Berean Study Bible The First Seal: The White HorseJesus Christ alone is worthy to open the sealed scroll, directing the judgments that will unfold during the tribulation. The first seal begins the sequence of events decreed by God, and the seven seals together reveal the complete scope of His judgment upon the earth. Rev 5:1-7 Then I saw a scroll in the right hand of the One… and I heard one of the four living creatures One of the living creatures surrounding God’s throne announces the next event. These exalted heavenly beings serve before God and participate in carrying out His commands. Rev 4:6-8 And before the throne was something like a sea of glass,… say in a voice like thunder, The commanding voice reflects the authority and majesty of the heavenly throne as the seal judgments begin. Jhn 12:28-29 “Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven:…… “Come!” The summons calls forth the first horseman, initiating the events released by the opening of the first seal. Rev 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let the one who hears…… So I looked and saw a white horse, The white horse presents a deceptive appearance of victory and righteousness. Its rider is not Christ but a counterfeit conqueror who emerges at the beginning of the tribulation, offering promises of peace while preparing the world for conflict. Rev 19:11 Then I saw heaven standing open, and there before me… and its rider held a bow. The bow identifies him as a military and political conqueror. No arrows are mentioned, suggesting that his early victories may come through intimidation, diplomacy, alliances, or deception rather than open warfare. Gen 49:24 Yet he steadied his bow, and his strong arms were tempered… And he was given a crown, The crown marks authority and victory granted within God’s sovereign permission. The rider receives power to rule for a limited time, even as his rise serves the unfolding judgment upon the world. 2Ti 4:8 From now on there is laid up for me the crown…… and he rode out to overcome and conquer. His advance begins a campaign of domination that leads into the disasters represented by the remaining seals. What begins with an apparent peaceful conquest soon gives way to war, famine, death, and worldwide suffering. Rev 17:14 because He is Lord of lords and King of kings…
The Second Seal: WarJesus Christ, the sacrificial Lamb, alone possesses the authority to open the scroll and reveal God’s ordained judgments. The second seal advances the sequence of events leading toward the fulfillment of God’s purposes in history. Rev 5:5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! Behold… I heard the second living creature say, One of the four living creatures surrounding God’s throne summons the next rider. These heavenly beings serve before God, worship Him, and participate in the announcement of His judgments. Rev 4:7 The first living creature was like a lion,… “Come!” The command calls forth the rider associated with the second seal, setting in motion the judgment revealed in the verses that follow. The events occur under Christ’s sovereign authority and according to God’s established plan. Rev 22:17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” Let the one who hears…… Then another horse went forth. At the opening of the second seal, a new rider appears in the ordered sequence of judgments that will unfold upon the earth. Rev 19:11 Then I saw heaven standing open, and there before me… It was bright red, The horse’s color depicts bloodshed, violence, and war on a vast scale. 2Ki 3:22 When they got up early in the morning, the sun was shining… and its rider was granted permission to take away peace from the earth The rider acts only under divine permission, yet his mission results in the removal of international and social stability. Jer 16:5 Indeed, this is what the LORD says: “Do not enter a house… and to make men slay one another. Warfare, civil conflict, and human violence will spread as people turn against one another. Jdg 7:22 And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded,… And he was given a great sword. The sword represents the authority and power to bring widespread death through conflict. Ezk 21:3-5 This is what the LORD says: ‘I am against you,…
The Third Seal: FamineJesus Christ continues to unveil the judgments contained in the scroll. The third seal marks another stage in the events God has appointed before final judgment. Rev 5:1-7 Then I saw a scroll in the right hand of the One… I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” One of the heavenly beings before God’s throne summons the next rider, showing that these judgments proceed under divine authority. Rev 4:6-8 And before the throne was something like a sea of glass,… Then I looked and saw a black horse, The black horse brings famine, deprivation, and national distress. Its appearance follows the devastation of war and points to the scarcity that often results when conflict disrupts fields, trade, and daily life. Zec 6:2-6 The first chariot had red horses, the second black horses,… and its rider held in his hand a pair of scales. The scales indicate that food will be carefully weighed and rationed because it has become scarce and costly. The rider represents a time when ordinary necessities are difficult to obtain, exposing the severe economic suffering that accompanies the coming judgments. Ezk 4:16-17 Then He told me, “Son of man, I am going to cut off… And I heard what sounded like a voice from among the four living creatures, The command comes from the heavenly throne room, where the four living creatures attend God’s throne and carry out His purposes. Their presence shows that the judgment released with the third seal proceeds under divine authority and within God’s appointed limits. Rev 4:6 And before the throne was something like a sea of glass,… saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius, A denarius was commonly a day’s wage, yet it would buy only enough wheat for one person or cheaper barley for a small household. The prices portray famine and economic collapse, as ordinary labor can barely secure daily food. 2Ki 7:1 Then Elisha said, “Hear the word of the LORD!… and do not harm the oil and wine.” The scarcity is restrained rather than total. Oil and wine remain protected, showing that God sets boundaries on the devastation even as famine brings hardship and exposes inequality among those affected. Hag 1:11 I have summoned a drought on the fields and on the mountains…
