1 IN the evening of the sabbath day, when the first day of the week began, there came Mary of Magdala and the other Mary, to see the tomb. Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
2 And behold, a great earthquake took place; for the angel of the Lord came down from heaven, and went up and rolled away the stone from the door, and sat on it. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.
3 His appearance was like lightning, and his garments white as snow. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow.
4 And for fear of him the guards who were watching trembled, and became as if they were dead. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
5 But the angel answered and said to the women, You need not be afraid; for I know that you are seeking Jesus who was crucified. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, just as he had said. Come in, see the place where our Lord was laid. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.
7 And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead; and behold, he will be before you to Galilee; there you will see him; behold, I have told you. See, I have told you.” Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”
8 And they went away hurriedly from the tomb with fear and with great joy, running to tell his disciples. So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.
9 And behold, Jesus met them, and said to them, Peace be to you. And they came up and laid hold of his feet, and worshipped him. And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him.
10 Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid; but go and tell my brethren to go to Galilee, and there they shall see me. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.” Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”
11 When they were going, some of the guards came into the city, and told the high priests everything that had happened. While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.
12 So they gathered with the elders and took counsel; and they gave money, not a small sum, to the guards, And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money,
13 Telling them, Say that his disciples came by night and stole him while we were sleeping. and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ telling them, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.’
14 And if this should be heard by the governor, we will appeal to him, and declare that you are blameless. And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.”
15 So they took the money, and did as they were instructed; and this word went out among the Jews, until this day. So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day. So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.
