David and Mephibosheth

Then David asked,

Secure in his rule over Israel, David turned his attention to a promise made years earlier. Rather than treating Saul’s family as a political threat, he sought to honor his covenant with Jonathan.

2Sa 2:1 Some time later, David inquired of the LORD, …
2Sa 5:19 So David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up…

“Is there anyone left from the house of Saul

Saul’s dynasty had collapsed, and most of his sons had died in the conflicts surrounding David’s rise to the throne. A new king commonly removed surviving members of a former royal house, but David chose a different course.

2Sa 4:4 And Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame…
2Sa 21:7 Now the king spared Mephibosheth son of Jonathan…

to whom I can show kindness

David intended to extend practical mercy and royal favor to any surviving descendant of Saul. His actions displayed faithfulness rather than revenge toward the family that had once opposed him.

1Sa 20:14-15 And as long as I live, treat me with the LORD’s……
2Sa 2:5-6 So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead…
1Ki 2:7 But show loving devotion to the sons of Barzillai…

for the sake of Jonathan?”

David’s concern was rooted in his covenant friendship with Jonathan. Though Jonathan was dead, David remained bound by the pledge he had made and would soon show favor to Jonathan’s son, Mephibosheth.

1Sa 20:42 And Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace.…
1Sa 23:16-18 And Saul’s son Jonathan came to David in Horesh…

And there was a servant of the house of Saul named Ziba.

Ziba had served Saul’s royal household and likely oversaw portions of the family’s estate. With Saul’s dynasty displaced by David, those connected to the former king lived under uncertain circumstances. His knowledge of Saul’s household made him important when David sought information about surviving descendants.

2Sa 19:17 along with a thousand men of Benjamin, as well as…
2Sa 16:1 When David had gone a little beyond the summit,…
2Sa 16:3 “Where is your master’s grandson?” asked the king.…

They summoned him to David,

David acted on his commitment to Jonathan by seeking anyone remaining from Saul’s family. As king, he had authority to call Ziba before him and intended to deal faithfully with Saul’s household rather than treat them as political threats.

2Sa 14:33 So Joab went and told the king, and David summoned Absalom…
1Ki 1:28 Then King David said, “Call in Bathsheba for me.”…
1Sa 16:12 So Jesse sent for his youngest son and brought him in.…

and the king inquired, “Are you Ziba?”

David personally confirmed the identity of the man who could speak knowledgeably about Saul’s estate and family.

1Sa 17:58 “Whose son are you, young man?” asked Saul.…
1Sa 17:55 As Saul had watched David going out to confront…

“I am your servant,” he replied.

Ziba acknowledged David as king and presented himself as subject to his authority.

2Sa 15:21 But Ittai answered the king, “As surely as the LORD lives…
1Sa 17:32 And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail…
2Sa 7:20 What more can David say to You? For You know Your servant…

So the king asked,

David, firmly established as Israel’s ruler, sought to honor the covenant loyalty he had pledged to Jonathan.

2Sa 21:1-2 During the reign of David there was a famine…
2Sa 2:5-6 So David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead…
1Sa 24:21-22 So now, swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off…

“Is there anyone left of the house of Saul

Saul’s family had lost its royal power after his death, and surviving members could have been viewed as potential rivals to David’s throne.

1Sa 20:14-17 And as long as I live, treat me with the LORD’s……
2Sa 3:1 Now the war between the house of Saul…
2Sa 21:7 Now the king spared Mephibosheth son of Jonathan…

to whom I can show the kindness of God?”

David desired to extend faithful mercy rather than act as kings often did by removing a former dynasty.

2Sa 7:15-16 But My loving devotion will never be removed from him…
Rom 2:4 Or do you disregard the riches of His kindness…
Tit 3:4-5 But when the kindness of God our Savior…

Ziba answered,

Ziba had served Saul’s household and knew of its remaining descendants.

2Sa 16:1-4 When David had gone a little beyond the summit,…
2Sa 19:24-30 Then Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, went down…

“There is still Jonathan’s son,

Jonathan’s son was the living reminder of the covenant friendship between David and Jonathan.

2Sa 4:4 And Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame…
1Ch 8:34-35 The son of Jonathan: Merib-baal, and Merib-baal…
1Ch 9:39-40 Ner was the father of Kish, Kish was the father of Saul,…

who is lame in both feet.”

Mephibosheth had been injured as a child and lived with a condition that left him dependent and vulnerable. David’s response would show that his kindness was not based on status, strength, or usefulness.

2Sa 19:26 “My lord the king,” he replied, “because I am lame,…
Isa 35:6 Then the lame will leap like a deer, and the mute tongue…
Act 3:2-8 And a man who was lame from birth was being carried…

“Where is he?” replied the king.

