2 Corinthians 7
Berean Study Bible

Paul’s Joy in the Corinthians

Therefore, beloved,

Paul addresses the Corinthian believers with pastoral affection while drawing a conclusion from God’s covenant promises.

2Pe 3:14 Therefore, beloved, as you anticipate these things,…
Eph 5:1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as beloved children,
Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,…

since we have these promises,

God has pledged to dwell with His people, receive them as His own, and be their Father. Through Christ, believers belong to the living God and are called to live accordingly.

2Co 6:16-18 What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols…
2Pe 1:4 Through these He has given us His precious and…
Heb 10:23 Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess…

let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit,

God’s people must reject sins expressed outwardly in conduct and inwardly in desires, attitudes, and motives. Such cleansing involves repentance and separation from practices incompatible with God’s holiness.

1Co 6:19-20 Do you not know that your body is a temple…
Jas 4:8 Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.…
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just…

perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Holiness matures as believers submit every part of life to God. Reverence for His holiness, authority, and coming judgment produces obedient devotion.

Heb 12:14 Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness,…
1Pe 1:15-16 But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy…
1Th 4:3 For it is God’s will that you should be holy:…

Make room for us in your hearts.

Paul urges the Corinthians to restore their affection and confidence in him and his fellow workers. Despite painful tensions in the church, he seeks reconciliation rather than distance, appealing to the bond they share in Christ.

2Co 6:13 As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—…
Php 1:7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you…
1Th 2:17 Brothers, although we were torn away from you…

We have wronged no one,

Paul denies treating anyone unjustly. His ministry among them had not been marked by abuse of authority or harm toward the believers.

Act 25:10 Paul replied, “I am standing before the judgment seat…
Act 28:17 After three days, he called together the leaders of the Jews…
1Sa 24:11 See, my father, look at the corner of your robe…

we have corrupted no one,

Neither Paul nor his companions had led the Corinthians away from the truth or drawn them into moral compromise. Their message and conduct were intended to preserve the church in faithful devotion to Christ.

2Co 11:3 I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived…
2Co 4:2 Instead, we have renounced secret and shameful ways.…
1Th 2:3 For our appeal does not arise from deceit…

we have exploited no one.

Paul had not used the Corinthians for money, influence, or personal advantage. Though some had questioned his motives, he had served them sacrificially and sought their spiritual good.

2Co 12:17 Did I exploit you by anyone I sent you?
1Th 2:5 As you know, we never used words of flattery…
Act 20:33 I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.

I do not say this to condemn you.

Paul’s correction was not a final judgment against the Corinthians. Though he had addressed serious sin and disorder among them, he sought their repentance, restoration, and continued fellowship.

1Co 4:14 I am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you…
Jhn 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world…
Rom 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those…

I have said before that you so occupy our hearts

Paul and his fellow workers retained deep affection for the church despite its failures and past tensions. The Corinthians remained bound to them as spiritual family and partners in the work of Christ.

2Co 6:11-13 We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians.…
Php 1:8 God is my witness how I long for all of you…
1Th 2:8 We cared so deeply that we were delighted to share…

that we live and die together with you.

Paul expressed steadfast loyalty to them in every circumstance. Their welfare, suffering, and future were closely joined to his own, reflecting the shared life and responsibility of believers in the church.

2Co 4:12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.
1Co 12:26 If one part suffers, every part suffers with it;…
Rom 14:8 If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die…

Great is my confidence in you;

Paul’s trust in the Corinthians is striking after the disorders, divisions, and moral failures addressed in his earlier letter. Their repentance and response to correction had demonstrated a renewed willingness to obey Christ and receive apostolic instruction.

2Co 8:22 And we are sending along with them our brother…
2Th 3:4 And we have confidence in the Lord that you…
2Co 2:3 I wrote so that on my arrival I would not be grieved…

great is my pride in you;

Paul rejoiced in what God had accomplished among them. Their changed conduct and earnest concern showed that his labor in Corinth had not been in vain, and he regarded their restoration as a source of legitimate joy.

