Jehu’s Prophecy against Baasha

1  וַיְהִ֤י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) אֶל־ (to) יֵה֣וּא (Jehu) בֶן־ (son) חֲנָ֔נִי (of Hanani) עַל־ (against) בַּעְשָׁ֖א (Baasha), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  יַ֗עַן (Because) אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) הֲרִימֹתִ֙יךָ֙ (I raised you up) מִן־ (out) הֶ֣עָפָ֔ר (of the dust) וָאֶתֶּנְךָ֣ (and made you) נָגִ֔יד (ruler) עַ֖ל (over) עַמִּ֣י (My people) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel)— וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ׀ (and you have walked) בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ (in the way) יָרָבְעָ֗ם (of Jeroboam) וַֽתַּחֲטִא֙ (and have caused to sin) אֶת־ (-) עַמִּ֣י (My people) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel), לְהַכְעִיסֵ֖נִי (to provoke Me to anger) בְּחַטֹּאתָֽם׃ (with their sins)— 3  הִנְנִ֥י (surely) מַבְעִ֛יר (I will take away) אַחֲרֵ֥י (the posterity) בַעְשָׁ֖א (of Baasha) וְאַחֲרֵ֣י (and the posterity) בֵית֑וֹ (of his house), וְנָֽתַתִּי֙ (and I will make) אֶת־ (-) בֵּ֣יתְךָ֔ (your house) כְּבֵ֖ית (like the house) יָרָבְעָ֥ם (of Jeroboam) בֶּן־ (son) נְבָֽט׃ (of Nebat).

4  הַמֵּ֤ת (Whoever dies) לְבַעְשָׁא֙ (of Baasha) בָּעִ֔יר (in the city)

יֹֽאכְל֖וּ (shall eat) הַכְּלָבִ֑ים (the dogs),

וְהַמֵּ֥ת (and whoever dies) לוֹ֙ (of him) בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה (in the fields)

יֹאכְל֖וּ (shall eat) ע֥וֹף (the birds) הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃ (of the heavens).

5  וְיֶ֨תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the acts) בַעְשָׁ֛א (of Baasha), וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (and what) עָשָׂ֖ה (he did), וּגְבֽוּרָת֑וֹ (and his might), הֲלֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel)? 6  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And rested) בַּעְשָׁא֙ (Baasha) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers) וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר (and was buried) בְּתִרְצָ֑ה (in Tirzah). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) אֵלָ֥ה (Elah) בְנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ (in his place).

7  וְגַ֡ם (And also) בְּיַד־ (by the hand) יֵה֨וּא (of Jehu) בֶן־ (son) חֲנָ֜נִי (of Hanani) הַנָּבִ֗יא (the prophet), דְּבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֡ה (of YHWH) הָיָה֩ (came) אֶל־ (against) בַּעְשָׁ֨א (Baasha) וְאֶל־ (and) בֵּית֜וֹ (his house), וְעַ֥ל (and concerning) כָּל־ (all) הָרָעָ֣ה׀ (the evil) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשָׂ֣ה׀ (he did) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH) לְהַכְעִיסוֹ֙ (in provoking Him to anger) בְּמַעֲשֵׂ֣ה (with the work) יָדָ֔יו (of his hands), לִהְי֖וֹת (in being) כְּבֵ֣ית (like the house) יָרָבְעָ֑ם (of Jeroboam), וְעַ֥ל (and upon) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) הִכָּ֖ה (he had struck down) אֹתֽוֹ׃פ (him).

8  בִּשְׁנַ֨ת (In the year) עֶשְׂרִ֤ים (twenty) וָשֵׁשׁ֙ (and sixth) שָׁנָ֔ה (year) לְאָסָ֖א (of Asa) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), מָ֠לַךְ (became king) אֵלָ֨ה (Elah) בֶן־ (son) בַּעְשָׁ֧א (of Baasha) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (Israel) בְּתִרְצָ֖ה (in Tirzah), שְׁנָתָֽיִם׃ (two years).