David’s question reveals his intention to honor the covenant he had made with Jonathan by seeking out Jonathan’s surviving son. Rather than treating Saul’s descendants as rivals, David acts to preserve and restore a member of Saul’s house.

2Sa 16:3 “Where is your master’s grandson?” asked the king.…
2Sa 19:24-25 Then Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, went down…
2Sa 21:7-8 Now the king spared Mephibosheth son of Jonathan…

And Ziba said,

Ziba, formerly a servant in Saul’s household, knew where Mephibosheth had been living and could direct David to him.

2Sa 16:1-2 When David had gone a little beyond the summit,…
2Sa 16:4 So the king said to Ziba, “All that belongs to Mephibosheth…
2Sa 19:26-29 “My lord the king,” he replied, “because I am lame,…

“Indeed, he is in Lo-debar

Mephibosheth had been living away from Jerusalem, in Lo-debar (“no pasture” or “no word”), a remote town east of the Jordan, far removed from the royal position into which he had been born.

2Sa 4:4 And Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame…
1Ch 8:34-40 The son of Jonathan: Merib-baal, and Merib-baal…
1Sa 20:14-17 And as long as I live, treat me with the LORD’s……

at the house of Machir son of Ammiel.”

Machir had given Mephibosheth refuge after the collapse of Saul’s dynasty. His later support for David shows that he remained a man of influence and loyalty during David’s reign.

2Sa 17:27-29 When David came to Mahanaim, he was met by Shobi…
2Sa 19:30 And Mephibosheth said to the king, “Instead,…
1Ch 9:39-40 Ner was the father of Kish, Kish was the father of Saul,…

So King David had him brought

David acted on his covenant promise to Jonathan by seeking out and showing kindness to Jonathan’s surviving son. His royal authority was used to restore rather than to remove a member of Saul’s house, displaying faithful mercy toward one who could make no claim on the throne.

2Sa 14:21 Then the king said to Joab, “I hereby grant this request.…
1Ki 1:53 So King Solomon summoned Adonijah down from the altar…
1Ki 2:36 Then the king summoned Shimei and said to him,…

from the house of Machir son of Ammiel

Mephibosheth had found protection in the household of Machir, a man able to provide for him in Gilead. His dependence on another household highlights his vulnerable position apart from the royal court.

2Sa 17:27 When David came to Mahanaim, he was met by Shobi…
2Sa 17:28 They brought beds, basins, and earthen vessels…
2Sa 17:29 honey, curds, sheep, and cheese from the herd…

in Lo-debar.

Living in Lo-debar (“no pasture” or “no word”) east of the Jordan placed Mephibosheth far from Jerusalem and the privileges once associated with Saul’s family. David’s summons brought him from obscurity into the king’s presence and prepared the way for his restoration.

2Sa 21:7 Now the king spared Mephibosheth son of Jonathan…
2Sa 4:4 And Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame…
2Sa 19:24 Then Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, went down…

And when Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David,

Mephibosheth was Jonathan’s son and Saul’s grandson, placing him within the former royal house. In the ancient world, a new king often viewed surviving members of a previous dynasty as threats. David instead received him because of his covenant loyalty to Jonathan.

2Sa 4:4 And Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame…
2Sa 21:7 Now the king spared Mephibosheth son of Jonathan…
1Sa 20:14-17 And as long as I live, treat me with the LORD’s……

he fell facedown in reverence.

Aware of his vulnerable position before Israel’s king, Mephibosheth approached David with humility and submission.

1Sa 25:23-24 When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off the donkey,…
1Sa 24:8 After that, David got up, went out of the cave,…
Est 8:3 And once again, Esther addressed the king.…

Then David said, “Mephibosheth!”

David addressed him personally, showing that he was not forgotten or treated merely as a remnant of Saul’s house.

1Sa 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before,…
Exo 33:17 So the LORD said to Moses, “I will do this very thing…
Isa 43:1 But now, this is what the LORD says—He who created you……

“I am your servant,” he replied.

Mephibosheth responded as one who expected David to determine his future, acknowledging David’s authority and offering himself in loyal service.

2Sa 19:26 “My lord the king,” he replied, “because I am lame,…
1Ki 18:36 At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah…
Gen 24:34 “I am Abraham’s servant,” he replied.

“Do not be afraid,” said David,

Mephibosheth had reason to fear, since he was Saul’s grandson and a potential rival to David’s throne. Instead of treating him as an enemy, David received him in peace.

1Ch 28:20 David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong…
Jos 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?…
Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram…

“for surely I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan.