1Th 2:19-20 After all, who is our hope, our joy, our crown of boasting,…
2Co 8:24 In full view of the churches, then, show these men…
2Co 1:14 as you have already understood us in part,…

I am filled with encouragement;

News of their repentance, brought through Titus, strengthened Paul after a period of deep concern. Their response confirmed that godly sorrow had produced repentance rather than resentment or further rebellion.

1Th 3:7-8 For this reason, brothers, in all our distress…
2Co 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,…
Phm 1:7 I take great joy and encouragement in your love,…

in all our troubles my joy overflows.

Paul’s ministry continued amid opposition, danger, and personal strain, yet the Corinthians’ restoration gave him abundant joy. Their faithfulness became evidence that God was sustaining His church despite hardship.

2Co 6:10 sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich…
Rom 5:3-5 Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings,…
Jas 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials…

For when we arrived in Macedonia,

Paul returned to the region where he had earlier preached in Philippi, Thessalonica, and Berea. He came while awaiting news from Titus about the troubled Corinthian church.

Act 16:9-12 During the night, Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia…
2Co 2:12-13 Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ…

our bodies had no rest,

Travel, ministry demands, and ongoing opposition had left Paul and his companions physically weary.

2Co 6:5 in beatings, imprisonments, and riots;…
2Th 3:8 nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it.…

but we were pressed from every direction—

Difficulties surrounded them as they carried out their work and faced uncertainty over the response of the churches.

2Co 4:8-9 We are hard pressed on all sides, but not crushed;…
2Co 1:8-9 We do not want you to be unaware, brothers,…

conflicts on the outside,

Opposition from hostile crowds and local authorities continued to threaten Paul’s ministry.

Act 14:19-22 Then some Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium…
2Ti 3:11-12 my persecutions, and the sufferings that came upon me…

fears within.

Paul also bore deep concern for the believers under his care, especially the Corinthians, whose repentance and restoration mattered greatly to him.

2Co 11:28-29 Apart from these external trials, I face daily…
Psa 55:4-5 My heart pounds within me, and the terrors of death…

But God,

Paul credits the change in his circumstances to God’s direct care and rule over events.

Eph 2:4 But because of His great love for us, God,…
Gen 50:20 As for you, what you intended against me for evil,…
Rom 5:8 But God proves His love for us in this:…

who comforts the downcast,

God sustains those burdened by distress, discouragement, and pressure.

2Co 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,…
Psa 34:18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite…
Psa 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

comforted us by the arrival of Titus,

Titus returned to Paul in Macedonia with news from Corinth, bringing reassurance about the church’s response and restoring Paul’s joy.

2Co 2:13 I had no peace in my spirit, because I did not find Titus…
2Co 8:17 For not only did he welcome our appeal…
2Co 12:18 I urged Titus to visit you, and I sent our brother with him.…

and not only by his arrival,

Titus came to Paul after visiting Corinth, bringing relief in a time of deep concern over the church’s response to Paul’s correction. His presence itself encouraged Paul, ending uncertainty about the Corinthians’ condition.

2Ti 1:16-18 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus,…
Php 2:19-20 Now I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon…

but also by the comfort he had received from you.

The Corinthians had received Titus warmly and strengthened him through their changed attitude. Their care for him assured Paul that they had taken his concerns seriously.

1Co 16:17-18 I am glad that Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus…
Phm 1:7 I take great joy and encouragement in your love,…

He told us about your longing,

They desired restoration of fellowship with Paul and regretted the strain caused by their earlier conduct.

1Th 3:6 But just now, Timothy has returned from his visit…
2Co 9:14 And their prayers for you will express their affection…

your mourning,

Their sorrow showed repentance over sin and disorder within the church rather than mere regret over consequences.

Jol 2:12-13 “Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to Me…
Jas 4:9 Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter to mourning…

and your zeal for me,

They had renewed their concern for Paul, his ministry, and the authority of the gospel he preached.

Gal 4:14-15 And although my illness was a trial to you,…
2Co 9:2 For I know your eagerness to help, and I have been boasting……

so that I rejoiced all the more.

Titus’s report turned Paul’s grief into joy as he saw evidence of the Corinthians’ repentance and restored devotion.

3Jn 1:4 I have no greater joy than to hear that…
1Th 3:9 How can we adequately thank God for you?…

Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter,

Paul refers to the severe correction he had sent to Corinth concerning sin, disorder, and opposition to his authority. His purpose was not to injure the church but to confront what threatened its faithfulness to Christ.

