Then another message came to me from the LORD:1The word of the LORD came to me:
“Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her detestable sins.2"Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her abominable practices
Give her this message from the Sovereign LORD: You are nothing but a Canaanite! Your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.3and say, 'This is what the sovereign LORD says to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.
On the day you were born, no one cared about you. Your umbilical cord was not cut, and you were never washed, rubbed with salt, and wrapped in cloth.4As for your birth, on the day you were born your umbilical cord was not cut, nor were you washed in water; you were certainly not rubbed down with salt, nor wrapped with blankets.
No one had the slightest interest in you; no one pitied you or cared for you. On the day you were born, you were unwanted, dumped in a field and left to die.5No eye took pity on you to do even one of these things for you to spare you; you were thrown out into the open field because you were detested on the day you were born.
“But I came by and saw you there, helplessly kicking about in your own blood. As you lay there, I said, ‘Live!’6"'I passed by you and saw you kicking around helplessly in your blood. I said to you as you lay there in your blood, "Live!" I said to you as you lay there in your blood, "Live!"
And I helped you to thrive like a plant in the field. You grew up and became a beautiful jewel. Your breasts became full, and your body hair grew, but you were still naked.7I made you plentiful like sprouts in a field; you grew tall and came of age so that you could wear jewelry. Your breasts had formed and your hair had grown, but you were still naked and bare.
And when I passed by again, I saw that you were old enough for love. So I wrapped my cloak around you to cover your nakedness and declared my marriage vows. I made a covenant with you, says the Sovereign LORD, and you became mine.8"'Then I passed by you and watched you, noticing that you had reached the age for love. I spread my cloak over you and covered your nakedness. I swore a solemn oath to you and entered into a marriage covenant with you, declares the sovereign LORD, and you became mine.
“Then I bathed you and washed off your blood, and I rubbed fragrant oils into your skin.9"'Then I bathed you in water, washed the blood off you, and anointed you with fragrant oil.
I gave you expensive clothing of fine linen and silk, beautifully embroidered, and sandals made of fine goatskin leather.10I dressed you in embroidered clothing and put fine leather sandals on your feet. I wrapped you with fine linen and covered you with silk.
I gave you lovely jewelry, bracelets, beautiful necklaces,11I adorned you with jewelry. I put bracelets on your hands and a necklace around your neck.
a ring for your nose, earrings for your ears, and a lovely crown for your head.12I put a ring in your nose, earrings on your ears, and a beautiful crown on your head.
And so you were adorned with gold and silver. Your clothes were made of fine linen and costly fabric and were beautifully embroidered. You ate the finest foods—choice flour, honey, and olive oil—and became more beautiful than ever. You looked like a queen, and so you were!13You were adorned with gold and silver, while your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidery. You ate the finest flour, honey, and olive oil. You became extremely beautiful and attained the position of royalty.
Your fame soon spread throughout the world because of your beauty. I dressed you in my splendor and perfected your beauty, says the Sovereign LORD.14Your fame spread among the nations because of your beauty; your beauty was perfect because of the splendor which I bestowed on you, declares the sovereign LORD.
“But you thought your fame and beauty were your own. So you gave yourself as a prostitute to every man who came along. Your beauty was theirs for the asking.15"'But you trusted in your beauty and capitalized on your fame by becoming a prostitute. You offered your sexual favors to every man who passed by so that your beauty became his.
You used the lovely things I gave you to make shrines for idols, where you played the prostitute. Unbelievable! How could such a thing ever happen?16You took some of your clothing and made for yourself decorated high places; you engaged in prostitution on them. You went to him to become his.
You took the very jewels and gold and silver ornaments I had given you and made statues of men and worshiped them. This is adultery against me!17You also took your beautiful jewelry, made of my gold and my silver I had given to you, and made for yourself male images and engaged in prostitution with them.
You used the beautifully embroidered clothes I gave you to dress your idols. Then you used my special oil and my incense to worship them.18You took your embroidered clothing and used it to cover them; you offered my olive oil and my incense to them.
Imagine it! You set before them as a sacrifice the choice flour, olive oil, and honey I had given you, says the Sovereign LORD.19As for my food that I gave you--the fine flour, olive oil, and honey I fed you--you placed it before them as a soothing aroma. That is exactly what happened, declares the sovereign LORD.
“Then you took your sons and daughters—the children you had borne to me—and sacrificed them to your gods. Was your prostitution not enough?20"'You took your sons and your daughters whom you bore to me and you sacrificed them as food for the idols to eat. As if your prostitution not enough,
Must you also slaughter my children by sacrificing them to idols?21you slaughtered my children and sacrificed them to the idols.
