Berean Study Bible Deliver Me, O LORD!David wrote amid Absalom’s rebellion, when he was forced to leave Jerusalem as many in Israel joined his son’s uprising. The events recorded in 2 Samuel 15–18 brought personal grief and national danger: David’s own family was divided, his throne was threatened, and the kingdom faced civil war. 2Sa 15:13-14 Then a messenger came to David and reported,… O LORD, how my foes have increased! Surrounded by former supporters who had turned to Absalom, David brought his distress directly to the Lord. The rebellion had grown beyond a private conflict into a widespread challenge to his rule. 2Sa 15:12 While Absalom was offering the sacrifices, … How many rise up against me! The opposition was active and numerous, with Israelites gathering against God’s anointed king. David’s words reveal the severity of his danger while directing attention to the Lord as his only secure help. Psa 59:1-3 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me… Many say of me, As David fled Jerusalem during Absalom’s rebellion, enemies and former supporters alike concluded that his reign was finished. Their words deepened the danger of his flight by portraying him as abandoned and without hope. Psa 31:13 For I hear the slander of many; there is terror… “God will not deliver him.” David’s opponents interpreted his suffering as evidence that the Lord had rejected him. Their accusation directly challenged God’s covenant purposes for David and sought to turn his crisis into proof of divine abandonment. Psa 71:11 “God has forsaken him; pursue him and seize him”… Selah The pause, a musical or liturgical marker for reflection, gives weight to the charge and leaves David’s distress before the Lord, preparing for his confession of confidence in God’s protection. Psa 9:16 The LORD is known by the justice He brings;… But You, O LORD, are a shield around me, David contrasts the threats surrounding him with the LORD’s complete protection. Though enemies pressed in during Absalom’s rebellion, God remained his defense on every side. Psa 5:12 For surely You, O LORD, bless the righteous;… my glory, David’s honor and security did not rest in his throne, reputation, or military strength. The LORD Himself was the source of his dignity and hope. Psa 62:7 My salvation and my honor rest on God, my strong rock;… and the One who lifts my head. God would raise David from shame, danger, and grief. The bowed king trusted the LORD to restore him and vindicate him against those who sought his downfall. Psa 27:6 Then my head will be held high above my enemies around me.… To the LORD I cry aloud, David openly brings his distress before the covenant God, seeking help with urgency and confidence. His prayer is not private resignation but a direct appeal to the One who rules over his enemies and preserves His people. Psa 142:1 A Maskil of David, when he was in the cave. A prayer.… and He answers me God’s response rests on His faithfulness, not on David’s circumstances. Though surrounded by opposition, David knows the LORD hears the prayers of those who belong to Him. Psa 120:1 A song of ascents. In my distress I cried to the LORD,… from His holy mountain. God’s holy mountain is Zion, where His presence was associated with the tabernacle and later the temple in Jerusalem. From His chosen dwelling place, the holy King hears and acts for His servant. Psa 2:6 “I have installed My King on Zion, upon My holy mountain.” Selah The pause, often understood as a musical or liturgical moment for reflection, calls attention to the certainty that God hears and answers. Hab 3:3 God came from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran.… I lie down and sleep; While fleeing Absalom’s rebellion, David rests despite the immediate danger surrounding him. Sleep places him beyond his own ability to guard himself, yet he entrusts his safety to God rather than yielding to fear. Psa 4:8 I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone… I wake again, David’s preservation through the night confirms that his life remains in God’s hands. Though enemies seek his downfall, they cannot overcome the protection God provides. Psa 17:15 As for me, I will behold Your face in righteousness;… for the LORD sustains me. The LORD upholds David in body, mind, and spirit through the crisis. His survival is not credited to royal strength, military power, or favorable circumstances, but to God’s faithful care. Psa 55:22 Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you;… I will not fear David’s confidence rests in the Lord’s protection while he flees from Absalom’s revolt. Though his enemies appear stronger and more numerous, he refuses to be ruled by fear. Psa 118:6 The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid.… the myriads The rebellion gathered large numbers from Israel around Absalom, turning David’s own kingdom against him. The scale of the opposition made his situation humanly desperate. Psa 91:7 Though a thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand… set against me David faced organized hostility from those who had once been his subjects and allies. His danger was not distant or uncertain but deliberately directed against him. Psa 2:2 The kings of the earth take their stand… on every side. Surrounded by threats and without obvious escape, David trusted God to preserve him. The circumstances reveal that security depended not on military strength but on the Lord’s deliverance. Psa 31:13 For I hear the slander of many; there is terror… Arise, O LORD! David appeals to the LORD to act decisively against the forces gathered against him during Absalom’s rebellion. Num 10:35 Whenever the ark set out, Moses would say, “Rise up, O LORD!… Save me, O my God! Though driven from Jerusalem and surrounded by enemies, David rests his appeal on his covenant relationship with God. Psa 7:1 A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the LORD… Strike all my enemies on the jaw; God’s intervention would bring shame and defeat upon those who opposed His anointed king. Job 16:10 They open their mouths against me and strike my cheeks… break the teeth of the wicked. The image portrays the removal of their power to threaten, accuse, and destroy. Psa 58:6 O God, shatter their teeth in their mouths;… Salvation belongs to the LORD; David, driven from Jerusalem by Absalom’s rebellion, recognizes that deliverance does not rest in military strength, loyal supporters, or human strategy. God alone rescues His people from their enemies and preserves His purposes. Jon 2:9 But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice… may Your blessing be on Your people. Though personally endangered, David prays for the welfare of the people of Israel. God’s blessing includes His protection, favor, peace, and faithful care for the covenant people. Psa 28:9 Save Your people and bless Your inheritance;… Selah The musical or liturgical pause calls for reflection on God’s power to save and His gracious blessing upon His people.