2Co 2:4 For through many tears I wrote you out of great distress…
2Co 13:10 This is why I write these things while absent,…

I do not regret it.

The correction was necessary because tolerating sin would have harmed the congregation more deeply. Paul remained committed to their restoration, even when faithfulness required painful rebuke.

Psa 119:71 It was good for me to be afflicted, that I might learn…
Heb 12:11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful.…
Pro 3:11-12 My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD,…

Although I did regret it—

Paul had felt the personal burden of causing grief to believers he loved. His concern shows that his apostolic authority was exercised with genuine affection, not harshness or indifference.

2Co 2:1-2 So I made up my mind not to make another painful visit…
2Sa 24:10 After David had numbered the troops, he said to the LORD…

for I see that my letter caused you sorrow,

The Corinthians had been grieved by the seriousness of Paul’s rebuke. Their sorrow exposed the seriousness of their failures and prepared them to respond in repentance.

1Co 5:9-10 I wrote you in my letter not to associate…
2Th 3:14-15 Take note of anyone who does not obey the instructions…
Rev 3:19 Those I love I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be earnest…

but only for a short time—

Their grief was temporary, leading to renewed obedience and reconciliation rather than lasting despair.

Isa 54:7-8 For a brief moment I forsook you, but with great compassion…
2Co 4:17 For our light and momentary affliction…
Psa 30:5 For His anger is fleeting, but His favor lasts a lifetime.…

yet now I rejoice,

Paul rejoiced after learning that the Corinthians had responded rightly to his earlier rebuke. Their correction restored fellowship and showed renewed obedience.

1Th 3:9 How can we adequately thank God for you?…
Php 1:18 What then is the issue? Just this: that in every way…
3Jn 1:4 I have no greater joy than to hear that…

not because you were made sorrowful,

He did not find satisfaction in their distress. His concern was their faithfulness to Christ, not the pain caused by discipline.

2Co 2:4 For through many tears I wrote you out of great distress…
2Co 1:23-24 I call God as my witness that it was in order to spare you…
Heb 12:11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful.…

but because your sorrow led you to repentance.

Their grief moved them to turn from sin and address the wrongdoing that had troubled the church. Their response produced real change rather than temporary regret.

Mat 3:8 Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance.
Act 11:18 When they heard this, they had no further objections,…
Luk 15:7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more joy…

For you felt the sorrow that God had intended,

God used Paul’s rebuke to awaken conviction and lead the Corinthians back to obedience. Their sorrow was directed toward God and His standard of holiness.

Heb 12:5-6 And you have forgotten the exhortation…
Pro 3:11-12 My son, do not reject the discipline of the LORD,…
Rev 3:19 Those I love I rebuke and discipline. Therefore be earnest…

and so were not harmed in any way by us.

Though Paul’s correction was painful, it did not damage them spiritually. It served their restoration and strengthened their relationship with God.

2Co 6:3 We put no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no one…
1Th 2:10 You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous…
1Co 10:32-33 Do not become a stumbling block, whether to Jews or Greeks……

Godly sorrow brings repentance

Godly sorrow is a sincere grief over sin because it offends God. It turns the sinner from rebellion toward obedience and produces a changed life.

Psa 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;…
Ezk 18:30-32 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you…
Luk 15:17-20 Finally he came to his senses and said, …

that leads to salvation

True repentance accompanies saving faith and leads to the salvation God provides through Christ. It marks a decisive break with sin and a return to God.

Act 11:18 When they heard this, they had no further objections,…
Act 3:19 Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped…
Luk 24:47 and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins…

without regret,

Those forgiven by God need not remain bound to their former sins. His forgiveness is complete, and repentance does not end in shame or despair.

Rom 11:29 For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.
1Sa 15:29 Moreover, the Glory of Israel does not lie…
Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,…

but worldly sorrow brings death.

Worldly sorrow grieves over sin’s consequences rather than sin itself. It remains self-focused and does not turn to God, as seen in Judas’s remorse, which ended in destruction rather than repentance.

