my King and my God,

Though David was Israel’s king, he recognized that he lived under the rule of the true King. God was not distant or merely national; He was David’s covenant God, personally known and worshiped.

Psa 145:1 A Psalm of praise. Of David. I will exalt You,…
Psa 47:7 For God is King of all the earth; sing to Him…

for to You I pray.

For You are not a God who delights in wickedness;

God’s character stands opposed to the immoral and unpredictable gods worshiped by Israel’s neighbors. He does not approve sin, excuse it, or find pleasure in human rebellion. His judgments flow from His perfect righteousness.

Psa 11:5 The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked.…
Hab 1:13 Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil,…
Pro 15:9 The LORD detests the way of the wicked…

no evil can dwell with You.

Sin cannot remain in God’s holy presence. The restricted access to the sanctuary under the Law illustrated this reality, requiring purification and priestly mediation. Humanity’s need for reconciliation is ultimately fulfilled through Jesus Christ, who brings His people into fellowship with God.

Psa 101:7 No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house…
1Jn 1:5 And this is the message we have heard from Him…
Psa 15:1-2 A Psalm of David. O LORD, who may abide in Your tent?…

The boastful cannot stand in Your presence;

God’s holiness excludes those who exalt themselves and refuse His authority. In David’s day, pride often appeared in rulers, warriors, and the wealthy who trusted their power rather than the Lord. Such self-reliance cannot endure before the God who judges every heart and requires humility from those who approach Him.

Psa 101:5 Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret,…
Psa 1:5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,…
Jas 4:6 But He gives us more grace. This is why it says:…

You hate all workers of iniquity.

God stands in settled opposition to those who practice evil. His hatred is directed against sin and the rebellious conduct that defies His righteous rule. David’s words reflect the covenant order of Israel, where justice, truth, and obedience were essential to life before God. Those who persist in wrongdoing face His judgment, while repentance opens the way to forgiveness through God’s mercy.

Psa 11:5 The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked.…
Psa 101:8 Every morning I will remove all the wicked of the land…
Psa 14:4 Will the workers of iniquity never learn?…

You destroy those who tell lies;

God’s judgment falls on those who persist in falsehood. Lies corrupt justice, betray neighbors, and undermine the trust necessary for covenant life among God’s people. Their end shows that deceit is not a minor fault but rebellion against the God of truth.

Pro 19:9 A false witness will not go unpunished…
Psa 101:7 No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house…
Rev 21:8 But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable…

the LORD abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit.

God rejects those who combine violence with treachery, using lies and cruelty to harm others. Such conduct marked the wicked throughout Israel’s history and stands opposed to God’s righteous rule. The Lord sees hidden schemes as well as open violence and will judge both.

Pro 6:16-19 There are six things that the LORD hates,…
Psa 55:23 But You, O God, will bring them down to the Pit…
Psa 11:5 The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked.…

But I will enter Your house by the abundance of Your loving devotion;

David approaches God’s dwelling place not on the basis of his own righteousness, but because of God’s faithful covenant mercy. God had chosen to dwell among Israel at the tabernacle, providing a place where His people could draw near in worship.

Psa 69:13 But my prayer to You, O LORD, is for a time of favor.…
Psa 84:10 For better is one day in Your courts than a thousand…
Heb 10:19-22 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter…

in reverence I will bow down

David’s worship is marked by humility before the holy King. Bowing expresses submission, honor, and recognition that God alone is worthy of worship.

Psa 95:6 O come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel…
2Ch 7:3 When all the Israelites saw the fire coming down…
Heb 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving an unshakable kingdom,…

toward Your holy temple.

During David’s reign, God’s earthly sanctuary was the tabernacle, since Solomon’s temple had not yet been built. It represented God’s presence among His people and directed their worship toward the Lord who is holy and set apart.

Psa 138:2 I bow down toward Your holy temple and give thanks…
Jon 2:4 At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight;…
1Ki 8:29-30 May Your eyes be open toward this temple night and day,…

Lead me, O LORD, in Your righteousness

David asks God to guide him according to God’s own holy standard rather than his own judgment. He depends on the LORD to direct his conduct and keep him in a path that honors God.

Psa 23:3 He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths…
Psa 25:4-5 Show me Your ways, O LORD; teach me Your paths.…
Psa 143:10 Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God.…

because of my enemies;

Surrounded by those who opposed him and sought his downfall, David needed wisdom, protection, and steady leadership. His enemies created pressure to act rashly, but he turns to God rather than relying on human strength.

Psa 27:11-12 Teach me Your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path…
Psa 59:1 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me…
Psa 31:15 My times are in Your hands; deliver me from my enemies…

make straight Your way before me.

