1 Τοῦτο δὲ γίνωσκε ὅτι ἐν ἐσχάταις ἡμέραις ἐνστήσονται καιροὶ χαλεποί But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.
2 ἔσονται γὰρ οἱ ἄνθρωποι φίλαυτοι φιλάργυροι ἀλαζόνες ὑπερήφανοι βλάσφημοι γονεῦσιν ἀπειθεῖς ἀχάριστοι ἀνόσιοι For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3 ἄστοργοι ἄσπονδοι διάβολοι ἀκρατεῖς ἀνήμεροι ἀφιλάγαθοι heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,
4 προδόται προπετεῖς τετυφωμένοι φιλήδονοι μᾶλλον ἢ φιλόθεοι treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—
5 ἔχοντες μόρφωσιν εὐσεβείας τὴν δὲ δύναμιν αὐτῆς ἠρνημένοι καὶ τούτους ἀποτρέπου having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
6 Ἐκ τούτων γάρ εἰσιν οἱ ἐνδύνοντες εἰς τὰς οἰκίας καὶ αἰχμαλωτίζοντες γυναικάρια σεσωρευμένα ἁμαρτίαις ἀγόμενα ἐπιθυμίαις ποικίλαις For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires,
7 πάντοτε μανθάνοντα καὶ μηδέποτε εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν ἀληθείας ἐλθεῖν δυνάμενα always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth.
8 ὃν τρόπον δὲ Ἰάννης καὶ Ἰαμβρῆς ἀντέστησαν Μωϋσεῖ οὕτως καὶ οὗτοι ἀνθίστανται τῇ ἀληθείᾳ ἄνθρωποι κατεφθαρμένοι τὸν νοῦν ἀδόκιμοι περὶ τὴν πίστιν Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.
9 ἀλλ’ οὐ προκόψουσιν ἐπὶ πλεῖον ἡ γὰρ ἄνοια αὐτῶν ἔκδηλος ἔσται πᾶσιν ὡς καὶ ἡ ἐκείνων ἐγένετο But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.
10 Σὺ δὲ παρηκολούθησάς μου τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ τῇ ἀγωγῇ τῇ προθέσει τῇ πίστει τῇ μακροθυμίᾳ τῇ ἀγάπῃ τῇ ὑπομονῇ You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance,
11 τοῖς διωγμοῖς τοῖς παθήμασιν οἷά μοι ἐγένετο ἐν Ἀντιοχείᾳ ἐν Ἰκονίῳ ἐν Λύστροις οἵους διωγμοὺς ὑπήνεγκα καὶ ἐκ πάντων με ἐρρύσατο ὁ Κύριος my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.
12 καὶ πάντες δὲ οἱ θέλοντες ζῆν εὐσεβῶς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ διωχθήσονται Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,
13 πονηροὶ δὲ ἄνθρωποι καὶ γόητες προκόψουσιν ἐπὶ τὸ χεῖρον πλανῶντες καὶ πλανώμενοι while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.
14 Σὺ δὲ μένε ἐν οἷς ἔμαθες καὶ ἐπιστώθης εἰδὼς παρὰ τίνων ἔμαθες But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,
15 καὶ ὅτι ἀπὸ βρέφους [τὰ] ἱερὰ γράμματα οἶδας τὰ δυνάμενά σε σοφίσαι εἰς σωτηρίαν διὰ πίστεως τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
16 πᾶσα γραφὴ θεόπνευστος καὶ ὠφέλιμος πρὸς διδασκαλίαν πρὸς ἐλεγμόν πρὸς ἐπανόρθωσιν πρὸς παιδείαν τὴν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
17 ἵνα ἄρτιος ᾖ ὁ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἄνθρωπος πρὸς πᾶν ἔργον ἀγαθὸν ἐξηρτισμένος that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
