The Ravens Feed Elijah

1  וַיֹּאמֶר֩ (And said) אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ (Elijah) הַתִּשְׁבִּ֜י (the Tishbite) מִתֹּשָׁבֵ֣י (from the Tishbites) גִלְעָד֮ (of Gilead) אֶל־ (to) אַחְאָב֒ (Ahab), חַי־ (As lives) יְהוָ֞ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֤י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (whom) עָמַ֣דְתִּי (I stand) לְפָנָ֔יו (before), אִם־ (not) יִהְיֶ֛ה (there shall be) הַשָּׁנִ֥ים (years) הָאֵ֖לֶּה (these) טַ֣ל (dew) וּמָטָ֑ר (and rain) כִּ֖י (except) אִם־ (if) לְפִ֥י (at) דְבָרִֽי׃ס (my word).

2  וַיְהִ֥י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלָ֥יו (to him) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 3  לֵ֣ךְ (Go) מִזֶּ֔ה (from this place) וּפָנִ֥יתָ (and turn) לְּךָ֖ (for yourself) קֵ֑דְמָה (eastward), וְנִסְתַּרְתָּ֙ (and hide) בְּנַ֣חַל (by the Brook) כְּרִ֔ית (Cherith) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that) עַל־ (is on) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ (the Jordan). 4  וְהָיָ֖ה (And it will come to pass), מֵהַנַּ֣חַל (from the brook) תִּשְׁתֶּ֑ה (that you shall drink), וְאֶת־ (and) הָעֹרְבִ֣ים (the ravens) צִוִּ֔יתִי (I have commanded) לְכַלְכֶּלְךָ֖ (to sustain you) שָֽׁם׃ (there).

5  וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ (And he went) וַיַּ֖עַשׂ (and did) כִּדְבַ֣ר (according to the word) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH). וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ (And he went) וַיֵּ֙שֶׁב֙ (and stayed) בְּנַ֣חַל (by the Brook) כְּרִ֔ית (of Cherith) אֲשֶׁ֖ר (that) עַל־ (is on) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃ (of the Jordan). 6  וְהָעֹרְבִ֗ים (And the ravens) מְבִיאִ֨ים (brought) ל֜וֹ (to him) לֶ֤חֶם (bread) וּבָשָׂר֙ (and flesh) בַּבֹּ֔קֶר (in the morning), וְלֶ֥חֶם (and bread) וּבָשָׂ֖ר (and flesh) בָּעָ֑רֶב (in the evening), וּמִן־ (and from) הַנַּ֖חַל (the brook) יִשְׁתֶּֽה׃ (he drank). 7  וַיְהִ֛י (And it came to pass) מִקֵּ֥ץ (at the end) יָמִ֖ים (of some days) וַיִּיבַ֣שׁ (that dried up) הַנָּ֑חַל (the brook) כִּ֛י (because) לֹֽא־ (not) הָיָ֥ה (there had been) גֶ֖שֶׁם (rain) בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ס (in the land).

The Widow of Zarephath

8  וַיְהִ֥י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֵלָ֥יו (to him) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 9  ק֣וּם (Arise), לֵ֤ךְ (go) צָרְפַ֙תָה֙ (to Zarephath), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which is) לְצִיד֔וֹן (unto Sidon), וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֖ (and dwell) שָׁ֑ם (there). הִנֵּ֨ה (Behold), צִוִּ֥יתִי (I have commanded) שָׁ֛ם (there) אִשָּׁ֥ה (a woman), אַלְמָנָ֖ה (a widow), לְכַלְכְּלֶֽךָ׃ (to provide for you).

10  וַיָּ֣קָם׀ (And he arose) וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ (and went) צָרְפַ֗תָה (to Zarephath). וַיָּבֹא֙ (And he came) אֶל־ (to) פֶּ֣תַח (the gate) הָעִ֔יר (of the city), וְהִנֵּֽה־ (and behold) שָׁ֛ם (there) אִשָּׁ֥ה (a woman), אַלְמָנָ֖ה (a widow), מְקֹשֶׁ֣שֶׁת (was gathering) עֵצִ֑ים (sticks). וַיִּקְרָ֤א (And he called) אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ (to her) וַיֹּאמַ֔ר (and said), קְחִי־ (Bring) נָ֨א (please) לִ֧י (me) מְעַט־ (a little) מַ֛יִם (water) בַּכְּלִ֖י (in the vessel), וְאֶשְׁתֶּֽה׃ (that I may drink). 11  וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ (And she was going) לָקַ֑חַת (to get it), וַיִּקְרָ֤א (and he called) אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ (to her) וַיֹּאמַ֔ר (and said), לִֽקְחִי־ (Bring) נָ֥א (please) לִ֛י (me) פַּת־ (a morsel) לֶ֖חֶם (of bread) בְּיָדֵֽךְ׃ (in your hand).