The Fourth Seal: DeathJesus Christ continues to open the judgments decreed by God. The fourth seal follows the release of conquest, war, and famine, bringing a further judgment that affects the earth on a broad scale. Rev 5:1-7 Then I saw a scroll in the right hand of the One… I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, One of the living creatures before God’s throne summons the next rider. Their participation shows that these events proceed under heaven’s authority and according to God’s appointed order. Rev 4:6-8 And before the throne was something like a sea of glass,… “Come!” The command calls forth the rider revealed in the next scene. The fourth horseman brings death through warfare, famine, disease, and wild beasts, demonstrating the severe consequences of human rebellion during this period of judgment. Zec 6:1-8 And again I lifted up my eyes and saw four chariots… Then I looked and saw a pale green horse. The fourth seal reveals a horse marked by the sickly color of death and decay. Its pale or ashen color, from the Greek chloros, can mean greenish or pale. Its appearance signals the widespread devastation that follows the earlier judgments. Zec 1:8 I looked out into the night and saw a man… Its rider’s name was Death, Death rides as a personal agent of judgment, bringing the end of life across the earth. Hos 13:14 I will ransom them from the power of Sheol;… and Hades followed close behind. Hades follows to receive those who die, joining physical death with the realm of the dead. Rev 20:13-14 The sea gave up its dead, and Death and Hades… And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, Their authority is immense but limited. God permits judgment on a fourth of the earth without allowing total destruction. Rev 9:3-5 And out of the smoke, locusts descended on the earth,… to kill by sword, by famine, by plague, and by the beasts of the earth. War, hunger, disease, and deadly animals bring devastation on a scale not seen in ordinary human conflict. These judgments expose the ruin caused by sin and the terror of a world under divine wrath. Ezk 14:21 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘How much worse……
The Fifth Seal: The MartyrsJohn’s vision continues as Christ directs the unfolding of God’s purposes and judgments. The Lamb alone has authority to open the scroll and reveal what lies ahead. Rev 5:1-7 Then I saw a scroll in the right hand of the One… I saw under the altar The heavenly altar recalls the sacrificial altar, where blood was poured out before God. The setting presents the martyrs’ deaths as precious to God and fully remembered in His presence. Rev 8:3-4 Then another angel, who had a golden censer,… the souls of those who had been slain These are believers who were killed because of their faithfulness to Christ. Though their bodies had been put to death, they remained alive and conscious before God, awaiting the resurrection and God’s righteous judgment. Rev 20:4 Then I saw the thrones, and those seated on them… for the word of God Their deaths resulted from their refusal to abandon God’s revealed truth and their allegiance to it. Rev 1:9 I, John, your brother and partner in the tribulation… and for the testimony they had upheld. They had publicly maintained their witness concerning Jesus Christ, even when that witness brought persecution and death. Rev 12:11 They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb… And they cried out in a loud voice, The martyrs beneath the altar speak together with urgent intensity, appealing openly to God for the justice long withheld from those who shed their blood. Psa 142:1-2 A Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A prayer.… “How long, O Lord, holy and true, Their lament recognizes God’s sovereign authority, moral purity, and faithfulness. Though judgment seems delayed, they trust that He will act according to His character. Psa 79:5 How long, O LORD? Will You be angry forever?… until You judge those who dwell upon the earth The inhabitants of the earth represent those who persist in rebellion against God and persecution of His people. Their judgment remains certain, though appointed for God’s time. Psa 82:8 Arise, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations… and avenge our blood?” They ask God to vindicate His servants by judging their murderers. Their request is for divine justice, not personal retaliation, and anticipates the judgments that follow in Revelation. Psa 79:10 Why should the nations ask, “Where is their God?”… Then each of them was given a white robe The white robe marks them as righteous and victorious before God. Though slain on earth, they are received with honor in heaven and stand in the purity granted by Christ. Rev 7:14 “Sir,” I answered, “you know.” So he replied:… and told to rest a little while longer Their suffering and testimony are complete, but God’s judgment has not yet come. They are commanded to wait in peace until His appointed time. 1Pe 5:10 And after you have suffered for a little while,… until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers, God knows those who belong to Him and has determined the course of history. Other faithful servants of Christ will yet face the same hostility and share in the martyrs’ witness. Rom 11:25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery,… were killed, just as they had been killed. More believers will be put to death for their faith before God brings final judgment on those who persecute His people. Their deaths are not forgotten; all will be vindicated when Christ judges the earth. Mat 23:34-35 Because of this, I am sending you prophets and wise men…
