Berean Study Bible Avoiding ImmoralityA father addresses his child with the affectionate authority of one responsible for shaping his character. Proverbs presents wisdom as instruction for life under God’s rule, involving moral judgment, self-control, and faithfulness. The son must give deliberate attention because the choices ahead carry lasting consequences. Pro 2:2 if you incline your ear to wisdom and direct your heart… incline your ear to my insight, He is called to listen carefully and receive guidance before acting. Insight enables him to recognize deception, resist temptation, and choose what is right. Such teachability reflects the humble posture required to live wisely before the Lord. Pro 4:20 My son, pay attention to my words; incline your ear… that you may maintain discretion Wisdom guards a man from moral carelessness and helps him recognize the consequences of his choices. Solomon presents discretion as a necessary protection against the seductive words and destructive path of adultery. Pro 2:11 Discretion will watch over you,… and your lips may preserve knowledge. Sound judgment should shape a person’s speech as well as his conduct. By holding fast to God’s instruction, he is able to speak truth, resist deception, and avoid giving approval to sin. Mal 2:7 For the lips of a priest should preserve knowledge… Though the lips of the forbidden woman drip honey Her appeal is portrayed as sweet and desirable, like honey, a valued source of pleasure in the ancient world. The forbidden woman is an adulteress who invites a man to violate God’s design for marriage. Her outward attractiveness conceals the destructive end of sexual sin. Pro 7:21 With her great persuasion she entices him;… and her speech is smoother than oil, Her words are flattering, gentle, and persuasive, hiding her true intent. Oil was associated with richness and blessing, yet her smooth speech offers a counterfeit pleasure that leads away from wisdom, faithfulness, and life. Psa 55:21 His speech is smooth as butter, but war is in his heart.… in the end she is bitter as wormwood, Her seductive appeal gives way to sorrow, ruin, and judgment. Wormwood’s extreme bitterness pictured the painful outcome of sin, exposing the false sweetness of immoral desire. Jer 9:15 Therefore this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel,… sharp as a double-edged sword. Her path wounds deeply and brings destruction to those who follow it. Like a weapon that cuts on either side, sexual sin damages the conscience, relationships, and life before God. Heb 4:12 For the word of God is living and active.… Her feet go down to death; The adulterous woman’s path leads away from God’s design for marriage and toward destruction. Her course promises pleasure but ends in loss, judgment, and separation from the life God gives. Pro 2:18 For her house sinks down to death, and her tracks… her steps lead straight to Sheol. Her actions move steadily toward the realm of the dead. The warning presents sexual sin as a path with a real end: ruin in this life and accountability before God. Pro 7:27 Her house is the road to Sheol, descending… She does not consider the path of life; The adulterous woman gives no thought to the path of life, a way aligned with God’s commands that leads to spiritual fulfillment and eternal life. Her words and conduct are directed by immediate desire rather than God’s commands, drawing others away from faithful obedience. Pro 2:19 None who go to her return or negotiate the paths of life. she does not know that her ways are unstable. Her course is crooked and aimless, leading neither her nor those who follow her to safety. Though sin may appear attractive at first, it rests on no lasting foundation and ends in ruin. Pro 4:19 But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom;… So now, my sons, A fatherly teacher calls those under his care to receive instruction as members of a covenant community. The address reflects both affection and authority, urging the next generation to learn from wisdom before suffering the consequences of folly. Pro 4:1 Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction;… listen to me, They are to give careful attention and respond obediently to the instruction that follows. Wisdom requires more than hearing; it directs conduct. Pro 7:24 Now, my sons, listen to me, and attend to the words… and do not turn aside The warning concerns a deliberate departure from the course of righteousness, particularly the temptation to disregard God’s moral boundaries. Such a departure leads away from life and stability. Deu 5:32 So be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you;… from the words of my mouth. The teacher’s counsel summarizes wisdom shaped by the fear of the Lord, providing a trustworthy guide for resisting sin and preserving honor. Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me… Keep your path far from her; Wisdom requires deliberate separation from the adulterous woman and the sin she represents. A person’s path is shaped by repeated choices, and even small steps toward temptation can lead to moral ruin. Pro 4:14-15 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked… do not go near the door of her house, Her doorway marks the boundary where temptation becomes action. The warning forbids not only adultery itself but also the deliberate pursuit of circumstances that invite it. Maintaining distance protects honor, faithfulness, and the integrity of the home. Pro 7:25-27 Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways;… lest you concede your vigor to others, Sexual sin drains the strength, honor, and resources meant for one’s own household and God-given responsibilities. What is given to illicit relationships cannot be recovered without painful loss. Pro 31:3 Do not spend your strength on women or your vigor… and your years to one who is cruel; The immoral woman and the consequences of sin become a harsh master, consuming years through shame, conflict, loss, and regret. Solomon warns that unfaithfulness can place a man under bondage rather than preserving the freedom and blessing of a righteous life. Isa 47:6 I was angry with My people; I profaned My heritage,… lest strangers feast on your wealth, Sexual sin can bring financial ruin, leaving a man’s possessions vulnerable to strangers, those outside his family or community. In Israel’s agrarian society, wealth included land, crops, livestock, and household goods intended to sustain one’s family. Foolish choices could destroy that security and transfer its benefits to outsiders. Ecc 6:2 God gives a man riches, wealth, and honor,… and your labors enrich the house of a foreigner. What a man has gained through years of work may be lost to those outside his household, including creditors, rivals, or foreign powers. The warning portrays the bitter outcome of abandoning wisdom: labor that should have provided stability and inheritance instead benefits others. Ecc 2:21-22 When there is a man who has labored with wisdom,… At the end of your life The warning looks ahead to the final outcome of sexual sin and rejection of wisdom. What may appear pleasurable in youth brings lasting loss, shame, and regret when the opportunity to change has passed. Pro 16:25 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end… you will groan Deep sorrow rises from recognizing that foolish choices have brought ruin. The groaning reflects anguish over a life diminished by sin and its consequences. Ezk 24:23 Your turbans will remain on your heads.… when your flesh and your body are spent, Physical strength and health are exhausted, exposing the emptiness of pleasures pursued apart from God’s design. The body bears the cost of a life given over to destructive desires. Lam 3:4 He has worn away my flesh and skin; He has shattered… and you will say, “How I hated discipline, God’s correction had been offered through parents, teachers, and His revealed instruction, but it was treated as an enemy rather than a safeguard. Psa 50:17 For you hate My instruction and cast My words behind you. and my heart despised reproof! The inward rejection of correction revealed a stubborn refusal to turn from evil. What was meant to restore and protect was despised until the cost of that rebellion became clear. Pro 1:30 They accepted none of my counsel; they despised… I did not listen to the voice of my teachers God appointed parents, elders, and instructors to impart wisdom rooted in His Law. Rejecting their correction left the sinner exposed to the ruin that follows immoral choices. Pro 4:1-2 Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction;… or incline my ear to my mentors. Wisdom required more than hearing words; it demanded humble attention and obedience. By refusing the guidance of those entrusted with his instruction, he chose a path that led to shame and destruction. Pro 22:17-18 Incline your ear and hear the words of the wise—… I am on the brink of utter ruin The man who rejected instruction and pursued adultery now sees the destruction his sin has brought. His choices have endangered his home, reputation, and future, leaving him near complete collapse. Pro 6:32-33 He who commits adultery lacks judgment;… in the midst of the whole assembly.” His disgrace is not hidden. In Israel, serious wrongdoing could become known before the community, where reputation, justice, and covenant faithfulness mattered greatly. Sin that was pursued in secret has resulted in public shame. 1Ti 5:20 But those who persist in sin should be rebuked… Drink water from your own cistern, In a land where water was precious, a cistern represented a household’s guarded and dependable supply. The image calls a husband to remain faithful to his wife, finding satisfaction within the marriage covenant rather than seeking intimacy elsewhere. Marriage is to be marked by exclusive devotion and careful nurture. Mal 2:14-15 Yet you ask, “Why?” It is because the LORD has been a witness… and running water from your own well. A well supplied fresh water for daily life, portraying the joy, vitality, and purity of a faithful marital union. Husband and wife are to receive one another as God’s provision, preserving the trust and intimacy established in marriage. Sng 4:15 You are a garden spring, a well of fresh water… Why should your springs flow in the streets, Marital intimacy is pictured as a guarded source of life and blessing. In a land where water was valuable, allowing a private spring to run freely into the streets would be wasteful and unwise. So it is with sexual affection: what belongs within the covenant of marriage must not