9  וַיִּקְשֹׁ֤ר (And conspired) עָלָיו֙ (against him) עַבְדּ֣וֹ (his servant) זִמְרִ֔י (Zimri), שַׂ֖ר (commander) מַחֲצִ֣ית (of half) הָרָ֑כֶב (of the chariots). וְה֤וּא (And as he was) בְתִרְצָה֙ (in Tirzah) שֹׁתֶ֣ה (drinking) שִׁכּ֔וֹר (himself drunk) בֵּ֣ית (in the house) אַרְצָ֔א (of Arza), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) עַל־ (was over) הַבַּ֖יִת (the house) בְּתִרְצָֽה׃ (in Tirzah). 10  וַיָּבֹ֤א (And went in) זִמְרִי֙ (Zimri) וַיַּכֵּ֣הוּ (and struck him) וַיְמִיתֵ֔הוּ (and killed him) בִּשְׁנַת֙ (in the year) עֶשְׂרִ֣ים (twenty) וָשֶׁ֔בַע (and seventh) לְאָסָ֖א (of Asa) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah), וַיִּמְלֹ֖ךְ (and he reigned) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃ (in his place).

11  וַיְהִ֨י (And it came to pass) בְמָלְכ֜וֹ (when he began to reign) כְּשִׁבְתּ֣וֹ (at his sitting) עַל־ (on) כִּסְא֗וֹ (his throne), הִכָּה֙ (that he killed) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) בֵּ֣ית (the house) בַּעְשָׁ֔א (of Baasha). לֹֽא־ (Not) הִשְׁאִ֥יר (he did leave) ל֖וֹ (to him) מַשְׁתִּ֣ין (one who urinates) בְּקִ֑יר (against the wall), וְגֹאֲלָ֖יו (or of his redeemers), וְרֵעֵֽהוּ׃ (or of his friends). 12  וַיַּשְׁמֵ֣ד (And destroyed) זִמְרִ֔י (Zimri) אֵ֖ת (-) כָּל־ (all) בֵּ֣ית (the house) בַּעְשָׁ֑א (of Baasha) כִּדְבַ֤ר (according to the word) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (which) דִּבֶּ֣ר (He spoke) אֶל־ (against) בַּעְשָׁ֔א (Baasha) בְּיַ֖ד (by) יֵה֥וּא (Jehu) הַנָּבִֽיא׃ (the prophet) 13  אֶ֚ל (concerning) כָּל־ (all) חַטֹּ֣אות (the sins) בַּעְשָׁ֔א (of Baasha) וְחַטֹּ֖אות (and the sins) אֵלָ֣ה (of Elah) בְנ֑וֹ (his son), אֲשֶׁ֣ר (by which) חָטְא֗וּ (they had sinned), וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר (and by which) הֶחֱטִ֙יאוּ֙ (they had caused to sin) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) לְהַכְעִ֗יס (in provoking to anger) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בְּהַבְלֵיהֶֽם׃ (with their idols).

14  וְיֶ֛תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the acts) אֵלָ֖ה (of Elah) וְכָל־ (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (he did), הֲלֽוֹא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel)?

Zimri Reigns in Israel

15  בִּשְׁנַת֩ (In the year) עֶשְׂרִ֨ים (twenty) וָשֶׁ֜בַע (and seventh) שָׁנָ֗ה (year) לְאָסָא֙ (of Asa) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), מָלַ֥ךְ (had reigned) זִמְרִ֛י (Zimri) שִׁבְעַ֥ת (seven) יָמִ֖ים (days) בְּתִרְצָ֑ה (in Tirzah). וְהָעָ֣ם (And the people) חֹנִ֔ים (were encamped) עַֽל־ (against) גִּבְּת֖וֹן (Gibbethon), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which was) לַפְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (to the Philistines). 16  וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע (And heard it) הָעָם֙ (the people) הַחֹנִ֣ים (who were encamped), לֵאמֹ֔ר (saying), קָשַׁ֣ר (Has conspired) זִמְרִ֔י (Zimri) וְגַ֖ם (and also) הִכָּ֣ה (has killed) אֶת־ (-) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (the king). וַיַּמְלִ֣כוּ (And made king) כָֽל־ (all) יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל (Israel) אֶת־ (-) עָמְרִ֨י (Omri) שַׂר־ (the commander) צָבָ֧א (of the army) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (Israel) בַּיּ֥וֹם (day) הַה֖וּא (that) בַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃ (in the camp).