David honored the covenant and friendship he had shared with Jonathan. His kindness toward Jonathan’s son showed that David remained faithful to his promise even after Jonathan and Saul had died.

1Sa 20:14-17 And as long as I live, treat me with the LORD’s……
1Sa 20:42 And Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace.…
2Sa 1:26 I grieve for you, Jonathan, my brother.…

I will restore to you all the land of your grandfather Saul,

Saul’s former estate was returned to his heir, restoring Mephibosheth’s inheritance and providing for his household. David freely gave what Mephibosheth could not have secured for himself.

2Ki 8:3-6 At the end of seven years, when the woman returned…
Rut 4:4-6 I thought I should inform you that you may buy it back……
Lev 25:25-28 If your brother becomes impoverished, his nearest of kin…

and you will always eat at my table.”

Mephibosheth was granted a permanent place in the king’s household. Though crippled and from the fallen house of Saul, he was treated with the honor and provision given to a member of David’s own family.

1Ki 2:7 But show loving devotion to the sons of Barzillai…
2Ki 25:29 So Jehoiachin changed out of his prison clothes,…
2Sa 19:33 The king said to Barzillai, “Cross over with me”…

Mephibosheth bowed down

Mephibosheth responded to David with the humility expected before a king. As Saul’s grandson, he had reason to fear David, yet David had received him with favor.

2Sa 14:4 When the woman from Tekoa went to the king,…
1Sa 24:8 After that, David got up, went out of the cave,…
1Ki 1:16 And Bathsheba bowed down in homage to the king,…

and said, “What is your servant,

He acknowledged David’s authority and placed himself at the king’s mercy.

2Sa 7:18 Then King David went in, sat before the LORD…
Gen 18:3 “My lord,” said Abraham, “if I have found favor”…
Luk 17:10 So you also, when you have done everything commanded of you,…

that you should show regard

David’s kindness arose from his covenant loyalty to Jonathan and included restoring Saul’s property and granting Mephibosheth a place at the royal table.

Rut 2:10 At this, she fell on her face, bowing low to the ground…
Luk 1:48 For He has looked with favor on the humble state…
Psa 8:4 what is man that You are mindful of him?…

for a dead dog like me?”

Mephibosheth described himself as utterly insignificant and unworthy, aware of his weakness and vulnerable position within the former royal house.

1Sa 24:14 Against whom has the king of Israel come out?…
2Sa 16:9 Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king,…
2Ki 8:13 “But how could your servant, a mere dog”…

Then the king summoned Saul’s servant Ziba

David called for Ziba, who had managed Saul’s household and estate. As king, David acted to fulfill his covenant commitment to Jonathan by seeking out Saul’s remaining descendants.

2Sa 16:1-4 When David had gone a little beyond the summit,…
2Sa 19:17-20 along with a thousand men of Benjamin, as well as…

and said to him,

Ziba received a direct royal order concerning the property once belonging to Saul’s family.

2Sa 19:29 The king replied, “Why say any more? I hereby declare…
2Sa 14:21-24 Then the king said to Joab, “I hereby grant this request.…
1Ki 2:36-38 Then the king summoned Shimei and said to him,…

“I have given to your master’s grandson

David identified Mephibosheth as the rightful heir of Saul’s house through Jonathan. Though Saul had opposed David, David preserved Jonathan’s family rather than treating them as rivals.

1Sa 20:14-17 And as long as I live, treat me with the LORD’s……
2Sa 4:4 And Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame…
2Sa 19:24-28 Then Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, went down…

all that belonged to Saul and to all his house.

David restored Saul’s lands and estate to Mephibosheth, providing him security and restoring his family’s place in Israel.

1Sa 15:28 So Samuel said to him, “The LORD has torn the kingdom…
2Sa 3:1 Now the war between the house of Saul…
1Ch 10:13-14 So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD…

You and your sons and servants are to work the ground for him

David assigns Ziba and his household to cultivate Saul’s former estate on Mephibosheth’s behalf. The land had been restored to Mephibosheth as Saul’s heir, and its produce would provide for his household.

Gen 3:23 Therefore the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden…
Pro 12:11 The one who works his land will have plenty of food, but…
Pro 28:19 The one who works his land will have plenty of food,…

and bring in the harvest,

Ziba’s family and servants were responsible not only for planting and tending the fields but also for gathering the crops. Their labor ensured that the estate would remain productive and secure.

Pro 10:5 He who gathers in summer is a wise son, but…
Psa 126:5-6 Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy.…
Rut 2:3 So Ruth departed and went out into the field and gleaned…

so that your master’s grandson may have food to eat.

Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son and Saul’s grandson, would receive the income and provisions from the land. Though disabled from childhood, he was not abandoned or reduced to poverty; David made certain that his needs and household were supplied.

