יֹ֭אמְרוּ גְּאוּלֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר גְּ֝אָלָ֗ם מִיַּד־ צָֽר׃ | Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble | Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, |
וּֽמֵאֲרָצ֗וֹת קִ֫בְּצָ֥ם מִמִּזְרָ֥ח וּמִֽמַּעֲרָ֑ב מִצָּפ֥וֹן וּמִיָּֽם׃ | and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. | those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. |
תָּע֣וּ בַ֭מִּדְבָּר בִּישִׁימ֣וֹן דָּ֑רֶךְ עִ֥יר מ֝וֹשָׁ֗ב לֹ֣א מָצָֽאוּ׃ | Some wandered in desert wastes, finding no way to a city to dwell in; | Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. |
רְעֵבִ֥ים גַּם־ צְמֵאִ֑ים נַ֝פְשָׁ֗ם בָּהֶ֥ם תִּתְעַטָּֽף׃ | hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them. | They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. |
וַיִּצְעֲק֣וּ אֶל־ יְ֭הוָה בַּצַּ֣ר לָהֶ֑ם מִ֝מְּצֽוּקוֹתֵיהֶ֗ם יַצִּילֵֽם׃ | Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. | Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. |
וַ֭יַּֽדְרִיכֵם בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ יְשָׁרָ֑ה לָ֝לֶ֗כֶת אֶל־ עִ֥יר מוֹשָֽׁב׃ | He led them by a straight way till they reached a city to dwell in. | He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. |
יוֹד֣וּ לַיהוָ֣ה חַסְדּ֑וֹ וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו לִבְנֵ֥י אָדָֽם׃ | Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! | Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, |
כִּי־ הִ֭שְׂבִּיעַ נֶ֣פֶשׁ שֹׁקֵקָ֑ה וְנֶ֥פֶשׁ רְ֝עֵבָה מִלֵּא־ טֽוֹב׃ | For he satisfies the longing soul, and the hungry soul he fills with good things. | for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. |
יֹ֭שְׁבֵי חֹ֣שֶׁךְ וְצַלְמָ֑וֶת אֲסִירֵ֖י עֳנִ֣י וּבַרְזֶֽל׃ | Some sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, prisoners in affliction and in irons, | Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains, |
כִּֽי־ הִמְר֥וּ אִמְרֵי־ אֵ֑ל וַעֲצַ֖ת עֶלְי֣וֹן נָאָֽצוּ׃ | for they had rebelled against the words of God, and spurned the counsel of the Most High. | because they rebelled against God’s commands and despised the plans of the Most High. |
וַיַּכְנַ֣ע בֶּעָמָ֣ל לִבָּ֑ם כָּ֝שְׁל֗וּ וְאֵ֣ין עֹזֵֽר׃ | So he bowed their hearts down with hard labor; they fell down, with none to help. | So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. |
וַיִּזְעֲק֣וּ אֶל־ יְ֭הוָה בַּצַּ֣ר לָהֶ֑ם מִ֝מְּצֻֽקוֹתֵיהֶ֗ם יוֹשִׁיעֵֽם׃ | Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. | Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. |
יֽ֭וֹצִיאֵם מֵחֹ֣שֶׁךְ וְצַלְמָ֑וֶת וּמוֹסְר֖וֹתֵיהֶ֣ם יְנַתֵּֽק׃ | He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. | He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains. |

יַעֲל֣וּ שָׁ֭מַיִם יֵרְד֣וּ תְהוֹמ֑וֹת נַ֝פְשָׁ֗ם בְּרָעָ֥ה תִתְמוֹגָֽג׃ | They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; | They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. |
יָח֣וֹגּוּ וְ֭יָנוּעוּ כַּשִּׁכּ֑וֹר וְכָל־ חָ֝כְמָתָ֗ם תִּתְבַּלָּֽע׃ | they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits’ end. | They reeled and staggered like drunkards; they were at their wits’ end. |
