2	As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, Behold I send my messenger before your face, that he may prepare your way,	As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way,	as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way” —
3	The voice that cries in the wilderness, Make ready the way of the Lord, and straighten his high ways.	the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’”	“a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’”
4	John was in the wilderness, baptizing and preaching the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,	John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.	And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
5	And the whole province of Judaea went out to him, and all the people of Jerusalem; and he baptized them in the river Jordan, when they confessed their sins.	And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6	John wore a dress of camel’s hair, with a girdle of leather fastened around his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey.	Now John was clothed with camel’s hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.	John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
7	And he preached saying, Behold, there is coming after me one who is mightier than myself, even the strings of whose shoes I am not good enough to bend down and untie.	And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.	And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
8	I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.	I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”	I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
9	And it came to pass in those days, Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized in the Jordan by John.	In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.	At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
10	And immediately, as he went up out of the water, he saw the sky was clear open, and the Spirit as a dove came down upon him.	And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.	Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
11	And a voice came from heaven, You are my beloved Son, I am pleased with you.	And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.”	And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
12	And immediately the Spirit drove him out into the wilderness.	The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.	At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness,
13	And he was there in the wilderness forty days, being tried out by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him. Repent and believe the good news!”
16	While he walked along the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother throwing their nets into the sea; for they were fishermen.	Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.	As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
17	And Jesus said to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.	And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”	“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
18	And straightway they left their nets, and went after him.	And immediately they left their nets and followed him.	At once they left their nets and followed him.
19	And when he went a little further, he saw James the son of Zebedee and his brother John; they also were in a boat mending their nets.	And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets.	When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.
20	And he called them; and immediately they left their father Zebedee with the hired men, and went after him.	And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.	Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
21	When they entered into Capernaum, straightway he taught on the sabbaths in their synagogues.	And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching.	They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
22	And they were amazed at his teaching; for he taught them as one with an authority, and not like their scribes.	And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.	The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.
23	And there was in their synagogue a man who had in him an unclean spirit; and he cried out,	And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,	Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out,
24	And said, Jesus of Nazareth, what have we in common? Have you come to destroy us? I know you, who you are, “Holy One of God.”	“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”	“What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”
25	And Jesus rebuked him and said, Be silent, and come out of him.	But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”	“Be quiet!” said Jesus sternly. “Come out of him!”
26	And the unclean spirit threw him down, and cried out in a loud voice, and left him.	And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.	The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
27	And they were all astonished, and kept asking one another saying, What does this mean? and what is this new teaching, that with such a power he commands even unclean spirits and they obey him?	And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”	The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.”
28	And his fame immediately spread throughout the country of Galilee.	And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.	News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
29	Then they went out of the synagogue, and came to the house of Simon and Andrew, together with James and John.	And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.	As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
30	And Simon’s mother-in-law was laid up with fever; and they spoke to him about her.	Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.	Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her.
31	And he went and held her hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered to them.	And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.	So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
32	In the evening towards sunset, they brought to him all who were seriously sick, and the insane.	That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons.	That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.
33	And the whole city was gathered at the door.	And the whole city was gathered together at the door.	The whole town gathered at the door,
34	And he healed many who were seriously sick with divers diseases, and he restored many who were insane; and he did not allow the insane to speak because some of them were his acquaintances.	And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.	and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
35	And in the morning he rose up very early and went away to a lonely place, and there prayed.	And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.	Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
36	And Simon and those who were with him were looking for him.	And Simon and those who were with him searched for him,	Simon and his companions went to look for him,
37	And when they found him, they said to him, Everyone wants you.	and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.”	and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”
38	He said to them, Let us walk to the neighboring towns and cities, so that I may preach there also; because I came for this.	And he said to them, “Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for that is why I came out.”	Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.”
39	And he preached in all their synagogues throughout Galilee, and cast out demons.	And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.	So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
40	And there came to him a leper, who fell down at his feet, and begged him, saying, If you will, you can make me clean.	And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.”	A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”
41	And Jesus had mercy on him, and stretched out his hand and touched him, and said, I am willing; be clean.	Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.”	Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!”
42	And in that hour his leprosy disappeared from him, and he became clean.	And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.	Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.
43	And Jesus rebuked him and put him out,	And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once,	Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning:
44	And said to him, Look here, why are you telling it to the people? but go away, show yourself to the priests, and offer an offering for the sake of your cleansing, according to what Moses commanded, as their testimonial.	and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”	“See that you don’t tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
45	But when he went out, he began to publish it still more, and to spread the word, so that Jesus was no longer able to enter the city openly, but he remained outside in a lonely place; and yet they came to him from every place.	But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.	Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
