This is the beginning of the gospel of Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.1The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God,
As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "See! I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way. 2as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way" --
He is a voice calling out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way for the Lord! Make his paths straight!'" 3"a voice of one calling in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'"
John was baptizing in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism about repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
People from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were flocking to him, being baptized by him while they confessed their sins. 5The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
Now John was dressed in camel's hair with a leather belt around his waist. He ate grasshoppers and wild honey. 6John wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
He kept proclaiming, "The one who is coming after me is stronger than I am, and I am not worthy to bend down and untie his sandal straps. 7And this was his message: "After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
I baptized you with water, but it is he who will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 9At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
Just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens split open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 10Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
Then a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love. I am pleased with you!"11And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
At once the Spirit drove him into the wilderness. 12At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness,
He was in the wilderness for 40 days being tempted by Satan. He was among wild animals, and angels were ministering to him.13and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.
Now after John had been arrested, Jesus went to Galilee and proclaimed the gospel about the kingdom of God. 14After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.
He said, "The time is now! The kingdom of God is near! Repent, and keep believing the gospel!"15"The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!"
While Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the sea because they were fishermen. 16As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.
Jesus told them, "Follow me, and I'll make you fishers of people!" 17"Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people."
So immediately they left their nets and followed him. 18At once they left their nets and followed him.
Going on a little farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat repairing their nets. 19When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.
He immediately called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.20Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
Then they went to Capernaum. As soon as it was the Sabbaths, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. 21They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach.
The people were utterly amazed at his teaching, because he was teaching them like one with authority, and not like their scribes. 22The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law.
All of a sudden, there was a man in their synagogue who had an unclean spirit! He screamed, 23Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out,
"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!"24"What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!"
But Jesus rebuked him. "Be quiet," he ordered, "and come out of him!" 25"Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!"
At this, the unclean spirit shook the man, cried out with a loud voice, and came out of him.26The impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek.
All the people were so stunned that they kept saying to each other, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He tells even the unclean spirits what to do, and they obey him!" 27The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him."
At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.28News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee.
After they left the synagogue, they went directly to the house of Simon and Andrew, along with James and John. 29As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew.
Now Simon's mother-in-law was lying in bed, sick with a fever, so they promptly told Jesus about her. 30Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her.
He went up to her, took her by the hand, and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began serving them. 31So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
When evening came, after the sun had set, people started bringing to him everyone who was sick or possessed by demons. 32That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed.
In fact, the whole city gathered at the door. 33The whole town gathered at the door,
He healed many who were sick with various diseases and drove out many demons. However, he wouldn't allow the demons to speak because they knew who he was.34and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
In the morning, while it was still very dark, Jesus got up and went to a deserted place and prayed there. 35Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
Simon and his companions searched frantically for him. 36Simon and his companions went to look for him,
When they found him, they told him, "Everyone's looking for you."37and when they found him, they exclaimed: "Everyone is looking for you!"
"Let's go to the neighboring town," he replied, "so I can preach there, too, because that's why I came." 38Jesus replied, "Let us go somewhere else--to the nearby villages--so I can preach there also. That is why I have come."
So he went throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.39So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
Then a leper came to Jesus and began pleading with him. He fell on his knees and told him, "If you want to, you can make me clean."40A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, "If you are willing, you can make me clean."
Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand, touched him, and told him, "I do want to. Be made clean!" 41Jesus was indignant. He reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am willing," he said. "Be clean!"
Instantly the leprosy left him, and he was clean.42Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cleansed.
Then Jesus sternly warned him and encouraged him to go at once. 43Jesus sent him away at once with a strong warning:
He told the man, "Be sure that you don't tell anyone. Instead, go and show yourself to the priest, and then offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded as proof to the authorities."44"See that you don't tell this to anyone. But go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded for your cleansing, as a testimony to them."
But when the man left, he began to proclaim it freely. He spread the news so widely that Jesus could no longer enter a town openly, but had to stay out in deserted places. Still, people kept coming to him from everywhere.45Instead he went out and began to talk freely, spreading the news. As a result, Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere.