Pro 3:6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths…
Isa 40:3 A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way for the LORD…
Heb 12:13 Make straight paths for your feet, so that the lame…

For not a word they speak can be trusted;

David describes enemies whose speech is wholly unreliable. Their words conceal hostility rather than communicate truth, revealing a community damaged by betrayal and false witness.

Psa 12:2 They lie to one another; they speak with flattering lips…
Pro 12:22 Lying lips are detestable to the LORD…
Jer 9:3-6 They bend their tongues like bows; lies prevail over truth.…

destruction lies within them.

Their inward thoughts are bent toward ruin. The violence they speak and pursue begins in hearts hardened against God and others.

Pro 24:2 for their hearts devise violence,…
Mat 15:19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery…
Jas 1:15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;…

Their throats are open graves;

Their speech brings corruption and death, like an exposed tomb that spreads defilement. Rather than giving life or counsel, their words consume and destroy.

Rom 3:13 Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit…
Isa 5:14 Therefore Sheol enlarges its throat and opens wide…
Pro 30:15-16 The leech has two daughters: Give and Give.…

their tongues practice deceit.

Deception is not occasional but deliberate and habitual. Their flattering or persuasive speech serves selfish and harmful purposes, exposing the moral corruption beneath their outward words.

Jer 9:8 Their tongues are deadly arrows; they speak deception.…
Jas 3:8 but no man can tame the tongue.…
Pro 26:28 A lying tongue hates those it crushes…

Declare them guilty, O God;

David places the judgment of his enemies in God’s hands, acknowledging Him as the righteous Judge.

Psa 109:7 When he is tried, let him be found guilty…
Nam 1:3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in power;…
Exo 23:7 Stay far away from a false accusation. Do not kill…

let them fall by their own devices.

He asks that their own schemes bring the ruin they intended for others.

Pro 1:31 So they will eat the fruit of their own way,…
Pro 26:27 He who digs a pit will fall into it and he who rolls a stone…
Psa 7:15-16 He has dug a hole and hollowed it out;…

Drive them out for their many transgressions,

Their persistent sins warrant removal from the place of blessing and security.

Ezk 20:38 And I will purge you of those who rebel against Me.…
Jer 7:15 And I will cast you out of My presence,…
Lev 18:28 So if you defile the land, it will vomit you out…

for they have rebelled against You.

Their opposition to David is ultimately rebellion against God and His rule.

Neh 9:26 But they were disobedient and rebelled against You;…
Jer 2:29 Why do you bring a case against Me? You have all rebelled…
Isa 1:2 Listen, O heavens, and give ear, O earth…

But let all who take refuge in You rejoice;

God is the secure refuge of those who trust Him amid opposition and danger. Their joy rests on His faithful protection rather than on favorable circumstances.

Psa 64:10 Let the righteous rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in Him…
Psa 34:22 The LORD redeems His servants, and none who take refuge…
Psa 37:40 The LORD helps and delivers them; He rescues…

let them ever shout for joy.

Their rejoicing is open and continual because the Lord remains present with His people and hears the prayers of the righteous.

Psa 33:1 Rejoice in the LORD, O righteous ones; it is fitting…
Psa 32:11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous ones;…
Isa 12:6 Cry out and sing, O citizen of Zion, for great among you…

May You shelter them,

David asks God to spread His protection over those who belong to Him, guarding them from the wicked and preserving them in His care.

Psa 31:20 You hide them in the secret place of Your presence…
Psa 27:5 For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His shelter;…
Psa 17:8 Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow…

that those who love Your name may rejoice in You.

Those who honor God’s character and rule find their gladness in Him. Love for the Lord produces confidence, worship, and lasting joy.

Psa 69:36 The descendants of His servants will inherit it.…
Psa 119:132 Turn to me and show me mercy, as You do to those who love…
Psa 63:11 But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by Him…

For surely You, O LORD, bless the righteous;

God faithfully bestows His favor on those who live in submission to Him. Righteousness does not describe sinless perfection but a life marked by trust in God, obedience to His will, and repentance when sin is exposed. His blessing includes His sustaining care, provision, and approval, even when outward circumstances are difficult.

Pro 10:6 Blessings are on the head of the righteous,…
Pro 3:33 The curse of the LORD is on the house of the wicked…
Psa 37:22 Surely those He blesses will inherit the land.…

You surround them with the shield of Your favor.

The Lord’s favor provides complete protection for His people, like a shield enclosing a soldier in battle. David knew that dangers could come from enemies, injustice, and his own failures, yet God’s care remained greater than every threat. His protection does not promise freedom from hardship, but it secures His people within His faithful purpose.

Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram…
Psa 18:30 As for God, His way is perfect; the word of the LORD…
Psa 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and a shield;…