17  וַיַּעֲלֶ֥ה (And went up) עָמְרִ֛י (Omri) וְכָל־ (and all) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (Israel) עִמּ֖וֹ (with him) מִֽגִּבְּת֑וֹן (from Gibbethon), וַיָּצֻ֖רוּ (and they laid siege) עַל־ (against) תִּרְצָֽה׃ (Tirzah). 18  וַיְהִ֞י (And it came to pass) כִּרְא֤וֹת (when saw) זִמְרִי֙ (Zimri) כִּֽי־ (that) נִלְכְּדָ֣ה (was taken) הָעִ֔יר (the city), וַיָּבֹ֖א (that he went) אֶל־ (into) אַרְמ֣וֹן (the citadel) בֵּית־ (of house) הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ (of the king) וַיִּשְׂרֹ֨ף (and he burned down) עָלָ֧יו (upon himself) אֶת־ (-) בֵּֽית־ (the house) מֶ֛לֶךְ (of the king) בָּאֵ֖שׁ (with the fire). וַיָּמֹֽת׃ (And he died), 19  עַל־ (on account of) חַטָּאתוֹ (his sins) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) חָטָ֔א (he sinned) לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת (in doing) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ (in walking) בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ (in the way) יָרָבְעָ֔ם (of Jeroboam), וּבְחַטָּאתוֹ֙ (and in his sin) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֔ה (he did) לְהַחֲטִ֖יא (to cause to sin) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (Israel).

20  וְיֶ֙תֶר֙ (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֣י (of the acts) זִמְרִ֔י (of Zimri) וְקִשְׁר֖וֹ (and the treason) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (-) קָשָׁ֑ר (he committed), הֲלֹֽא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃פ (of Israel)?

Omri Reigns in Israel

21  אָ֧ז (Then) יֵחָלֵ֛ק (were divided) הָעָ֥ם (the people) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) לַחֵ֑צִי (into two parts). חֲצִ֨י (Half) הָעָ֜ם (of the people) הָ֠יָה (were) אַחֲרֵ֨י (behind) תִבְנִ֤י (Tibni) בֶן־ (son) גִּינַת֙ (of Ginath) לְהַמְלִיכ֔וֹ (to make him king), וְהַחֲצִ֖י (and half) אַחֲרֵ֥י (were behind) עָמְרִֽי׃ (Omri). 22  וַיֶּחֱזַ֤ק (And prevailed) הָעָם֙ (the people) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who) אַחֲרֵ֣י (were behind) עָמְרִ֔י (Omri) אֶת־ (over) הָעָ֕ם (the people) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) אַחֲרֵ֖י (were behind) תִּבְנִ֣י (Tibni) בֶן־ (son) גִּינַ֑ת (of Ginath), וַיָּ֣מָת (and died) תִּבְנִ֔י (Tibni) וַיִּמְלֹ֖ךְ (and reigned) עָמְרִֽי׃פ (Omri).

23  בִּשְׁנַת֩ (In the year) שְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים (thirty) וְאַחַ֜ת (and first) שָׁנָ֗ה (year) לְאָסָא֙ (of Asa) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), מָלַ֤ךְ (became king) עָמְרִי֙ (Omri) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) שְׁתֵּ֥ים (two) עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה (and ten) שָׁנָ֑ה (years). בְּתִרְצָ֖ה (In Tirzah) מָלַ֥ךְ (he rigned) שֵׁשׁ־ (Six) שָׁנִֽים׃ (years). 24  וַיִּ֜קֶן (And he bought) אֶת־ (-) הָהָ֥ר (the hill) שֹׁמְר֛וֹן (of Samaria) מֵ֥אֶת (from) שֶׁ֖מֶר (Shemer) בְּכִכְּרַ֣יִם (for two talents) כָּ֑סֶף (of silver), וַיִּ֙בֶן֙ (and he built on) אֶת־ (-) הָהָ֔ר (the hill) וַיִּקְרָ֗א (and called) אֶת־ (-) שֵׁ֤ם (the name) הָעִיר֙ (of the city) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) בָּנָ֔ה (he built) עַ֣ל (after) שֶׁם־ (the name) שֶׁ֔מֶר (of Shemer), אֲדֹנֵ֖י (lord) הָהָ֥ר (of the hill) שֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ (Samaria).

25  וַיַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה (And did) עָמְרִ֛י (Omri) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), וַיָּ֕רַע (and he did evil) מִכֹּ֖ל (more than all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who were) לְפָנָֽיו׃ (before him). 26  וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ (And for he walked) בְּכָל־ (in all) דֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ (the ways) יָרָבְעָ֣ם (of Jeroboam) בֶּן־ (son) נְבָ֔ט (of Nebat) וּבְחַטֹּאתָיו (and in his sin) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) הֶחֱטִ֖יא (he had caused to sin) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (Israel), לְהַכְעִ֗יס (provoking to anger) אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֥י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel) בְּהַבְלֵיהֶֽם׃ (with their idols).