Mat 27:3-5 When Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that Jesus…
Jas 1:15 Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin;…
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God…

Consider what this godly sorrow has produced in you:

Their grief over sin had led to real repentance rather than regret over consequences. God used Paul’s rebuke to bring them back to obedience and restore their fellowship with Him.

Psa 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;…
Pro 28:13 He who conceals his sins will not prosper,…
Jol 2:12-13 “Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to Me…

what earnestness,

They responded seriously and promptly, showing a renewed determination to do what was right.

Heb 6:11 We want each of you to show this same diligence…
2Pe 1:10 Therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure.…
Rom 12:11 Do not let your zeal subside; keep your spiritual fervor,…

what eagerness to clear yourselves,

They sought to demonstrate that they had not approved of the wrongdoing and were willing to address it openly.

1Pe 3:15 But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord.…
Act 24:16 In this hope, I strive always to maintain a clear conscience…
1Co 4:4 My conscience is clear, but that does not vindicate me.…

what indignation,

They came to hate the sin they had previously tolerated and recognized its offense against God.

Psa 119:53 Rage has taken hold of me because of the wicked…
Mrk 3:5 Jesus looked around at them with anger and sorrow…
Rom 12:9 Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil;…

what alarm,

They understood the seriousness of disobedience and feared the damage it could bring to the church.

Act 2:37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart…
Luk 5:8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees.…
Php 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed…

what longing,

They desired reconciliation with Paul and the restoration of proper fellowship.

2Ti 1:4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you…
Php 1:8 God is my witness how I long for all of you…
1Th 2:17 Brothers, although we were torn away from you…

what zeal,

Their repentance produced active concern for holiness, truth, and the well-being of the congregation.

Jhn 2:17 His disciples remembered that it is written:…
Tit 2:14 He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness…
Rom 10:2 For I testify about them that they are zealous for God,…

what vindication!

By dealing with the matter faithfully, they showed that they would not excuse sin.

Psa 26:1 Of David. Vindicate me, O LORD!…
Job 13:18 See now, I have prepared my case; I know that…
Rom 8:33-34 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect?…

In every way you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

Their response established that the church as a whole had separated itself from the offense and had acted rightly after receiving correction.

1Th 2:10 You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous…
Php 2:15 you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault…
Col 1:22 But now He has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body…

So even though I wrote to you,

Paul recalls the severe letter he had sent concerning a painful situation in Corinth. His purpose was to restore the church through necessary discipline and renewed obedience.

2Co 2:4 For through many tears I wrote you out of great distress…
1Co 4:14 I am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you…

it was not on account of the one who did wrong

The offender’s sin had to be addressed, but Paul’s concern extended beyond the individual and involved the church’s response to evil in its midst.

1Co 5:1-5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality…
Mat 18:15-17 If your brother sins against you, go and confront him…

or the one who was harmed,

The wrongdoing had caused real injury, likely affecting Paul and those closely associated with him. Yet his letter was not written merely to settle a personal grievance.

Phm 1:18-19 But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you…
1Co 6:7-8 The very fact that you have lawsuits among you…

but rather that your earnestness on our behalf

Paul wanted the Corinthians’ readiness to obey God and stand with his apostolic ministry to become evident. Their response showed whether they would take sin and correction seriously.

2Co 8:8 I am not giving a command, but I am testing the sincerity…
2Co 9:2 For I know your eagerness to help, and I have been boasting……

would be made clear to you

Their repentance had revealed a genuine concern for what was right. Paul wanted them to recognize the sincerity demonstrated by their actions.

2Co 8:24 In full view of the churches, then, show these men…
1Co 11:19 And indeed, there must be differences among you…

in the sight of God.

God was the ultimate witness of both Paul’s motives and the Corinthians’ response. Their reconciliation and obedience were matters of accountability before Him.

2Co 4:2 Instead, we have renounced secret and shameful ways.…
2Co 5:11 Therefore, since we know what it means to fear the Lord…

On account of this, we are encouraged.

Paul’s relief followed Titus’s return from Corinth with evidence that the church had received his correction with godly sorrow. Their repentance and renewed obedience showed that his severe letter had accomplished its purpose and that their relationship with him had been restored.

