Berean Study Bible Greetings to the ThessaloniansPaul writes with two trusted coworkers who had helped establish and strengthen the Thessalonian church. Silvanus, also called Silas, had accompanied Paul on his missionary work, and Timothy had served faithfully among the believers. Their names reflect the shared labor and concern behind the letter. 2Co 1:19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was proclaimed… To the church of the Thessalonians The letter is addressed to the body of believers in Thessalonica, a leading Macedonian city on an important Roman trade route. Paul had founded the church during his second missionary journey, and the believers had continued in faith despite opposition and persecution. 1Th 1:1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church… in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: The Thessalonian church belonged to God the Father and to the Lord Jesus Christ. Their identity and security rested in their relationship with the Father through His Son, whom they confessed as Lord and Christ. 2Co 1:2 Grace and peace to you from God our Father… Grace and peace to you Paul opens with a blessing that joins the church’s need for God’s undeserved favor with the peace that comes through reconciliation with Him. The greeting reflects the unity of Jewish and Gentile believers, who now share the same salvation and standing in Christ. Rom 1:7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints… from God our Father Grace and peace do not arise from human effort or circumstances but from God Himself. Believers belong to Him as His children, gathered together as one family under His care, authority, and provision. Col 1:2 To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae:… and the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is named alongside the Father as the divine source of grace and peace. As Lord (Kyrios), He possesses divine authority; as Jesus, whose name means “Yahweh saves,” He is the Savior who came in human flesh; and as Christ (Christos), meaning “Anointed One,” He is the promised Messiah. Paul’s greeting affirms the Father and the Son as distinct persons united in giving salvation and blessing to the church. 1Ti 1:2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy… We are obligated to thank God for you all the time, brothers, Paul regarded thanksgiving for the Thessalonian church as a proper duty before God. Though separated from them and aware of their hardships, he continued to give thanks for their perseverance. By calling them brothers, he recognizes their shared standing as members of God’s family through faith in Christ. Rom 1:8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you,… as is fitting, Their spiritual condition made such gratitude appropriate. God deserved the praise because He was at work among them, strengthening a church that had faced opposition from its beginning. Psa 33:1 Rejoice in the LORD, O righteous ones; it is fitting… because your faith is growing more and more, The believers had not abandoned their confidence in Christ under persecution. Their trust in God was becoming stronger and more established, showing genuine spiritual growth rather than a temporary response to the gospel. 2Co 10:15 Neither do we boast beyond our limits… and your love for one another is increasing. Their growing faith was evident in their treatment of one another. The church’s love was expanding despite pressure from outside forces, demonstrating the unity and mutual care produced by obedience to Christ. 1Th 4:9-10 Now about brotherly love, you do not need… That is why we boast among God’s churches Paul, Silas, and Timothy gladly reported the Thessalonians’ steadfast witness to other congregations. Their confidence was not in human achievement but in God’s sustaining work among believers under pressure. 2Co 8:24 In full view of the churches, then, show these men… about your perseverance and faith The Thessalonians continued to trust Christ and remain faithful despite circumstances that could have caused fear or compromise. Their perseverance (Greek: hypomonē, steadfast endurance) showed that their faith was active and firmly rooted. 1Th 1:3 continually recalling before our God and Father… in the face of all the persecution and affliction Opposition had followed the church from its beginning in Thessalonica, where hostile opponents stirred public unrest against the missionaries and the new believers. The congregation faced continuing hostility and hardship because of its allegiance to Christ. Mat 5:10-12 Blessed are those who are persecuted,… you are enduring. Their suffering had not ended, yet they remained faithful. Their continued endurance testified to God’s strength at work in them and anticipated His righteous judgment of those who opposed His people. 2Co 4:8-9 We are hard pressed on all sides, but not crushed;…
Christ’s ComingThe Thessalonian believers’ perseverance under persecution demonstrated the reality of their faith and God’s just purpose in their trials. Their suffering was not meaningless or a sign of God’s abandonment. It showed that God was at work in them and would judge rightly between those who endured in faith and those who opposed His people. Rom 2:5-6 But because of your hard and unrepentant heart,… And so you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, Their endurance did not earn salvation, but it revealed lives being shaped for the kingdom they would inherit. God’s kingdom is both His present rule over His people and the future reign that will be fully revealed when Christ returns. Those who remain faithful amid opposition show that their hope is fixed on that coming kingdom. 1Th 2:12 encouraging you, comforting you, and urging you…… for which you are suffering. The believers in Thessalonica suffered because their allegiance to Christ placed them at odds with hostile neighbors and authorities. Such opposition was common in the early church, where the gospel challenged idolatry, false worship, and loyalty to earthly powers. Their sufferings identified them with Christ and testified to the cost of following Him. Php 1:29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ… After all, Paul continues his encouragement to believers enduring persecution, drawing a conclusion from their steadfast faith and suffering. Deu 32:4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just.… it is only right for God to repay God’s judgment is morally right and certain. He will judge evil, defend His people, and repay every person according to his deeds. Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time… with affliction Those who cause suffering to believers will face God’s righteous judgment. Their actions are not overlooked or excused. Rom 2:9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being… those who afflict you, The Thessalonian Christians faced hostility from opponents of the gospel, including those who resisted the message Paul had preached in their city. God saw their persecution and promised that their enemies would not escape His justice. Isa 49:26 I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh;… and to grant relief to you who are oppressed and to us as well. The Thessalonian believers endured hostility from both Jewish and Gentile opponents, as Acts 17:5–9 records. Paul and his companions likewise suffered for proclaiming Christ. God’s promised relief includes His sustaining comfort in present trials and the final deliverance of His people when Christ judges their persecutors and establishes lasting peace. Mat 11:28 Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened,… This will take place when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven The relief and judgment will be completed at the visible return of Jesus Christ. He will come from heaven in glory and authority, fulfilling God’s purpose to vindicate His people, judge evil, and bring His kingdom to its appointed fullness. 1Th 4:16-17 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven… with His mighty angels Christ will return attended by the powerful hosts of heaven. These angels carry out God’s commands, gather His people, and participate in the execution of His righteous judgment. Their presence displays the majesty and irresistible authority of the returning King. Mat 25:31 When the Son of Man comes in His glory,… in blazing fire, Christ’s return will openly reveal God’s holy power and righteous judgment. Fire portrays the purity of God’s presence and the destruction of all that stands opposed to Him. Isa 66:15-16 For behold, the LORD will come with fire—… inflicting vengeance God’s vengeance is the just punishment of evil, not sinful retaliation. He will judge rebellion, unbelief, and every wrong that has not been forgiven through Christ. Nam 1:2 The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD is avenging… on those who do not know God This includes those who remain estranged from God and refuse the truth He has made known. Eternal life belongs to those who know Him through His Son. 1Th 4:5 not in lustful passion like the Gentiles… and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. The gospel demands a response of repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. To reject His lordship and salvation is to remain under judgment when He returns. 1Pe 4:17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the family of God;… They will suffer the penalty of eternal destruction, God’s judgment is the just consequence of persistent rebellion against Him. Eternal destruction describes irreversible ruin under divine judgment, not the end of existence. Those judged lose forever the life, peace, and purpose found only in God. Mat 25:46 And they will go away into eternal punishment,… separated from the presence of the Lord Sin brought separation from God from humanity’s earliest history, when Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden. Final judgment confirms that separation permanently. Excluded from God’s presence, the lost are cut off from every blessing that flows from His holiness and goodness. Isa 59:2 But your iniquities have built barriers… and the glory of His might, God’s glory is His revealed majesty and power, displayed in creation, redemption, and judgment. The glory of His might is His manifest power and majesty. Those who reject the Lord will not share in the glory prepared for His people but will remain outside the splendor of His victorious reign. Col 1:11 being strengthened with all power… on the day He comes Christ’s return will occur at the time appointed by God, bringing history to its intended completion. His coming will be public, glorious, and decisive, involving judgment for the unbelieving world and deliverance for those who belong to Him. 2Th 2:1 Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ… to be glorified in His saints Believers will share in the glory of Christ through their final transformation into His likeness. Their completed salvation will display the power of His grace and honor Him before all creation. Jhn 17:10 All I have is Yours, and all You have is Mine;… and regarded with wonder by all who have believed, Those who trusted Christ without yet seeing Him in glory will behold Him as He truly is. Their faith will give way to awe as God’s promises are fully realized. 1Pe 1:8 Though you have not seen Him, you love Him;… including you who have believed our testimony. Paul assures the Thessalonian church that they will be among those who marvel at Christ’s appearing because they received the gospel proclaimed by Paul and his companions. Their faith showed that God had truly called them into His people. 1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us… To this end, we always pray for you, Paul joins Silas and Timothy in continual intercession for the Thessalonian church. Though the believers faced hostility and pressure, the missionaries remained concerned for their steadfastness, spiritual maturity, and faithful witness. 1Th 3:10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you… that our God will count you worthy of His calling, God’s calling brings believers into salvation and sets them apart for lives that honor Him. Worthiness does not mean earning God’s favor, but living in a manner consistent with the grace already received through Christ. 1Th 2:12 encouraging you, comforting you, and urging you…… and that He will powerfully fulfill your every good desire and work of faith, God supplies the power needed to bring righteous intentions and faithful service to completion. The Thessalonians’ endurance, obedience, and good works would demonstrate that their faith was active and that God was at work among them. 1Th 1:3 continually recalling before our God and Father… so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, Believers honor the Lord Jesus when their faith, perseverance, and conduct display His power and authority. Amid opposition and suffering, the Thessalonian church’s endurance bore witness that Christ was truly at work among them. Act 19:17 This became known to all the Jews and Greeks… and you in Him, Those united to Christ share in the honor He receives, not by gaining earthly status, but by being transformed to reflect His character and belonging to Him. 2Th 2:14 He called you through our gospel, so that you may share in… according to the grace of our God and of the Lord Jesus Christ. Such transformation and glory come entirely through God’s undeserved favor. The shared mention of God and the Lord Jesus Christ affirms Christ’s divine authority and the secure source of the believers’ hope. 2Th 2:16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father,… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