12  וַתֹּ֗אמֶר (And she said), חַי־ (As lives) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ (your God), אִם־ (not) יֶשׁ־ (is there) לִ֣י (unto me) מָע֔וֹג (bread), כִּ֣י (but) אִם־ (only) מְלֹ֤א (the fullness) כַף־ (of a palm) קֶ֙מַח֙ (of flour) בַּכַּ֔ד (in the jar), וּמְעַט־ (and a little) שֶׁ֖מֶן (oil) בַּצַּפָּ֑חַת (in the jug). וְהִנְנִ֨י (And behold), מְקֹשֶׁ֜שֶׁת (I am gathering) שְׁנַ֣יִם (two) עֵצִ֗ים (sticks), וּבָ֙אתִי֙ (that I may go in) וַעֲשִׂיתִ֙יהוּ֙ (and prepare it) לִ֣י (for myself) וְלִבְנִ֔י (and my son), וַאֲכַלְנֻ֖הוּ (that we may eat it) וָמָֽתְנוּ׃ (and die).

13  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) אֵלֶ֤יהָ (to her) אֵלִיָּ֙הוּ֙ (Elijah), אַל־ (Not) תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י (do fear). בֹּ֖אִי (Go) עֲשִׂ֣י (do) כִדְבָרֵ֑ךְ (according to your word). אַ֣ךְ (However), עֲשִׂי־ (make) לִ֣י (for me) מִ֠שָּׁם (from it) עֻגָ֨ה (a cake) קְטַנָּ֤ה (small) בָרִאשֹׁנָה֙ (first), וְהוֹצֵ֣אתְ (and bring it) לִ֔י (to me) וְלָ֣ךְ (and for yourself) וְלִבְנֵ֔ךְ (and your son). תַּעֲשִׂ֖י (Make some) בָּאַחֲרֹנָֽה׃ס (afterward). 14  כִּ֣י (For) כֹה֩ (thus) אָמַ֨ר (says) יְהוָ֜ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel), כַּ֤ד (The jar) הַקֶּ֙מַח֙ (of flour) לֹ֣א (not) תִכְלָ֔ה (shall be used up) וְצַפַּ֥חַת (and the jug) הַשֶּׁ֖מֶן (of the oil) לֹ֣א (not) תֶחְסָ֑ר (shall run dry) עַ֠ד (until) י֧וֹם (the day) תִּתֶּן (of giving) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) גֶּ֖שֶׁם (rain) עַל־ (on) פְּנֵ֥י (the face) הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ (of the earth).

15  וַתֵּ֥לֶךְ (And she went away) וַתַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה (and did) כִּדְבַ֣ר (according to the word) אֵלִיָּ֑הוּ (of Elijah), וַתֹּ֧אכַל (and she ate) הוּא־ (she) וָהִיא (and he) וּבֵיתָ֖הּ (and her house) יָמִֽים׃ (for days). 16  כַּ֤ד (The jar) הַקֶּ֙מַח֙ (of the flour) לֹ֣א (not) כָלָ֔תָה (was used up) וְצַפַּ֥חַת (and the jug) הַשֶּׁ֖מֶן (of the oil) לֹ֣א (and not) חָסֵ֑ר (did run dry), כִּדְבַ֣ר (according to the word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) דִּבֶּ֖ר (He spoke) בְּיַ֥ד (by) אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃פ (Elijah).

Elijah Raises the Widow’s Son

17  וַיְהִ֗י (And it came to pass) אַחַר֙ (after) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the things) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these), חָלָ֕ה (that became sick) בֶּן־ (the son) הָאִשָּׁ֖ה (of the woman) בַּעֲלַ֣ת (who owned) הַבָּ֑יִת (the house). וַיְהִ֤י (And was) חָלְיוֹ֙ (his sickness) חָזָ֣ק (so strong) מְאֹ֔ד (very) עַ֛ד (that) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (-) לֹא־ (not) נֽוֹתְרָה־ (remained) בּ֖וֹ (in him) נְשָׁמָֽה׃ (breath). 18  וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And she said) אֶל־ (to) אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ (Elijah), מַה־ (What) לִּ֥י (to me) וָלָ֖ךְ (and to you), אִ֣ישׁ (O man) הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים (of God)? בָּ֧אתָ (Have you come) אֵלַ֛י (to me) לְהַזְכִּ֥יר (to bring to remembrance) אֶת־ (-) עֲוֺנִ֖י (my sin) וּלְהָמִ֥ית (and to kill) אֶת־ (-) בְּנִֽי׃ (my son)?

19  וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And he said) אֵלֶ֖יהָ (to her), תְּנִֽי־ (Give) לִ֣י (to me) אֶת־ (-) בְּנֵ֑ךְ (your son).

וַיִּקָּחֵ֣הוּ (And he took him) מֵחֵיקָ֗הּ (out of her arms) וַֽיַּעֲלֵ֙הוּ֙ (and carried him) אֶל־ (to) הָעֲלִיָּ֗ה (the upper room) אֲשֶׁר־ (where) הוּא֙ (he) יֹשֵׁ֣ב (was staying) שָׁ֔ם (there), וַיַּשְׁכִּבֵ֖הוּ (and he laid him down) עַל־ (on) מִטָּתֽוֹ׃ (his own bed). 20  וַיִּקְרָ֥א (And he cried out) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (and said), יְהוָ֣ה (O YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֔י (my God) הֲ֠גַם (also) עַל־ (on) הָאַלְמָנָ֞ה (the widow) אֲשֶׁר־ (whom) אֲנִ֨י (I) מִתְגּוֹרֵ֥ר (lodge) עִמָּ֛הּ (with her) הֲרֵע֖וֹתָ (have You brought tragedy) לְהָמִ֥ית (by killing) אֶת־ (-) בְּנָֽהּ׃ (her son)? 21  וַיִּתְמֹדֵ֤ד (And he stretched himself out) עַל־ (on) הַיֶּ֙לֶד֙ (the child) שָׁלֹ֣שׁ (three) פְּעָמִ֔ים (times), וַיִּקְרָ֥א (and he cried out) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH), וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (and said), יְהוָ֣ה (O YHWH) אֱלֹהָ֔י (my God), תָּ֥שָׁב (let come back). נָ֛א (Please), נֶֽפֶשׁ־ (the soul) הַיֶּ֥לֶד (of the child) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) עַל־ (into) קִרְבּֽוֹ׃ (his midst).

22  וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע (And listened) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בְּק֣וֹל (to the voice) אֵלִיָּ֑הוּ (of Elijah), וַתָּ֧שָׁב (and came back) נֶֽפֶשׁ־ (the soul) הַיֶּ֛לֶד (of the child) עַל־ (into) קִרְבּ֖וֹ (his midst), וַיֶּֽחִי׃ (and he revived). 23  וַיִּקַּ֨ח (And took) אֵלִיָּ֜הוּ (Elijah) אֶת־ (-) הַיֶּ֗לֶד (the child), וַיֹּרִדֵ֤הוּ (and brought him down) מִן־ (from) הָעֲלִיָּה֙ (the upper room) הַבַּ֔יְתָה (into the house), וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖הוּ (and he gave him) לְאִמּ֑וֹ (to his mother). וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And said) אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ (Elijah), רְאִ֖י (See), חַ֥י (lives) בְּנֵֽךְ׃ (your son).

24  וַתֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ (the woman) אֶל־ (to) אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ (Elijah), עַתָּה֙ (Now) זֶ֣ה (by this) יָדַ֔עְתִּי (I know) כִּ֛י (that) אִ֥ישׁ (a man) אֱלֹהִ֖ים (of God) אָ֑תָּה (you are), וּדְבַר־ (and the word) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) בְּפִ֖יךָ (in your mouth) אֱמֶֽת׃פ (is the truth).