27  וְיֶ֨תֶר (And the rest) דִּבְרֵ֤י (of the acts) עָמְרִי֙ (of Omri) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֔ה (he did), וּגְבוּרָת֖וֹ (and the might) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) עָשָׂ֑ה (he showed), הֲלֹֽא־ (are not) הֵ֣ם (they) כְּתוּבִ֗ים (written) עַל־ (in) סֵ֛פֶר (the Book) דִּבְרֵ֥י (of the Words) הַיָּמִ֖ים (of the Days) לְמַלְכֵ֥י (of the Kings) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel)?

28  וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב (And rested) עָמְרִי֙ (Omri) עִם־ (with) אֲבֹתָ֔יו (his fathers) וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר (and he was buried) בְּשֹׁמְר֑וֹן (in Samaria). וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ (And reigned) אַחְאָ֥ב (Ahab) בְּנ֖וֹ (his son) תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ (in his place).

Ahab Reigns in Israel, Marries Jezebel

29  וְאַחְאָ֣ב (And Ahab) בֶּן־ (son) עָמְרִ֗י (of Omri) מָלַךְ֙ (became king) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (Israel) בִּשְׁנַ֨ת (in the year) שְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים (of thirty) וּשְׁמֹנֶה֙ (and eighth) שָׁנָ֔ה (year) לְאָסָ֖א (of Asa) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah). וַ֠יִּמְלֹךְ (And reigned) אַחְאָ֨ב (Ahab) בֶּן־ (son) עָמְרִ֤י (Omri) עַל־ (over) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן (in Samaria) עֶשְׂרִ֥ים (twenty) וּשְׁתַּ֖יִם (and two) שָׁנָֽה׃ (years).

30  וַיַּ֨עַשׂ (And did) אַחְאָ֧ב (Ahab) בֶּן־ (son) עָמְרִ֛י (of Omri) הָרַ֖ע (evil) בְּעֵינֵ֣י (in the eyes) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) מִכֹּ֖ל (more than all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who were) לְפָנָֽיו׃ (before him). 31  וַיְהִי֙ (And it came to pass), הֲנָקֵ֣ל (as though had been slight) לֶכְתּ֔וֹ (his walking) בְּחַטֹּ֖אות (in the sins) יָרָבְעָ֣ם (of Jeroboam) בֶּן־ (son) נְבָ֑ט (of Nebat), וַיִּקַּ֨ח (that he took) אִשָּׁ֜ה (as wife) אֶת־ (-) אִיזֶ֗בֶל (Jezebel) בַּת־ (the daughter) אֶתְבַּ֙עַל֙ (of Ethbaal) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) צִידֹנִ֔ים (of the Sidonians). וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ (And he went) וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֣ד (and served) אֶת־ (-) הַבַּ֔עַל (the Baal) וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ (and worshiped) לֽוֹ׃ (unto him).

32  וַיָּ֥קֶם (And he set up) מִזְבֵּ֖חַ (an altar) לַבָּ֑עַל (for Baal) בֵּ֣ית (in the temple) הַבַּ֔עַל (of the Baal), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which) בָּנָ֖ה (he had built) בְּשֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃ (in Samaria). 33  וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (And made) אַחְאָ֖ב (Ahab) אֶת־ (-) הָאֲשֵׁרָ֑ה (an Asherah pole) וַיּ֨וֹסֶף (and added) אַחְאָ֜ב (Ahab) לַעֲשׂ֗וֹת (to act) לְהַכְעִיס֙ (to provoke to anger) אֶת־ (-) יְהֹוָה֙ (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) מִכֹּ֨ל (more than all) מַלְכֵ֣י (the kings) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) הָי֖וּ (were) לְפָנָֽיו׃ (before him).

34  בְּיָמָ֞יו (In his days) בָּנָ֥ה (built) חִיאֵ֛ל (Hiel) בֵּ֥ית (the Beth-) הָאֱלִ֖י (elite) אֶת־ (-) יְרִיחֹ֑ה (Jericho). בַּאֲבִירָ֨ם (With Abiram) בְּכֹר֜וֹ (his firstborn) יִסְּדָ֗הּ (He laid its foundation), וּבִשְׂגִיב (and with Segub) צְעִירוֹ֙ (his youngest) הִצִּ֣יב (he set up) דְּלָתֶ֔יהָ (its gates), כִּדְבַ֣ר (according to the word) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) דִּבֶּ֔ר (He had spoken) בְּיַ֖ד (by the hand of) יְהוֹשֻׁ֥עַ (Joshua) בִּן־ (son) נֽוּן׃ס (of Nun).
