Mark 10
KJV Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT GRK]
King James BibleNew Living Translation
And he arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto him again; and, as he was wont, he taught them again.1Then Jesus left Capernaum and went down to the region of Judea and into the area east of the Jordan River. Once again crowds gathered around him, and as usual he was teaching them.
And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting him.2Some Pharisees came and tried to trap him with this question: “Should a man be allowed to divorce his wife?”
And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?3Jesus answered them with a question: “What did Moses say in the law about divorce?”
And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.4“Well, he permitted it,” they replied. “He said a man can give his wife a written notice of divorce and send her away.”
And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.5But Jesus responded, “He wrote this commandment only as a concession to your hard hearts.
But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.6 But ‘God made them male and female’ from the beginning of creation.
For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;7 ‘This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife,
And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.8 and the two are united into one.’ Since they are no longer two but one,
What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.9 let no one split apart what God has joined together.”
And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter.10Later, when he was alone with his disciples in the house, they brought up the subject again.
And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her.11He told them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery against her.
And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.12 And if a woman divorces her husband and marries someone else, she commits adultery.” Jesus Blesses the Children
And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them.13One day some parents brought their children to Jesus so he could touch and bless them. But the disciples scolded the parents for bothering him.
But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.14When Jesus saw what was happening, he was angry with his disciples. He said to them, “Let the children come to me. Don’t stop them! For the Kingdom of God belongs to those who are like these children.
Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.15 I tell you the truth, anyone who doesn’t receive the Kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”
And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them.16Then he took the children in his arms and placed his hands on their heads and blessed them. The Rich Man
And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?17As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked. “Only God is truly good.
Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.19 But to answer your question, you know the commandments: ‘You must not murder. You must not commit adultery. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. You must not cheat anyone. Honor your father and mother.’ ”
And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.20“Teacher,” the man replied, “I’ve obeyed all these commandments since I was young.”
Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.21Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.22At this the man’s face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!”
And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!24This amazed them. But Jesus said again, “Dear children, it is very hard to enter the Kingdom of God.
It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.25 In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”
And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?26The disciples were astounded. “Then who in the world can be saved?” they asked.
And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.27Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”
Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.28Then Peter began to speak up. “We’ve given up everything to follow you,” he said.
And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's,29 “Yes,” Jesus replied, “and I assure you that everyone who has given up house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or property, for my sake and for the Good News,
But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.30 will receive now in return a hundred times as many houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and property—along with persecution. And in the world to come that person will have eternal life.
But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.31 But many who are the greatest now will be least important then, and those who seem least important now will be the greatest then. ” Jesus Again Predicts His Death
And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,32They were now on the way up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. The disciples were filled with awe, and the people following behind were overwhelmed with fear. Taking the twelve disciples aside, Jesus once more began to describe everything that was about to happen to him.
Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:33 “Listen,” he said, “we’re going up to Jerusalem, where the Son of Man will be betrayed to the leading priests and the teachers of religious law. They will sentence him to die and hand him over to the Romans.
And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.34 They will mock him, spit on him, flog him with a whip, and kill him, but after three days he will rise again.” Jesus Teaches about Serving Others
And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.35Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came over and spoke to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do us a favor.”
And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?36 “What is your request?” he asked.
They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.37They replied, “When you sit on your glorious throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left.”
But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?38But Jesus said to them, “You don’t know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink? Are you able to be baptized with the baptism of suffering I must be baptized with?”
And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:39“Oh yes,” they replied, “we are able!” Then Jesus told them, “You will indeed drink from my bitter cup and be baptized with my baptism of suffering.
But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.40 But I have no right to say who will sit on my right or my left. God has prepared those places for the ones he has chosen.”
And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.41When the ten other disciples heard what James and John had asked, they were indignant.
But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.42So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers in this world lord it over their people, and officials flaunt their authority over those under them.
But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:43 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant,
And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.44 and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else.
For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus
And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.46Then they reached Jericho, and as Jesus and his disciples left town, a large crowd followed him. A blind beggar named Bartimaeus (son of Timaeus) was sitting beside the road.
And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.47When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus of Nazareth was nearby, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.48“Be quiet!” many of the people yelled at him. But he only shouted louder, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.49When Jesus heard him, he stopped and said, “Tell him to come here.” So they called the blind man. “Cheer up,” they said. “Come on, he’s calling you!”
And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.50Bartimaeus threw aside his coat, jumped up, and came to Jesus.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked. “My Rabbi, ” the blind man said, “I want to see!”
And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.52And Jesus said to him, “Go, for your faith has healed you.” Instantly the man could see, and he followed Jesus down the road.