Gen 45:11 And there I will provide for you, because there will be…
1Ki 17:14-16 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says:…
Psa 111:5 He provides food for those who fear Him;…

But Mephibosheth, your master’s grandson, is always to eat at my table.”

David gave Mephibosheth an honored place among the royal household. Eating at the king’s table marked ongoing fellowship, protection, and favor, fulfilling David’s covenant commitment to Jonathan.

2Sa 19:28 For all the house of my grandfather deserves death…
1Ki 2:7 But show loving devotion to the sons of Barzillai…
2Ki 25:29 So Jehoiachin changed out of his prison clothes,…

Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.

Ziba possessed a large enough household to manage the estate David placed under his care. His sons and servants provided the labor needed to work the land and sustain Mephibosheth’s household.

2Sa 19:17 along with a thousand men of Benjamin, as well as…
Gen 24:2 So Abraham instructed the chief servant of his household…
Gen 14:14 And when Abram heard that his relative had been captured…

And Ziba said to the king,

Saul’s former servant accepted David’s authority and was entrusted with managing Mephibosheth’s estate. His service placed him in a position of influence within the household of Jonathan’s disabled son.

2Sa 16:4 So the king said to Ziba, “All that belongs to Mephibosheth…
2Sa 19:26 “My lord the king,” he replied, “because I am lame,…

“Your servant will do all that my lord the king has commanded.”

Ziba pledged obedience to David’s instructions concerning the land, its produce, and Mephibosheth’s care. David’s command established Mephibosheth securely within the royal household.

2Ki 10:5 So the palace administrator, the overseer of the city…
2Sa 15:15 The king’s servants replied, “Whatever our lord the king…
1Ki 2:38 “The sentence is fair,” Shimei replied. “Your servant…”…

So Mephibosheth ate at David’s table

David faithfully honored his covenant with Jonathan by providing for Mephibosheth continually. Though descended from Saul, Mephibosheth was received with favor rather than treated as a threat to David’s throne.

2Sa 19:28 For all the house of my grandfather deserves death…
1Ki 2:7 But show loving devotion to the sons of Barzillai…
2Ki 25:29 So Jehoiachin changed out of his prison clothes,…

like one of the king’s own sons.

Mephibosheth was given a place of lasting honor and provision in David’s family, demonstrating the king’s steadfast kindness toward Jonathan’s house.

2Sa 7:14 I will be his Father, and he will be My son.…
1Ch 17:13 I will be his Father, and he will be My son.…
Psa 2:7 I will proclaim the decree spoken to Me by the LORD:…

And Mephibosheth had a young son named Mica,

The birth of Mica, whose name means “Who is like God?”, preserved the family line of Jonathan and Saul. Though Saul’s dynasty had fallen from the throne, David’s covenant kindness ensured that Jonathan’s descendants remained protected and provided for.

1Ch 8:34 The son of Jonathan: Merib-baal, and Merib-baal…
1Ch 9:40 The son of Jonathan: Merib-baal, who was the father…

and all who dwelt in the house of Ziba were servants of Mephibosheth.

Ziba and his household managed the land David restored to Mephibosheth, producing for his family while Mephibosheth lived at the king’s table. Their service marked the restoration of Mephibosheth’s rightful estate and the security David gave to Jonathan’s family.

2Sa 19:17 along with a thousand men of Benjamin, as well as…
2Sa 16:1-4 When David had gone a little beyond the summit,…

So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem,

Jonathan’s son and Saul’s grandson remained in Jerusalem under David’s protection. As David’s capital, the city was the center of royal authority and worship in Israel. Mephibosheth’s residence there showed that David had preserved Saul’s family line in keeping with his covenant loyalty to Jonathan.

2Sa 19:24-25 Then Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, went down…
2Sa 5:6-7 Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem…
1Ch 11:4-5 Then David and all the Israelites marched to Jerusalem…

because he always ate at the king’s table,

David treated Mephibosheth as a member of the royal household, providing him with continual food, security, and honor. The arrangement restored dignity to a man whose family had lost the throne and whose circumstances had left him dependent on others.

2Sa 19:33-38 The king said to Barzillai, “Cross over with me”…
1Ki 2:7 But show loving devotion to the sons of Barzillai…
2Ki 25:29 So Jehoiachin changed out of his prison clothes,…

and he was lame in both feet.

His disability, caused by an accident in childhood, remained part of his life. David’s favor was not based on Mephibosheth’s strength or usefulness but on the king’s faithfulness to his promise.

2Sa 4:4 And Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame…
2Sa 19:26 “My lord the king,” he replied, “because I am lame,…
Act 3:2 And a man who was lame from birth was being carried…