be shared outside it. Sng 4:12 My sister, my bride, you are a garden locked up,… your streams of water in the public squares? Public squares were places of business and gathering, not places for private matters. Adultery exposes what God intended to be exclusive, bringing dishonor, broken trust, and lasting consequences. Husband and wife are to preserve the privacy and faithfulness of their union. Pro 1:20-21 Wisdom calls out in the street, she lifts her voice… Let them be yours alone, Marriage joins a husband and wife in an exclusive covenant, reserving sexual intimacy for one another. Such faithfulness protects the unity, trust, and holiness of the home. Sng 6:3 I belong to my beloved and he belongs to me;… never to be shared with strangers. Sexual unfaithfulness gives what belongs within marriage to those outside it, bringing betrayal, disorder, and lasting harm. The command guards the marriage bond from compromise and division. Sng 4:12 My sister, my bride, you are a garden locked up,… May your fountain be blessed, The fountain pictures the fruitfulness of a man’s household, including the children and family life that flow from marriage. In a land where reliable water meant life, provision, and prosperity, a blessed fountain represents God’s favor upon a faithful home and its future generations. Psa 128:3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine, flourishing… and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth: A husband is to cherish the woman he married in his youth rather than seek pleasure outside the marriage covenant. Marriage is presented as a lifelong union marked by faithfulness, contentment, and shared joy. Mal 2:14 Yet you ask, “Why?” It is because the LORD has been a witness… A loving doe, a graceful fawn— The doe and fawn portray a wife’s beauty, tenderness, and loveliness. Marriage is presented as a covenant in which a husband delights in his wife and treasures her companionship. Sng 2:9 My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag.… may her breasts satisfy you always; Sexual intimacy belongs within marriage as God’s good gift, joining husband and wife in mutual affection and faithfulness. A husband is to find contentment in his own wife rather than seeking unlawful pleasure elsewhere. Sng 4:5 Your breasts are like two fawns, twins of a gazelle… may you be captivated by her love forever. Marital love is meant to remain strong throughout life. The husband’s continuing delight in his wife guards the marriage bond and reflects the steadfast devotion required by their covenant. Sng 4:9-10 You have captured my heart, my sister, my bride;… Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress, A father warns his son against the seductive pull of sexual sin. Adultery violates the marriage covenant and brings ruin to those who yield to it, despite its temporary appeal. Pro 6:25 Do not lust in your heart for her beauty… or embrace the bosom of a stranger? Intimacy belongs within marriage, not with someone outside that covenant. Such unfaithfulness damages homes, invites judgment, and turns the heart from the wisdom and faithfulness God requires. Pro 6:29 So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife;… For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, God fully sees the conduct, motives, and course of every person. No action is concealed from Him, whether public or private. This knowledge establishes human accountability before the holy God, who knows the true character behind outward deeds. Pro 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place… and the LORD examines all his paths. God carefully weighs the direction and outcome of each life. The paths a person chooses reveal whether he walks in wisdom or rebellion. His examination includes judgment, but it also reflects His righteous rule over those He guides away from sin and toward obedience. Jer 17:10 I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind… The iniquities of a wicked man entrap him; Sin carries its own consequences. The wicked man’s rebellion against God becomes the means of his ruin, drawing him into guilt, destructive choices, and judgment. What may begin as a deliberate act becomes a pattern that closes around him like a hunter’s trap. Pro 29:6 An evil man is caught by his own sin, but a righteous one… the cords of his sin entangle him. Sin does not leave a man free to direct his own course. Like ropes binding a prisoner, repeated evil desires and actions tighten their hold, limiting his ability to escape the path he has chosen. Deliverance from such bondage requires God’s saving work and a turn from sin. Lam 1:14 My transgressions are bound into a yoke,… He dies for lack of discipline, Rejecting correction leaves a person exposed to the consequences of sin. Wisdom, instruction, and self-control restrain destructive desires; without them, a man follows a course that ends in ruin and death. Pro 23:13-14 Do not withhold discipline from a child;… led astray by his own great folly. His downfall is not forced upon him but grows from his own persistent refusal of wisdom. Great folly turns from God’s order, follows sinful desires, and wanders from the path of life. Pro 19:3 A man’s own folly subverts his way, yet his heart… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible.
