1 Early in the morning the chief priests, with the elders and scribes and the whole Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court), immediately consulted together; and they bound Jesus, they took Him away [violently] and handed Him over to Pilate. And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And they bound Jesus and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate. Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
2 Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He replied to him, “It is as you say.” And Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, “You have said so.” “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
3 The chief priests began accusing Him of many things. And the chief priests accused him of many things. The chief priests accused him of many things.
4 Then Pilate again asked Him, “Have You no answer [to give]? See how many charges they are bringing against You!” And Pilate again asked him, “Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.”
5 But Jesus gave no further answer; so Pilate was perplexed. But Jesus made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed. But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.
6 Now at the [Passover] feast Pilate used to set free for them any one prisoner whom they requested. Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested.
7 The man called Barabbas was imprisoned with the insurrectionists (revolutionaries) who had committed murder in the civil rebellion. And among the rebels in prison, who had committed murder in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising.
8 The crowd came up and began asking Pilate to do as he usually did for them. And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

12 Again Pilate answered, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?” “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.
13 They screamed back, “Crucify Him!” And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” “Crucify him!” they shouted.
14 But Pilate asked them, “Why, what has He done that is evil?” But they screamed all the more, “Crucify Him!” And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, set Barabbas free for them; and after having Jesus scourged, he handed Him over [to his soldiers] to be crucified. So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
16 The soldiers led Him away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they called together the entire [Roman] battalion [of 600 soldiers]. And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. 17 They dressed Him up in [a ranking Roman officer’s robe of] purple, and after twisting [together] a crown of thorns, they placed it on Him; And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 20 After they had mocked Him, they took off the purple robe and put His own clothes on Him. And they led Him out [of the city] to crucify Him. 24 And they crucified Him, and divided up His clothes among themselves, casting lots for them to see who should take what. 28 [And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “He was counted with the transgressors.”]
29 Those who were passing by were insulting Him with abusive and insolent language, wagging their heads [as a sign of contempt], and saying, “Ha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in [only] three days, And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” save yourself, and come down from the cross!” come down from the cross and save yourself!”
31 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were ridiculing and mocking Him among themselves and saying, “He saved others [from death]; He cannot save Himself! So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. In the same way the chief priests and the teachers of the law mocked him among themselves. “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself!
32 Let the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe and trust [in Him]!” Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him. Let this Messiah, this king of Israel, come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe.” Those crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
33 When the sixth hour (noon) came, darkness covered the whole land until the ninth hour (3:00 p.m.). And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “ELOI, ELOI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?”—which is translated, “MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?” And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
35 Some of the bystanders heard Him and said, “Look! He is calling for Elijah!” And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.”
36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave Him a drink, saying, “Let us see whether Elijah is coming to take Him down.” And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said.
37 But Jesus uttered a loud cry, and breathed out His last [voluntarily, sovereignly dismissing and releasing His spirit from His body in submission to His Father’s plan]. And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.
38 And the veil [of the Holy of Holies] of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
39 When the centurion, who was standing opposite Him, saw the way He breathed His last [being fully in control], he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!” And when the centurion, who stood there in front of Jesus, saw how he died, he said, “Surely this man was the Son of God!”
40 Now some women also were watching from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the Less and of Joses, and Salome. 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent and respected member of the Council (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court), who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God—and he courageously dared to go in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body.
44 Pilate wondered if He was dead by this time [only six hours after being crucified], and he summoned the centurion and asked him whether He was already dead. And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.