The Sixth Seal: TerrorJohn sees Jesus Christ, the slain and risen Lamb, exercising His authority over the judgments written in the scroll. The sixth seal brings events that visibly shake the created order and signal the approaching day of God’s wrath. Rev 5:1-7 Then I saw a scroll in the right hand of the One… and there was a great earthquake, A devastating earthquake marks a direct act of divine judgment, disrupting the stability of the earth and warning that the present world order is under judgment. Rev 16:18 And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings,… and the sun became black like sackcloth of goat hair, The sun’s darkening turns daylight into mourning, reflecting the terror and grief that accompany God’s intervention. Creation itself bears witness to the severity of the judgment. Isa 50:3 I clothe the heavens in black and make sackcloth… and the whole moon turned blood red, The blood-red moon adds to the fearful signs in the heavens, portraying impending death, judgment, and the nearness of the day when God will hold the world accountable. Jol 2:31 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood… and the stars of the sky fell to the earth The sixth seal brings visible cosmic judgment. Stars falling to earth portrays a catastrophic disruption of the heavens, marking God’s direct intervention in human history and the collapse of powers opposed to Him. Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days:… like unripe figs dropping from a tree Unripe figs fall easily when a tree is violently shaken. The image emphasizes the sudden, unavoidable nature of this judgment, leaving no opportunity for the rebellious world to escape its effects. Nam 3:12 All your fortresses are fig trees with the first ripe figs;… shaken by a great wind. The great wind is the force that brings the figs down, portraying the irresistible power of God. The disturbances in heaven and earth announce that the day of His wrath has begun. Mat 11:7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak… The sky receded like a scroll being rolled up, As the sixth seal is opened, the visible heavens are dramatically altered before the eyes of those on earth. The image recalls the prophetic portrayal of the present order collapsing under God’s direct judgment. What has appeared fixed and enduring is shown to be subject to the Creator’s authority as He brings history toward its appointed end. Isa 34:4 All the stars of heaven will be dissolved.… and every mountain and island was moved from its place. The upheaval extends across the whole earth. Mountains and islands, long regarded as immovable features of creation, are displaced in a worldwide convulsion. No region or people remain untouched by the judgment, and the event anticipates the removal of the present world order before God establishes the new heaven and new earth. Isa 13:13 Therefore I will make the heavens tremble,… Then the kings of the earth, Earthly rulers who exercise national and political authority are included in the terror that follows the opening of the sixth seal. Their rank cannot shield them from the judgment of God. Isa 24:21 In that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven… the nobles, Those honored for birth, position, or social standing stand with kings under the same judgment. Human privilege carries no exemption. Job 12:21 He pours out contempt on nobles and disarms the mighty. the commanders, Military leaders, accustomed to directing armies and wielding force, are unable to resist the power of the Lamb or protect themselves through military strength. Jer 51:57 I will make her princes and wise men drunk… the rich, Those who trusted in wealth and possessions discover that riches cannot purchase safety or delay divine judgment. Jas 5:1 Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail… the mighty, Men distinguished by strength, influence, or reputation are brought low. Every source of human power proves powerless before God. 1Sa 2:4 The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble… and every slave and free man The judgment reaches every class of society. Social divisions that shaped the Roman world do not alter anyone’s accountability before God. 1Co 12:13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body… hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. In fear, people of every rank seek concealment in natural shelters, but no refuge on earth can protect them from the wrath revealed in the following verses. Isa 2:19 Men will flee to caves in the rocks and holes in the ground… And they said to the mountains and the rocks, As the sixth seal brings catastrophic upheaval, people from every level of society recognize that God’s judgment has come. Rather than seeking mercy, they look to the created world for concealment. Isa 2:19 Men will flee to caves in the rocks and holes in the ground… “Fall on us and hide us Death appears preferable to standing exposed before the Judge. Their plea reveals terror, guilt, and the certainty that no earthly refuge can shield them. Luk 23:30 At that time they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”… from the face of the One seated on the throne, God reigns in absolute holiness and authority. Those who have resisted Him now face the reality of His presence and judgment. Exo 33:20 But He added, “You cannot see My face, for no one can see… and from the wrath of the Lamb. Jesus, the Lamb who gave Himself for sinners, also executes righteous judgment. His wrath falls upon those who have rejected His salvation and remain in rebellion against Him. Psa 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry and you perish… For the great day of Their wrath has come, The sixth seal brings the world to recognize that the terrifying disturbances accompanying Christ’s appearing are acts of divine judgment. The Day of the Lord, long anticipated by the prophets, has arrived in its judicial force. God the Father and the Lamb act in perfect unity against human rebellion, exposing the certainty and severity of judgment. Zep 1:14-18 The great Day of the LORD is near—near and coming quickly.… and who is able to withstand it?” No earthly ruler, army, wealth, or human power can endure the judgment of God and the Lamb. The question anticipates the answer given in the following chapter: only those preserved by God can stand before Him. Escape from wrath is found not in human strength but in belonging to Christ. Nam 1:6 Who can withstand His indignation? Who can endure… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