In all your years of adultery and detestable sin, you have not once remembered the days long ago when you lay naked in a field, kicking about in your own blood.22And with all your abominable practices and prostitution you did not remember the days of your youth when you were naked and bare, kicking around in your blood.
“What sorrow awaits you, says the Sovereign LORD. In addition to all your other wickedness,23"'After all of your evil--"Woe! Woe to you!" declares the sovereign LORD--
you built a pagan shrine and put altars to idols in every town square.24you built yourself a chamber and put up a pavilion in every public square.
On every street corner you defiled your beauty, offering your body to every passerby in an endless stream of prostitution.25At the head of every street you erected your pavilion and you disgraced your beauty when you spread your legs to every passerby and multiplied your promiscuity.
Then you added lustful Egypt to your lovers, provoking my anger with your increasing promiscuity.26You engaged in prostitution with the Egyptians, your sexually aroused neighbors, multiplying your promiscuity and provoking me to anger.
That is why I struck you with my fist and reduced your boundaries. I handed you over to your enemies, the Philistines, and even they were shocked by your lewd conduct.27So see here, I have stretched out my hand against you and cut off your rations. I have delivered you into the power of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed by your obscene conduct.
You have prostituted yourself with the Assyrians, too. It seems you can never find enough new lovers! And after your prostitution there, you still were not satisfied.28You engaged in prostitution with the Assyrians because your sexual desires were insatiable; you prostituted yourself with them and yet you were still not satisfied.
You added to your lovers by embracing Babylonia, the land of merchants, but you still weren’t satisfied.29Then you multiplied your promiscuity to the land of merchants, Babylonia, but you were not satisfied there either.
“What a sick heart you have, says the Sovereign LORD, to do such things as these, acting like a shameless prostitute.30"'How sick is your heart, declares the sovereign LORD, when you perform all of these acts, the deeds of a bold prostitute.
You build your pagan shrines on every street corner and your altars to idols in every square. In fact, you have been worse than a prostitute, so eager for sin that you have not even demanded payment.31When you built your chamber at the head of every street and put up your pavilion in every public square, you were not like a prostitute, because you scoffed at payment.
Yes, you are an adulterous wife who takes in strangers instead of her own husband.32"'Adulterous wife, who prefers strangers instead of her own husband!
Prostitutes charge for their services—but not you! You give gifts to your lovers, bribing them to come and have sex with you.33All prostitutes receive payment, but instead you give gifts to every one of your lovers. You bribe them to come to you from all around for your sexual favors!
So you are the opposite of other prostitutes. You pay your lovers instead of their paying you! Judgment on Jerusalem’s Prostitution34You were different from other prostitutes because no one solicited you. When you gave payment and no payment was given to you, you became the opposite!
“Therefore, you prostitute, listen to this message from the LORD!35"'Therefore O prostitute, hear the word of the LORD:
This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because you have poured out your lust and exposed yourself in prostitution to all your lovers, and because you have worshiped detestable idols, and because you have slaughtered your children as sacrifices to your gods,36This is what the sovereign LORD says: Because your lust was poured out and your nakedness was uncovered in your prostitution with your lovers, and because of all your detestable idols, and because of the blood of your children you have given to them,
this is what I am going to do. I will gather together all your allies—the lovers with whom you have sinned, both those you loved and those you hated—and I will strip you naked in front of them so they can stare at you.37therefore, take note: I am about to gather all your lovers whom you enjoyed, both all those you loved and all those you hated. I will gather them against you from all around, and I will expose your nakedness to them, and they will see all your nakedness.
I will punish you for your murder and adultery. I will cover you with blood in my jealous fury.38I will punish you as an adulteress and murderer deserves. I will avenge your bloody deeds with furious rage.
Then I will give you to these many nations who are your lovers, and they will destroy you. They will knock down your pagan shrines and the altars to your idols. They will strip you and take your beautiful jewels, leaving you stark naked.39I will give you into their hands and they will destroy your chambers and tear down your pavilions. They will strip you of your clothing and take your beautiful jewelry and leave you naked and bare.
They will band together in a mob to stone you and cut you up with swords.40They will summon a mob who will stone you and hack you in pieces with their swords.
They will burn your homes and punish you in front of many women. I will stop your prostitution and end your payments to your many lovers.41They will burn down your houses and execute judgments on you in front of many women. Thus I will put a stop to your prostitution, and you will no longer give gifts to your clients.
“Then at last my fury against you will be spent, and my jealous anger will subside. I will be calm and will not be angry with you anymore.42I will exhaust my rage on you, and then my fury will turn from you. I will calm down and no longer be angry.