1Th 3:7 For this reason, brothers, in all our distress…
2Co 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,…
2Th 2:16-17 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father,…

In addition to our own encouragement, we were even more delighted by the joy of Titus.

Titus had witnessed the Corinthians’ response firsthand. Their welcome, concern, and willingness to address the sin among them brought him deep joy and confirmed that the congregation was responding faithfully to Paul’s apostolic instruction.

1Th 3:9 How can we adequately thank God for you?…
3Jn 1:4 I have no greater joy than to hear that…
Php 2:17-18 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering…

For his spirit has been refreshed by all of you.

The whole church contributed to Titus’s encouragement through their changed conduct and reception of him. Their unity and repentance strengthened both Titus and Paul, demonstrating that the congregation had moved beyond resistance and was again walking in fellowship and obedience.

Phm 1:7 I take great joy and encouragement in your love,…
1Co 16:18 For they refreshed my spirit and yours as well.…
2Ti 1:16 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus,…

Indeed, I was not embarrassed by anything I had boasted to him about you.

Paul had spoken confidently to Titus about the Corinthians’ willingness to respond to correction. Though their church had faced serious disorder and sin, Paul trusted that many would receive his rebuke and act faithfully.

2Co 8:24 In full view of the churches, then, show these men…
2Co 9:2 For I know your eagerness to help, and I have been boasting……
1Th 2:19-20 After all, who is our hope, our joy, our crown of boasting,…

But just as everything we said to you was true,

Paul’s ministry among them had been marked by honesty. His earlier warnings, instructions, and promises were not empty words but were grounded in the truth of the gospel and his genuine concern for their spiritual welfare.

2Co 4:2 Instead, we have renounced secret and shameful ways.…
2Co 1:18 But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you…
2Co 2:17 For we are not like so many others, who peddle the word of God…

so our boasting to Titus has proved to be true as well.

Titus’s report confirmed that the Corinthians had responded with repentance, earnestness, and renewed affection for Paul. Their conduct vindicated Paul’s confidence and strengthened the bond between Titus, Paul, and the church.

2Co 8:23 As for Titus, he is my partner and fellow worker among you.…
2Co 9:3-4 But I am sending the brothers in order that our boasting…
2Co 12:18 I urged Titus to visit you, and I sent our brother with him.…

And his affection for you is even greater

Titus’s love for the Corinthian believers deepened as he saw their sincere response to Paul’s correction and their renewed desire to walk faithfully.

1Th 2:8 We cared so deeply that we were delighted to share…
Php 1:8 God is my witness how I long for all of you…
2Co 2:4 For through many tears I wrote you out of great distress…

when he remembers that you were all obedient

The church had received Titus’s counsel and responded to Paul’s instructions, demonstrating repentance and a willingness to submit to apostolic authority.

Rom 16:19 Everyone has heard about your obedience…
1Pe 1:14 As obedient children, do not conform to the passions…
1Pe 1:22 Since you have purified your souls by obedience to the truth…

as you welcomed him with fear and trembling.

They received Titus with humility and seriousness, recognizing the weight of the message he carried and the need to address the matters troubling the church.

Eph 6:5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear…
Php 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed…
1Co 2:3 I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling.

I rejoice

Paul’s joy follows Titus’s encouraging report about the Corinthians’ repentance and renewed loyalty. After the painful tensions addressed in earlier correspondence, their response showed that God was working among them.

Php 1:18 What then is the issue? Just this: that in every way…
Php 4:10 Now I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last…
2Jn 1:4 I was overjoyed to find some of your children…

that I can have complete confidence

Paul could again trust their willingness to obey apostolic instruction and to continue in the faith. His confidence rested on the visible fruit of their repentance and reconciliation.

Phm 1:21 Confident of your obedience, I write to you,…
Gal 5:10 I am confident in the Lord that you will…
Php 1:6 being confident of this, that He who began a good work…

in you.

The Corinthian believers lived in a prosperous but morally corrupt city and had faced serious divisions and sins within the church. Yet their response demonstrated genuine spiritual growth and restored fellowship with Paul.

2Co 8:22 And we are sending along with them our brother…
2Co 2:3 I wrote so that on my arrival I would not be grieved…
2Th 3:4 And we have confidence in the Lord that you…
