ֖ה (do let restrain you) הַגָּֽשֶׁם׃ (the rain).

45  וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass) עַד־ (in the meantime) כֹּ֣ה (thus), וְעַד־ (and in) כֹּ֗ה (the meantime) וְהַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ (and the heavens) הִֽתְקַדְּרוּ֙ (became black) עָבִ֣ים (with clouds) וְר֔וּחַ (and wind), וַיְהִ֖י (and there was) גֶּ֣שֶׁם (a rain) גָּד֑וֹל (heavy). וַיִּרְכַּ֥ב (And rode away) אַחְאָ֖ב (Ahab) וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ (and went) יִזְרְעֶֽאלָה׃ (to Jezreel).

46  וְיַד־ (And the hand) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) הָֽיְתָה֙ (came) אֶל־ (upon) אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ (Elijah), וַיְשַׁנֵּ֖ס (and he girded up) מָתְנָ֑יו (his loins) וַיָּ֙רָץ֙ (and ran) לִפְנֵ֣י (ahead) אַחְאָ֔ב (of Ahab) עַד־ (to) בֹּאֲכָ֖ה (the entrance) יִזְרְעֶֽאלָה׃ (of Jezreel).