But first, because you have not remembered your youth but have angered me by doing all these evil things, I will fully repay you for all of your sins, says the Sovereign LORD. For you have added lewd acts to all your detestable sins.43"'Because you did not remember the days of your youth and have enraged me with all these deeds, I hereby repay you for what you have done, declares the sovereign LORD. Have you not engaged in prostitution on top of all your other abominable practices?
Everyone who makes up proverbs will say of you, ‘Like mother, like daughter.’44"'Observe--everyone who quotes proverbs will quote this proverb about you: "Like mother, like daughter."
For your mother loathed her husband and her children, and so do you. And you are exactly like your sisters, for they despised their husbands and their children. Truly your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.45You are the daughter of your mother, who detested her husband and her sons, and you are the sister of your sisters who detested their husbands and their sons. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite.
“Your older sister was Samaria, who lived with her daughters in the north. Your younger sister was Sodom, who lived with her daughters in the south.46Your older sister was Samaria, who lived north of you with her daughters, and your younger sister, who lived south of you, was Sodom with her daughters.
But you have not merely sinned as they did. You quickly surpassed them in corruption.47Have you not copied their behavior and practiced their abominable deeds? In a short time you became even more depraved in all your conduct than they were!
As surely as I live, says the Sovereign LORD, Sodom and her daughters were never as wicked as you and your daughters.48As surely as I live, declares the sovereign LORD, your sister Sodom and her daughters never behaved as wickedly as you and your daughters have behaved.
Sodom’s sins were pride, gluttony, and laziness, while the poor and needy suffered outside her door.49"'See here--this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters had majesty, abundance of food, and enjoyed carefree ease, but they did not help the poor and needy.
She was proud and committed detestable sins, so I wiped her out, as you have seen.50They were haughty and practiced abominable deeds before me. Therefore when I saw it I removed them.
“Even Samaria did not commit half your sins. You have done far more detestable things than your sisters ever did. They seem righteous compared to you.51Samaria has not committed half the sins you have; you have done more abominable deeds than they did. You have made your sisters appear righteous with all the abominable things you have done.
Shame on you! Your sins are so terrible that you make your sisters seem righteous, even virtuous.52So now, bear your disgrace, because you have given your sisters reason to justify their behavior. Because the sins you have committed were more abominable than those of your sisters; they have become more righteous than you. So now, be ashamed and bear the disgrace of making your sisters appear righteous.
“But someday I will restore the fortunes of Sodom and Samaria, and I will restore you, too.53"'I will restore their fortunes, the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters, and the fortunes of Samaria and her daughters (along with your fortunes among them),
Then you will be truly ashamed of everything you have done, for your sins make them feel good in comparison.54so that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all you have done in consoling them.
Yes, your sisters, Sodom and Samaria, and all their people will be restored, and at that time you also will be restored.55As for your sisters, Sodom and her daughters will be restored to their former status, Samaria and her daughters will be restored to their former status, and you and your daughters will be restored to your former status.
In your proud days you held Sodom in contempt.56In your days of majesty, was not Sodom your sister a byword in your mouth,
But now your greater wickedness has been exposed to all the world, and you are the one who is scorned—by Edom and all her neighbors and by Philistia.57before your evil was exposed? Now you have become an object of scorn to the daughters of Aram and all those around her and to the daughters of the Philistines--those all around you who despise you.
This is your punishment for all your lewdness and detestable sins, says the LORD.58You must bear your punishment for your obscene conduct and your abominable practices, declares the LORD.
“Now this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will give you what you deserve, for you have taken your solemn vows lightly by breaking your covenant.59"'For this is what the sovereign LORD says: I will deal with you according to what you have done when you despised your oath by breaking your covenant.
Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you when you were young, and I will establish an everlasting covenant with you.60Yet I will remember the covenant I made with you in the days of your youth, and I will establish a lasting covenant with you.
Then you will remember with shame all the evil you have done. I will make your sisters, Samaria and Sodom, to be your daughters, even though they are not part of our covenant.61Then you will remember your conduct, and be ashamed when you receive your older and younger sisters. I will give them to you as daughters, but not on account of my covenant with you.
And I will reaffirm my covenant with you, and you will know that I am the LORD.62I will establish my covenant with you, and then you will know that I am the LORD.
You will remember your sins and cover your mouth in silent shame when I forgive you of all that you have done. I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken!”63Then you will remember, be ashamed, and remain silent when I make atonement for all you have done, declares the sovereign LORD.'"
